I've been doing way too much exercise, far too much for this aging 29 year old body to take, and I tweaked my back pretty bad. I'm going to a chiropractor today, and later getting a massage, so I'm going to be in and out.

Squats status:

[ ] Done

[ ] Not Done

[X] Oh shit what was that

I got through my warm-up of air squats okay, then I tried a light load (still doing the warm-up, just putting a small load on), and suddenly the entire left side of my body -- back, glutes, hamstrings -- began spasming at once.

Then I could hardly walk for the rest of the day (yesterday).

I guess I should say that anyone who's exercising for the first time in a long time should definitely build in recovery days into the schedule and observe them even more rigorously than training days, and also, stretch/mobilize every day. Even 29 year old bodies like mine need some tune up work.

Meanwhile, at Red State, Joe Cunningham argues that the media is hypocritical for going crazy over Steve Bannon's old, dropped domestic battery charges.

Let me ask you guys this: Have you ever heard of campaign staffers being vetted this way? The candidate himself, sure. But his staffers?

How many political hands working today could survive a full media vetting without DUI's, substance abuse, assault allegations, infidelities, etc. coming to light? How many media people could stand up to the vetting?

I ask because I just don't remember anyone going after someone's political aides before. I know the right is trying to get some scrutiny on Huma Abedin, and the media is not very interested.

39 After a few years of running now I can second the advice. Even after you become experienced, you need to be constantly aware of over use and err on the side of caution.

Rest days are when your muscles heal and build up stronger. What you are doing when you exercise is literally breaking down the muscles to allow them to rebuild. The healing process is the most important part.

Note this is separate from trying to increase your cardio to help lose weight. They are two different things.

I finished a strong 7 mile tempo run last night, extremely successful. I even included 10 brutal hill repeats. In the middle of the night I woke up with a calf cramp that will now sideline me for a few days due to lingering pain. But that is better than pushing and ending up in physical therapy.

Not trying to bust your chops.

If you can find a friend/workout partner who can watch your form (which varies based off of low bar vs high bar squatting) and have him watch your chest, knees, hips and head while you squat, it'd be a good thing.

Keep up the good work in getting time under the bar.

Connective tissue doesn't grow or repair very quickly compared to muscle. Be mindful of its limitations. Be sure to eat and supplement with lots of building blocks for connective tissue.

You may have to experiment. I was consuming buttloads of glucosamine and chondroitin for a while and didn't notice any subjective improvement in things like time to heal on ligament pulls. Bone based soups and stews seemed to work better.

As someone who has been through a myriad of those where the only relief was laying on the floor for a couple of days just make sure you stay positive...not much more depressing than a bad back especially at your age.

Couple of areas that you may want to look into stretching/rolling a lot more once you're back up and functioning.

1. Using a hard foam roller on your hips and your IT bands.

2. Try and criss cross legs stacking your knees on top of each other and slowly try to sit your ass back on the ground only go as far as when the stretch begins. reverse top leg and repeat.

3. Stretch your lats. Upper body stiffness was a culprit too...

Since I started focusing on that I have seen my spasm issues go away.

Oh, I hope I'm around the campfire when you decide to tell that one.

I'm not being snarky about this, a good masseuse requires a relationship as much as a good barber does. (I got a bad haircut yesterday).

I used to have a budget for frequent massage. I patronized a shop run by a Russian woman and I politely accepted whoever she gave me and it's a very hit and miss proposition. Eventually I got to be a good enough customer that I could insist on getting only her.

And we're still taking straight massage here. It's a gift as much as it is training. You either have the understanding in your finger tips or you don't.

Anyway, the thing that happened with my Russian was that the accident at the end of one massage became routine because she was ok with it and it was indeed a nice ending, but only after a really good actual massage.

This is cracking me up... I've been hyper aware of these places for about a year and a half, since I saw in one of the local micronews sites, the local cops had busted up a place near my office. I did some sluething, and now I realize, these damn places are on practically every corner. There are at least half a dozen within a mile of my house. It's unbleivable.

For shits and giggles I went on backpage.com which I guess a more perverted version of craigslist, tailored to this sort of thing, and could not believe how many of these places are around.

Since then, there have been another 4 or 5 busts in my town and neighboring towns. All chinese women from Flushing NY between the ages of 45 - 55.

Also worth noting the advertising images on that backpage site, are not women in the 45 - 55 year range.

Certain neck arteries are vulnerable to the movements done during certain "adjustments". There's apparently a school of chiro thought which strives to minimize rapid high-energy adjustments in favor of slower, less risky movements.

Downside for the patient of the slower method: more office visits.

If you aren't using a foam roller before and after you lift, you should start to.

125 Ace, one thing to keep in mind when doing weight bearing exercises that put stress on the joints (squats, deadlift, bench press): You are risking injury if the muscle tissue is not fully rested/recovered. If not, the weight is being more supported by your skeletal frame than the exhausted muscle tissue, which is murder on the joints. I have a permanent shoulder injury for this reason; I over trained on incline press (despite my SICK GAINZ in my upper chest). A few months ago, I jumped back into deadlifting too fast and too heavy, and I almost herniated a disc. My workout partner actually suffered that injury a month later for the same reason. After I worked back up to that same weight, I lifted it fine. The key was that adequate conditioning and recovery. At your ripe age of 29 (+10), you need a week to recovery between squat sets. I'm 39, and that's the recovery time that prevents injury for me.

[ ] Always done to some extent for "conservative" candidates.

[ ] Done with a neutron scanning microscope for any staffer who leave the Dims and do any tell all books, make negative statements, etc. See Dick Morris for an example. BTW, I am not defending Morris, I think he is scum.

[ ] If the "conservative" candidate starts winning or even scaring the Liberal candidate, then they go for the neutron scanning microscope review process.

I haven't been to a chiro in a long time, and I don't buy into the crazy business about how all other disease conditions in the body are all induced by "subluxations" and whatnot. Chiro practices are rife with cargo-cult thinking.

But, at one point, I really did jack up my neck badly, and nothing orthodox was helping, and I went to a chiro recommended by a friend. The guy took an actual X-ray, showed it to me, and said, without a bunch of hokey pseudoscientific woo, "This right here is slipped out of line and here's how we'll help it get back."

Which he did. I was all right with that. Was happy to no longer be in pain. Haven't required such services since.

173 'Ettes, I have a cleaning question for you, since this is an open thread.

Just yesterday I bought a tote bag that looks like it's made out of crocheted straw, but it's actually paper, according to the tag.

So naturally today, my first day of using it, my lipstick cover comes off and there is now lipstick on the inside of my beige paper tote.

Any ideas how to get it off? Since it's paper, I don't know if it will fall apart if I try to use anything that I would normally use, like Dawn.

It was only $15 on sale, but I like it and I would still like to get more than a couple hours worth of use out of it

If I have a really bad migraine and presuming I can see well enough to get myself there and presuming I am not vomiting up my toenails, getting my neck adjusted stops the headache. Now that I am retired from computer programming, I don't get as many migraines because that is heck on your neck, shoulders, back, heck, your whole body.

So, since, I am allergic to most pain meds and any migraine meds that work, I will gladly go to my chiropractor.

It depends, some kinds of paper are actually very strong, while some kinds instantly revert to their constituent parts when wet. I would carefully blot one tiny part of the area with a paper towel moistened with a weak bleach/water solution and see how that part reacts. Given that it was $15 and the fact that good strong paper that can take a beating is often $5-15 for a 22" x 30" sheet, I suspect that paper is not strong paper.

Strangely enough, the chiropractor for whom my sister works is a woman. A dirty massage parlor opened up next door to her office. They had to move the chiropractic practice because the gals would sit smoking cigarettes on the curb in front of the business and holler at anyone walking by about massages. Various guys came into the chiropractic office wanting to know what they charged for "special services". It was a mess. The cops would raid it, but, they couldn't shut it down because the gals were independent contractors and the owner had explicitly told them not to do those kinds of massages.

After a couple weeks, I was just standing in the kitchen working at the counter and the muscles between my shoulder blades knotted up. I went straight to the ground and just laid there moaning for a while.

If you're not, Ace, I would highly recommend looking at exercise recovery supplements. I tried one called Legion Recharge several days later and the knots that were still in my back just disappeared in a couple hours. I use it regularly and my muscles get tired and a little sore, but the heavy lactic acid soreness is almost entirely absent now.

254 You wouldn't believe the lengths they went to in order to cover up their real vocation. It was a very nice office replete with top equipment and constant PR. They wanted to sponsor a local little league team- ha!

But that was only becaus their clientele was paying top dollar for their, ahem, "services".

We would talk to friends locally and they would proudly tell us how their husband was going to the new massage place and his back felt much better. My wife and I would just look at each other like oh boy.

256 Thanks for all the suggestions for cleaning my bag. I tried "Zout" (similar to Shout, I guess - who names these things?) and it worked a little. I tried rubbing alcohol - nothing. I have a Spray and Wash stick, a Tide pen, Hydrogen peroxide, and Dawn yet to try.

But fixer upper mentioned an art gum eraser, and although I don't have one of those, that made me think of Mr. Clean magic eraser. So I tried that. It's working a little bit, but the crocheted stuff is kind of shredding the eraser. So I will keep trying.

It seems to be holding up pretty well. I paid $15 for it but it was originally $30, so it's probably at least okay quality. I call it a tote but it's really more of a lightweight handbag. You wouldn't know it was paper unless you read the tag.

Again, thanks for the suggestions!

Here's something that did work. Stretch pre-workout under a hot shower. (MAKE SURE OF SECURE FOOTING.) Then steadily drop the shower temp to warm, then lukewarm, then cold. Stay with the cold long enough to get your body core back down to a normal level before starting to exercise. Otherwise you'll overheat early on.

I haven't done this in a while, goddamn Commiefornia drought restrictions and all, because two showers for one gym session is ridonkulous. But my exercise injury rate fell to zero.

You heard correctly.

Also, they print the "from the glass-lined tanks of Old Latrobe"* thing on the bottles as a "tribute" to its origins, but that's just shabby marketing.

*there are 33 words in the original. There was also a winning pony who wore #33. Also prohibition was repealed in '33. There are more than 33 theories about what the number 33 meant on the Rolling Rock bottle but they don't matter anymore because Rolling Rock is DEAD DEAD DEAD and those fucking Bud-Belgians are just fucking with us.

322 Ohio raised the alcohol per volume Hooray, just bought some local made beer with 8.9% so it's like drinking 2 beers at once.
==========================
Yep lotta good beer now.

Couple years back I started brewing my own.

I have couple cases bottled drinking now that are basically mead. Seriously, Thor himself would pass out after 4. I only drink one.

To get that much alcohol in a beer you have to cheat a bit. In addition to a big grain bill (term of art) I added - honey, maple syrup, Belgian candy surgar. Pitched two different kinds of yeast, because when the alcohol content gets over 9% or so, it kills your typical beer yeasts and you don't get as much alcohol yield. There are other yeasts that can survive in higher alcohol solutions. Wine yeasts obviously, but also strains intended for high specific gravity brews.

Odd thing is that it doesn't seem like it has a lot of alcohol when you taste it because of the way I handled the "mash".

The first inkling you have that you are toasted is you notice your face is numb. Then you get up to pee and fall down.

Technically I think it would be classified as barely wine bc it about 14%.

Actual mead I think is like 20% but I haven't tried to make any for reals.

No you have it all wrong. Moby Dick, written by Gregory Peck, starred Ishmael, played by Ben Kingsley, not really an Arab Arab, but close enough.
Queequeg is actually Dwayne Johnson, with temp tattoos.
And he's close enough, for Lions Gate. The animated Moby Dick is better, from Pixar, it has spunky girls as the whaling crew.

-------------

I didn't see that (too busy working on my purse, I guess) but if whoever asked that is still around, here's what I do.

Wash and dry the basil, then throw it all in a blender or food processor with some olive oil, and whirl away. You want to make sure there's enough olive oil to make a sort of paste, but it should be mostly basil.

Then either freeze it in ice cube trays, or you can freeze it flat in a ziplock bag and just break off what you need.

I do this at the end of the season and throw it in when I make spaghetti sauce or tomato soup, and it tastes just like summer.

348 It could be any number of things, lack of core strength, improper exercise technique, not allowing enough rest to recover, etc. Your core is the most important thing to train and strengthen to prevent back ailments. It can also be a combination of the increase in exercise and something as simple as sleeping or sitting. Consult a trainer in your area with a good rep. Not all trainers are equal. Or you can write to me and we can discuss what your doing, how you are doing it and what your goals are. I'm nearly twice your age and I run circles around most of the kids at gym.

Squat three times a week, finish with 3 sets of five.

Can't do that with the deadlift though...

Taco, I deadlift or do squats once a week. I do between 6 and 8 sets, with 5 to 10 reps each. But sometimes I max out with 1 or 2 reps early in the workout (never max late in the workout, it risks injury). I usually go pretty heavy.

If you ever want to chat about back injuries or anything like that I'd be happy to talk to you because your blog is awesome. It's a daily bookmark. I've been reading Instapundit since it launched and littlegreenfootballs before Charles lost his mind (he even banned me personally). Similarly I've read most or all of what you've put out since probably 10 years ago. I don't heap admiration your way to be a fanboy, just in hope you'll actually holler at me if you want a second opinion or to ask questions. I really did just drink a few beers and I'm feeling good vibes.

I used my spam folder email address above. I don't use my real email much on the internet lest it end up in a spam list. If you email me using rromano.register@gmail.com I WILL see it before I delete it, it may just take a few days for me to get back to you. But please feel free, in fact feel obligated, to ask me about anything.

Oh, and I just started building my own squat rack. So that's cool of me too, right? And I read Rippetoe's Starting Strength.

To any commenters above being snarky about chiropractic: don't hate, just research spinal biomechanics and reflex control of the spine and then tell me chiropractic is bullsh*t. Go ahead...I'll wait.
