The only thing that changed was Trump's tone on the matter.

This reversal thing is a load of bullshit as if Trump did a 180 and is now an open borders amnesty guy.

Posted by: donna at August 26, 2016 01:15 PM (O2RFr)

30 I don't see what the big deal about Trump's apparent new position in relation to his old one. The two stances don't appear to be mutually exclusive. It sounds like now he's saying that there are things he can do immediately, without help from congress, because laws currently exist. Enforcing the existing law is good. His previous remarks seemed to be about something that's categorically different, changes in the law that he'd push for. So he could be saying he's going to strictly enforce the law and take certain actions that he's capable of right now, and also push for fixes to the current system.

That is assuming that Trump's thoughts are that coherent, which I'm sure many would argue they aren't.

Well, if you'd really like to be depressed, you can think like I do, and realize that, if Teh Donald wins the presidency, Scankles will most likely not be prosecuted in any way.

Because I can see the so-called "wise men" of the GOPe soberly advising Trump that a prosecution of a former SoS would be unprecedented, bad optics, would needlessly fuel a partisan witch hunt and would, in the end, hopelessly splinter a party which needs unity to (wink, wink) move Trump's agenda forward.

And Trump, who seems to be like Nicholas II in that he responds to whomever speaks to him last, will agree that the good of the country has to come before a political prosecution.

And the cankled, spackle-haunched, feculent, urine-stanked treasonous bitch will waddle off back to Chappaqua to spend the rest of her days in a drunken Sapphic idyll.

I'm glad Trump is getting good advice from true conservatives who understand that the only proper conservative response to illegal immigration and terror threats are elaborate expensive electronic systems and a huge bureaucracy to implement and manage them. 79 What reversal?

His tone is friendlier and somewhat sympathetic but the content hasn't changed. Still no amnesty, still everyone has to leave and maybe come back legally, and the rapists, murderers and drug dealers are going to be the first to go.

He never did say he was going to send SWAT teams into 11 million people's bedroom and drag them away at gunpoint, you know like Clinton did to Elian Gonzales.

Trump continues to say no amnesty and no legalization. So the press will say Trump reversed twice even tho he didn't change anything at all.

Supporters don't need a 50 point plan for people to pick holes through, unlike George Will and Judith Miller who should FO and go pick their own holes.

83 Man, if Mitt says something stupid she may be 3 for 3 this week.

The big thing, supposedly is that not all the illegals will be rounded up and deported. Except... No one's ever actually, seriously called for that, have they? I mean, sure, many of us (raises hand, weakly) maybe kinda want it, but come on. Slow the flow in, eject as many of the worst as you can (killers and ID thieves especially), make it tougher for illegals to get jobs (i.e. stay, and there will be fewer illegals here.

This is not rocket surgery. Sure, after the number is reduced, we can are over how many is enough and what to do about the remainder but that's later.

98 Trump originally said he would deport all illegals and give certain ones an expedited process back into the U.S.

That's since been changed to letting some remain on a case by case basis, but cannot be citizens, if they want citizenship they have to leave and come back the right way.

All his other policies remain the same. Does this really constitute a 180 degree turn? Moreover is this really the same as the GOP-E policy of bullshit of amnesty?

Instead of emoting and waving your shriveled up dicks around saying I told you so's, explain to me how this softening constitutes a complete reversal/180 degree turn.

No, it won't happen, but it really doesn't need to.

If you just aggressively enforced existing laws (including aggressively tracking down visa overstayers) you'd solve 70% of the problem. Bust up the 'sanctuary' racket and that deals with another 15%.

Then you have to reform H-1b and other visa programs, and you have to put some mechanisms in place to ensure that future administrations MUST properly enforce the law.

86 Trump needs to keep his advisors in their silos and decide who he's going to listen to on what issue.

Trump did exactly the right thing at the right time...

He needed to allow the people who didn't want the hard line on immigration the possibility that he had modified his position. Now, they have the ability to believe Trump will allow the "good" illegals to stay and the "bad" illegals to go.

Also, he has blunted an area that the press could bash him, by giving surrogates the ability to argue both sides.

Fuck the actual position. This is how you win elections.

115 I'll say this, I honestly don't know what the reversal and to me it's just sort of this thing the MSM has all sort of agreed on that they would push. Like he made some big speech taking back that he was going to be tough on illegal immigration.

Isn't it funny that the same people that tried to paint this position as fascism are now attacking him for a "reversal" that really isn't even there?

117 What's changed in Trump's position?

Sending out the Trump Gestapo to kick in doors at 2 am to enforce the mass deportation of millions was never going to happen. Among other issues, we're going to see a lot of judges refuse to enforce the law on what should be routine deportation matters.

What will work is to go after employers, end benefits, end sanctuary cities and reverse Obama's executive orders. A President Trump can do a lot here without Congress as it would mostly just require enforcing existing law.

There's been a purposeful attempt to make Trump look like a flip-flopper, and to promote the lie that he's now taking Jeb's position -- Jeb himself is pushing it.

145 Admittedly, deportation is a massive issue, especially when you would be deporting the custodial parents of American citizens born here.

We need a few things to make the illegal alien problem go completely away.

1. Stop ignoring the employment of illegal aliens by anyone. Make the documentation for getting employed more than producing a Social Security card to be copied and attached to an I9 form. Make employing illegal aliens BOTH costly and punitive.
2. Shut down services to illegals--completely full stop. No free anything. I know that is harsh and bitter and all kinds of ugly, but, it's got to be done. It's one of the major carrots luring illegals.
3. Strict border control, through a wall/trenches/land mines or whatever. Letting the cartels and others build tunnels is completely unacceptable. We have the technology to know what the subsurface strata should look like along the border and when it changes, we go fix that with extreme prejudice.

He's not a politician so he doesn't know how to smoothly transition or tweak policy positions, especially since he's off the cuff and speaks brashly. It was the same with the refugees, he originally said it was a humane thing to do but quickly changed his tune. Is he just full of shit, or is he just trying to grapple with a coherent platform that will please his base and help him win? We won't know until we elect him.

People point at this as proof that he'll govern like Obama. But the reality is, he is the only one saying he will enforce our immigration laws and build the wall. Hillary is saying none of that.

So while we have NO chance that Hillary will secure our borders, at least with Trump there is a small chance he will enact his policies, even as he's been groping in the dark trying to put it all together. Isn't that alone worth the vote?

Would you seriously trust Cruz to secure the border? Or Bush, or Rubio, or anyone else? With alternatives like that, it's telling that despite Trump walkbacks he still remains the most credible on immigration.

So instead of shooting our dicks off and thinking we can survive 4 years of Hillary with a GOP congress to keep her in check (LOL) how about giving the carnival barker a chance to prove he's not full of shit after all.

169 There's at least two sides to the "crack down on employers" part of this. Side A is yeah, lots of employers exploit illegals. I'm sure OSHA could have a field day at those, because any place sketchy enough to pay cheap wages in cash, etc. is prooobably not the safest place. So sure, crack down on them.

Side B is all the identity theft that makes it hard for employers (assuming they care, to be fair) to know for sure and police it themselves. So that part-- crack down on the offenders, make E-verify work... It's tougher.

And then there's the visas and some other things I'm blanking on. Like the Chamber of Commerce and all those lobbying groups. Those make it harder to reform the system.

It is an UNDISCIPLINED campaign, but had Trump tried to run a DISCIPLINED campaign he likely wouldn't have attracted much interest in the first place.

This is the point at which Trump needs some discipline.

The Khizr Khan thing is exactly the kind of thing he shouldn't do - there is a very small number of INDIVIDUALS he should ever disparage by name, Obama, Hillary, various Cabinet officials and Hillary minions, and billionaire Dem backers.

Don't punch down unless the target's clearly unsympathetic.

Posted by: JEM at August 26, 2016 01:43 PM (o+SC1)

171 The "deportation force" is ICE, BP, DHS, the DOJ and judicial elements that are involved. They've existed forever. It's a routine part of their mission and capabilities and authorities. Forever.

Enforcing current law - which now, for the first time in history, would include federal administrative or congressional budgetary moves to eliminate lawlessness at the state/municipal level ("sanctuaries") - at the level it was enforced up until the late 80s would result in a dramatically improved situation.

Securing the border - easy, not expensive, not difficult - along with what historically was routine enforcement of the laws would of course dramatically improve not just illegal migration but smuggling and security as well.

None of this is arguable, or complicated, but that it is beyond the understanding of so many (including large swathes of the Horde) is yet another good index of how bleak our situation is.

198 145 Admittedly, deportation is a massive issue, especially when you would be deporting the custodial parents of American citizens born here.

Sorry, but if we're going to go on the assumption that the Federal government has certain responsibilities, and one of those is to determine who is in the country legally with the right to work and who is not, then the 'whether or not we can get jobs' part is clearly a Federal responsibility.

E-verify may or may not work better than the no-fly list (the concept of the immutable permanent 'social security number' is clearly obsolete and needs to be rethought) but the role it serves IS a core Federal responsibility.

215 Joe, not going to give you a homework assignment, that's annoying when people do it here, but sorry, I can't see the germ of any "reversal" possible from what you refer to in an earlier campaign speech.

"Deportation Force" would be merely bad communication, or an immaterial misunderstanding that is cleared up in the first 5 minutes of the first briefing ("Mr President, you already have a deportation force, it's been around since before you were born, it's just not being used to enforce the law").

11 million is a laughable under-estimate of the scope of the problem, but again, where's the "reversal"?

York the other day wrote that the original positions were unclear, and that now they're ..... um, unclear. OK. As much as I'd prefer the sort of detailed concrete plan I could put together in 10 minutes, one rarely sees that in policy debates at this stage.

It's the instant, unquestioning, universal, fairly breathless lunge into discussing something that probably doesn't exist ("reversal") that I find amazing.

Though why, in a country that could elect Obama twice, not to mention all the other self-imposed damage and degradation that proceeds apace, I would be surprised, is not clear.

If we are going to confiscate a guy's car for hiring a hooker for a bj, we can take businesses for hiring illegals.

That's fair, and I have no actual experience with it, so I'll cede the point. If we're gonna have E-Verify or a similar system, it needs to be better. If it's not worth having, let's get rid of it. I actually want to see a debate on this. This is the wonkery that just gets lost in the shouting.

Anyway, to review- some employers take advantage of cheap illegal labor and should be punished along with the illegals.

Other employers are being lied to and taken advantage of by identity thieves and those thieves need to be punished severely. It'd be nice if employers had a way to screen or help enforce that, and I really want to see that conversation.

The problem is that the federal government, whether it be Democrats or Republicans, see the solutions to problems created by the federal government as more federal government.

In this case, the federal government caused this problem by not doing their job. Really, the primary job that they were created for - to secure our border. Now that they weren't able to do their number one job, they want more power over our lives. That's what Republicans think is a good idea. It's mind boggling.

It's not like immigration law and procedures are quantum physics, but so many people refuse to educate themselves about them, even as they pretend to hold strong positions about related policies.

T-Rump has repeatedly (including this week, during his non-reversal reversal comments) made enforcing the current law one of his points.

If current law were enforced to any reasonable degree (pick 1980 as your "restore point"), the mass illegal migration situation would change dramatically, very dramatically. Even before the border were secured.

Enforcing the actual laws we have (not just immigration law, but employment law) will cause many to self-deport. Why create a 'deportation force' if you don't need to? That was about the only change I heard. No need for that if we use the police and law enforcement we already have to round up these criminal types and deport. Build a wall to keep more from coming in. Enforce law. Many will leave on their own. Deal with those left in a humane fashion and they can apply for re-entry like everyone else.

When did Trump ever say he wouldn't deport humanely??????

His affinity with Beck and coziness with the Mormons with their infamous support for lax immigration and amnesty shot his credibility to hell.

There's a reason why Sessions went all in with Trump instead of Cruz.

of a free and prosperous US?

Posted by: weft cut-loop at August 26, 2016 02:03 PM (V3IFq)

I can't answer such a broad question like that. It all depends.
On one extreme, if there is so much illegal immigration that the meaning of citizenship itself is meaningless, then yes that is bad.
But on the other extreme, if there is so little illegal immigration because of either (a) no desirability to come here because it's a shithole, or (b) draconian efforts to keep them out that end up infringing on the rights of citizens, then that's also bad in a different way.
Ultimately I am pragmatic about the issue. Breaking the law is bad, yes. Creating a police state to enforce the law is also bad. Note that I'm NOT SAYING that we have a police state, or that Trump wants to create a police state. I simply view illegal immigration in a broader context.

I don't "spin" for anybody, I don't care about any candidate, I only care about results, policies, what's right and wrong.

Anyone who thinks deporting 11 million (or causing them to depart, partly through deportations of others) is not feasible, is an idiot, or completely ignorant about the topic.

A "deportation force" comment would be a typically lame Trump way of referring to something that already exists, has existed for decades, and needs nothing other than leadership to do its job. "Backing away" from such a concept would also be a way of simply not repeating an ill-considered formulation of a concept that is moot - the "force" already exists and doesn't need to be created.

I ask over and over for any substantiation that there's been a "reversal" or even significant change in Trump's illegal migration positions and nothing is produced.

The blog, and many of the veteran redoubtable commenters, regurgitate a typical MSM-generated non-troversy, and that's supposed to be the basis for discussion. Yet some wonder how Obama is president, and Clinton can even be a candidate.

Right now, it's ILLEGAL for an employer to ask to see a Social Security card.

Rightly seen, this is a kind of invasion and should be treated as such. Doing so is part of the solution.

Mexico enables Illegal Immigration as part of its solution to its own domestic problems. Which is why a lot of Illegals are not Mexico's finest.

Zero illegal immigration is not achievable. 80/20 rule at work.

A level of illegal immigration that does not adversely affect the quality of life of the legal residents - in crime, tax rates, employment - is IMO the goal.

And I'm sure Trump recognizes that his job is not to eliminate illegal immigration, but just to get it down to a level where it's no longer a visible political issue.

The battle, though, is not just border enforcement, and not just employers, but the visa overstays and kicking the teeth out of local government entities like the SF Board of Supervisors.

349 Right now, it's ILLEGAL for an employer to ask to see a Social Security card.

Think of all the current regulation and disclosure employers have to
do, but checking if the person they are hiring is illegal is well,
illegal.

That one small change would probably take care of half the problem.

Posted by: Maritime at August 26, 2016 02:13 PM (U2pFT)

Unless it is some weird state law where you live, this is not illegal at all. I had to provide both a birth certificate and a SS card as proof of legal status when I got my job a decade ago and my children had to do the same within the last year when they were hired.

This is from a law firm specializing in these types of immigration issue. Right now we have an I9 form for eligibility requirements:

"The I-9 does not require a social security number (indeed, requiring a potential employee to produce a social security card for I-9 purposes is a substantive violation and could result in significant fines). By contrast, E-Verify requires a social security number."

While GS did donate to Cruz's campaign, they were no where near his main source of support. Heidi's job does not matter no matter how much you want to believe Cruz is a globalist (whatever the hell that is supposed to mean).

Cruz did support TPA and he caught hell for it (including several phone calls from me). I understand why he did as I am a firm supporter of free trade myself. TPA was not problematic in theory. The problem is that this President and this Congress could not be trusted not to screw us using the fast track process to pass things that had nothing to do with free trade. Cruz backed off of TPA and never supported TPP so you can stop repeating that lie.

449 "Trump is currently tied or ahead in Florida and tied in Ohio."

He now has a slight lead in the LA Times poll, the one that keeps polling the same people.

The Q poll that now shows Trump down 10% doesn't show their turnout assumptions among Ds, Rs and Is, from what I saw. I assume this is on purpose.

It does show Trump with 15% of the black vote -- Romney got 7%. A recent Florida poll had Trump with 20% of the black vote. I'd expect this relative gain to be part of a lack of enthusiasm for the White Witch which will also result in much lower turnout than what Obama got.

If Trump gets 20% of the black vote, and only 57% show up (which was 2012 white non-college turnout), holding everything else constant, Trump gets 49.0% of the vote to Hillary's 49.2% and has 266 electoral votes to Hillary's 272.

467 Chi, Maet's departure may have been a bit more complicated than you imply.

He banned primary politics from the ONT, pretty clearly only because Trump. Do you think he would have instituted such an odd ban if Trump were in 3rd or 4th place during the primaries? Pure speculation, but if there were an equal level of rancor, except Cruz heading toward the nomination, I doubt we'd have seen any special limitations on the ONT.

Amusingly, in a dark way, in either the last or second to last ONT, he "defended" an ONT (and sometime day-walking) regular who has morphed into a very tedious and uninteresting annoyance by responding to a complain about him with "just skip his comments". This, after welcoming the guy in question back, and even saying he'd gladly trade several commenters for the briefly self-exiled commenter.

Sorry for the complex obscure construction there, but I absolutely avoid inter-commenter drama and vitriol, as I find it boring and pointless. Thus don't want to use names.

482 So here's the survey, and once you've put your stake in the ground there's not much sense in trying to sell others:

A - I support Trump's policies, I expect him to execute on them, and will vote for him on that basis.

B - I will vote for Trump because however untrustworthy or wrongheaded he may be matters less than keeping Hillary out of the White House.

C - I loathe Hillary but I cannot vote for Trump either and will vote for Gary Johnson, write in SMOD, or just stay home, drink Valu-Rite, and play with myself on Election Day and accept whatever happens.

D - I hate Trump more than I dislike/mistrust Hillary and will vote for her to keep Trump's hands off the football.

E - I believe it's time for another Historic First and believe Hillary will be a wonderful President and will vote for her enthusiastically.

F - I've developed a strange new respect for Gary Johnson since he started coming out in favor of carbon taxes and religious-suppression laws that real Libertarians usually oppose.

G - SMOD 2016 and only SMOD 2016.

To me, your argument looks disingenuous. Most here are aware Cruz supported TPA, and obviously that was where the real issue was litigated in the Senate. His later position seemed at the time to be immaterial to fighting the treaty.

I say this, by the way, as a Cruz voter. In my opinion he changed his support of the treaty to a no vote only when he saw the political winds had changed in the primary. And this isn't a sin, IMO; I don't mind politicians trying to better represent their voters.

One could have mentioned that "in an April 21, 2015, op-ed in The Wall Street Journal, Cruz and Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) urged Congress to pass Trade promotion authority (TPA), which they argued would hold the president accountable in future trade agreements, including the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal."

However, at this point, your claim that nothing has changed regarding Trump's stated position on immigration is equally at odds with reality.

You're the guy spinning the plates on the old Ed Sullivan Show. Eventually, the plates fall off the poles.

Jeb Bush was partly right that Trump would soften his hardline position during the general election campaign. I still think Trump intends to build a wall if he's elected, if only as a symbolic sop to his supporters who--get this--actually believedTrump's promisesin the primaries.

What form this punishment will take is anybody's guess but Bernie Sanders' campaign shows that nearly half of the country wants authoritarian socialism. I suspect we'll get it (or at least a form of it) and all that goes with it.

I think Guiliani is an astute observer of the political scene, and he's also an early supporter, close advisor and confidant of Donald Trump. Rudy's 'impressions' carry weight on this issue.

Trump's softened his hardline stance on immigration to gain ground in the general election campaign. It's a common enough tactic. To deny this is what he's doing is ridiculous.
