Dog Trapped Beneath Fallen Walls After Italy Earthquake Rescued, Reunited With Master

Before getting to the uplifting video, do watch this one, which shows before-and-after video of the town of Amatrice. The devastation is obvious.

Here's the dog being rescued.

Not too hard to watch at all. The dog cries in the beginning, but all turns out well.

More: They rescued a 10 year old girl earlier today, who had been trapped under rubble for 17 hours.

On the other hand, the death toll is up to 250.

37 After the 1886 earthquake in Charleston, SC, buildings were required to have earthquake rods through them. The old, rebuilt buildings have them.

Other areas of Italy that have experienced earthquakes have something similar, I believe.

41 There's a lot of emotive hand-wringing about how these medieval Italian villages just aren't safe in earthquakes.

Well, obviously so. But as a denizen of quake country, I note that there is in fact a lot that can be done to seismically retrofit older buildings, in an architecturally dignified manner. Minimally invasive. In many cases you wouldn't even be able to tell that anything had been changed.

And even if there are some structural alterations that are visible to the untrained eye, which impair somewhat the design purity, note that when whole blocks of thousand-year-old buildings collapse into rubble, that too is also not a great thing from the standpoint of preserving classical architectural patrimony.

I'd rather have a building be reduced to 80% pure and remain wholly upright with no loss of life, than have it be "protected" and 100% pure right up until it's 100% destroyed, killing and maiming people in the process.

Heh. Yes, they are. Son's dog was on the screened porch the other day, and he was trying to get her to come in so they could leave. A kitteh was standing next to the door, watching her.

Son kept saying, "It's just a cat! Come on!" He finally had to pick her up and bring her in.

I think the two cats enjoy the fact a larger animal that could kill them both is afraid of them.

I've been saying for a couple years now that these synthetic drugs are behind a bunch of the shootings. Police just aren't prepared to deal with individuals behaving so far out of the realm of normalcy.

The manufacturers of the drugs can't be stopped, no, can't do that. You have to attack the police for reacting to an insane person with a normal fight or flight response. Only going to get worse.

79 >>True cave diving? No fucking way.

It wasn't really a cave but we had a long passageway under a reef where we used to dive in PR. It so shallow you had to crawl with your belly in the sand and your tank would be scraping the bottom of the reef.

It was only about 15 feet long but when the surge was moving you could get tossed around pretty good. Payoff was a "room" in the middle of the reef with a whole that went right to the surface so the surface light could get in and light up the coral. Pretty cool.

97 It wasn't really a cave but we had a long passageway under a reef where we used to dive in PR.

One thing I've always loved about Texas is that you can do pretty much whatever you want so long as you keep your fence mended and stay on your side of it. Dogs mostly only use teeth/jaws as weapon, there is not much scratching instinct. Tend to shake smaller things to death or crush in jaws. Cats are all weapons - teeth, front claws, back claws. Smaller prey they will either sever spinal cord with teeth or bat unconscious with front paws before killing. Equal size is everything goes. Larger size they have an instinct to pull larger animal on top and use rear legs to disembowel (play rough with a cat on it's back and you might see this), plus everything else. Cat vs dog I would only bet on the dog if it has strong prey drive and high pain tolerance, otherwise money is on sneaky cat.

172 Never liked weed. Smelled and tasted bad. Hash and opium were better. Used to be lots of opium around at one time. There was such a thing as opiated hash.
So I've heard anyway.
A novel about my misspent youth lurks inside me.

173 Same with the high folks got at a chile pepper festival in New Mexico from the pain/pleasure of a pepper eating contest. Tears and smiles.

See, that would be all tears for me. The smiles would be on the faces of the other contestants as they realized they beat me handily.

174 You own a business that moves product along at hundreds of feet per second. Fork lifts pull a couple thousand pounds of raw material down from shelves eighteen feet from the ground. Yeah, just the position for someone who likes to get high before coming to work.

I've been there. It's a nightmare. You have to walk around every morning and try to talk to everyone to ascertain who is high, who is hungover, who needs to be sent home.

Your personal liability for not insuring workplace safety is through the roof. I mean the roof of your own home, when you lose it in a wrongful death lawsuit because someone showed up stoned and dropped a pallet on a co-workers head.

175 Maybe Italy can put some of the refugees to work, rescuing and clearing. As long as they dong mind finding unclean dogs and infidels.

176 Could be fun doing a post on "misspent youth", like some of the crazy stuff we did in the past. Statute of limitations - should be okay by now - mostly.

Dog on its back = submission
Cat on its back = thinking of different angle to kill you from

Dog shows you its belly = happy, rub me
Cat shows you its belly = roll the dice, chump

Heh.....

Lemme see - what's the statute of limitations for mugging? For assault and battery? For housebreaking, followed by assault and battery with a dangerous weapon?

Yeah....on advice of counsel, I'm sitting that one out.

What's your secret? *shifty eyes*

Don't smoke for 30 days prior to the test.

I've never had a job with random testing or driving a forklift, and I get the concern there. I did drive an IH 756 and 1066 all...damn...summer...long from age 14-18 on my grandfather's farm. It's my farm now and I still have the 756, (farming isn't my day job - I definitely learned THAT lesson!). If any of you ever need a few hundred acres cultivated, let me know. Just, uh, give me a month's warning or don't complain when a few rows get plowed up.
