Ace of Spades Pet Thread [Mis. Hum.]

chi pet thread.jpg

Happy Saturday 'rons & 'ettes. It is that time again where we talk about all thing pets. No, you can't consider your children, grandchildren and/or nieces and nephews as pets. Although they would be cheaper to raise. Amirite?

Grab a beverage and enjoy!!!

    Meet The Pet Morons

    zzwannabeanglican.jpg

Our first pet is a rascally rabbit. Not only is it a rascally rabbit, it's a politician to boot.

    zzsvitelli.png

So our 2nd entry is from svitelli. Meet Jawa, Penny & Leonard. They are YouTube stars.Svitelli says, " Of course I made a video… (be sure to crank it!)"

    zz spongeworthy.jpg

This is Cheerio. Spongeworthy says the dog is a very nice dog but not very good. That is hard to believe. Looks pretty comfy on that piece of doggeh furniture.

    zz bama bubba.jpg

Bama Bubba is a cat herder. Check out Tigger, Birdman, Purrcious & Scooterbug. Per Bubba, their mother was a feral cat rescued by Bubba. She was also preggers and had a litter of kittehs. Bubba kept 4. Sweet story.

    zzourcountryis screwed.jpg

Lurker, ourcountryisscrewed, submitted this photo of Lucy (Lucifer) the Cat and Fenway. This looks like a daily event.

    zzcowboyneal.jpg

Last but least is the submission from cowboyneal. Duke was a Black Lab who has passed on. cowboyneal told us that he makes hats with photos of your pets. If you are interested his email is blackLabsmatterstore at the gee male thingy.

Well that wraps up this week's Pet Thread. It's been difficult to gauge the degree of interest as the summer rolls along. Since the visits were down last week this week's photos have been scaled back a bit.

We are still accepting tips, news stories and pet photos at where? petmorons at gee mail dot com of course. Thank you for stopping bye.

Our bunny got along great with our dogs. Ok, the chihuahuas were kind of scared of her, but she and our blue heeler got along great. The rabbit would pester the dog to play chase and get her face licked.

There are other issues with having bunnies, but our dogs were not a problem.

21 We had a rabbit when I was a kid. Jumped in the pool and drowned so we got another. That one was smart enough to find it's way out after a swim.

We also had a German Shepherd who would chase it around until the rabbit would kick him in the face. That pissed the dog off but he couldn't do anything about it because he was a good dog so he mostly just left it alone.

22 My dog Smokey chased a bunny into the bushes and managed to scratch the snot out of his right eye. Vet tried antibiotic drops but he got a corneal ulcer and a trip to our great university animal hospital. They debridea the ulcer and put an antibiotic contact on it and put him in the cone of shame for two weeks. Today was the first day since Tuesday that he actually kept his eye opened for a while. He looks miserable and uncomfortable so we're spoonfeeding him ice cream , his favorite thing. He's my baby.

32 It's been difficult to gauge the degree of interest as the summer rolls along. Since the visits were down last week this week's photos have been scaled back a bit.

I don't comment on this thread a lot if there's nothing new to say about my pets.

One of my cats, Reggie, recently stopped using the litterboxes and decided that he preferred the living room carpet for all his bathroom needs. I assumed there was a health problem and took him to the vet. Sure enough, he had a urinary tract infection. The vet prescribed medication which cleared it up, but that didn't explain Number 2. So I bought him a new litterbox and put it in his favorite spot. I'm relieved that he is actually using it.

(I actually prefer Number 2 to Number 1. At least I can see that and clean it up. But if he pees when I'm not around, and it soaks into the carpet and dries up, all I'm left with is the smell. And I don't know where to spray the odor-neutralizing spray that I have.)

Well, this is sorta pet related:

There's a "zoo" in Beijing, China at which visitors can drive around in their cars amongst the wild animals.

Well, a couple were arguing. So the wife, get this, gets out of the car...to, what?, to get in her husband's face. The mother-in-law was in the back seat at the time.

    What happened next?

Well, here's the great Tommy Sotomayor to show and explain what happened.

41 Okay, I have a problem with my dog. She is super clingy. She follows me everywhere. I call her My Shadow now. If I'm in the shower, she parks herself outside of it and waits for me to come out. It's sort of sweet but a little annoying. Danes are very needy of companionship so it's a trait inherent in the breed. I'd like her to be more independent. How do I achieve that?

No-we are insane. And can't say no to a sweet furry face that gives us kisses.

And the Lord help me, if we had a bigger place, I would get more. And a chicken. Because much hilarity would ensue with the GSD, who is neurotic, and worries about all the creatures in her care. We would be able to cut cable and never need TV again.

43 We had a cat that refused to use the litter box she shared with our other cat. We had to get her own litter box. Our dogs used to refuse to drink out of the water dish if they saw a cat drinking out if it. They would go over to it, look at me and walk away. Of course their outdoor water dish had birds taking baths in it and they didn't mind a bit.

49 L'elle, that seems to be a trait among the giant breeds-they are extremely human oriented, and don't do well away from their person. Our newfoundland is similar. Have the other dogs/cat seems to help, so he isn't quite so bereft when I go to the bathroom, or take a shower.

I'm not saying go get another dog, but you may consider getting one of those teddy bears that records your voice, and giving it to your baby when you need some along time.

53 My temporary cat has abandoned me.

He ignored me for five years and then in a stroke of Cat ESP he befriended me a month before the housemate got another dog, one which wants to eat this cat a lot.

So now the cat's my friend, licks his stupid fur and leaves it all over all my stuff, demands constant scratches and rubs.

Well, things have settled down. He's figured out how to navigate life outside my room and how to stay out of the way of the cat-eating dog and he's dropped me like a girl who only wanted a date for the prom.

    55 L,Elle-
I have weimaraners and they are known velcro dogs. Our female has to have me in her line of sight all the time. If I go out of the house, she loses her mind, even if she can still see me. I had to go out of town for a week and my husband sent me videos of her lying by the front door, howling and crying. He had to force her to eat, she wouldn't leave the front door. She gets our other Weimer worked up, and they both start howling. We knew it going in, but I never thought it would be this bad.

Posted by: Abby at August 27, 2016 03:27 PM (HBU7W)

56 Cats will lie about their health until they can't stand the misery anymore. Then they show us that something is wrong. It's why vet bills are high. Cats wait until the malady is well along.

I watch my cats very closely for a few minutes every day for little unusual ticks. Petting can also be a physical exam. Pet a sore or hurt spot and they'll let you know.

Separation anxiety can be a toughie to deal with, since dogs live in the moment.

All my labs have exhibited this in varying amounts, so what I did was to leash the dog and fix her in place and disappear for a few moments then come back and praise her. I gradually increased the away (out of sight) time. Took a month or so, but now my current lab is okay with an extended absence.

YMMV,but worth a try. But DO NOT give in to any whining or barking doing this.

Mine is about that bad. I ran outside to clean out my car and deck and left her in the house. I was gone for about 45 mins. When I came back in she was still standing at the door where I left her. I have tried locking her out of my bedroom so she is forced to be alone, but she just parks herself outside the door and whimpers and whines. She is so big that I forget that she is still pretty much a baby. I'm hoping that she will outgrow some of this with time

68 Overly clingy dogs make me want to be a cat person instead of mu hybrid dog/cat/horses(strictly outside) personality. Our GP is fine if we leave. She takes it as her solemn duty to protect the place and especially the horses both big and minis. But we have to drag Ole the pound pup along if we do any family travel. He will jump the fence and go looking for new friends after 1 full day/night alone. The big PITA baby.

Now, a year and a half later, she's fine when we leave the house - she hops right into her bed in the kitchen - but inside the car where she can see us walking away is a different story.

72 Thank you for the pics., horde! Lovely pets.

I once again had my son's two dogs for a week. One morning I got up to let them out, and the Lab who will pick up any item to take outside (in case we play fetch) picked up my cell phone that was on bedside table. I didn't see it happen and it was dark outside. It is staying darker later every morning (like you haven't noticed). I still didn't know he had it until I started hearing odd noises as his teeth and tongue were turning the phone over and over in his mouth. He dropped it on command though and just then I realized what he had. No damage to phone, remarkably.

Once I was sitting on the couch with an empty martini glass at my side. It was empty, but it still had trace amounts of gin and vermouth in it. My cat Reggie got up on the table and started licking the glass. You'd think that the taste of hard liquor would have repelled him, but he licked the hell out of it. It was one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

Do it Colin. Call the owner a racist pig, and your teammates Uncle Toms for not joining you. It'll be awesome.

82 Used to know a fella who had a male beagle that would go out and roger all the female dogs in heat within a few miles of his property. He got so many complaints he installed that electric fence deal and turned it up all the way. He made me piss myself when he told me he watched as his dog hit the electric fence, did a barrel roll, yelped and stood up on the other side of the electric fence, and took off to do his business with the ladies. Now that was one determined horn dog.

Don't think our pit mix would be too cool with a bunny hopping around, even though he's a good boy. He chases birds out of the yard, but absolutely will not fvck with our small parrot if said parrot flies down to the floor. We scoop up the bird quickly and put him back on his cage/perch.

Our parrot is very sweet, mostly, and fearless. Takes no crap, which accounts for the mostly part.

We had a Vizsla (Prinz) that had acute raging separation anxiety. I loved that dog but it took years for him to finally accept that if we left the house we would return. Along the way, he chewed through a wall or two and ate a car dashboard (well to be fair it had very visible teeth marks in the center), but what an intelligent versatile dog.

If I ever got another Vizsla, I'd have a crate custom built out of rebar for xim. I often wondered, after the fact, if we had never crated him in the house even at night he'd have known that he was a continual part of our lives and not worried so much.

We once took a summer vacation and kenneled him. When we came back, the kennel said he had climbed a 6' chain link fence to get out of his run, and it was only because they had a perimeter 8' chain link fence that they found him. They then put him in a run with a chain link roof and often found him at the seam between the roof and wall climbing up the chain link fencing like a monkey trying to get out!

I'd have to agree with irongrampa - patience. As Juno ages, she will most likely get better about it.

I think what helped Tucker the most was installing his doggeh door. He can come and go as he pleases. Of course, if I leave a room he will follow, or if I go outside, he shadows me (even if it's just to take a bag of trash out).

I'm sure I didn't help things by taking him pracially everywhere. Which reminds me - I need to find a good sized basket for the bicycle...

89 I will send in some pics of Scamp, when he was afflicted by the worst skin infection the vet had ever seen.

Senior vet wanted to put him down, didn't think he could be saved.

But the younger lass at the clinic thought she'd seen something in the books about this, and so into the books she dove.

    And found the solution.

Horrid, actually. His right hind quarter looked like hamburger with a leg.

And because he has such a huge lion's mane of Maine Coon type fur, the "cone of shame" would always slip off, and none were large enough of cone, to prevent him twisting around to lick the wound.

So, I cut a thirteen inch diameter cardboard disk from the lid of a pizza box, and made a "starburst" pattern hole in the middle. The "fingers" of the starburst allowed enough flex to get it over his head, and still gripped the neck well enough, so that it never slipped off, till I removed it.

So, the right antibiotic, and salt water bath of the area....twice day.

He wore that disk for seven and half months, till he was healed and growing fur again.

I'm sure that I'm not the only one here who has gone to great lengths for the health and happiness of their pets?

Bet the 'rons & 'ettes around here have some stories to tell.

90 Our two dogs would bark and carry on like crazy whenever we left the house. One day wife left in the car to run an errand while I was doing some things in the back yard. The dogs just started going OFF thinking we both had left. I looked through the glass of the arcadia door and they were barking and howling and snapping at the air and whatnot until I banged on the glass and started yelling at them in my biggest "oh shit" voice. Scared the bejeezuz out of 'em.

92 We have a little kitteh problem on the horizon. We're going to be moving in about a month, and will somehow have to take along the three cats that live under our small rental house next door to where we live now. Long story, but they were my late mother-in-law's, and they still live under her house because one is half wild, and none get along with our dogs. They come over to our front door to get fed and petted.

We're going to be selling both houses, so we have to try to take them to the new one, and maybe finally force them to live with our dogs, who are old now and (a little) calmer than they used to be.

I guess whichever cat fails to get with the new program will just be SOL.

Did that with a bird. It was a Quaker parrot my daughter brought home from school to take care of over Christmas break. The bird got out of her bedroom and broke his wing as my son shut his bedroom door not knowing the bird was there and flying right behind him.

My daughter and I had to make "cones of shame" every night out of x-ray plastic that the vet gave us because there is nothing out there for a teeny-tiny bird's neck. Then we had to wrap the inside with medical tape to keep it from cutting into his skin. We did this for several weeks until his wing mended.

Get the large dog sized carrier-crate, or the largest Hav-a-Hart trap you can find.

Tie the door open, or with the trap, zip-tie it so it can't trigger and snap shut.

Get the cats used to going in there together, to get treats, whichever they go nuts for.

Probably take a week or more, but they'll get quite comfy going in there for the tasty bits.

To trap them with the crate, you'd run a line through an airhole in the back of the crate, out to the grid on the open door. When all three are in there, pull hard on that line, and hold it closed with a LOT of tension on the line, till you can secure the latch on the door.

For the trap, the problem I see, is getting all three into it, without the first tripping the trigger.

Good luck on the project though, and good on ya for trying your best for them!

We acquired our parrot when he flew into our yard half-dead and dying in the summer in Phoenix. My wife slept on the sofa with him nested along her neck on a pillow for the first ten days or so.

We hand-fed him what little he'd eat. Got him to drink a little water once in a while. This went on for months.

$1500 in vet bills and a year of doing nothing but sitting on his perch and staring into space he finally got well enough to fly.

His name is Parker and he runs the show around here now. People with birds will know what I mean.

101 I have cats and a dog, and they are all very loving to me, just in their own little ways.
The big male cat, Dexter (featured months ago), he is not a cuddler, but he does need to be where ever I am. Which ever room of the house I am in, that is where you will find Dexter, either on the floor or on a settee or a shelf. But Dexter does not like to be picked up and put on my lap, and will loudly protest even bite me if try to.
The female cat, Maysie, is very old (1 and she just wants a place to sit in the sun. Maysie will cuddle with me on the sofa when I watch TV.
The dog (basic black dog, about 40 lbs) is very friendly to the cats and will try to sniff them and they will tolerate that up to the point where they don't and will swat the dog on the nose, and that is the end of it.

Daughter had a Greyhound with severe separation anxiety. He would destroy the house if no one was home. Crating him didn't work - he busted through the cage. Son in law built him a "Quiet Room" in the basement, with treats and his favorite toys. The first time they left him in the Quiet Room to go to work, he chewed through the wall and broke out. Drywall everywhere. Then he ate the loveseat.

The Greyhound farm folks worked with him for a while and the conclusion was that he was best suited for the farm.

124 Our big mutt never had separation anxiety because she was picked up on the street by the pound at the age of about 9 months, then rescued by a vet because she's good looking, so she lived at a rescue home for a week.. The vet asked us to take her, and we agreed, but the dog had to go back to the vet to be spayed, then we went out of town so she had to live at the boarding kennel for 10 days.

The dog just loves everyone, and it took her months to learn that WE were her permanent humans and this was her real home. When she got out of the yard she would follow other people home, cuz why not? It was her normal life up until then to live with a succession of kind humans.

128 OK, now funny stuff about my dog: we have a neighbor with a cute little boy dog (no idea what breed - long-haired, black, short legs, maybe 8 lbs). Wife likes to put the dog in a T that reads "lil heartbreaker." Every time Loki and Lil Heartbreaker meet up, LH goes straight for Loki's, uh, johnson and licks it. No idea what this is about, but both dogs seem OK with it, so....

129 Yeah, grammie, Juno destroyed my couch. She kind of ate it like your daughter's greyhound did to the loveseat. She also ate off part of her doggie door to her pen ---- that was bc of teething. She has stopped doing that kind of destructive behavior. She is great with people and other dogs. She is an attention hog. I don't know if this just her or if it's something I'm doing wrong.

132 "I guess whichever cat fails to get with the new program will just be SOL. "

Funny true story, my niece and her new husband bought a house, a foreclosure. They got a good deal on it, but the place had 3 outdoor cats that belonged to the people who lived there before.
They trapped the cats and returned them to the former owners, who now lived several miles away.
Anyway, all 3 cats found their way back to the original house, and now belong to my niece and her husband.
Cats have a sense of place that dogs seem to lack.

Our boy Miles (80 lb. lab-mix) chewed up a couple cushions on part of a sectional when we first brought him home from the shelter. Separation anxiety from when we'd leave the house.

We just flipped the cushions over and GAVE him that part of the sofa.

When he figured out it was his he stopped chewing it up.

137 Hey, SOB Van Owen, that's what I told MisHum too. Our time slot sucks. Plus, it's the weekend and everyone is tuned out or out and about. There isn't an easy fix to that unfortunately. Everyone is kind of stuck on the fixed schedule as it is. We still love doing this. We worry that it's too niche and focus on numbers of comments. I think it is the happiest post at AoS except for when we have commenters lose their pets, but that's okay too.

197 Mis Hum - Thank you for keeping up this thread (along with 'elle, am I right?). It truly is a favorite of mine. Don't judge interest by the number of comments. I read all the content and comments every week. I feel it would be rude of me to mention one pet I thought was cute and not the others, so when I don't have time to write a lot, I tend to write nothing.

198 Ok, how the heck do I get rid of this sock? I tried a sock for the first time yesterday and now can't get my real name back!!!

199 This thread is one of those things in my life that help me wind down from the crap week I have had. My little girl is Bella, she is a papillion and just as sweet as can be. I rescued her from my ex who was gonna take her to the shelter, the dog we last had together was killed when a coyote broke through the screen door and snatched him. He was a bichon, and his name was Charlie. Keep up the good work.

200 "...was killed when a coyote broke through the screen door and snatched him."

    What a nightmare.
Glad I live in the city.
But we even have coyotes here.... come to think of it. I saw a dead one, road kill, on a busy city street once.

201 MisHum and L,Elle - the Pet Thread really is a lot of people's favorite. No doubt it's mine! Thanks for putting it together each week.

202 Locally there is a coyote who has been making the news, an older male, absolutely covered in mange. He has wandered in to some expensive neighborhoods.
All the news outlets are talking about him and some want to capture him so they can treat him medically.
    Are you kidding me?
What he needs is a .22lr in the brain pan, put him out of his misery.

205 Love the pet thread. Don't comment much -- anywhere, anymore -- due to time constraints. But please do know this thread is appreciated. With so much crapola in the news, the pet thread is a welcome respite.

206 Yep. I'm around here all week, but it's the pet thread I really look forward to seeing. Try as I might, I sometimes miss it live and have to come back later in the weekend.

207 I comment some (not so much anymore) in the other threads, but the politics gets tiresome and this thread is a nice respite from all of the vitriol.

208 207 What amazes me is how people launch into the same goofy discussions day in and day out like they expect to solve an issue by arguing it to death.

211 Please do not scale back the Caturday pet thread! Will try to send a pic of Casey (kitteh named for who else, the "Ol' Perfesser") when I can figure out which is his best photo. Like the other morons who have commented in the last few hours, I look forward to the AoSHQ pet thread each week as a blessed relief from TFG . . . . Hillbillary . . . . the unending hot weather . . . . the Phillies' crappy season . . . . and all the other assorted gripes.

At least she doesn't have a T-shirt like the one I saw a woman wearing a few weeks ago: "I got a dog for my husband-- it was a good trade!"

Posted by: Basement Cat at August 27, 2016 07:23 PM (3C9q2)

215 The worst part was that this was a coyote attack in a city, only one city " leisure world" has taken steps to get rid of the coyotes. Because they started attacking old ladies and their dogs in broad daylight, knocking the old lady down and then eating the dog. They hired a company that takes care of that specific problem, and got fought tooth and nail by the animal rights people. I fucking hate California.

Posted by: Tinfoilbaby at August 27, 2016 07:25 PM (6Ll1u)

    216 215

Tell the "animal rights" nuts that coyotes carry rabies as well as having the bad habit of eating dogs, cats, and other pets. From the CDC's website: "Raccoons, skunks, foxes, and coyotes are the terrestrial animals most often infected with rabies in the United States." Seems to me that other animals have a right not to be exposed to the rabies virus.

228 Got a new dog from a shelter 3 months ago. She is very aloof! I have been taking her to the dog park and avoiding the circle, cliques. Wrong move! Cliques are comprised of popular people. My dog does well amongst well adjusted and sociable people and their dogs for a reason Today I joined the circle and had my dog hang out amongst the circle. We had a great day at the park.

229 We took WeaselDog to a dog park after boarding her for a few hours while we were on vacation. It was an absolute riot to see her running around with the other dogs.

232 "It was an absolute riot to see her running around with the other dogs."

    Yeah, it is fun.
It becomes about whose dog is more dog than your dog.
    Which is fun.
My dog runs like the wind. A couple of times I was not sure I would get him back.
Then he finds some disgusting, smelly, dead object to roll around on.
Then we come home and the wife hoses both of us off.

233 What's hilarious is how my little 10 pound dog tries to be the boss of all the other dogs in the pack. She's a nut and you can tell she is having fun.

Posted by: Ben Had at August 27, 2016 08:26 PM (Aamf1)

There is something tragically sad about an empty barn, which is what I have now, but I still miss the horses. What great powerful beasts they are that are so willing to work with and for us. Daughter has the last of our herd on her place now.

We had an assortment, more quarter horses and thoroughbreds than anything else, one really sweet Arabian, one beautiful Appaloosa mare (and Mrs H and I regretted for years that we didn't try to get a foal from her), and one thoroughbred draft cross. We downsized when daughter got her own place and stopped doing shows because of work conflicts.

It was fun while it lasted and I am thankful we had the privilege to have them as part of our lives!

Posted by: Hrothgar at August 27, 2016 09:12 PM (wCEn4)

235 Everyone has a pet or two, dont they? I currently have 2 mules-a beautiful 16 hand roan, grey molly mule named Sage, and her sidekick Tebow. Mules like-need-the company. They are both broke to ride and pack, and whenever I take one of them on a trailride here in New Mexico, I always pony the other one along. I also have an 8 year old beagle bitch, the last of a long line of beagles that I have raised, two litters. I will let you use your own imagination what mom beagle and her 7 puppies would look like on a 58 foot boat, but that is another story. Check out some of the u tube videos of Charlie the beagle and his baby girl friend laurel for some serious feelz goods.

237 We are so excited to make it to the big time! I made that video holding the remote controller in one hand and the GoPro in the other hence the Double Hamfist studio reference at the end. My wife & I have never seen our dog Leonard play with anything so the look he gives when I'm turning Rucky over around 2:16 really tugs at our strings. Check out my other videos especially Chicopee with double D. where my buddy Paul's dogs Diesel and Dakota make shredding the trail look easy!
