9 So, a company that's run by the daughter of Democrat Senator does everything they excoriate businesses for doing (hiking prices, massive salary increase, avoiding taxes as best they can) and we never hear party affiliation? If she even like a conservative post on FB they would have reported that. These people are crazy. Or maybe just allergic to the truth.

12 votermom, when you email the bookstore owner back, I would say something like this:

Thank you for your email. I apologize for misunderstanding our conversation.

I wish you continued success with your store, and should the need arise for further help, I hope you will consider me again. I would be happy to help with (all the things you mentioned).

Sincerely,
votermom

Now, you know and I know that you didn't misunderstand your conversation with him, but if you really do want to work there some day, you'll have to fudge this a little. You want to leave him with the impression that you're a cheerful person who wishes him the best.

You can leave out the part about how the hiring manager can go fly off on her broomstick, for all you care.

45 8 How the hell do you perform a hysterectomy on a transgender man? Or is that really a woman? I'm so confused.
___________________

Start by understanding that there is no such thing as "transgender." There are men pretending to be women, and women pretending to be men. They have themselves surgically altered, and they take hormones, but biologically they're still the gender they were at birth, and always will be -- and every cell in their body knows it, and their internal organs attest to it. That is why "transgender" men can give birth and have hysterectomies: because they're women.

Gender is not a construct. It is a biological and physiological fact.

Transgender is a construct. It is PC nonsense.

79 CBS reports that Hillary will be making a speech today, where she will introduce the latest version of the VRWC .. Alt-Right

No, the alt-right is a real thing. It isn't just a smear, that is what they call themselves. Look up Paul Gottfried and Richard Spencer some time, they are the more-or-less fathers of the movement. It is basically the idea that conservatism should embrace identity politics, but for white people. They have a lot of pseudo-scientific jibber-jabber about how white people are supposedly more "evolved" or some such, but it is all baloney. They also don't like Jews very much.

I don't think the alt-right is very big, and of course Hillary is going to attempt to overstate its influence and thereby trashing everyone on the right as white racists (what else is new), but on the other hand, Steve Bannon himself proudly proclaimed that he made breitbart.com a "platform for the alt-right", so that issue is out there by virtue of his prominence.

I'm closer to the opinion that Assange has something that he thinks is a smoking gun (and by extension we'd see as one, and actually is one), but doesn't realize the extent that the media in this country is going to play defense for Hillary, so it doesn't matter.

87 To repeat what I said on the old thread, this AM the radio news did a story about the epi-pens and put in a note that a generic was just rejected by the FDA, keeping the manufacturer's monopoly. Yet, the outrage of LiVs will be anti-corporate, not anti-government, even though they are hand-in-hand.

And I was reading stories about insulin and the same thing happening just yesterday.

Both of which are relevant to me with one son with food allergies and one with type-1 diabetes.

91 Daily Caller's definition of alt-right in their Opinion pages

What Is The Alt Right?

http://dailycaller.com/2016/08/24/what-is-the-alt-right/

The alt right is an online movement opposed to political correctness, multiculturalism, feminism and mainstream conservatism. It's primarily comprised of young white men. While a large portion of its adherents are white nationalists, not all of the folks tweeting out the hashtag are concerned with enforcing Aryan supremacy. The alt right is an umbrella term which includes multiple ideologies -- everyone from anarcho-capitalists, neo-monarchists, American nationalists, men's rights advocates, "identitarians," and even out-and-out neo-Nazis all claim to be apart of the alt right.

The main activity of the alt right is trolling. The Google definition of trolling is to "make a deliberately offensive or provocative online posting with the aim of upsetting someone or eliciting an angry response from them." The alt right getting a speech from Hillary Clinton is a sign their trolling is working.

Where does the alt right come from? The term comes from "alternative right," which was first formulated near the end of the Bush presidency to describe the anti-Bush Right. Ron Paul fans, paleoconservatives and anyone else who opposed the policies of the Bush administration -- particularly the Iraq war -- could be placed under this umbrella in the beginning. That was how it was described by future Rand Paul adviser Jack Hunter in a 2009 article urging for the movement to take a more libertarian turn.

Instead, it became more white nationalist.

A boycott against Target over its transgender bathroom policy is costing the retailer more than anyone expected.

Shopper traffic is declining for the first time in years, and the company is installing single-occupancy bathrooms in all of its stores to give critics of the policy more privacy. The new bathrooms are costing Target $20 million to install.

The company revealed its traffic declines last week when it reported second-quarter earnings. Target's same-store transactions, which is how traffic is measured, fell 2.2% in the second quarter. Overall, sales fell 7.2% to $16.2 billion, a loss of over $1 billion.

SFGate

Crunch the numbers, and they must have had a 5% drop in online sales to go along with the instore drop. A 7.2% overall drop in sales over a single quarter is gigantic. Which is probably why the story got buried.

Hilarie had met Hailey Rose Bustos on PlentyOfFish. He'd picked her up and they went bowling. Bustos sent the single father a text afterward: She'd had a good time, she wrote to Hilarie, and wanted to meet up the following night at his place.

Bustos, 18, brought three men with her to Hilarie's place, including two career criminals on probation for violent felonies. At least one of the men, police said, had a gun....

111 Apparently, "Alt Right" is a loosely organized group united by a common enemy: globalist corporatism. Just because globalist corporatists cloak themselves in ecological, feminist, lgbt and multicultural propaganda, does not mean critics within the alt-Right are opposing care for the environment or do not support 'gay rights'. Neither do they 'hate' women or people of color.

Alt Right fights against social engineering, ideological indoctrination and censorship and Alt Right does not trust the people and organisations pushing the 'Social Justice' agenda because it's the corrupted agenda of the rich and powerful.

117 In an anti-utopian world in which democracy reigned supreme, it would quickly be revealed the giant crony-capitalist (the more appropriate term would be socialist style corruption) nature of the wind turbine industry. Sure they generate power that is expensive, inefficient and damaging - aesthetically and practically - to the environment and that is how it is sold; it generates clean power and therefore it has to be good - right?

What they don't tell us, and what the truth is about the wind energy industry is that it is creating billionaires from supporters of politicians - mainly Democrats, but Republicans as well.

There exist better, ways to generate wind energy that are being implemented. They aren't being implemented because they would compete with the industry creating the politically sponsored, tax payer funded, creation of ideological driven political benefactors (and tax beneficiaries).

The fact that large-volume energy storage for wind-generated power remains a challenge may also be a factor. Transmission is fine, but storage--and not just for wind, of course--is still an obstacle.

134 Once again.

Hillary did not create the construct of "alt-right". The alt-righters did THEMSELVES. Go to alternativeright.com. Go to takimag.com. These are places where the alt-righters hang out and have their pseudo-intellectual discussions about how white people are more "evolved" and about how "neo-cons" (meaning: Jews) are destroying the planet.

Of COURSE she is going to try to tar everyone on the right with the alt-right brush. That is what she does, and of course she's wrong. That doesn't mean the alt-right doesn't exist or that it ought to be ignored.

And of course she is trying to change the subject away from her corruption. The correct response IMO is not to deny the existence of the alt-right, but instead to respond "hey, a few guys with bizarre ideas about white identity politics don't by any means make up for the brazen corruption and lies and breach of national security put forth by Hillary Clinton".

I think he's missing the point of the show. And yeah, it's a thirty minute sitcom, but still.

It's hard to say what a phenomenon this show was when it was aired...it really did speak to twenty somethings who were going through their own pains, and yeah when you move out on your own and are struggling to find your place in the world and find failure, it does seem the world is against you. Criticizing a show for playing that fact for comedic relief seems to me to be unfair. Would it be better to have a show where everything for the characters is wine and roses, which would instill false expectations for the audience?

I have my own problems with the show, especially in the later seasons, but I never got the sense that Ross was being ridiculed for his intelligence. He was a doofus, and Ross was a doofus so David Schwimmer wouldn't have to act. No ulterior motives.

204 All prescription drugs etc. are marked up by a factor of five over their actual cost. The epi pen is not alone in having an outrageous price. Why? Because insurance companies will only pay 20 cents on the dollar for any drugs or devices they cover - so manufacturers have responded by raising the prices by a factor of five to compensate. If your insurance doesn't cover something - you get stuck paying grossly inflated prices - since unlike insurance companies you don't get to pay 20 cents on the dollar.

Their CEO is not to make any money even though his company created this incredible life saving device. Morning all

I just read the Epipen story, and the cost for the pens makes more sense. Both my daughter and I have to have them, and up until a couple of years ago, it was a hundred bucks for four pens. Now, with insurance, I pay 200 just for hers. At the time, I didn't understand why the cost went up on a drug that's been around for so long, but when you consider the windfall on a drug that's required to be present in all schools around the nation it makes much more sense.

You figure that each school has to be scaled for the number of pens kept on hand. Even with 700,000 freebies, that is not going to cover every school in the US (and international American schools) and for larger student populations, it's probably 1 pen per hundred kids. At a 2000 student school, that's 20 pens, with 19 at a cost of 600 each. Those pens have to be replaced every year. That's $11,400 per year for one school.

I give Manchin's kid credit for thinking up the perfect scam, but I hope she rots in hell for it.

It's also been around for 30 years, because that's how long I have carried one. Mylan has long since recouped their R and D budget, and are making profit on this thing. Up until 3 years ago, the pen was 57 dollars. For a lot of people, that's a lot of money. But 600 is prohibitive. ANd completely unnecessary since the company hasn't incurred additional R and D costs for making the drug-in fact costs for the production have gone way down since it was created.

271 If people are willing to pay 5x more without insurance, then why would
they lower the price if insurance picked up more than 20%?

The only practical alternative to paying the 5x price is to go without the prescription. Since most prescriptions are for fairly serious things that is not much of an alternative. It is not that the average person with a non covered prescription has much choice but to pay the inflated price. I expect insurance companies to start paying 10 cents on the dollar shortly.

That's fair. I'd like to eliminate the arrangement, but so long as the government picks winners and losers, companies are going to do what they can to be the winner.

Posted by: SH at August 25, 2016 10:16 AM (FJDuC)

273 To be clear, I'm in favor of a patent system that does give a monopoly to creators and believe in general that those creators should be able to exploit that government monopoly however they see fit. Whether 20 years is an approrpriate amount of time or not, I don't know.

But to the extent that there are other government factors allowing companies to extend their monopoly - not through patent protection, but through other means, such as FDA delays in approval, well that I am against.

I'd eliminate that by eliminating the FDA. I'm not sure why the FDA is necessary, and believe it probably causes more harm than good. State governments, litigation, and public oversight are likely to be much better actors in keeping drug companies in line.

Posted by: SH at August 25, 2016 10:22 AM (FJDuC)

-----------

In terms of the patent system, yes. Everything else - no. I wish to eliminate this type of crony capitalism - the only real way to do it is to shrink the government.

I don't think a company should just be able to recoup their investment - they should be able to capture what they can in excess. But the government should not be extending patents though other means beyond the patent term.

I'm willing to blame both actors in this case, but ultimately the government is to blame.

We're telling you the price is outrageous. YOU need to go into that market with a competing device and rake those outrageous profits also. Only if you try - you would find out that you would be legally prohibited from doing so.

You are applying laissez faire arguments to a market deeply regulated by the crony capitalism government. It would be nice if the market was free - it is not. That is price gouging - like selling bottled water for $50 a pint after a hurricane hits.

It is not a patent situation - it is an FDA approval situation. The FDA barrier to entry in that market is around a billion dollars - since that is how much it costs to gain FDA approval. Nobody is going to spend a billion dollars to sell a $600 dollar item particularly since the current manufacturer can lower prices if somebody else tries to enter the market. It is Crony Capitalism at its worst. An example of a government enforced monopoly with no price regulation.

The market is grossly distorted by that government barrier - which is why the price is $600 in the first place. In an actual free market the price would be around $25. So no, the "market" does not support a $600 dollar price.
