Devastating Quake Rocks Central Italy Overnight; Local Mayor Says, "The Countryside Disappeared"

No forewarning, and the quake struck in the dead of night, at 3:22 a.m.

ROME — At least 73 people were killed and dozens more were missing or feared dead Wednesday after a magnitude-6.2 earthquake and a series of aftershocks struck several towns in central Italy, toppling scores of buildings, according to Italy’s civil protection agency.

Hardest hit were towns in the regions of Umbria, Lazio and Marche some 80 to 100 miles northeast of Rome....

Earlier, the Italian news agency ANSA reported at least 35 were killed in the town of Amatrice, 11 in Accumoli, near Rieti, and 17 in the province of Ascoli Piceno, which includes Pescara del Tronto.

Much of city center of Amatrice was covered with metal and rock debris that collapsed in the initial quake and aftershocks. Resident of this picturesque medieval town of around 3,000 people gathered in the piazzas, dazed by the quake and fearful of more temblors....

In some towns, rescue teams alternated bulldozers with bare hands to dig through piles of rubble looking for claw through piles of rubble for possible survivors as authorities warned the death toll is likely to rise.

I saw one official say the number of missing was "undefined" -- an ominous sort of understatement.

10 Yeah. Yeah this is awful. A huge quake hit Burma too, not clear how much damage was done there yet. The first estimates are like 1 death but I'm highly skeptical. There was actually a ring of quakes around the south and east of Asia and Europe last night, like a ripple effect from Japan to Italy.

Isn't there some index of desirability of places to live factoring in risk of hurricanes, tornados, quakes, etc.? You could also factor in normal weather, and then have another axis be cost of living or something.

I.e. the nicest places should be the most expensive, but maybe there are some bargains in there, based on what you like (city vs. suburb vs. country, etc.).

168 yankeefifth, Italy has had its own illegals problem for some time - but mostly from Albania. The current insanity has not done them much good, either, and they have/had a special part of that too, thanks to the ties with/proximity to Libya.

Mostly legal, but on Sundays in the center of Rome one used to wonder - "did 10 large cruise ships full of Filipina women just dock close by, or what??". Nope - it was the day off for the zillions of (mostly) Filipina au pair/nannies who look after the (dwindling numbers of) babies and pre-school kids in Rome.

I may not like her comedy or SJW tendencies but I learned she is a very charitable person who is not doing it for the publicity. She donated entire movie salary to a Veteran's organization . 308 Kayla Mueller's parents are in the news again complaining about how Doctors Without Borders didn't even try to rescue their daughter from Syria.

DWB says it wasn't their responsibility to rescue Kayla since she wasn't working for them in the first place, and if she had been working for them, they would never have allowed her to go to Syria in the first place since it would have been too dangerous for an American woman.

Kayla's parents say DWB is a great organization -- but it was heartless and wrong not to try to rescue Kayla.

I'm sorry for their loss, and have no doubt their grief is geniune, but come on. DWB can't go around trying to rescue every unaffiliated western dope who gets themselves kidnapped because they wanted to go sightseeing in a war zone.

Kayla got herself into that situation. She had no business in Syria, and her idiot boyfriend had no business allowing her to tag along with him when he went to Syria to work on some hospital computers for DWB. Both Kayla and her boyfriend knew she would be in great danger in Syria, but Kayla wanted to risk it, so she did. And it ended horribly for her, just as everyone tried to warn her it would.

But it wasn't DWB's responsibility. No matter how much Kayla's parents want to blame somebody other than Kayla for what happened to her.
