I think the technology exists that using solar sails and lasers, we could get a satellite out there in something like 15 years. Of course, by the time it gets there, it'll be traveling at like .2* the speed of light, so the amount of time it'll have to actually survey the planet would be pretty small.

From what I'd seen, if the solar sail were to rely on only radiation from the star, it wouldn't accelerate quickly enough, because the further away it gets, the light is weaker. So you'd have to first build a giant space laser (seriously), and direct it at the sail.

We don't have a giant space laser to slow it down on the back half of the trip, though.

I think you're confusing Iraq and Afghanistan. Troop levels in Afghanistan were around 25,000 during Bush and only escalated to 50,000 in 2009 before eventually peaking around 100,000. We weren't spending billions on training the Afghan forces during the Bush years. And your last prescriptions are not advocated by any leader in the US military or supported by any recent counterinsurgency experiences.

You laugh, but from a physics standpoint, that's basically what you'd want to do. Practically, though, any laser that we could build here wouldn't be perfectly focused over the distance of several lightyears, (or even that we'd be able to point something with that degree of precision).

So if you need to read/enter your DL # or something like that you don't have to find your wallet. It was probably on her phone that she had synched. I do the same thing. The trick is to take lot of nude photographs of yourself and then drop in the personal ID stuff in the middle. For people like Ms. Jones and myself, that's usually good enough to scare people away before they get to the ID pics.
