It's also being reported that his story is actually more correct that initially reported. USA Today did some investigative reporting and the "ugly entitled American trashes gas station" narrative has some big holes in it. Plus, it may very well have been that they were shaken down, at gunpoint, by off-duty cops working a security detail. So armed robbery isn't really a stretch, if that's correct.

There is plenty of surplus tracer ammo for sale, and also plenty of tracer projectiles for sale that you can load yourself if you reload.

Many states (the usual suspects) ban all such ammo, so check your state laws.

Bans in places like CA aren't, like almost all gun laws there, entirely stupid and indefensible, due to fire danger much of the year.

.223 and 5.56x45 will chamber the same. But 5.56 is loaded hotter. The SAMI specs on the pressures are higher for 5.56.

Which means - shooting 5.56 through a .223 "COULD" cause that thing to blow up on you. Will certainly fatigue it over time.

7.62x51 and .308, stupid enough, works just the opposite. .308 is hotter.

5.56mm and .223 case dimensions and assembled round dimensions are extremely close, so the rounds can be physically interchanged.

However, 5.56mm ammunition has a much higher chamber pressure. 5.56mm ammunition should not be fired in firearms marked for .223, unless the particular firearm (even bolt-actions) in question is indicated by the manufacturer to be safe using 5.56mm ammunition.

The Mini-14 is one example.
