Although the Olympic Games have ended they are still fresh in our minds. Or at least fresh enough for an ONT entry or two. 80 years ago a young American by the name of Jesse Owens was on fire. Over the years people compare athletes of old to today's athletes. For example how would Owens hold up against today's track stars? It looks like Jesse Owens would be a medal contender in 2016.

Many WalMarts sell rifles and shotguns, and all of them sell ammo, including the caliber used in those (gasp) AR-type sporters.
They don't block access to Amazon, one of their biggest competitors.

I watched Trump's speech at Akron. WOW has he improved. He's using a teleprompter but he still sounds like Trump! He's doing homework (or he's letting someone on his team do homework) and he's working the day's news into his larger points about Hillary's crookedness and her danger to the country. He started there in early Vietnam and was workin up into his 80's thru the WOT. (As of 2yrs ago, he was still at it)
He lost his legs, (both below knee), stealin coal from a train as a 12yr old. Slipped while tryin to escape and that was that. A few years later, Newly elected Senator Byrd got him a scholarship/work study at the Hanger Center/Plant in Charleston. He turned out to have a gift for findin the correct "fit" for those in need.
He shared that he'd been to numerous war torn countries over the years. Especially those with heavy land mine usage. Africa, Central America to name but two.
He essentially established the modern prosthetics industry in the 80's in Central America during the Cintra years.
I don't think I've ever met someone who has improved the quality of life for more people the world over than this guy.
He was so matter of fact an humble, that he left me in awe. Truly my pleasure to meet someone like that.

There's a house not far from me that used to be a meth house, and was really dilapidated. Well, it's obviously been flipped as it's since been completely renovated and looks beautiful, and I see the 'open house' signs in front of it on the weekends. It's getting looks.
But... I'd bet it would have sold by now if the owners didn't have to tell people (and for the record I think they *should* have to tell people), it used to be a meth house. I'd imagine people are worried that if they buy, Crazy Timbo fresh from Terminal Island is gonna stop by at 2am for his first fix outta the joint and refuse to leave until he gets it.

Going on year four now waiting to have a Social Security Disability appeal hearing.
We are just enough above the poverty line so that we are no longer on Medicaid but you help subsidize my health insurance.
The small town we live in does all it can with its local food bank. Our once a month box for two helps tremendously. Church goers I have never met have given us envelopes of cash now and then. It's humbling but a sure sign of God's love.
So, you need to hear it again. Thank you. What you provide makes a difference that politicians will never understand.
It's not where I thought we would be after 26 years of marriage but it is a perspective on how generous people are.

I didn't take notes on the girls' ages, but it looked like "bam....ba-dam....bam." Is the distance between #1 and #2 the same as the distance between #3 and #4? I also thought it was particularly nice that you caught each girl at a significant time in church.
In Junior High, I lived across the street from the Parker family in Davis, CA -- who, IIRC, had six girls. While we used to joke that Papa Parker could never leave the seat up, it was indisputably the hub of the neighborhood.

True. That's an especially glaring example, but I was also making the point that all Muslim lands outside of Saudi Arabia are occupied. There were other people there, peoples who (for the most part) still exist and were displaced by their wars of conquest.
None of them have any legs to stand on where occupation is concerned.

John Fogerty was right to fight him, but apparently something went sideways somewhere and he just became hopelessly bitter about his situation with Tom Fogerty, Doug Clifford and Stu Cook.
It's both maddening and kind of sad, CCR was one of the all-time greatest bands ever and I personally think there was a lot more great music there, if they had ever gotten the chance to write, perform and share it.

I know that to this day, Stu Cook and Doug Clifford wonder why Fogerty had to behave the way he did towards them at the end of the band. And, shit, the bulk of licensed sheet music for all bands was not even reviewed by the writers. It was just hack stuff put out by labels.
Boingo; they had a good long run. I have a hard time thinking Elfman feels that it was embarrassing. He put ever damn ounce of himself in the concerts. I was at one of the '95 concerts. They were madmen.

Springsteen, IMO, is good at writing songs for other people to sing. His own renditions of the songs he's written that other musicians have performed are far, far worse. Compare his rendition of Blinded By The Light to that of Manfred Mann, or his rendition of Fire to that of The Pointer Sisters. Springsteen comes up short every time.
Mellenkamp's songs at least sound good when performed by Mellenkamp.

Boingo was awesomesauce until the end.....and, then, the negativity started. Elfman started into this, "I do movie soundtracks and everything else is false" bullshit. The rest of the band got the whole "restraining order" vibe. And......bloop!!!! Best fucking band of the '80s sinks without a trace -- and without a successor -- and without teaching any bands in the 00s about how music should be done.

Elvis loved the song, and he was totally planning to add it to his repertoire. But then, he went and did something stupid. He died.
Just imagine if he'd lived a little longer. His rendition of Margaritaville would've been awesome (I can hear it in my head right now), and we'd have never had to hear Jimmy Buffett sing, because he'd have just been a staff songwriter on Elvis's payroll.

The thing is that a lot of 2000's post-grunge bands have picked up on some of that 80's vibe. Not necessarily Boingo in particular, but the internetz have a long tail, as they say.
And you will never, ever be able to tell me that Elfman's rock track on Wanted wasn't a Boingo song.

I remember seeing an interview he gave between leaving Black Sabbath and going solo.
He wasn't the most eloquent speaker, but he came across as a regular guy. He said that "Ozzy" was his stage persona, but that as a person he was "John Osbourne".
Now he is a drugged out shell who has let his wife effectively take over management of his life.

Supposedly when Clapton was recording his album in the late 1990s with J.J. Cale, EC actually went to his place in Escondido, California to do some tracks. Well, Cale got hungry for, of all places, Olive Garden... so off the both of them went.
Nobody else in the Olive Garden could believe that *the* Eric Clapton was munching endless salad, garlic breadsticks and Italian food at their little chain restaurant location in Escondido, naturally. :-)

The thing about Boingo was that they had things like gamelans or horn sections that weren't going to happen in post-grunge bands. They had a rock-solid rock'n'roll drums/bass/guitars/keyboards thing going with a theatrical overlay.
Which made it so very disappointing when Elfman hid their scores and buried their arrangements....and later said that playing arenas was for losers. It wasn't enough that he'd opted out -- he intentionally buried what he knew so that he couldn't be followed.

I heard a story on Carolla's show I think, that, John Belushi LOVED EC!!
Anyway, one of his friends was going to meet him and John asked if the friend could pass along that he was a BIG fan!
The Guy, (actually, Steven Bishop, Oscar winner, the guy playing guitar in Animal House)... told EC he was, and EC said that he didn't like John's portrayal of Joe Cocker (EVEN THO JOE DID IT ALONG WITH HIM LATER!!)
Anyway, Stephen told Beluchi and unknown to him, John was tripping acid!!
Talk about a bad trip!!

I read a great story awhile back. I didn't save the link, though. A couple had tickets to his show, and had lunch at an outdoor cafe beforehand. The husband noticed Dylan sitting at the next table reading a newspaper. He said to his wife, "Don't say a word, but look behind you." She must have had a shocked look on her face, because Dylan looked up from his paper and gave her a big smile.
Nobody said a word. When they got up to leave, he smiled at them again, and went back to his paper.
If they had tried to talk to him or ask for an autograph, he probably would have clammed up and given them the brush-off.

what could I say? Merle Main once showed me around his airplane collection because I wandered onto the Ontario Oregon airport when he had them rolled out for an air show and I cared more about the plane than who he was.
This is only impressive to someone who cares.
He had an operational deHaviliand Vampire in RAAF markings, and mentioned that his pilot didn't like to take off from the Ontario airport because Malheur butte was right there, and if it flamed out he didn't have much maneuver room to put it down.

Okay I listen to Sweet Jane. The 4 minute intro was great . I just can't get past Lou Reed's spoken word. I then clicked on Velvet Undergrounds version. Pretty good. Reed can compose good music and his lyrics not bad. It's an aquired taste.

Neil Young took a young and pretty singer by the name of Nicolette Larson out for a drive in the country once. She found one of his demo tapes on the floor at her feet, for a song called Lotta Love. Young told her, "Oh, yeah, go ahead and take that tape home. You can have that song."
She put together a rendition of that song, and planned out an album with that song on it.
The day before her album came out, Young released an album with his own rendition of the song.

So, Nintendo dropped out of making card games and started getting more into the electronic toys and games market. This naturally led to Donkey Kong in the next decade.
Incidentally, Donkey Kong was the result of a failed deal to make a Popeye video game. King Features Syndicate backed out on the deal, so Nintendo created a new original property using the same mechanics.
Originally, it would've been Popeye running through those stages, dodging barrels thrown by Bluto while trying to rescue Olive Oyl.
After Donkey Kong proved to be such a big hit, King Features got back in touch with Nintendo and said, "Okay, yeah, we'll agree to let you make a Popeye video game now". Nintendo went ahead and made a Popeye game, but it was nowhere near the smash hit Donkey Kong had been.

In English, the possessive is indicated by having an apostrophe-s after the noun -- e.g.
The donkey's dick
Destiny's Child
etc.
Also in English, the verb "is" is often contracted after most pronouns (and some nouns) by spelling it not as "is" but as apostrophe-s:
He's a freak of nature
This election's rigged
etc.
Now -- notice something about these two rules?
A terrible collision is about to happen, because both rules involves apostrophe-s, and there is exactly ONE point of overlap between them: i-t-s. The English language's greatest dilemma.
The contraction for "it is," according to the second rule, should therefore be spelled "it's".
But according to the first rule, the possessive of "it" should also therefore be spelled "it's."
What to do?
Well, English has all sorts of eccentricities, including the dreaded homograph -- words that are spelled exactly the same, but are in fact totally different words.
Take this sentence for example:
"When Luigi crashed his moped during the scooter race, he moped around for a week."
See? English has all sorts of examples like that. So in theory it would be totally acceptable for the contraction of "it is" and the possessive of "it" to BOTH be spelled exactly the same -- that is to say, "it's."
But somewhere way back in the mists of time, the Anti-Homography Gods declared the it's-it's duality simply intolerable, because of all the homographic pairs, they were the most commonplace, and frequently occur numerous times each in any random sample paragraphs.
And so it was decided -- illogically, yes, but most English "exceptions" are illogical, and you just have to learn them and live with them -- that one of the "it's"s had to change.
And contractions-it's and possessive-it's were put on trial, and contraction-it's was declared the winner: Henceforth, "it is" would remain contracted to "it's." BUT, the loser was possessive-it's which was condemned to be changed, simply so that it could be distinguished from contraction-it's. And it was decided -- again, in the mists of time, by deciders unknown -- to make the simplest possible change, which was to drop the apostrophe when making the possessive of "it." Henceforth, the possessive of "it" would forever be spelled "its." With no apostrophe.
Is it crazy? Yes. Is it illogical? Yes. It is even necessary? No. But even so, that's the way it has been for at least 300 years, and probably longer.
It's just one of those kooky grammar rules that you have to memorize:
The possessive of "it" is spelled without an apostrophe as "its."
It is the ONLY possessive spelled this way.
But that's English for ya -- a kooky language.
Hopefully, this traumatic lecture will impress this rule on you like PTSD on a WWI infantryman crawling back from No Man's Land.

Donkey Kong was directly driven by the failure of Radar Scope. Nintendo had expected this slide and shoot game to be a huge hit (I liked it quite a lot as that was my favorite genre then) and committed to manufacturing far more machine than it turned out the market was looking to buy. In desperation, they sought to produce a new game using the exact same hardware base, so only the ROMs and art panels on the machines would need to be changed.
This ended up being assigned to a employee named Shigeru Miyamoto, who'd been with the company since 1977 but hadn't really found a role for his talents. The Popeye license was considered for this but the hardware wasn't up to a satisfactory depiction of the characters. The eventual Popeye arcade machine had considerably stronger hardware and was visually impressive for the era in how well it reproduced the familiar characters. So the game ended up being Donkey Kong with original, mostly, characters. What was intended as a move to save the company from a massive loss on unsellable arcade units instead became the #1 game and required far more machines to be built.

"His," "hers" and "theirs" are specialty-form custom-spelled possessive pronouns, and as such sort of fall outside the general rule of adding apostrophe-s to nouns. In particular, "his" probably started life as "him's" way back when, and evolved to be a "new" word once it got slur-shortened. "Hers" and "theirs" are slightly different terms of speech, and are not parallel to "its," a distinction that is too tedious to explain this late at night. I'm all explained out!

But you hers and theirs are also different situations. Let's go with my "Its ass" example. You would say "His ass" and "its ass", but you wouldn't say "hers ass" or "theirs ass." But they do lend to the precedent that possessive pronouns do not get apostrophes. Just can't think of a good example where you could substitute an "its" in for a situation you use "hers" or "theirs."

There is no federal law against building in the flood plain. They do not have the authority to tell you where to build except on federal land. They are not supposed to be able to get federal loans and flood insurance is all. But they always waiver that.

They already do that, although they do not call it a "flood plane". They call it a flood zone. They recently redrew all the flood zone maps and included my MIL's house in it. She is located inside the city limits so at least half of the city is in the "flood zone".
Where that comes into play is if it is in a federally designated flood zone the banks require it to be covered by flood insurance before they will finance a mortgage on it. And flood insurance is high as hell.
Fortunately for my MIL her house is paid for but I suspect her neighbor's house is not since they have not been there but a couple of years. .

.I got a waiver on our old house in Connecticut when they started messing around with the new flood zones. We lived on the Thames River by one of the coves and they changed our entire peninsula into a flood zone and were forcing everyone to buy flood insurance.
I talked to them a few times and finally convinced them that if our neighborhood which was located 60+ feet above the high tide level on the river were to flood there would be no one left alive anywhere to claim or pay out the flood insurance. They finally exempted us.

I think the most desirable land will always have some elevation and carry a correspondingly higher price tag. So an area becomes popular, prices rise, and the next thing you know developers are building where they shouldn't be building.
I hate Washington DC, but local zoning laws make enormously good sense. But liberals call them racist and discriminatory. In their opinion, if they even thought it through, does it make sense to make billions of dollars in low interest loans for rebuilding after the predictable flood occurs? What happens if the neutral country becomes not so neutral and holds the venue ransom?
#1. World games and other sporting events, World Cup, etc. could be held there. Housing, food prep, sporting venues would already be there.
#2. Flatten the capital city. Hunt down and exterminate the country's leaders.

Anybody recall seeing your home appraisal data sheets reflect massive changes in values? 10-12 years ago your total appraised value was $100k. Say $15k for the lot and $85k for the house (improvements). Then one year it flips and the lot is worth $40k and house is worth $60K.
10 years later the lot is $110k and the house is $70k for a total of $180k now.
You pay flood insurance based on the appraised value. in line with your homeowner's policy.
Five years later your house in Meyerland floods for the first time. Appraised value is now $260k with a lot value of $140k.
FEMA only covers the value of the improvements. If the damage to the improvements is greater than 50% of the APPRAISED value of the improvements, the entire thing has to meet current ICC/NAHB/Local Codes.
You can't even qualify for a loan through a bank on property that doesn't meet the codes if you simply want to get back to where you were. You can qualify for a loan to tear it down and rebuild because the value of the property is the backstop to justify it.
Local taxing entities see growth in tax base due to new much higher appraised values and this also spurns gentrification throughout neighborhood to drive them up more.
Win-Win for eveyone but the people who have to pay more to live where they had been. That is why Mayor Anise Parker did not mind the floods in Houston last year.
