And my personal pet peeve? Ethanol takes thousands of acres out of food production. People on the margin of the starvation graph will die. Not in this country, but somewhere, people are dying because of our ethanol policy.
Our biofuels policy was meant to boost our energy security while saving the environment, but it fails on both counts. It's a remarkable example of a policy finding a sour spot, and the only stakeholder that benefits from this farce is the U.S. corn industry.

Heh. That's been the case with me lately. July wasn't a bad month at all, but August has been brutal. I skipped mowing the lawn for three weeks in a row because I didn't want to set foot outdoors at all, much less do any work out there. When the weeds start growing taller than the grass, you know things are getting out of hand.
On Sunday evening a storm came through and cooled things down somewhat. On Monday I looked at the five-day forecast and saw that I would have two or three days of decent weather, then it would be back up to 90 by Friday. I don't like to do yard work after working all day, but it was now or never. So I finally mowed the lawn last night. It was getting dark by the time I finished.

Did you ever read any of Mark Steyn's stuff on Sinatra? Last year he posted pieces twice a week about Sinatra's top 100 songs (in his opinion) in honor of the 100th anniversary of Sinatra's birth. It was a fascinating series. I read every one.
And last September we saw Frank Sinatra Jr. during his tour commemorating his father's centennial. It was a really good show. And not too many months later he died. Such a shame.
(I assure you I had nothing to do with it.)

Pretty well. Son is working for Kroger and after 4 months they're, sort of, promoting him. He'll be doing the custodial work there, but it's twice as many hours and a $2/hour raise which is a big deal for a 16 year-old.
The guy they'd planned on training just disappeared after being hired so they asked Son if he'd like the job and said he was the first of their current employees they thought of.

I remembered all the time I'd spent pulling weeds in my parents' yard as a teenager, as punishment for my various youthful indiscretions, and I told my friends, "I'll take care of this."
I grabbed their shiny new weed-puller and got to work. I pulled up hundreds of weeds over the course of several hours.
By the time I was done, my right hand had swollen to look like one of those surgical gloves Howie Mandel used to pull down over his face and inflate by exhaling through his nose.
And their lawn ended up looking like Christian Bale's hair in the movie American Hustle.
But the HOA rescinded its warning about the weeds. This time, the lawn did not win.

Local media never announces that a GOP candidate is coming to town unless it is to give information on where the protest will be held.
Trump came to Roanoke a month ago to do a townhall, about 5K showed up to try to go to it, convention center's main room help 1200, they put another 800 in an adjacent room.
Did the local media publicize the Trump event? No. They did publicize that there would be a protest at a certain location and gave the contact info of the organizers. About 30 protesters were out there, but they got more media coverage than Trump/Pence.
Back in March, went to a Rubio rally. No media announcement of the event, about 5K came to it on a Sunday night. Again, 30 protesters outside the event. Guess who got the vast majority of coverage on the news that night?

So, little family history here....I have an uncle (by marriage) who can sing nonexistent songs in real time. They have rhymes, verses, bridges, and choruses -- nice little melodies -- and actually make more sense than about 35% of pop tunes on the radio. He doesn't have the greatest voice, but has an ok tenor. But if you try to figure out where that song came from, you can't....he generated it himself in real-time (he actually might have thought of the pieces separately, but the first time the song was ever heard in meatspace was when he sang it [which was usually the last time it was heard, as well]).
My dad, by contrast, could not carry a tune in a bucket. Gregorian chants typically have more sense of rhythm or melody. He would oddly recite some things, however, at odd times -- but with the same cadence, each time. Being that my uncle could just invent stuff on the fly, it was assumed that my dad just had this set of weird chant-y things he had dreamed-up that he liked.

Watched bits of the new "Better Late Than Never" show, with Shatner, Bradshaw, Winkler and Foreman, along with their keeper/minder/facilitator, whose name escapes me at the moment.
They goofball around good bits of Japanese culture, food, entertainment and scenery.
Interesting mix amongst 'em. Winkler is the wimp in the mix. Shatner and Bradshaw play offa each other, big time.
The show goes on next to other Oriental countries. But I think Anna Puma and our other experts on all things in the world of things Japan, would have the more informed opinion than mine.

Yes I saw some noiseless pickups for Stratocasters, $100 plus labor. A bargain and a great idea for someone else I think. As it is I keep it on the midway positions to cancel the noise out.

I'm trying to catch a ground squirrel in a live trap for bait. No luck yet. The squirrels die quickly in the live trap. That was my idea use those big staples and pin the squirrel or rat in the trap.
We are trying. The rancher next to me said he live trapped a fox with old sausage. I'm not sure what time of year it was.

We haven't tried eggs. I've heard they're hard to trap. We put the tuna outside the cage, it didn't eat it.
I put a trail cam near the cage. The fox is checking it out. The other thing is I may need to camo the cage better.
There is plenty of food also. Rats, bunnies, squirrels, possum, birds.

I haven't seen it in person, just the trail cam pics. When I saw the kit I want to just move them to the back of the ranch. There's plenty of food and water back there.

The problem is that foxes are smrt right? So a smart fox isn't going to get any where near a trap when the hunting is good.
Why not wait until the weather gets rough and they are a little bit more needy?
And beyond that you are never going to catch the whole group in the same trap.
It might make sense to just make noise, find their hole and scare them off. I do that with raccoons.

I can't really stomach my own party anymore. Really want to start a new one for the next election,. I'm going to grudgingly help put Trump over the top this time, then get to work building something different, because all of the PACmen, consultant-industrial complex, and party machinery people (such as Priebus) keep thinking that it's all about them and forcing the base to go along with their agenda. We've been trying to fix the Republican Party from within for 8 years, and it's not working.
My goal is simple, it's a reform movement, it's the governmental version of a factory reset. We throw out everything but the Constitution and its amendments, and go back to basics. We apply the 10th Amendment harshly. Social issues aren't in the Constitution, thus should be handled by the states. There's no sense in trying to force Alabama to be San Francisco, or vice versa. Instead of one-size-fits-none, you'd have 50 different experiments in democracy. Success would be emulated, failures would be discarded, and we'd all improve for it. Corporate welfare is right out. No stimulus, no bailouts, no subsidies, nothing.

The reason I'm trying to trap them the guy that works close to my house was driving the tractor and he saw it crossing my driveway towards the chickens. It was 11:30 AM.
He thought it was the feral cat I feed until he got close. It ran the other way into the underbrush. We couldn't find it. It wasn't startled by the tractor either so I'm thinking it lives nearby.

Maybe I should start one. My crazy idea is to hijack the Reform Party. It no longer exists in any meaningful sense, and it wouldn't take many people at all to hijack it. The name's got recognition, Reform is a good word to describe what we want, and the best part is that it's still on the ballot in most states, despite being an abandoned shell.
So why not be the hermit crab and move in? It'd be a delicious irony to turn the spoiler party into the movement that makes the Republicans go the way of the Whigs and defeats the DC Establishment in both parties.

OK, that is a weird coincidence -- I just saw Lord Huron at a music festival (Outside Lands).
They were -- how to put this gently? -- completely soporific. I couldn't tell if they were tuning up, or actually playing a song.
Despite this, 50,000 people were screaming in ecstasy in the audience.
I thought forgivingly to myself, "OK, maybe this is like the Beatles at Shea Stadium -- they're playing a great set, but it's impossible to tell because of all the noise the audience is making."
So I went off to see another band (who were also mediocre, as every performer at the festival seemed to be). (Thank god I had gotten in for free, or I'd have been pissed.)
So, the video embedded in this thread above has finally given me a chance to hear what the big deal is about Lord Huron, heard clearly this time without the screaming.
And...they were just as boring and unremarkable on their studio recording as they were live.
So -- what am I missing here? Why the hubbub over Lord Huron?
It's not that I think they're bad -- it's just that can't discern anything remarkable or memorable about their music. A solid "meh."

into law which punishes people who go out of State to buy guns and bring
them back to IL with the intent to sell them.

.It won't be enforced. The last study I saw said that less than 1% of all illegal guns seized in Chicago were referred for weapons charges.

PP just released a poll that shows Trump up by 15 in Utah over clinton.
Remember the PP poll was conducted after the worst weeks his campaign ever had and with the media in full blown attack mode on him to boot. Plus this poll was done after McMuffin joined the race, who is polling at 9%.

I do homeschool, and we haven't started yet. He has 3 outside classes that will start the day after Labor Day. I have the rest of his stuff here, and I've told him that I will be giving him little things to do soon so that he can get a little bit out of the way before everything starts proper.
He is doing American History (with me) and American Government (with a wonderful teacher) this year and I am planning lots of field trips. We did a ton when his siblings were younger but he was in a stroller for most of them!
