11 U.N. Admits Role In Cholera Epidemic In Haiti
The New York Times, Aug. 18, 2016

By Jonathan M. Katz

For the first time since a cholera epidemic believed to be imported by United Nations peacekeepers began killing thousands of Haitians nearly six years ago, the office of Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has acknowledged that the United Nations played a role in the initial outbreak and that a “significant new set of U.N. actions” will be needed to respond to the crisis. The deputy spokesman for the secretary general, Farhan Haq, said in an email this week that “over the past year, the U.N. has become convinced that it needs to do much more regarding its own involvement in the initial outbreak and the suffering of those affected by cholera.” He added that a “new response will be presented publicly within the next two months, once it has been fully elaborated, agreed with the Haitian authorities and discussed with member states.” The statement comes on the heels of a confidential report sent to Mr. Ban by a longtime United Nations adviser. Written by Philip Alston, a New York University law professor who serves as one of a few dozen experts, known as special rapporteurs, who advise the organization on human rights issues, the draft language stated plainly that the epidemic “would not have broken out but for the actions of the United Nations.”

16 It's not over for the other swimmers who were held up:

Two U.S. swimmers were pulled from their flight out of Rio and
detained for police questioning, in connection with a controversial
claim that they and teammates James Feigen and Ryan Lochte were robbed
at gunpoint during the Olympic Games, PEOPLE has confirmed. Gunnar Bentz
and Jack Conger were detained, but later released, after boarding their
Wednesday night flight. According to Yahoo Sports, they had cleared
customs before being detained.

Patrick Sandusky, United States Olympic Committee spokesperson said
in a statement obtained by PEOPLE: "Jack Conger and Gunnar Bentz were
detained Wednesday night shortly before their flight was scheduled to
depart from Rio. They were released by local authorities with the
understanding that they would continue their discussions about the
incident on Thursday."

I'm not getting why this was a "controversial" claim - has there not been other reports of crime where the victims were Olympic athletes and games attendees? The guys were drunk, and it happened ~ 4am, so some details may be fuzzy. Am I missing something?

28 Heh. Russki troops training on the Uke border.

Very clever. The Ukes will have to deploy their best forces to the area, just in case. Ivan will gain valuable intel just from that, and this will weaken the Ukes in Donetsk and other eastern regions.

Add to this the stress it will place on the Uke forces - full of sullen conscripts and ill-trained paramilitaries - and it's a brilliant move to degrade Uke capacity without firing a shot.

I think either one would be a blast. Mrs H and I did the Inside Passage cruise and loved it. The ship stopped at many spots along the way and offered extensive tour opportunities, all of which were well done.

With a lodge, you'd learn a lot about one area, but we really liked the cruise and had been planning on doing it again.

Cruises have a couple of benefits to staying in hotels. If you have the luxury of living near the port of departure, you don't have to worry about air travel (which generally sucks, and increases the total cost of the trip). Cruise ships always will have something for you to do, so you never have to worry about being bored, and the excursions (which will have additional costs) are usually pretty good. I've always had great experiences with the food on the cruise ship as well, which means you don't have to worry about spending money figuring out where to eat.

That being said, if you really just want to go out and explore the country, you can't really do that on a cruise because you have to be back on the ship before they leave the port.

What an idiot. That comparison defies any sense of reality. There is abundant proof, real live evidence, that Donald Trump is pro-woman (however it would be defined in Steinem's pinheaded thinking). Especially in a business sense, it's patently obvious. He's not anti-woman anything, unless you could Megyn Kelly's blood shooting from her wherever. 58 Slippery Slope - Italian Islamic leader wants legal recognition of polygamy

The founder of Italy’s main Islamic organization says that since the country now recognizes civil unions for same-sex couples, there’s no reason that polygamous relationships shouldn’t also be afforded legal protection.

Only months after Italy approved civil unions for lesbians and gays, a leader of the country’s Islamic community is using the move to argue for the civil recognition of polygamy. He also claimed that Pope Francis’ silence regarding his suggestion means that the pontiff has perhaps understood that it’s a “simple civil right” and a matter of equality.

Hamza Piccardo is founder of the Union of Islamic Communities in Italy, an umbrella organization which represents most of Italy’s Muslim communities. Recently, Piccardo shared a picture of the mayor of Milan with a gay couple after celebrating their union on Facebook.
Piccardo accompanied the picture with the following message:

“If it’s only a matter of civil rights, then polygamy is a civil right.”

Most likely it was the actual police who robbed them in the first place - since they are used to being able to do that sort of thing without consequence (see Federales, Mexico for an example)

-----------------------------------------------

A farmer and 16 cows have been killed by gas fumes from a manure holding tank in WI. I suspect it was Hydrogen Sulfide that we were discussing several days ago. That gas is highly toxic and the normal "rotten egg" smell that accompanies it was probably overridden by the cow manure smell so the farmer would not recognize it. This emphasizes the need for being careful. If you ever open something that has been closed up for a while and get that rotten egg smell you need to either close it back up or evacuate immediately. This stuff will kill you dead dead dead.

Joe asked "What are you gonna do, shoot me?" and he was shot multiple times in the chest, died in the street. Needless to say, the "cop" got off scot-free.

We had some kids come to work with one of our engineers and his wife on Monday (their neighbor's grade school age daughters). Both were wearing those things. Lots of flashy lights and annoying beeps. No rashes.

Once we got them to leave the trackers on the desk where they were quiet, it was actually a lot of fun. The kids ran errands around the shop, stuck shipping labels on boxes and had a grand old time. Especially in the afternoon when we sat them down in front of our USB-connected microscope that we use to check solder joints on circuit boards. Looked at dollar bills, quarters, circuit board cleaning brushes (ewwwww) and dead crickets that we found in the warehouse.

Vlad the Impaler, defender of Christianity from the Ottoman muslims, had a great defense infrastructure.

In 1462, he impaled his enemies -- approximately 20,000 -- and when Mehmed II saw this, he promptly turned around and went home to Constantinople.

The 20,000 weren't entirely dead. Vlad cleverly figured out how to impale a person from the rectum to the neck without killing the victim and causing them to bleed to death. Many of the 20,000 were still alive for days and crying for death.

The Romanians loved Vlad.
