The Capture of Puerto Bello, 21 November 1739
George Chambers

I found this on an amazing site called History of The Sailing Warship in The Marine Art. A bit of a clunky name, but a fun place to poke around...

49 Willowed from other thread:

So actually it's no surprise to me at all that there are Dem voters who will react negatively to any real attempts to help blacks. They're quite and happy with the present system - get black votes, pay lip service to pc, without having to actually deal with black people.
Posted by: Donna and V. (sans ampersands at the present time) at August 23, 2016 09:37 AM (u0lmX)

I'm going to say it's not just Dem middle class parents who don't want vouchers. I saw them used by inner city kids to attend a Christian school one of my kids attended. It did not go well. You don't get the absolute disaster kids. For the most part though, you are getting kids with a range of academic and social issues that drag down the rest of the school. Their parent(s)/guardian(s) moan and complain about being asked to do or pay anything.

Here is what your nice suburban school is going to get if the inner city kids get vouchers:
1. Academically behind kids who you either flunk, spend inordinate amounts of time trying to help, or dumb things down. (Based on past results expect the last option.) Also cries of racism.
2. Increased behavioral problems. Also cries of racism.
3. Cries of racism.
4. Fleeing parents who want their kids to learn and don't have time to deal with all of the 1 and 2 nonsense.
5. Cries of racism.
6. Parents/guardians who complain about every little thing not given to them mainly because...racism.

BTW, this isn't a racial thing. The black kids who were being sent by parents who paid their way were like the rest of the kids there.

62 CBD, Thanks for another winner! I love evocative sea and ship paintings, especially from the age of sail. Chambers' paintings are great. Without trying for 'photo' realism, his accurate use of color and level of detail enhance the overall effect of the painting. Very appealing. I would like to have any of his works on my wall. It's too bad he died so young.

Thanks, also, for that website. I predict a few hours spent examining it. (Mrs. JTB is rolling her eyes at the sheer understatement. She knows me beyond such BS rhetorical flourishes.)

69 Savannah had a history of pirates and other shady characters shanghaiing men and boys. The Pirate House restaurant here is one of the oldest buildings in town.

There was a tunnel that led from the basement to the river (part of it is still there). Men would get liquored up and find themselves on board a ship.

Robert Louis Stevenson lived in a building across the street, and hung out there when it was a tavern. He wrote "Treasure Island" while here, and based Billy Bones on a pirate who lived above the tavern.

81 The War of Jenkins' Ear included a 4000-man force of colonial troops, first time the Brits deployed one outside the home colony. Virginians in this case. Yellow fever killed more of them than the Spaniards.

Eventually the survivors returned home. The commander of the Virginians remained fond of Admiral Vernon, who led the British efforts, to the point of naming his newly built home after him.

The commander was Lawrence Washington, older half-brother of George. The home was Mount Vernon.

My kid goes to a charter school. Kids from different counties attend, and there is real economic and racial diversity.
It works because a) the school will and does expel students who behave badly and b) no teachers union and they do fire teaches.
The school only wants serious students and hard-working teachers.

The only way vouchers will work is if they also allow those two reforms. Otherwise they'll just be moving the problem around.
It would work for private schools.

Spain suffered from Muslim rule and had a lot of the leftover influences of it. So you see a lot of a thin upper class with everyone else at the bottom. Not much of a middle class and to much of the Allah Will's It mentality towards things. It served them well as conquerors in the New World but it left them perpetually lagging in Europe. Once they lost their income stream from the New World, they faded away.

197 This song seems appropriate for this thread:

The Dark and the Rolling Sea
Al Stewart

Oh you slipped away from the harbour side
In the morning bright and clear
And your sails were filled with the rising wind
And you laughed for all to hear
But you never glanced at the ragged dance
Of your lovers on the quay
Don't call on them when the winds rise high
On the dark and the rolling sea

Oh you set your course for the furthest shores
And you never once looked back
And the flag you flew was a pirate cross
On a field of velvet black
And those landsmen who you but lately knew
Were left stranded on the lea
Don't call on them when the storm clouds rise
On the dark and the rolling sea

Oh I have no need of a chart or creed
You told your waiting crew
For the winds of chance, they will bear us straight
And you spoke as though you knew
So you paid no mind to the warning signs
As you gave your words so free
Don't change your tack when the timbers crack
On the dark and the rolling sea

Now the thunder rails in the great mainsails
And the stars desert the skies
And the rigging strains as the hands of rain
Reach down to wash your eyes
And your oarsmen stands with his knife in hand
And his eyes spell mutiny
Don't call my name when your ship goes down
On the dark and the rolling sea.

China had iron casting and bronze casting since forever, and they invented gunpowder.
They bought the cannon from the Dominicans and Jesuits who set up foundries at Kowloon.
The Cannon would have been very useful but the army was staffed by peons in situations very similar to slavery, and the officers were chosen often by their ability to pass a civil service exam that included poetry, and interest from the imperial court.
They saw no need to change, and in fact, choosing to build and use cannon would change their society - they preferred to lose, honorably, instead of changing fundamentally to meet new situations on the ground.

Unfortunately for them, they got their wish

There is an odd aside, that at one point the Jesuits and the Dominicans got into an artillery duel in Kowloon.

"Can you assist her in programming the DVR? You know how much she enjoys her stories"

"Don't forget to make her iced tea! And she needs to be driven to her friend's at 4:00 pm."

Then the screen shows that these are members of Hillary's staff chatting, not concerned caretakers. Tagline: "We need a president who can take that 3:00am call. Unassisted."

Speaking of Spain. It was apparently a Spanish merchant captain trying to over-awe a Japanese baron that lead to the self-isolation of Japan. His cargo had been seized and he wanted to show the baron how powerful the Spanish empire was, so showed a map of the world and how much Spain ruled. When asked how had Philip II managed to rule so much, the captain mentioned Spain would send missionaries and priests to a country. When sufficient people had been converted, soldiers would be landed and the government changed. So this was reported Hideoyoshi, fearing for his rule had all the foreigners, nanban-jin, expelled.

So why did Spanish army dominated Europe for over 100 years? They had a huge middle class but endless wars did them in. They have no Islamic influence. In fact France, England and Holland were allies of the Muslim Turks.

Nearly all, if not all of the "mass shootings" over the last several years that were not objectively terror, involved people who were on some sort of psychotropic medication. And over the past many years, these drugs have been famously over-prescribed.

If our leftist well-wishers for a utopian society were serious about protecting members of that society, they'd call for some serious scrutiny of doctors prescribing these drugs, and not focus like a laser on curtailing freedoms.

336 More than 2,800 people remain in shelters a week after the devastating flooding that wrecked homes across south Louisiana.

The Department of Children and Family Services announced the latest figure Monday.

The storm and its flooding have damaged an estimated 60,000 homes and forced thousands to seek temporary housing with relatives, friends or shelters.

More than 106,000 people have registered for federal disaster aid, with the state saying $20 million has been distributed to individuals so far.

At least 40 state highways remained closed.

371 What the crap, Daily Mail??? From an article about Clint's Eastwood's son Scott:

"Scott is the nepotistically-privileged son of four-time Oscar winner Clint Eastwood"

Doesn't that apply to practically everyone in Hollywood? Why single out Clint's son? Wondering if the jab is because Clint has made jabs at Hillbeest.

The article also says Clint beat him, but then later reveals it occurred after Scott left his 14 year old sister at a party and went for beer with his friends. We didn't do physical punishment in my house, but um, yeah, leaving a 14 year old to the pedo sharks that swim around California? Don't blame Clint one bit.

Even when I miss them, I don't miss them.

Reminds me of the story PJ O'Rourke tells, about an area of Mexico, through which they were traveling on one of their vehicle rally tours. The locals had either their own language, or at least some regional dialect that was slightly different.

Being a bit of a tourist area, there were often westerners who would sort of condescend to the locals, and the kids would approach the ladies saying "miss, miss." The ladies would be flattered, and would sometimes give money or treats to the kids, who would run away, laughing.

Turns out the word "miss" in English, was NOT the same meaning as the word "mis" in the local dialect, which was a rather vulgar reference to female body parts.

Inside joke the locals understood, and the westerners would be completely clueless about.

388 This area hasn't had a major hurricane in over a hundred years. We are well-covered with flood insurance, living on an island. Our home has a raised foundation (about 5-6 ft.), but in a Cat 2 hurricane at high tide, we'd be under 20' of water. I keep telling husband when he sells his business and retires, I want to move to the SC or GA foothills. It's lovely here, but I can't take the stress of hurricane season every summer.Posted by: Jane D'oh

You know Jane... when you see that couple hundred mile wide hurricane clouds, the *only* area that is going to have that level of storm surge is *maybe* a ten or fifteen mile wide area - in a Cat 4. On a long enough timeline, like 500 years, every area could eventually get hit. But on a year to year basis, your odds are extremely, extremely low.

446 Why couldn't Spain do that with the same resources? Some lack in the Human Capital side of the equation? My understanding is that they didn't have a very large middle class. Did thar mean fewer skilled craftsmen and less capital for investment?

Posted by: Polliwog the 'Ette at August 23, 2016 10:25 AM (GDulk)

I read extensively about the life and times of Diego Valesquez, the great Spanish painter, arguably one of the greatest painters of all time. One of the truths that emerged from that research was that Spanish gentlemen didn't work. No, seriously: the culture was such that the brightest and best of Spanish manhood was taught to believe that industry and trades were anathema to the noble ideal. To get one's hands dirty, literally or figuratively, was considered ungentlemanly, ignoble.

So yeah, you're right: there was a lack in the human capital side of the equation.

You jest, but true story: I have a friend who had 5 kids, then after a long gap (maybe 5 or 6 years) had a 6th child. And of course when they would see people they hadn't seen for a long time they would say yes, this is number 6.

She hadn't realized how much the kid picked up on this until one day when he was a toddler, someone asked him what his name was, and yes, he said, "I'm number 6."

Trump had the opportunity to disavow David Duke and all the rest when Duke gave Trump his endorsement but he (Trump) didn't do it. Instead, Trump claimed ignorance of who and what Dukeis and expressed confusion about the whole controversy--I think becauseTrump was hoping the wholestinking mess of neo-Nazi endorsementswould blow over quickly. It didn't.
I'm not sayingTrumpis a bigot or okay with these slimeballs. One of the reasons Trump left the Reform Party back in the day is because David Duke and other Klan types were hoping to hijack the Reform Party brand for their own purposes.
