Divisive Political Season Causing Mass Unfriending on FaceBook
Well, this is obvious. I've unfollowed or even blocked people I used to consider allies, and I've gotten the same. Even the blog's roster has been hit by this incredible divisive season.
That's really a sad thing.Some friends don't let friends talk politics anymore on Facebook. Others are on "unfriending" sprees...One big downside of social media is that it's a very brief medium -- and while brevity may be the soul of wit, brevity is in an argument is just basically "You're wrong, I don't like you." Twitter is 140 characters and while I don't think there's a particular limit on the length of a FaceBook post, the medium seems to encourage brevity. When you drain out the nuance and factual presentation of an argument -- that is, you take the essay out of an essay -- what are you left with? You're left with an unsupported assertion and a disparagment of anyone disagreeing with it. I blocked a fella a few weeks back. Whatever I said on Twitter, he contradicted. He did not argue against what I said; he just said I was wrong. Just a pure contradiction, no reasoning or justification provided. When I told him I was going to block him if he kept this mechanical, thoughtless algorithm up -- if he was going to just keep saying "Nuh-uh" to anything I said -- he instructed me that I just couldn't take it that he was "refuting" me. Refuting? "Nuh-uh" isn't a refutation. It's not even an adult word. I've mentioned Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neal Postman a lot. It's very relevant to our age. He notes Marshall MacLuhan's aphorism about TV -- "The medium is the message" -- and explores it. Every medium has a certain type of message it's good at delivering, and other types of messages it's not good at delivering. Thus, every medium has an implicit bias towards certain styles of messaging -- the medium itself has embedded within it a "message" about what types of messages are important. In the TV age, we moved away from consuming written reports and written analyses -- essays and such -- in favor of moving pictures and stories structured like a Hollywood mini-feature, stories with an Emotional Arc and of course clear Heroes and Villains. The internet age has brought us a medium with a bias towards even more gutteral, visceral messaging. Social media encourage short, punchy messages, and by punchy, I mean people are trying to punch each other with words. The medium has a bias towards stridency and absolutism, because you really can't include too much nuance and caveat in 140 characters. It also has a strong bias towards anger, because, as far as short missives go, "Go fuck yourself" has the virtue of being brief, direct, and very easy to write. Much easier to write a bunch of fuck yous to strangers than compose an article explaining your beliefs or the defects of the claims of those you disagree with. And a lazy medium thereby encourages lazy thinking. I kind of think anything important one has to say should be said in person. If you're going to break up with someone, it should be in person. If you're going to tell someone you'll never speak to him again because he supports a candidate you don't like, you should probably man up to deliver that message in person, too. If you have the guts. But that's hard. Much easier just to rip someone in a 140 character Sick Burn.

"They range from pretty harsh, graphically laced, attacks upon people ... to statements of 'if you support this person, you can no longer be my friend.'" Talan says the popularity and ease of use on Facebook combined with two candidates with remarkably high negative ratings among voters fuel "very visceral" debates that go to people's strong personal values and identity.

I would probably not decide to be or not be friends with someone based on political views unless they were really extreme. I have a few, not many relatives that are liberal, fortunately most of us are conservative. But I love them and would never unfriend someone because of that. Sometimes politics among friends is better left unspoken. I might think less of someone I suppose but friends and family are too rare. If it's just some acquaintance, well maybe.

Yesterday was at a family event.
My elderly father, who is a raving leftie lunatic to this day, started ranting about Trump and praising Bernie Sanders and demanding to know everyone's opinion.
As has been my practice for at least a decade, when that happens I manage to absent myself from the room ("Gotta use the bathroom!") until his rant subsides. But this time, for the first time, a close relative visiting from out of town ALSO surreptitiously left the room, and in a conspiratorial tone said to me in the garage, "I had to leave -- he brought up politics again! It's unbearable!"
I could have SWORE that she was a moonbat like everyone else in my family. But encountering her in the escape-from-politics zone was quite an eye-opener! Maybe theres another secret non-leftist in my family. It was too much of a risk to ask her bluntly, so I may never know.

Jefferson and Adams were best friends, even though each was sure the other held views (and was in a position to put those views into action) that would do serious damage to the young nation.
why would you be friends with someone that demands that illegal invaders be treated better than you are, that you pay for that via higher taxes, and calls you a racist when you question that?

I think a lot of these people were never friends to begin with. They are acquaintances, at best. I may thoroughly enjoy a person when we spend a limited amount of time together enjoying a common interest. Facebook's business model encourages us to announce our acquaintanceship publicly, with now-hilarious consequences.

Update from the Obozocare front: I had an eye doctor appointment (I need cataract surgery) and the doctor was complaining about Obozocare. She had a patient who suffered a corneal abrasion when a duck she was transporting in her car pecked her in the eye. Twitter is the place to be for up-to-the-minute political news. Found out news usually the day before it appeared in print. It's fantastic. You can also find links to videos from different news sources - Lou Dobbs, Judge Jeanine, etc. So much easier and faster than digging online individually for the clips. Speaking of ad blockers. I just ordered ATT cable and internet. Time Warner has had it. The woman wanted to make sure I knew that ATT inserted ads over their network, I ask her if ad block would block them and she seems to say it would, BUT I was not impressed with her answer.

His supervisor (a black man) didn't say anything to him; either did my supervisor, who is another black man. However, if one of the non-black crew does that, they are on your ass like sweat on a pig.
Could I complain? Nope. I'll be seen as "racist." Did I complain? No. It's a waste of breath. Nothing will be done.
Also... it's a long walk to the parking lot, and things could happen. And honestly, I work with a lot of millennial cowards who would look the other way if they saw something violent happen.

Just maybe an hour ago I caught a glimpse at FOX, not that it was the topic of discussion, but they showed video clip after video clip of Hillary Clinton gingerly stepping down the stairs of her plane (on the right side of the screen above the talking heads).
For all I know those clips dated back to her First Lady days. They certainly were not in the last year or so because the Clinton Camp won't allow outsiders to witness how they get her onto the plane anymore.
But the message was sent, despite rumors to the contrary, Hillary is a spry near septuagenarian. Without saying a word.
TV is a hell of a propaganda machine.

The problem is that politics is no longer a argument on point of view. One group is specifically trying to take from another. When you disagree with the takers you get called an awful person, racist etc. Others just regurgitate comebacks they learn from a political comedy program. If anything this election cycle has helped everyone realize who they should not have in their lives.

Politics alone aren't enough to cause me to unfriend someone, but they do occasionally make me reevaluate the relationship. Do I have quite a few other things in common with them? If so, they get to stay on board. But if I only have one or two things in common with them, and those aren't enough to outweigh the political negative, away they go.

Another of the harmful effects of TV is that everything gets turned into entertainment, which means it has to have drama. But real life usually is best without a lot of drama. The need for drama also means that processes are edited out, which leads to distorted perceptions on how difficult or long a task may take
Consider the so called 72 hour makeover shows on reality TV. You never see any measuring. The local home improvement store also has everything they need on hand. So the exact amounts needed appear on time, every time. I get a particular kick out of the restaurant remodels in which they never show the walls being scrubbed down and sanded to remove grease before they can be repainted. Or the floor finishes that seem to instantly dry,

Yeah, this has been an issue with me. Two things set me off:
1. Out and out smears and lying.
2. Bigotry, particularly towards me.

In addition to Social Media, the internet has also brought us our personal, portable libraries in the form of IPads, Surfaces, Smart Phones and such. Every assertion can now be immediately fact checked, and so there!
It kills conversation, discussion, debate, and argument. In the past (25 years ago) a social group could find themselves discussing something of which there was familiarity but not expertise. A conversation would ensue as various points and aspects were brought forth and debated. Shadings and nuances were developed, and it often became a very wide-ranging discussion. And everybody learned something through it. In addition to aspects of the original topic, they also learned things about each other.
Carting these portable 'know-it-all' devices around leads to an immediate fact-check on some statement, and the discussion is ended. Indeed, social media is anything but!

I stopped going to Facebook four years ago, when some pro-gay-marriage psycho tried to go into the Family Research Center and kill everyone there, and leave Chik-fil-A sandwiches on their corpses.
A lot of liberal acquaintances who I'd previously considered friends said, basically, "Yeah, I'm totes glad nobody was actually hurt and stuff, but really, these horrible extremists are inviting such violence unto them with their hateful rhetoric. If they just held the 'right' opinions, this wouldn't have happened in the first place."
That's when I realized they would've been fine with, say, me being murdered for not adhering 100% to their views of what a "proper" citizen should believe.
I never logged in again after that.

Several (10? 12?) years back I had a friend of a friend shoot me an e-mail sign-up for a "don't buy gas on 'this day' event" to really SHOW the oil companies... something.
I don't recall much of the e-mail; except it was claiming this would somehow do something of value... because gasoline apparently expires in under a day and requires dumping once it's gone stale or sour or whatever they think gasoline does if they don't buy it on any given Tuesday...
Note this wasn't promoting not buying gas, just not buying on some specific day.
I told them this was stupid, pointless, and couldn't possibly be of any value to anyone or any movement because gasoline isn't stored in less than 1 day quantities at stations; and doesn't go bad. And they're going to use the same gasoline; so the numbers would average out in a day, three days tops.
On the plus side, I never got e-mails from them again.

A member of my writing critique group, a founding member no less, has decided to take a "sabbatical" until after the election. She's a Clintonista (has said Granny Cankles is "competent," fer cryin' out loud), and I guess doesn't want to get into arguments with me, the Trumper, or the other guy who's a Bernie-bot. Better to "take a break" than to wrangle with us each week and get nothing done.

What to do depends on goals and desires. My goal is to explore what I really think. If someone's words make me angry then the important part is to understand what is making me fearful. Everything is a personal experience and it is impossible to change a typical person's opinion when their lively hood or identity depends on not changing that opinion. Contrast to a sociopath or narcissistic person changes to whatever they see as benefiting them and sees no contradiction. In one sense changing-opinion-depending-on-current-trends is the lively hood of a sociopath or narcissistic person. eg politician or community organizer.

For arguments sake, accept the Ancient Alien theory (TV show). Tie it with Arthur C Clarke's (who I read was a pedophile in his private life, don't know but I did think it strange Clarke moved to Sri Lanka) book Childhoods End.

Yeah. I've lost bloggers, the first was some woman who supported Fioroni. Then another blog that just would not quit with Trump. He can't, he won't, he shouldn't, I'll never... I was wondering about some *cough* other sites, but they pulled their heads out. Like Trump? No need. But after pushing then pulling for McCain, Romney, even the Bushs, there is no room to complain. I don't even care if you... well... actually I do. Many wanted us all in for the wankers. Payback and all.
There are still some that are on the fence and may yet be booted. Though I have noticed they have toned down a LOT. I think they are realizing that it isn't just a few of us yahoos. It's most of us yahoos! And... I'm not even necessarily one of them, just an accountant who expects if someone wants rules one way, then they should play by them when it goes the other way.
I will dump on any who pushed and is now balking, against specific party nominees... personally, privately, publicly. I don't seem to be, at all, alone. The party is being reclarified, if I am not sure, unless massive repatriations, the wall, and airport changes, are made and massively, harshly, powerfully, it will matter. If just those who have gotten in illegally, or in truth allowed illegally (through anchor babies, a fraud of a notion), then it simply doesn't matter. America will no longer be American, but some foreign and minority run shithole, like every other nation on the globe at this time.

I admin a decently large (just north of 7000) sci-fi group on FB and we've made it policy for the last couple of years to ban any and all political discussions that don't specifically involve works in the genre. That, of course, means a lot of talk about post-scarcity in Star Trek and The Culture, but you also get a lot of great future-monarchy discussions.
On the other side, even sci-fi-themed memes about current politics, American or worldwide, get nuked. Articles about identity politics, usually about the racial/gender makeup of authors/actors/etc get nuked. My rationale is that there are a bajillion places on line to go arblegarble about that kind of crap. While hard science articles are welcomed, anything about AGW, pro or against, gets nuked. We want an island of semi-sanity to get our nerd on.
For the most part, it works.
