9 2nd link. Gross injustice. Who is the government to decide if one's expression of their religious beliefs is "important" enough to be exercised? Shame on the cowardly PC Marines who decided this was a battle to be fought. Stick to your mission, not to the destruction of the 1st Amendment. I hope she wins on appeal.

This isn't the first time the military has tried to squash religious expression. Some do fight back. I know a Puerto Rican Catholic priest who tore up orders to curtail his preaching and watch what he said in Mass. He tore the papers up. During Mass.

15 There's a lot more to the story of that Marine Sterling than just bible verses. She was a shitbag who on multiple occasions disobeyed lawful orders.

She also admitted that when she was told to take down the verse she had posted she did not tell anyone it was a bible verse. She didn't have the book and chapter on it so that anyone who saw it would know where it was from.

In the end, she was a fuckup who got what she deserved.

24 So - a Sikh soldier is allowed to keep his turban and beard but a Christian Marine can't have a few scraps of paper with Bible verses on them at her desk. Why, you'd almost think the powers that be have a special hatred for Christianity or something.

(To his credit, the Sikh signed the petition defending the Christian Marine)

I'm looking at two canvas art pieces on my wall right now that each have a Bible verse on them, each without Scripture references. Do not see the significance of Chapter and Verse citations necessary in order to be proven as Biblical expressions of faith.

But it has always been that people serving in the military have "restricted constitutional rights". That is why they fall under the UCMJ instead of normal law.

44 Listening to the liberals this morning on cable news...

They're pretty upset we're going to waste the time and money to have an election in November, considering the polls show Hillary is sure to win.

When you think of it, the last few polls are all they have.

What Trump has going for him is:

1) It's a change election.
2) The same polls show the country is on the wrong track.
3) Historically, after a two term election the people vote for the opposite party.
4) Trump raised 80 million in small donations that can be tapped again and again.
5) Enthusiasm at rallies for Trump - none for Hillary.
6) He's in a surprisingly good position in the polls considering he hasn't spent any money on ads yet.
7) He has the ability to saturate the media with ads in the final weeks.
He can make a surprise appeal to blacks/Hispanics.
9) There is a high probability of blockbuster negative news about Hillary - emails, Clinton Foundation, etc.
10) High probability of some sort of terror attack here or abroad.

Trying to be objective, I think I would rather be Trump right now instead of Hillary.

50 Yes, it appears that Palo Alto has another CA overheated housing boom waiting for yet another collapse.

The last time I checked the small houses on postage stamp lots in the Castro Valley, CA neighborhood where I used to live were going for $500K. These are 500 SQFT houses on lots less than 1/2 acre. They were built in the 50s but still had lots so small you could pee out your bedroom window and hit the house next door.

This latest "Obama/Hillary founded ISIS" thing is brilliant.

All the media argument yesterday was that no, even though they are responsible for creating ISIS by pulling out all the troops, they technically didn't "found" ISIS.

So the public, as stupid as they are, are either believing Obama and Hillary founded ISIS or were at least responsible for creating it. No downside for Trump.

You might want to offer a set amount for certain period to help him stay independent somewhere else. At 20, he's probably learned from the first experience and quite possibly could make it on the second try.

95 I hope you are right, jwest, I really, really do. However, I'm tired of hearing crowd size touted as a reason Trump will win.

Palin drew big crowds too. The Dems know their voters don't have to be excited about Hil - they only have to be so afraid of Trump they'll turn out for Scankles. An unenthusiastic vote for Hill counts just as much as a passionate vote for Trump. (Of course, any Dem vote counts 5 or 10 times more than any vote for the GOP, especially in the environs of Philadelphia.)

Hence their hysterical fear mongering.

What I'm hoping is that a large segment of the generally non-voting population will turn out to vote for Trump.

Posted by: Bigbys Olive Fingers at August 12, 2016 08:28 AM (0o/oP)

105 Over the last 5 years Ive seen dozens of my friends leave Palo Alto and often leave the Bay Area entirely. Ive seen friends from other states get job offers here and then turn them down when they started to look at the price of housing.

Gotta say, around the same time I took the job in Ohio, I got a chance to interview for a dream job in San Diego. After living near DC for 12 years, I figured housing costs there would be bad, but within the range of bad I was used to.

Aw, hell no. The price of a decent house in the DC suburbs would barely pay for a shithole in southern California.

So, I moved to Ohio and bought a 4,000 SF 100 year old church with hardwood floors and yuge stained glass windows for $200K.

There are numerous health properties of ACV (the Braggs kind), as well as lemon. I've used both in my drinking water. You can add a bit of honey to make it more palatible. Also, ACV mixed with a small amount of water is one of the best home remedies for bad coughs I've ever had.

I don't know if you've been following ace's health threads, but there have been recommendations for apple cider vinegar there. Also, it's something I've seen for years being touted as beneficial.

Most people use it for losing weight. This doctor said yes, it's good for that, because what it does is balance your body's pH. And - this is what really made me want to try it - he says when that happens, it can relieve the stiffness and soreness from arthritis. I have it in my knees and I hate it, so I'm willing to try this blasted concoction.

All of these geniuses suffer from what I like to call "The Wile E. Coyote Vietnam Victory Plan".

In short, they think that they can titrate victory by calibrating ju-u-u-u-ust the right incentives versus disincentives over a huge group of people who may or may not share their same values and thinking.

Which, of course, completely ignores 5000 years of recorded human history.

i know JJ loves him some Mark Levin but right now he's one of the prime geniuses using the WECVVP.

I tune in for a bit yesterday and every single talking point he was using against Trump could've come straight of NPR or CNN or MSNBC-

230 #219 gave me severe 2012 deja vu.

The polls are rigged. Romney's got this.

If Obama wins a second term, IT'S OVER.

Sorry, but yelling at me to "get on the Trump Train" isn't persuasive. And it's not up to me. It really isn't. My one vote won't decide this election.

To win this election, Trump has to convince millions of people that he is a better choice than Hillary. That's his job.

If he sucks at that job, there's nothing I can do about it.

So stop yelling, it's not effectual.

231 Charles Cooke was on Red Eye last night. He generally has some insight but always seems to twist the knife a little on Trump.

He said Trump has made race relations worse. It seems clear that just because the race card is played constantly as a non-argument against border control and America First, it doesn't mean Trump is the cause.

Hillary said America has to put themselves in the shoes of minorities that face "systemic racism". Demanding non-minorities (whites) are all racist while minorities are all victims is what makes racism worse.

Refusing to admit to "white privilege" does not make it worse. Hanging innocent cops in Baltimore would not make race relations better ... it would only make it worse, for civilized America.

I said Levine lost his mind months ago. I don't usually listen to him because his accent, like Savage's, grates on my ears, but I didn't used to object to his content and would listen in the car if it was that time of day. Then one day he was in full rant about this whole mess and I could tell he'd lost it.

You can't 'downballot' only, that's idiocy. The REASON that we win midterms and not downballot in the midterms is that the lower the info voter the less likely they are to turn out for any election that isn't president. To counteract that on the lefty-stupid side, you have to not denigrate the top of the ticket.

In Virginia, the democrats financed and ran a fake libertarian, Tom Sarvis. He drew off enough votes in TWO elections, governor and senator so that the Clinton mchine/left won. Pushing third party esp the stupid fake libertarian nuts who run is a disaster for the right. What happened down ticket? The left swept because that's who turned out after the top of the ticket was trashed. They had to do a recount for Attorney General it was so close with the lefty of course winning. Day One, he gave illegals in-state tuition.

241 What the Clinton gang is getting away with; what the Obama administration is doing to aid and abet the Clinton gang in what they are getting away with; what the media is doing in providing cover for the Clinton gang;

IS IN YOUR, MY, OUR, FACES

They are rubbing our faces in it, at this point. They are communicating to us that we will comply and that there is not one damned thing that we can do to prevent it.

I guess we could call this a Mexican-American standoff.

Not only are they rubbing our faces in this for what they are going to do to us - while we are standing her watching - but they are telegraphing to us that if this is what they are going to do to us in our face before the election, they are giving us fare warning of what they intend to do to us after Hillary is installed.

Nice touch. Wouldn't you agree?

I wandered over once and only once and they had 8 comments on a story that would have garnered 2000 because they had to throw-in with Zuckerberg. Just that move shows their race to the left.

Their managing editor is a complete effete little d-bag called Jason Lee Steorts. He is the one responsible for getting in a public battle with Mark Steyn over a very mild "fruit cordial" joke meant to illustrate how times had changed and Steyn leaving in a huff.

Looking back I think many of them, the writers, flipped over the gay marriage extravaganza thing, ie manhattan opinion trumped constitutional conservatism. Hillary's election is irrelevant to this particular issue. The media and academic elements of the culture are all firmly controlled by people who believe in the #BlackLivesMatter race narrative. Business will go along with it to avoid stirring the pot.

Few on the right are willing to make the intellectual case against the narrative --- Milo Yainnopolous is one of the few. The Republican Party is too cowardly to stand up to it. Donald Trump either doesn't get it or doesn't understand how to oppose the narrative.

Really, whether Hillary is elected or not, the #BlackLivesMatter narrative of racism in America isn't going to stop.

IF National Review (and any of the other self-important "conservative" publications) were worth one damned thing, then name me one policy issue they took the lead on and pushed through to realization.

The truth is, every single damned one of them is good for one worthless thing:

Talk.

Never action.

Never results.

Talk.

There is not one politician, not one policy that any of them can point to and say, "we birthed this, we pushed this and now it is success."

Then, look over at Kos--how much money have they raised for candidates and causes? You know: Action, not just words.

Donald Trump is playing a marketing game - political elections are about marketing. Like with that Hugh Hewitt interview where Trump concludes with they wouldn't be talking about your words, but they are talking about mine and Hewitt concedes the point.

The media wouldn't cover what Trump said if he was nice and bland; they cover the outrageous statements, hold them up, repeat them, wanting people to get outraged and angry like they are - and end up repeating Trump's message.

Will this work? God knows, but it is interesting to watch.

325 The whole "systemic racism" meme isn't about actual racism or about reparations, etc. It's merely about creating "guilt" so that the government can take steps to accomplish income/wealth redistribution, ie equaling or "communism." That has always been the case.

There were several studies done on global warming by Stanford and East Anglia. People were asked a series of questions and then they were given "carbon meters" for two months. At the end of the time period they were told that they were creating a far bigger carbon footprint than their peers. Some were even given colored bracelets and told that gave them a "carbon rank" and they were to wear them to show their level. THEN they were given the questions again. Guilt made them change their answers to the intial questions about what they were willing to sacrifice and do; ie vote for more regulations and PUBLIC accomodations to stem "global warming."

The "systemic racism" works the same way. Make people feel bad and they will not vote to give their own money away but they WILL vote to force everyone to redistribute wealth out of guilt.

It's just another way to move toward the communist model of complete "equality" of income.

Trump got some support from black ministers, he has a few black groups supporting him, I see a lot of you-tube or facebook rants, or reasoned support from blacks.

Maybe it is just because social media has exploded, but there seems to be more black support for Trump than others. BLM has made many blacks flee the extremism, and Obama does nothing but make Chicago killings worse.

But the media is working very hard to make Hillary a saint and Trump a racist. But can they really pull that off ... with such terrible person as Hillary? They have to snuff out any signs of the BLM hate dying down, using Soros funding I guess.

It's pretty clear, I think, that Clear Channel has put pressure on their
talent to jump on the band wagon or lose their jobs. Rush is probably
big enough that he doesn't care. The rest are just following orders and
that makes them no better than the treacherous politicians.

Posted by: Mr Macca Bean at August 12, 2016 09:31 AM (4ng05)

Clear Channel doesn't need to put pressure on anyone. The radio hosts are smart enough to see the trends in their ratings when they take particular positions. Levin is on the anti-Trump bandwagon now, but when he sees his ratings slipping in a couple of months, because he's not delivering what his customers want to hear, he will change his tune to all anti-Hillary all the time and ignoring Trump's faults, and then everyone will flock back to him.

This is rather the problem with political discourse nowadays, both on the left and the right. People want to be fed info that makes them stroke out in rage, so every issue is ZOMG'ed up into maximum rage-inducing hysteria, and the truth is left somewhere behind.

yeah, I think "The Naked Communist" and Critical Theory have been a commie/Soviet backed subversive plan going back to WW2 even (or long before?), that they manage to implement far better than "conservatives" managed to stop it.

Most of our forefathers fought the Nazis, never had slaves but maybe lost people in that war (and most came here after that), have done far more for blacks than any other nation does ...

But the narrative survives because the "commies" made their long march through the institutions while "we" middle people were busy working.

340 "But the narrative survives because the "commies" made their long march through the institutions while "we" middle people were busy working."

1930s literature and opinion is chock-a-block with the concept and assertions that blacks are ripe to be used for a communist revolution. "Commie" wasn't all that dirty a word then, the government and hollywood were full of them and so were the religious/political/literary/art scenes. Of course, that is still true, they just use different words.

The idea was that blacks had the most to gain from a communist revolution and that they could easily be convinced of their need to participate in the revolution. BLM, this "systemic racism" bit, fomenting racial unrest by the DoJ, on and on and on in every democrat policy provision all has the identical goals.

But somehow people are STILL blind to it.

343 Need to also tell Trump to stop talking about that he's okay with losing.
========
The Trump comment is being reported as:

"All I do is tell the truth," Trump responded, "and if at the end of 90 days, I've fallen short because I'm somewhat politically correct [sic--andyc], even though I'm supposed to be the smart one, and even though I'm supposed to have a lot of good ideas, it's OK. I go back to a very good way of life. It's not what I'm looking to do. I think we're going to have a victory, but we'll see."

BTW, the "truth" reference was to Obama founding ISIS and related criticisms that seemed to cover most of the interview from what I've read.

There's video that I haven't watched because I don't like watching e.g. 10 minutes of video when it would take 2 minutes to read a transcript of same if you want to look for yourself.

So I think I'll wait for a full transcript including all of the questions and his remarks before and after opining on whether he was either surrendering or is a ringer for Hillary.

To take the comment as it appears, first let's pretend we comprehend English and see that he's pretty clearly saying he will retire to private life (like Cincinnatus!) and not stick around in the political sphere (maybe hinting at Romney's actions and as Obama will definitely do in the future) and not that he's giving up (a view supported by the next two sentences).

And you can tell us how he should have responded to a question that I'm guessing was something like "What will you do if you do happen to lose?" because I'm pretty sure that if he had answered something like "But I'm not going to lose", he'd be accused of hubris etc.

Or if he said something like, "I'd fight on for the Little Guy", it probably would have been reported as "Trump Won't Accept Election Loss: Hints at coup attempt???" judging by the phoney b.s. over his 2nd Amendment answer the other day.

So get bent, Joe, especially as I don't recall any of the pro-Trump or EverTrump people saying they'd vote for Crooked Hillary the way you did even if you did say you'd changed your mind on that.

My Dad (that I barely ever knew) was way into Reinhold Niebuhr back in the 40's -50's, but I was given part of Niebuhr's name so feel I need to understand him a little. heh

Beck sorta denounced him as helping water down the church with social justice type crap. I haven't waded through it all yet, but I hear Niebuhr is used in theology schools even now.

"Moral Man and Immoral Society" 1932
... I read some. Wiki says "The thesis of the book is that people are likelier to sin as members of groups than as individuals."

This has sorta been my theme on religion, including the PC religion. Self Reliance should be more dominant than submission to the group. But man is social/tribal by nature, and so it goes. Submission to "white guilt" is easier than resisting ... "resist we much".

And I think staying with "Obama/Hillary founded ISIS" is one case where hyperbole works out well. It moved that Overton Window to debating just how responsible they were, with their MB connections, bad decisions. "let's have that debate"

348 I won't comment much till next year, but here's a few things that have become obvious.
1. Trump suckered his supporters. He doesn't care about anything they believe in. He's being outspent $50M to 0 on TV because he's going back to his comfortable lifestyle after shoving a hefty portion of donated dollars into his business empire for "campaign expenses" (including renting his own house, and a salary for himself). You can bet he's going to show a profit on this dumpster fire.
2. Trump was always going to lose badly, no matter what NeverTrumps did after his nomination. He had practically the worst general polling numbers ever, he was never rated better than a 2:1 longshot (now 5:1), and every day he says something that makes him unfit to be President. His billions in free MSM "look at the crazy Republican!" coverage may have won him the primary but now that same coverage is destroying him in the general, not least because it lets the media ignore everything awful Hillary is doing.
3. The GOP cannot be the party of Drudge and Hannity and Coulter. They will follow the MSM in promoting the "crazy Republican" because it means ratings and book sales for them. When large numbers of Republicans keep saying Trump is their strongest candidate in the same polls that have him at sky-high unfavorables, you have a serious information dissemination problem.
4. The GOP cannot allow this to happen ever again. The "establishment" may suck, but they don't suck as badly as the anti-Trump wave coming in November. The party needs a superdelegate system dominated by the Tea Party, the fetishization of democracy in the primary system leaves them too vulnerable to shameless opportunists.
