"Independent Conservative" To Announce Bid to... Throw Election to Hillary?

Gotta love this about the Establishment -- their timing is impeccable, like everything else they do. Just brilliant stuff, moving from victory to victory.

So now many of the ballots are now locked and thus a new candidate can't win a bunch of states, even in theory. Perfect time to finally man up.

The name is... underwhelming.

UPDATE: Word is it’s Evan Mcmullen, Chief Policy Director for the House Republican Conference.

He's also former CIA and Goldman Sachs. And the UN.

Well. I guess the Establishment really found their guy.

27 ballot deadlines have already passed -- by Friday, it will be 35.

More about this Electoral Juggernaut here.

Rick Wilson will be involved in his campaign because of course he will.

McMullen doesn't seem like a very good candidate -- but he is a Mormon. Leading AllahPundit to speculate: Is this just all about the Establishment trying to deliberately throw the election to Hillary, by draining enough Utah votes off from Trump to let Hillary take that crucial (and usually reliable) state?

His Electoral College analysis is that even assuming Trump wins the big states he needs to win (FL, OH, PA), he will lose the election to Hillary if Hillary takes Utah.

Is that what this is about? Some of our party simply defecting to the Democrat Party while still pretending to be Republicans?

Meanwhile, activists are calling upon the GOP to hold an emergency meeting to dump Trump as a candidate.

And of course the Establishment absolutely refuses any self-examination whatsoever. They absolutely refuse to ask the key, if painful, question: How were we so easily beaten by a man with such serious and manifold flaws and inadequacies?

From what I’ve seen there has been zero reflection on the part of Republican leaders on how much the base’s views differ from theirs and what to do about it. The GOP is not at all refiguring its stands. The only signs of life I see are among young staffers on Capitol Hill, who understand their bosses’ stands have been rebuked and are quietly debating among themselves what policy paths will win the future.

Beyond that, anti-Trump Republicans treat his voters like immoral enablers of a malignant boob. Should Mr. Trump lose decisively in November they’ll lord it over everyone, say “I told you so,” and accept what they imagine will be forelock-tugging apologies. Then they will get to work burying not only Mr. Trump but his issues.

The party, I'm thinking, is roughly half college-educated and white collar, and half non-college educated and blue collar. The latter cohort is having a rougher time in this Winner Take All, Average Is Over new world than the former.

But the party seems pretty convinced that what the latter cohort really cares about is subsidies for Boeing's overseas sales, low taxes for the rich, open borders and driving down blue collar wages ever further.

Oh: And they're super-duper ga-ga about running the same idealist/fantasist, we-had-to-rebuild-the-village-to-destroy-it nation-building super-hawk neocon foreign policy that the rest of America loves so much too.

Whatever happens, you will not be able to get this crew to back off a single one of their very unpopular positions. They're very fond of pointing out that their intraparty rivals' policies are unpopular too -- but they never can bring themselves to admit their own policies are very unpopular.

15 I think trump will get plenty of Utah votes in Nov, however unenthusiastic they might be, but this will be red meat to some. Utahns in general seem really livid about it being Trump, they have not been settling down like they normally do, though there is a decent enough contingent excited for Trump. But the average GOP voter here is not excited for him.

If this McMullen guy (who I've never heard of before and I'm a Mormon, we usually know about everyone in positions of power from the tribe) runs, he will split the #nevertrump vote here between himself Gary Johnson.

Any attempt by GOP to circumvent the nominee that allows the Hildabeest to rule supreme over us all in Jan is evil and must be killed with fire.

20 Fuck these people, and fuck Rick Wilson. Seriously. Why would anyone here ever throw one moment of support to these assholes when they show nothing but contempt for their electorate? I'm done with them forever.

I honestly think it's time to bring back Let It Burn. It's going to burn anyway, so the least we can hope for is the destruction of the GOP.

Posted by: Wyatt Earp at August 08, 2016 12:11 PM (bc7LP)

21 I read Rick Wilson's screed this weekend in one of the NY papers, and he railed on how good it would be to crush the Trumpers who refused to acknowledge the wisdom gleaned from the 2012 Republican moratorium. That would be the same doc that came out in favor of blanket amnesty, because of course it did. At no point in his article did ever, and I mean not once, allow for the possibility that maybe some of the establishment's ideas were not acceptable or even very good.

Nope, it was all in on crushing the knuckle draggers once and for all and taking the party forward. Into irrelevancy to be certain.

The complete lack of self awareness and refusal to even allow for introspection are two reasons among many why I want to see the GOP burn to the ground and all of their brilliance discarded. Rick Wilson and Liz Mair are two of the architects of this persistent failure, yet there they are leading the charge against the one guy who beat so many of the polished establishment politicos. No, I'm not a Trump fan, but I do actually have my eyes open and can see what's happened. When your policies were rejected for the last two elections in favor of dyed in the wool communist, and the best thing you can do is put up guaranteed electoral losers like McCain and Romney (then yell at all of us to get in line), well I'm not too anxious to pull you out of that ditch you find yourself in.

I want to see these people crushed and banished from DC forever. I don't think that's too much to ask.

56 I'm NeverTrump, and I think this is a stupid idea.

You guys got your candidate. If we were ever going to settle this in a semi-amicable way, Trump was either going to have to win without us NeverTrumpers, or lose big enough without us that you couldn't make a reasonable argument our votes could have gotten him over the top.

So far most of NeverTrump has been comments on blogs and a few mouthy columnists and political geeks getting in the dying print media and on twitter and saying they won't vote for him. I just don't think that was ever going to move the needle on the larger voting population very much. While it remains to be seen, if this guy camps out in the few western states with large LDS populations, there's a chance he could impact the race, and suddenly the argument that NeverTrump could actually affect the race has some evidence behind it.

I think most Utah Mormons want to call it quits on both and do what their ancestors did, trudge away to non-US territory and do their own thing. Problem with that is there is nowhere to go...

second look at Utah seceding and actually forming the independent state of Deseret?

Even when the Mormon Pioneers were murdered/raped/pillaged and fled to Mexican territory to get some peace, when the country came a'calling asking them to contribute men to the Mexican American War, they did it. They sacrificed those men even though they were desperately needed on the trail, left their women and children trekking across the plains and formed the Utah Battalion and did their duty to their country. Even after they were exiles they did this.

This is nowhere near as dramatic a scenario as that, but let's hope Mormons again do their duty to their country, no matter how painful it might be, and help vote out the hildabeest in Nov.

Serious answer: There aren't enough conservatives to bother. Right now it's between the globalists and the nationalists, given the spectacular failure of "conservatives" to articulate a consistent vision and sell it as beneficial to most Americans. Conservatives need to do some soul-searching, hunker down, and either pray the whole shebang collapses in a manner favorable to them (yeah, good luck with that) or figure out how to embed themselves in things such that, should the day come, they can guide matters appropriately.

Me, I'm just trying to figure out how to salvage the West from the massive clusterfuck collapse it's being driven to by forces within (the Left) and without (Islam). If America gets its shit together enough to be part of it, great, if not, well, lookin' for a Plan B. (The options are not great.)

211 I commented on this phenomenon on the previous thread.

There was a good article at The Federalist about this.

http://tinyurl.com/z7kx94p

Basically, the gist of the article is, there are three factions among conservatives:

The Nationalists, who care most about border security and protectionism, and for whom immigration is the overriding issue

The
Grassroots, who care most about social issues, and who tend to be
either indifferent or pragmatic on the issue of immigration

The Establishment, who care most about low taxes and economic growth, and who openly advocate for more immigration

And immigration is just one of many issues for which one of the three factions holds a near-absolutist position, but the other faction(s) holds a near-absolutist position in the *opposite direction*.

So the National GOP was held together as an uneasy coalition among these three factions, but the last few years has seen that coalition evaporate. So there really isn't any National GOP party any more, only three warring factions.

Trump won the primary, despite his numerous flaws, because he was the only candidate representing the Nationalist Faction. The other two factions had multiple candidates splitting the vote.

Exactly, but many "free traders" are fine with these shitty deals we're getting.

Me? I'd like to see a change in our entire tax structure, like maybe cutting tax rates here on companies and individuals and swapping it with higher tariffs.

Somehow, for about the first 150 years, our federal government was almost completely funded by tariffs alone and no income tax.

There is a value to having a national consciousness, an esprit de corps that includes those inside and excludes those on the outside.

That extra payoff for those at the top of the economic scale thanks to a lack of protection, is coming out of the pockets of those at the bottom who never get a chance to get out of their situation b/c there's no way to compete against the poor in the 3rd world in wages/bennies.

336 The problem with protectionism is that it is designed to help a certain segment of society but the costs are born by all of society in the form of fewer jobs and higher prices.

And, ultimately, it ends up hurting the industry its supposed to protect, because the overall economy gets better with freer trade.

The answer to American jobs being lost or moving overseas is to cut back regulation, crush unions, and reduce costs overall for businesses here. If it costs too much to do business, no trade policy is going to fix that and subsidies are a waste.

342 Well, it's a stupid plan doomed to failure.
He can't even be on the ballot in more than maybe half the states.

But I don't see it making a difference.

Hillary solidly takes DE, IL, NY, WA, CA, VT, MA, RI, MD, DC, HI.
That's 3 + 20 + 29 + 12 + 55 + 3 + 11 + 4 + 10 + 3 + 4 = 154
I'd call CT, MN, NJ, OR, VA more solid than leaning.
7 + 10 + 14 + 7 + 13 = 51 Or net 205.
She takes CO, NM, PA, NH, and ME in all likelihood.
9 + 5 + 20 |+ 4 + 3 = 41 That puts her at 246.
WI + MI add 26 going to = 272.

It's a race to 270...
So Trump has to take one of those states back to even have a chance.
And I don't see the state on that list that Trump carries over Hillary.
WI or MI are probably his best chances; and they're longshots to be fair.
And this is assuming FL (29) goes his way; which is iffy at best.

So, losing UT or not?
It won't matter.

If Trump pullls off a big enough miracle to take NV, OH, FL (plus his leaners for 265) and then takes either WI or MI? Then he's not losing Utah.

If he doesn't take ALL of those; losing UT or not is just a question of:
"How big did Trump lose" not "Did Trump lose".

None of the candidates that Trump trumped would be doing as well as he is right now, if that were possible one of those 16 would be the current candidate.

All the original candidates I loved and wanted to be our next pres were the first out. That winnowed down to Cruz and Rubio for me. rubio killed himself with the amnesty crap and Trump wounded him with the little Marco bit.

I would gladly have voted for Cruz. But the MSM would have painted him as some sort of religious snake handler Christian what wants to take away abortion and all your freebies, and that would have been all you hear till election day. He does not have enough personality to fight back vs the MSM, no matter how brilliant and conservative he is. I think he would have lost vs the MSM narrative not Hillary herself.

Trump is the only candidate that can battle the media in equal terms. We will see if he has learned any lessons from this past week: as Ace has said in the past, he punched down vs. Khan. Punch up or equal with Hillary and keep doing that till election day, he might, MIGHT pull it off.

Do the grassroots really care most about social issues though? Did having Peter Theil at the RNC infuriate the grass roots?

And I don't actually believe St. Michael Brown and Pajama Boy were really going to go get a job, but that Jose and Maria stopped them. Or, for that matter, Bubba Bumfuck, unemployed but proudly waving the Confederate flag. I think he likes to sit at home, not work, and when called out on that, blame immigrants, because that's a lot easier than, I dunno, improving one's skill set, making oneself more valuable, getting off the couch, etc.

Posted by: The Governor at August 08, 2016 12:42 PM (Ib5sz)

You are remarkably clueless.

I am not worried about Pedro or Maria taking my job. I am worried about demographic changes which will make the Dem a permanent ruling party. It appears the GOPe doesn't care about that, not really, because they're fine playing second fiddle as long as they get their cheap labor and get to hang on to their phony-baloney jobs. And because they really are not opposed to the ever-growing welfare state - that's just horseshit for the Tea Party rubes.

378 May Ryan go down. It will wipe that smug look off his face like when he and his bottom Barky reach "agreement" on something.

The NeverTrumpers will probably put $.5 Billion for Lex Luther in Utah alone, relying on the traditional analysis. Nothing traditional, however, works this year with Trump and it will do no more than place them on a long, informal enemy list.

380 "I know its just trolling, but considering that last Reuters poll has
this within 2 points and a few weeks ago several polls had Trump leading
solidly, how on Earth can you write it off so confidently?"

It's not trolling. Trump has never been leading solidly. When the largest scandal of Hillary's career dropped on her head like a freaking anvil, and it was after the Republican Convention but before the Democrat one, Trump managed a very, very narrow lead.

That is disastrous. That was the perfect scenario for him. The PERFECT scenario. Something that will never actually happen on election day because both parties always get their convention. And he brought it up to a coin flip.

And now that the Democrat's had their convention, he's down by an average of seven percent again. Like he has been for most of this race.

But no, I'm sure the peerless political genius, Donald Trump, will turn it all around instead of messing things up even further.

Trump supporters voted for probably the single worst presidential nominee in history. And now we're going to lose to Hillary Fucking Clinton of all people.

383 "free trade" is a misnomer anyway, as all countries are mostly mercantilist, and there are always details in the individual deals. We have leaned toward "free trade" at our expense, obviously, given the huge deficits that indeed do matter.

"Protectionist" is what most countries do, it is just a matter of how they structure their deals. It protects only certain trades maybe, but is still smarter than putting those people out of work. The ideal that they will get even better jobs magically is just magical thinking.

And as others said, "free trade" with enemies means we build them up to kill us. How is that an ultimate good of free trade?

This link is a rebuttal to the overstated "comparative advantage" ability to solve all ills by dropping all trade barriers, even unilaterally.

384 Like a fungus, these self appointed arbitors of what is "principled" just refuse to go away. I didn't get the memo that they were in charge of determining what exactly is acceptable or "conservative."
I am an ex-democrat. The Democratic Party no longer represents me. I looked to the republicans but they didn't protect me from the democrats, they seemed to promote the same progressive democratic policies that the people don't want. The people want a voice and trump is it.
I don't care how or what you label trump or his policies. It doesn't matter. Didn't mitt Romney self label as a 'severe conservative?" It's laughable.
From my vantage point, if trump
Secures the border
Implements e-verify
Reforms the current visa system
Fixes the trade deals
Fixes the VA
Brings back law and order
And appoints conservative judges.......
You can label him anything you want, that's what I'm looking for and Hillary will do the opposite.

387 What I find odd is the motivations for these alternative conservative candidates. Trump's one position that is at odds with typical Republicans is trade, yet the establishment seems more concerned about Trump's lack of a neocon foreign policy.

Look, we tried in Iraq, and it didn't work. The culture over there is just too far gone. It's hopeless. Americans, and even most Republicans, simply want to be left alone by the Arab Muslim world and certainly aren't willing to spend money and lives fighting over there. Just quarantine the SOBs. Seems to be Trump's position, too. And this seems to be his biggest problem with much of the Establishment. It's weird.

Posted by: Maxwell at August 08, 2016 02:10 PM (n6tqt)

388 right scoggDog ... and he fought the chip dumping.

"Free Trade" could be called protectionist for the globalists. What has not been accounted for is all the debt we piled up, the new found military strength of our enemies, the profits that are held overseas, the tech stolen, currency manipulations, enslaved foreign workers, massive pollution abroad, etc.

Even if all the regulations and taxes in America were for the "greater good", they have a cost from which the globalists, multi-nationals are protected. But they sell freely back into our alleged little perfect world without cost for those "ideal world" burdens our elite lay on US.

"The
only hope now is to somehow get Trump to drop out and let Pence run in

Never going to happen. Trump has been obsessive and self- promotional about "winners" and "fighters", well, since forever, when he actually was married to someone named Ivana.

I think he is going to stubbornly do it his way, all the way through, and will likely double down if seriously challenged. The idea of the guy whose entire self image is based on the concepts of of Surviving At The Top, Never Give Up, Think Big and Kick Ass, ad infintum will not go quietly into the night.

392 In 2010-12, the GOP had a chance to invigorate and grow itself by welcoming the Tea Party into the "big tent," but they chose to make the tent smaller.

In 2016 they had a chance to solidify half of their base, the working class that had been abandoned by the Democrats at the national level, and maybe even grow that base by making it attractive to more refugees from the Democrats. Instead, they chose to insult and reject those people knocking at teh door to come in.

The GOP as now constituted deserves to die, and it will. The husk will remain because in many States there is a vast preference for 2 parties to get on the ballot, but in 2018 and maybe 2020 the GOP will be a minor party--bigger than the Libertarians but definitely second tier.

By 2022 or 2024 it may have started to reconstitute itself as a largely new entity, keeping the name and ballot access, but otherwise barely identifiable as the party it was in 2012.

And conservatism as we have known it will be dead, dead, dead, the Democrats will have killed it off, along with a good part of our constitution.

394 Ace, it might be time to take a breath and wonder if, now that it's apparently risen to the point it deserves actual capitalization, "The Establishment" might serve the same psychological role as "The Illuminati".

There's a lot to dislike about politics qua politics, and one has to be careful (and I mean that - the mind can be insidious) to avoid fabricating a mythological entity for the purpose of projecting onto it that which is objectionable. It's the kind of (at best) loose thinking that lead to movements like Occupy Wall Street, Bern Victimization, and of course Trumpism.

There are career politicians, but more and more, when I hear "The Establishment" I just hear noise.

News Flash: Absolutely NO ONE outside of the GOPe's donor class wanted President Jeb Bush. He would have lost in a landslide, as Trump probably will. 397 336 The problem with protectionism is that it is designed to help a certain segment of society but the costs are born by all of society in the form of fewer jobs and higher prices.

And, ultimately, it ends up hurting the industry its supposed to protect, because the overall economy gets better with freer trade.

The answer to American jobs being lost or moving overseas is to cut back regulation, crush unions, and reduce costs overall for businesses here. If it costs too much to do business, no trade policy is going to fix that and subsidies are a waste.

yes.

If we think our regs, taxes, society are for the good, why buy products that are cheaper because they break most of those principles?

In time that simply replaces our ideals with those we tax ourselves against. That concept that we are so much better that we can still out-compete them was flawed and is proven wrong.

We found plenty of globalists that will sell us out and profit off the abusive standards of the third world, thereby prolonging and growing them, as our little attempt at nirvana whithers.

(sure though, many regs/taxes could be reduced and are there for bureaucratic Marxist control and illicit revenue "rent seekers")

Posted by: illiniwek at August 08, 2016 02:58 PM (l6e0e)

402 ace,

I thought I'd let you in on 'a dirty little secret' (as Rush might say).

If you REALLY want to chase off us Trump supporters from your website, all you have to do is regularly post how hopeless you think his candidacy is.

Point out the worst poll for Trump. Give your most 'incisive' analyses of how he is fundamentally doomed.
It's one thing to do such shit only several (say, five) weeks before voting day (if and only iff Trump happens to be down by 5+ points ON AVERAGE in the polls). In that case, we wouldn't specifically associate your website with undue pessimism and go elsewhere with our internet browsing time. Because the OBVIOUS bad fate would be everywhere.
But this early on - when the nasty Hilldabeast is still oh so clearly beatable - all you have to do is push the inappropriate meme that Trump is all but doomed. - Especially if you use polls and other statistics to back up such shit.
Then we will gladly move on and spend our time in other parts of the internet. (Like Instapundit which in general is far less focused in its approach to material than your website is.)

You may have absolutely no idea how unappealing it is for serious Trump supporters to click on your page only to read that there is virtually no chance that he will beat Hillary.
We would much rather go elsewhere. - And not just in terms of commenting. We don't want to read despairing ___SPECU-FUCKING-LATIONS___ on how the general election is already lost several months before election day.

Just say'n.
You really want us gone?
No problem.

Just push that shit. Over and over again.
We'll leave.

And when this election is over (WHATEVER THE RESULT), most of us will never come back. - As well will remember that you were secretly/subconciously cheering for Trump to lose. (Or - as you might put it - for the wicked Hillary to win.)
- Other excellent content be damned.

1. If you make 50k and pay even 5k on taxes that all comes of the top. After housinge and food cost where they are competing with a very large and growing # of welfare recipients really inflating prices at The bottom. E.g. ketchup you may shop one way but someone on ebt if they live with parents evpecially doesnt care If it's on saleor name brand.

2. If skankles is looking at combined state, fed, city, county, sales and income plus bigger prices from higher taxes when purchases.

It's sad to see it land here and particularly jarring to see people implicitly endorsing Obama's knee-jerk pessimism and broad contempt for maintaining unfettered access to the global commons (do you really think Iraq was only about "nation-building?" Come off it).

An engaged, leaning-to-interventionist United States has been more successful in the world, and generally a better guarantor of regional and global security, than a retrenched and diffident one.

Bush learned that lesson the hard way. Obama threw it out and nominated his short bus driver to shape relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Trump is going to lose this election due to Trump, and Trump ALONE! Almost every day Trump engages in an unforced error that convinces increasing numbers of people that he is simply unfit for office. His conspiracy theories, mean girl tweets, and social media flare ups over any perceived slights simply make him an unpalatable option for far too many people. Those actions are the fault of Trump, no one else.

You can rail all you want about the evil establishment and how the GOP should just die, but at the end of the day Trump will lose because he keeps saying and doing STUPID SHIT! The fact is the Libertarian ticket wouldn't be polling as high they are, and this McMullen guy wouldn't be in the race, if Trump wasn't busy shooting himself in both feet at the cyclical rate. Place the blame where it belongs, with Trump.
