"Suicide Squad" Beats "Guardians of the Galaxy" For Highest Opening Weekend August Release, Despite SJWs Trying to Talk Down the Movie as "Misogynist"

I'm not sure why the SJWs have such an anti-hard-on for the movie-- I guess because Harley Quinn is "sexualized," unlike, say, Black Widow. (Or any of the male characters -- but SJWs approve of that.)

Not sure if this is their attempt to get vengeance for the dropping-like-a-rock Ghostbusters reboot misfire. "You're going to keep women out of the important STEM field of Ghostbusting? Okay, we're going to try to talk down the box office of your traditional-gender-expectations eye candy HateFilm."

If they're trying to keep men away by warning them that the film sexualizes Margot Robbie's ass, they're failing.

Seems kind of a counterproductive line of attack, really.

The film made $135 million domestically (beating February's Deadpool, itslef a huge hit) and another $132 million in 57 foreign markets. (It's not opening in China -- too dark, and apparently the film features witchcraft.)

Reviewers seem to dislike it, calling it dark and disjointed, and both too lazy and too ambitious in introducing so many characters in one film.

I guess I'll see it. To be honest, I kinda forgot it was opening this weekend -- when you don't watch too much tv, that happens.

Oh, and Matt Damon's hypocritical Bourne movie dropped 62%, which is a big drop from first week to second week. Probably indicating short legs. Like Matt Damon.

By the way: The Ghostbusters idiots -- and I don't mean Sony so much as I mean the You Go Grrl fangirls who are determined that this movie will be acknowledged as a hit, despite the fact it's, you know, a flop -- are claiming the movie is "officially a hit" because it made back its production costs by grossing $158 million so far (or as of a few days ago).

Um, No, John Sexton explains. The actual budget of a film -- and this is the number always used to represent its actual cost, except for now, because the SJWs need a lower number, and because they can't do math -- is production costs plus advertising and prints costs.

Usually they say "double the production costs for the costs of the entire venture, including advertising and getting 5000 expensive prints out to theaters across the world."

Ghosbusters is reported to have a production cost of $144 million or something like that, and is rumored to have an advertising and prints cost of another $100 million (which sounds a little low to me, going by the "double the production cost" guideline).

So it has to make at least $250 million to break even.

This guy frantically tries to make the case that despite not making much (or any) money, Ghostbusters is still a success because it relaunched the brand.

Um, if the movie doesn't make any money, or just barely does, how on earth does that re-launch the brand? It buries the brand, Hoss.

The Green Lantern movie grossed $220 domestically. Add in foreign receipts, and I'm sure it made some money too -- a tiny bit.

Notice there was no Green Lantern 2: The Rise of Sinestro, though.

12 It is true. Manbusters did not have Margot Robbie's ass in the film at any point. Margot Robbie's ass sold a lot of tickets. Plus, you know, Suicide Squad's producers and makers actually went out and sold the movie as something we nerds would love to see. As opposed to say, telling all us nerds to go die in a fire because we thought the trailer was super-lame and didn't think the fat chick was funny.

36 Suicide Squad might see a massive drop off too unfortunately. No guarantee but Saturday was lower than Friday and that's typically not a good indication I guess. But its competing this week with what? Pete's Dragon?

And hopefully this also will end DC shooting itself in the foot. They'll likely do an "extended cut" dvd release that will fill in a bunch of the disjointed gaps similar to BvS.

37 Saw the new Bourne movie last weekend and was disappointed. Used to be a good series.

Script is a lazy paint by numbers rehash of parts of the 2nd and 3rd, with silliness. I half expected Roger Moore's James Bind to make a cameo near the end.

Matt Damon was clearly bored and only doing it for the money. I started rooting for "The Asset."

Alicia Vikander is the new new thing, but she failed at channeling Joan Allen's Pam Landy character.

41 From WZ:

A Change.org petition has been created asking the Cincinnati Bengals to change their name to the Cincinnati "Harambes."

Harambe was the gorilla who was shot and killed after a young boy climbed into his pen at the Cincinnati Zoo, sparking outrage.

The petition, created on Saturday is asking the Bengals change their name and is collecting signatures via Change.org. And if you're wondering the reasoning behind the petition, creator, Julian Ortiz, writes:

The Cleveland Browns named their team after a former Coach who made a great impact on their city so why can't the Bengals do it as well in honor of a hero who made an impact on their city too!

55 they went and put her randomly with hulk dude in the avengers movie so that was kind of a bust.

It made sense, conceptually, but since they left out the entire "lets get together and try to make this thing work" sequence, it seemed jarring and sudden.

Whedon was trying to present Black Widow as a horribly scarred person with a very nasty past, so she's a monster inside. Hulk is a man who has a monster inside, too that manifests and causes terrible things: so they are like each other!

But since he didn't have time to develop this concept, have them show any sort of connection, and become close, all you got was a "Black Widow is terrified by the Hulk, then falls in love next scene" feel.

Her and Daredevil actually had a thing in the comics. They worked well together, although she would cross lines he would not. Also in the comics, she's very old: she was a kid in WW2.

56 Don't forget that in the end the studio gets from 50-55% of the box office receipts, movie theaters get the rest.

So Ghostbusters has made 160 million? Okay, the studio has made about 80 million, maybe a little bit more. They don't need to double the gross so far to break even, they need to at least triple it.

I know several dudes in the movie theater biz, including my brother. Those old huge reels you had to change and get just right are a thing of the past.

Still, its not free to process and send these things. And according to experts, it costs 100-150 million to advertise, distribute, and show films worldwide, so your worldwide earnings have to be more than that just to break even there, too.

Ghostbusters is a loss, so far, and probably will remain so.

91 My 18 year-old daughter was crazy to see Suicide Squad; we had both seen an awesome trailer more than a year ago a were looking to have a fun Summer weekend night at the movies. I didn't go into the theater expecting to watch The Seventh Seal.

The movie made no sense and at one point, my daughter had to explain to me what had just happened. Also, I didn't see anything in it that was sexist, but what I did see was that the villian ( the Delevingne chick ) was just plain old ugly even when she was supposed to be seductive. At one point, I was wondering why, in a movie that is pretty much aimed at guys was there not MORE overt feminine sexuality. It's as if women have to tone it down these days. I am a woman and I am sick of people telling me that folks like Michelle Obama and the fat chick from Girls or females who have bodies like adolescent boys are pretty or womanly or beautiful or whatever. Just. stop.

103 Here's my review of SS from last week:

Saw "Suicide Squad" today.

The beautiful and perceptive Mrs naturalfake wanted to see it, so off we went.

We both enjoyed it.

This movie will make a lot of money because it's one thing that the DC movies have not been -

Fun!

Honestly, I'm not getting the whole movie is disjointed and confusing thing, I saw in reviews-

cuz the story's pretty damn linear with character flashbacks interspersed.

I think where the confusion might come in is that the mission changes 3 times during the course of the movie as circumstances change.

Maybe they needed to hit this aspect harder in the dialogue. But, it is spelled out in the movie.

Overall, the writing is serviceable with some really nice moments throughout. And the actors are all good in their parts.

Where that falls apart a bit is when they face the Big Bad, and Deadshot has a moment that is poorly handled cause there's too much stuff in too short a time- I suspect Will Smith Inc's writers tried to jam in too many "Moments!" for Smith.

Harley Quinn is handled well in my opinion. And her moment of pledging her love to the Joker is a very well written scene that is performed well.

The Joker is an interesting version of the character cuz he's really not funny or clever at all. He's pretty much a straight up psycho with (and this is an interesting touch...Phyllis Diller's laugh.)

I thought I'd hate the Joker as a character, but actually he fits very well into the movie.

There's some ambition in the writing as it compares and parallels 3 of the Suicide Squad's relationship with their significant others. And this is used nicely in some key moments.

So....fun time at the movies. Go see it.

The downside I would say is that the director, maybe editors have zero idea how to handle a group action scene.

It winds up being a big gamisch each time and that makes the movie seem repetitive,

when we should be seeing an escalation of the action and cooperation as the Suicide Squad approaches the Big Bad.

Check it out.

I still stand by that.

Obviously, for all of the straight guys watching the movie.

Solid movie. Did a good job of launching a lot of character backstory from mostly the B and C lists of the DC universe. Not only are DC's characters other than the JLA bigs less well known, but DC itself takes a back seat to Marvel except for Bats.

Yeah, wish the resolution had gone a little differently. One character you want to see more of is pretty much off the board, and I know enough about military explosives breach techniques that a couple blasts in that movie were like "Uh, no, fuck no, C-4 does not do that....", but in all I really did enjoy myself.

This character will be supported by a black male who is competent but does not overshadow the greatness of the lead and who admires the lead for her understated and not sexualized strong, independent femininity. There should also supporting male and female characters of indeterminate sexuality. Any heterosexual male role must be portrayed as a) an older man who is shown how his archaic macho-ness is outdated and inferior to the lead, or b) female eye candy that is subservient to the lead

164 149 It has been decided by Top.Women that all movies will star a strong female lead who is an inherent expert at everything without any indication of prior aptitude or training who's purpose is to be a role model for young women and avenge women against the patriarchy.

182 Actually, that kind of sounds like why they were not perfect for each other! Same is boring.

Yeah, its pretty lazy writing really, and Black Widow comes off as pathetic and whiny rather than strong and interesting. He introduced her so well with her taking out an entire Russian gang while interrogating them on the phone, but it went kind of downhill from there.

Her interaction with Steve Rogers is her best stuff, since he's such a good guy and she's so shadowy, he actually helps her be a better person and she helps him think through some things alien to his understanding.

I liked some of the concepts in Van Helsing but it was awful overall.

How old is homo sapiens sapiens? 'Bout 200K yrs, give or take. How far does the genus homo go back? Million or two, there. Sexual reproduction goes back, don't know how, maybe a billion or so.

The thrill we get from seeing Harley Quinn's ass goes a way back in time, it's hard wired, and I do mean hard. That shape fires up low level circuits that go back millions of years.

191 I saw Suicide Squad Friday night. I didn't have any trouble following it, but that's because I knew most of the characters from the 1980s comic series, which was a good blend of political thrillers and superperson stuff.

Will Smith was the Fresh Prince with a gun.

Margot Robbie looked great and did a great job with the mediocre script she was given.

Viola Davis nailed the part of Amanda Waller, who has always been a badass of questionable character.

Captain Boomerang could have been written out and I wouldn't have missed him. That's too bad, because in the books, he was one of the standouts.

I wanted to see more of El Diablo.

Croc...meh.

WB should have just had a CGI Joker voiced by Mark Hammill. It would have been better than Leto.

I do appreciate the bits of humor, whether thrown in at the last minute or not.

194 I can't believe Social Justice has grown to the point where defending Hollywood blockbusters is the hill to die on. Now an obvious flop has to be a hit, or else the patriarchy wins.

"It's Paul Feig and Melissa McCarthy's biggest opening!"

Just barely edging past every other Feig/McCarthy movie, but with triple the budget.

They gave Feig a massive budget, a big IP, all the support and marketing possible, with the intention that Ghostbusters would be their summer tent pole and spawn a huge franchise...

And it performs the same as every other Paul Feig movie. That's not just a flop, it's a disaster.

And all the little Justice bloggers are too stupid to realize they're just repeating talking points put out by Sony PR to save the Execs' collective asses over this disaster. But that's Social Justice now. Slavishly providing ass cover for the rich, dumbass hacks running the worst studio in Hollywood.

Turns out Ghostbusters really was the funniest comedy of the year.

215 Finally saw the new Star Wars film. Its okay on one level as fun popcorn space opera stuff. Very forgettable and way too much crammed into too short a film, but kinda fun.

In another level it didn't feel very much like Star Wars to me, Abrams doesn't seem to have the visual feel down quite right. And there are many, huge, painful plot holes, irrational leaps, and "what the??" moments. All the new characters are really forgettable -- I literally can only remember the bad guy's name and he was a lame emo spotty teenager.

The only really good scene in the entire film was Han Solo getting killed, and that's because Harrison Ford is so damned good. Chewey came across as kind of pathetic, and Princess Leia was just... boring, poorly acted, and like she was distracted from her real interests in life to do a few scenes.

And that last scene? With whatserface the Mary Sue earnestly reaching out with the light saber toward Old Bearded Luke, for like five silent minutes? Holy Anime, what a crappy end to a film.

They specialize in auto antiques, and Mike is an expert Indian Motorcycle collector and appraiser.

Watch a few shows and "ghey" will not cross your mind. Frank has heated up sandwiches on their engine while driving, they tell fart jokes, and both will always try to buy the antique girlie car and beer posters.

Re: Property Brothers.
First, they are twins, with an older brother. They grew up on a ranch in Alberta, Jonathan the contractor who does the actual work, has been married and divorced, and is definitely straight. Drew, the realtor brother currently has a girlfriend who lives in their house they remodeled in Las Vegas.

It's odd, because most men seem to have the same reaction. Mr. Jen argued with me every time I had their show on that they were gay. Having watched the series when they went back to Alberta and remodeled a ranch home that was located on the first ranch their parents managed, and their parents and brother visited during the build, he's finally convinced they really are brothers, but he still doesn't like them,LOL.

242 Seems to be. A version first appeared in 1959, then was redone in 1987, which is the version the movie was based off of.

Right, the original series was more a Dirty Dozen kind of thing, and the reboot was the original "Amanda Waller takes supervillains from a secret super prison and uses them to fight bad guys" concept. Really well done in the comic, too, great idea.

I have a real yen for Ann Hathaway, so her as Catwoman really worked for me. Really, really worked. And I love how they used the goggles to give her little cat ears.

267 Another thing I like about what the DC universe is doing: the Joker seems to be an ongoing concern, rather than just some guy who went on a weeklong crimespree once like in the previous Batman movie series.

I also think people are being too harsh on Leto. Nicholson was just being Nicholson, and Ledger's Joker was a unique "darker" take specifically for those movies, but I thought Leto did a good job as a straight-up comic book villain. (It may help that he's the only Joker so far that actually looks like the Joker).

284 Apparently the company that edited the trailers, which got a ton of likes on YouTube, were handed the keys to re-edit the first half of the movie. Then, you can tell exactly the part leading into the second half where the executives finally let off trying to rework everything and the story settled down into a more coherent narrative.

Well, what was great about the comic was that he almost always dialed up a different hero,

and about half the time they were some lame-ass superhero whose powers didn't really work well against the villain so Robby Reid would have to figure out what to do.

So, you can see why it would make a great action comedy movie. Those scripts would practically write themselves. And could go dark to provide motivation if needed.

Sockamagee! indeed.

Yeah for us guys "designer" and "interior decorator" are the same things.

Especially when he starts talking tile patterns.

317 If you were making an action comedy superhero movie, either Legion of Substitute Heroes or the Inferior Five.

Robby Reed would make a good 30 minute animated series. But no crossovers.

319 Hate to say it, but the media and all their Muslim love and feel-goodness make me glad the hijab-clad US fencer lost.
Like I said, I hate to say it.

323 I watched Indy Jones and the Last Crusade with the kids this weekend. Still love it, but holy crap are many of the stunts totally cheeseball and the acting corny. I mean, Ford and Connery are great, and it's all in good fun, but if this was a modern movie we'd be comparing Spielberg to Michael Bay.

Posted by: Holdfast at August 08, 2016 04:13 PM (nNdYv)

324 Apologies if it's already been mentioned, but Ghostbusters reportedly has to make at least 300 mil in order to break even. The general rule is that a movie has to gross twice its production budget before it can begin to turn a profit.

And keep in mind that due to its subject matter(ghosts, the supernatural), the movie can't play in China. That market was key in turning Warcraft from a massive bomb(which it was domestically) into an actual hit worldwide. No such bailout coming for Ghostbusters.

325 SJWs were already mewling about Harley a few weeks before the movie, but when it started getting successful the shrieks got louder. If there is anything SJWs hate the most, it is beautiful capable people being successful. If they're white and have guns, all the more PRIVILEGE to shout about.
Deleted scenes are rumored to have more backstory for the characters, which was cut for length. Unlike "Batman vs Sadman" aka BvS, I might get the extended cut version of Suicide Squad when it's on Blu-Ray.

Posted by: Jon at August 08, 2016 04:21 PM (YE6k9)

326 Just got back from seeing "Suicide Squad". It's a decent enough film, not great, but not the train wreck the critics are making it out to be. As many have said, it has pacing and editing issues. One can hope there's an extended cut in the making to smooth out it's rough edges.

I will second this.
The bad guy is under utilized, but it has some nice character moments for the leads. I think it is the best of the JJ Verse movies. Too bad it is dropping like a rock.

Posted by: Darth Randall at August 08, 2016 04:37 PM (6n332)

330 Actually, the film needs to make substantially more than the combined budget and PA costs to break even. The theaters showing the movie get a hefty cut of the box office take. And for studios increasing relying on huge ticket sales in China, the studio take there (albeit not relevant in this case) is a smaller percentage than usual due to their laws. Plus, if I'm not mistaken, the studios need to keep and spend that money in China.

It's possible that the "double the production costs" thing works because it assumes a generally predictable return from auxiliary markets (TV sales, home video, merchandise, etc.). But there's no way you break even on a worldwide box office take that merely matches the production costs.

I would rate Suicide Squad in the middle if the superhero movies. I think it's about on par with Deadpool. I would rank it above movies like BvS, Ant-Man, Civil War, and the recent Spider-man movies. It's not better than Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers, or Winter Soldier.

Posted by: FoxHunt at August 08, 2016 04:48 PM (8SF+v)

332 The break-even point on the new Ghostbusters is actually $500 million. The HotAir article you link to makes this point. The studio only gets about 50% of the ticket revenue back, so they have to make twice the production and advertising costs to break even. The movie is, thus, likely to lose over $100 million.

Posted by: gts109 at August 08, 2016 04:59 PM (Deogo)

333 Ok, spent way, way too much time writing about Suicide Squad.

Linked.

I can't imagine why the fans aren't filling the seats in droves.

Posted by: Rusty Nail at August 08, 2016 03:05 PM (S2VsH)

It actually isn't like that. The trailers didn't help the film.

OTOH, the SS trailers had me intrigued but the reviews pretty much killed my interest.

Posted by: WOPR - Nationalist at August 08, 2016 05:05 PM (Ee2nz)

335 Neither Ghostbusters nor Suicide Squad is being officially allowed into China, so the studios aren't counting on those numbers at all. No go on the ghosts and the witches.

Although, somehow the Pirates of the Caribbean ride is just fine at Shanghai Disney.

Posted by: vki at August 08, 2016 05:36 PM (qySNZ)

336 So it has to make at least $250 million to break even.

-----

Double it again, because the studio only take half the gross. The other half goes to the theaters.

I was going to go see Suicide Squad until Will Smith opened his piehole and said Trump needs to be cleansed from America and how Hollywood can be used to counter the Fox News version of the muslim threat

Posted by: Flawless Male Logic at August 08, 2016 06:38 PM (lKyWE)

338 Margot Robbie and Will Smith absolutely stole the show. She's such a perfect Harley. Super funny. They did fuck around a bit with the Joker/Harley relationship, but I ate my popcorn and enjoyed the flick. 3D was sub par so don't spend for that.

Nope. It's on track to lose Sony $100 million. And they have shareholders and investors they answer to. There will be no sequel.

340 No GL 2 because Ryan Reynolds is a wimp. Hal Jordan is the man, you need someone who oozes testosterone and confidence. Granted a difficult combination to find in the Hollywood of today.

As for the Suicide Squad, so Villains act as heroes, how apt in this upside down world.
