Nothing lasts forever. All good things come to an end.
And so this will be my final ONT.
I've been doing them since 2008ish, on average 5 nights a week, 48 weeks a year and as far as I know I've never missed a regularly scheduled ONT. If you run the numbers, that's something like 1900+ ONTs which is a pretty solid achievement. Even if a quarter of them were in fact slapdash, half-assed affairs, that's still 1400+ quality full-value ONTs in the portfolio.
And it's been fun and enjoyable over this time which is why I've kept on doing them. But I'm not going to lie - it's also been a bit of a grind. It's like having a second job except the only pay is my own satisfaction, an attaboy on occasion, and getting to see my output spark the funneh in the comments once in a while.
To be fair though a lot of the stuff I did for the ONT I probably would have done anyway since I read a lot and I'm a political geek - and have been one since my earliest days. And by early days I mean early - going back to when I was barely pubescent and first discovered my dad's stash of Milton Friedman books in his sock drawer and then later in middle school when I hounded my mother into driving me and my best friend downtown so we could work the phones for Reagan's 1980 campaign (I still wasn't old enough to vote for him in 1984 either).
From there it was obscure political chat areas on dial-up BBSes and by college I was hitting usenet hard and mainlining Burke with a Kirk chaser. Then came talk radio, AOL forums, and then later the Cambrian explosion of conservative blogs and an actual right wing online community. I've always been somewhere contributing in my own small way and eventually I found my way here, a fun-loving Animal House hiding a smart military blog.
But no place is ever immune to the forces of change and events. Nor are people. And eight years of Obama have taken their toll everywhere. Good cheer and humor have slowly faded and now these are the days of knives and sinat chinam.
Sadly I seem to be out of step with the tenor of the times. And probably out of step with the majority of commenters here. Perhaps if I were more clever, more mercenary, I would get ahead of the trend, work it, and parlay it into money and influence. Alas I'm not clever in this way. And it sounds like a jay-oh-bee.
So rather than continue on in what is likely to become an ever more un-fun endeavor, I'd rather call it a day and leave on a high note with a solid body of work behind me.
What will I do next? I don't know. I have no plans.
I might blog on occasion possibly on things completely non-political. Or focus completely on real-world stuff and/or take my own modified, limited, personal version of the Benedict Option. Or perhaps nothing at all in particular. I make no promises or commitments.
Will we ever meet again? Maybe. Possibly. The future is uncertain. But the internets aren't that big. So probably.

And just to be clear this has nothing to do with Ace. He's always treated me kindly and been supportive and willing to do whatever he could to make doing the ONTs easier on me. The private Ace is pretty much the same as the public Ace except maybe funnier. He's a good guy who deserves more than he's received. However honesty does compel me to point out that his promised blog dental coverage was to put it charitably a wild exaggeration.
I do sincerely thank you all for the good times here.
And should bad times come remember this: Nothing lasts forever. All bad things come to an end too.

You have always brought interesting content to the ONT, and I've had a lot of fun snarking on it. The Watches Off Topic thread was a lot of fun, but I think it annoyed you a bit. You put in so much work to bring the ONT and the horde went off on watches for some inexplicable reason.

Although I am a lowly lurker, I may qualify as a member of the Horde in spirit, as I've been reading here a long time. I'm not totally shocked by the news, as the signs have been there for months. I also felt like I could relate to you in many ways due to a heavy overlap in obvious interests (and the corresponding dread settling over us in the last year). I always looked forward to the ONT. Now, there goes one of the last shining lights of this blog.
However, I understand and support your decision. You deserve a break, as you have expended a huge amount of energy to give people quite a bit of enjoyment five days a week.

It has been a good run, yes, I don't fit here very well any more myself. That bastard in the WH has drained almost all the funny out of my soul as well and politics in general has become somewhat brutal, especially for conservatives.

Not surprised, from what I've read and stuff all the jokes were in that first trailer. So WB panicked after the meh performance of BvS and so they went to insert more jokes in and then while the director was doing the final edit WB did their own edit too.
So it will probably wind up being a case that they panicked cut out a bunch of stuff and an extended cut will make it better and should be what was in theaters.

I remember when you were talking about Fireball and I thought, WTF? Then I went to Vegas and they were having a "buy two beers and get an airplane liquor bottle" deal, so I got a pair of Heinekens and an airplane bottle of Fireball. "How bad could it be?"

Ran through episode 1 last night. It's a Year One style setting (which the trailer should have made obvious), but with modern technology (smart phones show up from time to time). Carmine Falcone's the local crime boss, but if you've seen these kinds of settings, then you've got an idea of how long he's likely to last...
Catwoman shows up early on, and Bruce meets an old friend that he hasn't seen for twenty years named Oswald Cobblepot (he's the guy in the trailer ranting about the incoming revolution). Gordon seems to generally like this new masked vigilante, but the cops have orders to shoot to kill. And successful city DA Harvey Dent is running for mayor with the financial backing and support of Bruce Wayne.
Just to keep things from getting completely predictable, there's a plot thread that I haven't seen before in a Batman story - allegations, supposedly with evidence backing them up, have suddenly arisen that Bruce's parents were part of the organized crime community prior to their deaths.
Many of the aspects of the game are familiar to anyone who's played one of Telltale's games. Bruce does a lot of talking, and people make a note of his actions. Batman does a lot of fighting involving reacting to key presses displayed on your screen, with some conversation. There's also a crime scene to examine, which works somewhat like the crime scenes in the Arkham games. And at one point you get to plan how Batman will take out a group of thugs that are on guard in the room that he's about to enter.

Superman went through a lot of aborted attempts before Singer's mess. I haven't seen the link you posted, and while I'd heard about Nicholas Cage (who eventually ended up as Ghost Rider instead) and Tim Burton, I've never been familiar with the details.
I did, however, hear about one attempt that apparently reached the "we have a script!" stage. And boy, did it sound awful. IIRC, Krypton apparently still existed, but was being raped by the horrible strip mining style business practices of those who followed the evil Zod. For some inexplicable reason, baby Kal-El was critically important to eventually stopping Zod and restoring Krypton. And the cliff-hangerish ending was supposed to end with the revelation that Lex Luthor was a Kryptonian who was working for Zod.

My mom is seriously demented. She cannot remember from 5 minutes ago, let alone 5 years. She still has most of her childhood, but not much beyond that.
Her mom also had dementia. I'm looking forward to that particular situation myself, apparently.
OTOH, Mom has forgotten why she was so damned angry all of the time, usually at us kids. She has forgotten why she was so upset over trivial matters, although she has fixated on a couple of things and held onto them for some reason. She is, in fact, much easier to live with. We thought she would be institutionalized by now, but Dad has managed to make it work at home. She sticks to her routines, she has lived there for over 50 years so it is easier for her to navigate, and nobody puts much pressure on her. We try to not remind her too much of things she has happily forgotten, and it works.
All is not lost, Sven. Your relationship may change, but it won't disappear.

I suppose I should start with thanks and praise, so, thanks for all the hard work and great ONTs. And the less than great ONTs, too, the fun and the punishing.
But primarily, good for you, and us, too. Been seeing you become increasingly grumpy for a while. It showed in comments of complaint about the job, about the commenters, about why you don't comment. Was it the news, the horde, and the trolls, or your own skin getting thin, endurance worn to frazzles? Truly understandable, but... but...
I don't like it much when I see good folks - and I think of comments by Poppins and Fenelon, but others, too - who obviously aren't joking when they talk about the news being distressing or their blood pressure affected.
If one can't be Christian-ish (be of good cheer - in but not of the world), or at least Pogo-ish ("Don't take life so serious, it ain't no-how permanent"), then it's time to get out of the kitchen. Better offline than discouraged and bummed, snapping and dumping emotionally.
But I would wish for happier-ness for y'all. Detachment in a healthy way.
Maybe I just took too many trips on the astral plane when younger, or maybe it's because my Worry circuits are all tied up with my own private train-wreck of a life, but for some reason - "it all" gets to me, but just one item at a time, "it all" doesn't mount up, doesn't accumulate. (Of course, I'm not required to be here, policing the aisles.)
Sometimes I wish I felt it all more deeply, but mostly I'm one of "many here among us who feel that life is but a joke."
Getting tl;dr here. But, whatever, it's a watershed moment. Dusty-eyed water shed.
We won't have Maet to kick us around anymore, then. But he'll be back, I trust, after a suitable time recuperating from the drudgery. Maet drudgery. Get it?

It's already been said dozens of times (including a nice huge bit of praise from the Boss, above), so I won't go on about what a great institution Maet's ONT has become.
Honestly I did wonder at times, given the quality and diversity of the content, and the substance that Maet put into certain ONTs, just how he could do it, having a real life and job, etc.
Together with the commenters/comments (well .... MOST of you .....), this was by such a margin the best evening general blog that I've ever come across that I literally don't have any others I follow, at all.
The time zone thing denied the central and eastern time zone morons the habit of the ONT. We left coasters have been privileged.
Here's to hoping we see/encounter Maet on the intertubes in some form or fashion.
P.S. Maet - hell with the tone of the times/the commenters ...... you are a commenter too, so pls lend your talents to the threads when you are able and feel so inclined.

The quality of a Summer Blockbuster is inversely proportional to its advertising budget. Just this Summer, see: Independence Day, Batman vs Superman, the new Jason Borne movie and now Suicide Squad, the most (paid) hyped movie of the Summer. All disappointing, all with massive ad buys.
I don't get it. Do they just say "fuck it" when it comes to writing a decent script because they know they can financially make up for it with the international audience who just want to see a visually impressive Big Budget American Movie?
How much can it really cost to produce a decent plot vs a bad one in the context of a 8-figure movie budget?

That's a valid point, but I don't think that's entirely it.
There's a long history of movies being made with the intent of a sequel to follow (assuming the first didn't totally blow). Even then, the problem with the shitty blockbusters of late isn't an unresolved ending, but poor writing and directing in favor of OH LOOK ACTION EXPLOSIONS CGI.
It would be easy to assume it was just incompetence or greed, but in Hollywood we're talking about a sector of the industry that is the best in the world at what they do. There almost has to be a structural issue at play- too many writers, too many committees, etc.
These are movies with a solid acting, directing and writing staff in addition to a big budget. Once or twice is just misjudgement. Repeating the same mistakes over and over again speaks to a greater problem that I just don't understand.

some time ago in the side bar someone posted a video of the "best" simpsons opening showing the couch driving through the countryside. well, it's actually been done. edd china, mechanic on the show "wheeler dealers" i've mentioned is something of an inventor and has made a fully road worthy motorized couch. it can do 80 mph! it's passed its mot ((necessary to drive in the u.k.) and really goes. check it out on youtube, ddd china, couch mobile or some such.

Makes me wonder what BvS (which I still haven't seen) would have been like if Ben Affleck had been directing instead of Zack Snyder. Affleck's got a decent stable of directing credits to his name. He couldn't have done any worse than Snyder, and it seems likely he would have done at least a little better.
It'd be nice if WB finally gets their act together. They've got a solid stable of heroes, and DC's TV shows have generally been much better than Marvel's. The potential's there. It's just been mishandled. Hopefully Wonder Woman will mark the turn around point, but the subject matter is one that could easily end up following in the footsteps of the recent Ghostbusters mess.
Oh, and the Suicide Squad director's "F*** Marvel!" comment?
Seriously?
Until the DC directors can actually demonstrate that they know what the Hell they're doing, they really need to show a little humility.

Cap's supposedly the most "boring" of the Marvel Super Heroes since he's the moral compass for pretty much every other super hero in the setting, and yet his movies have consistently been among the best of them.

I don't mind the Thor movies. And Ragnarok might be interesting since they'll be incorporating some of the Planet Hulk story into it. I think Iron Man 2 and 3 are the weakest, followed by The Incredible Hulk.
Ant-Man is far better than it deserves to be.

mike brewer, the dealer in "wheeler dealers", is from lambeth. a district of london. it goes back to something like the 10th century, named for the place they drove sheep to the thames. while it is not specifically cockney (restricted to the area within earshot of st. mary-le-bow, brewer speaks with a distinct cockney patois.
but cockney originally meant the opposite of working class londoner. in the 15th century it was a term of derision for young, effeminate city dwellers, londoners in particular (like metrosexuals). amazing! a complete turn around in meaning!

I wish I could find a way to help you bring the humor back, for both you and Ace. For someone like me, who's only special to a very few people, it helps to remember that despite how dreadful an issue seems in the present moment, historically, it really is all small stuff. But maybe it's not so easy to be nonchalant when you're in a position where you feel you can actually do something to effect a change, especially if you get frustrated that nothing's changing, or that things seem to be getting worse.
You do good work, even if it doesn't always feel like it. You do have an effect on people who rarely post, like me. I always feel better when I come here, just knowing that there are other people out there who think like I do.

Though I've been a lurker since '08, it has only been since joining the ranks of the unemployed last fall that I've been able to stay up to enjoy some of the ONTs, but in that short time your delightful posts and the comments they engender have been a source of great entertainment and have lifted my spirits at times when it felt as though "2016--the Year of Teh Suck" would surely engulf me.

Their conventions are where the studios try to convince the theater owners to book films coming up on the schedule. Sometime expensive films have been killed in pre-production because they were received poorly at NATO.
It will soon be impossible to get a theatrical release, other than by four-walling, a film that the Chinese government finds objectionable.

Quite honestly though, Maet's ONTs looked like they took a considerable amount of time to pull together. To do that 5 days a week for 8 years (unpaid) in addition to having a regular job - we are lucky he stuck around as long as he did.

At first, the ONT was a weird nuisance to me. A semi-non-political interruption in programming that I didn't bother to read. Now, for the last 5 years or so, I look forward to it with a passion. And, no offense, am usually disappointed when someone other than Maet does it. It's what I read at night while brushing my teeth, or what I read while doing the same in the morning should it be posted late. I can't begin to count the number of times I've had a moment of boredom and gotten a moment of relief knowing there's an ONT I can catch up on.
Reading this goodbye was like losing a friend, one I never met and will possibly not appreciate how much they're going to be missed. Thanks for all of the great content over all the years,and best of luck!

And the Memorial Day ONT was the stuff of legends. Staying up late for the ONT was something to look forward to, just like when you're a little kid (Moronette, in this case). Even though I've mostly lurked the past few (depressing Obongo), I'd still pull up your ONTs on the iPad to check the absolute pinnacle of off-the-wall subjects/links. I often wondered about the size of your brain.

You will be sorely missed. The ONT was appointment reading, and I learned something in each and every one of them. You really outdid yourself most nights. I know how hard it is to keep up a blog, as my own has been dormant for nearly 3 years, and really a little longer than that with sparse posts.

Thanks for making my morning reading so enjoyable for the past several years. After stumbling across AoSHQ, I found your ONT to be the crown jewel of this wonderful treasure of a site. I cannot count how many times I grinned and laughed while reading your posts. Nor can I count the times I told my lovely wife that she had to read your post for one or two items, and that would start a conversation between us. (Not that we hadn't other things to discuss, but your ONT was yet another way to keep those marital lines of communication open, and that's a valuable service rendered.)

I fear people are pulling back for personal safety as the future is uncertain and it is starting to feel like the results of the next election could put people in reeducation camps.
The internet informed me on political philosophy and geopolitics in the wake of 9/11 but lately I read Ace, posts by AllahPundit and instapundit. That's it. I used to follow dozens of blogs but the era of informative, cooperative blogs is coming to an end.
We had a good run. The blogosphere really was something in its day.

I stopped sports blogging a while back for the same reasons. It's a shame what the online community has become, but I suspect it's a reflection of the anger and divisiveness that has permeated this country over the past few years.

Like others, this has been my favorite website for some years now, the the ONT my favorite thing. It's about the only political forum where I feel comfortable. And the ONT has always been something I look forward to as a FUN part of my day. How many other political sites can you really say are fun? None, for me.
But the ONTs are fun, your content terrific, and the commentary great. So you've touched a lot of people and gladdened our fretful lives. I will miss you and your work.

I have to say, I've always liked the ONT. The content was usually great (not the Yoko. Never the Yoko), and you only had to edit my political post in the ONT once before I got the message.
