Mike Pence Pointedly Declines to Endorse John McCain, Kelly Ayotte

Bizarro said, "Me so happy me could cry."

I don't mind the hardball here. I dislike these two Democrats, and I don't mind Trump playing a little roughhouse: Either share your base of college-educated liberal-leaning semi-Republicans, or I'll take my base of working class voters away from you.

This whole "I refuse to support you on moral grounds" thing can run in any number of directions, guys.

A lot of us have conscience objections to the various RINOs, sellouts, and charlatans in the party too -- but we put those aside due to the more important practical considerations of keeping the Democrats out of the White House.

But if, per the #NeverTrumpers, we're all going to vote strictly on conscience... well, no one should endanger his immortal soul by corrupting it with John McCain, Kelly Ayotte, or Paul Ryan for that matter.

Status Games: The very idea that Trump (or Pence) would endorse McCain or Ayotte, while they refuse to reciprocate, is a variation of the Status Claim Game I've seen the left pull on too many occasions to list.

The idea is this: You're Morally Superior, and your Inferiors ought to be aware of that (or else they're pig-ignorant in addition to being Morally Inferior), ergo, the rules for you are obviously different than the rules for them.

They are virtuous; you are not. Therefore, they can insult you, but you may not insult them back; they can dominate the airwaves and congressional schedules with their grievances and preoccupations, whereas if you do the same, you're being an unreasonable Wacko Bird.

This idea that there are different Castes of people entitled to different levels of Status and Privilege is so corrosive and hateful I cannot begin to express my revulsion at it.

So I don't get people who will claim, "Oh, he should endorse them."

Why? Why would he confirm, why would he reify, their assumption that they exist in a higher caste than he does?

Anytime someone attempts to put themselves in a caste above one, one is obligated, as a free-minded free man, to reject that attempt at subordination vigorously, and even as rudely as possible -- after all, it is deeply rude to assert one's Superior Caste over someone else in the first place.

A rude assertion compels a rude rejection.

The proper American response -- nay, the proper human response -- to "Know your place!" is "Go fuck yourself in the heart with a knife."

It always has been. It always will be.

More: I like this turn of phrase:

That has been the mood this election season and why the parties have been rocked so hard with dissension. No matter how it is said in whatever words some people think that they were born with boots and spurs and the rest of humanity with saddles. And right now a lot of people are fed up with these attempts of others to ride them.

Some people see it as "dangerous populism" that some of us are insisting on something like actual social/political equality.

A lot of people seem to think they're Chiefs and the rest of us are Indians.

The thing about Chiefs, though: They were elected by the Indians.

They didn't just get up in front of the tribe and say, "Uh yeah I took two years of Public Policy at Dartmouth. So like I'm Chief now, fellas."

Well, they could say that, but they'd be tied behind a horse and set to burning along the rocks and cacti.

25 You know what may be one of the only good things to come out of this election cycle?

The destruction of the notion that everyone is obligated to endorse or support someone merely because they belong to the same political party.

Because no. If you cannot support a person because you are in substantial disagreement with their positions, then you are under no obligation to do so. Now, you should be polite about it, which Pence was, but there's no need to buy into the my team no matter what.

Nor is any individual obligated to cast their individual vote for any candidate ever. Every individual's vote must be earned.

So if any tiny good at all can be clawed out of the detritus of this election cycle, that would be one that I find quite positive indeed.

It's more than that. Political correctness and the manipulation of social cues has been the vehicle by which the masses have been swayed, but the people doing the manipulating are a cabal of people who hate Western civilization, assume it is the source of all bad things in the world, and want to utterly destroy it in the assumptions that their utopian project will replace it and everything will be rainbows and unicorn farts.

Our people are being lead astray by scumbags that hate them, and think that all of humanity is and ought to be clay on their potter's wheel, to be molded as they see fit.

108 Yep, there's a real realignment afoot here. I remember back during the Crash of '08, reading that this a major shitstorm, and our world wasn't going to be the same. I came to that conclusion myself. The existing order has run its course and something new is gonna take its place.

These things are nasty and scary. I have no idea how it's going to play out.

Basically, we'll come out of renewed and stronger than ever, with renewed purpose and a new political landscape that will last another 100 years or so until the next shitstorm.

Or we destroy ourselves, and the US of A experiment comes to an end. (there will be something, but it will be something totally different)

Either way, the world order since the last big crisis, WWII and Great Depression, is going to be swept away.

143 Okay fine , don't take no shit from the Left and eviscerate the MSM, but Trump has the ability to be the bigger man and make a huge public appearance of attempting to bring in those people in the Party that oppose him. If they still oppose him he has lost nothing and gained everything in terms of appearing Presidential and magnanimous. Many on the fence will have a reason to vote for him instead of staying home. Again if winning is the goal, change your negatives.

I don't think I will shock anyone here by pointing out that there is, on occasion, a wee bit of backscratching going on in politics. If you want someone to do for you, you have to be willing to do for them.

Supporting Trump after he became the nominee entitles you to the same from him. Once the politician has won his own nomination, then Trump would be expected to support that GOP nominee.

177 President Obama has decided to be a dick and seek a new United Nations Security Council resolution that would call for an end to nuclear testing, a move that leading lawmakers are calling an end run around Congress.

Top administration officials, including Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz, briefed lawmakers and congressional staffers this week about President Obama's decision to push for the U.N. action this September, to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, which was adopted in September 1996 but was never ratified by the Senate.

National Security Council spokesperson Ned Price told me that the administration still would like to see the Senate ratify the test ban treaty but is "looking at possible action in the UN Security Council that would call on states not to test and support the CTBT's objectives. We will continue to explore ways to achieve this goal, being careful to protect the Senate's constitutional role."

The administration did not consult Congress before making the decision, and leading Republicans, including those who opposed Obama's nuclear deal with Iran, are irate that the White House plans another major national security move without their advice or consent.

"This is a plan to cede the Senate's constitutional role to the U.N. It's dangerous and it's offensive. Not only is this an affront to Congress, it's an affront to the American people," Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) told me. "It directly contradicts the processes that are in place to make sure that Congress appropriately weighs in on international agreements."

198 Okay fine , don't take no shit from the Left and eviscerate the MSM, but Trump has the ability to be the bigger man and make a huge public appearance of attempting to bring in those people in the Party that oppose him. If they still oppose him he has lost nothing and gained everything in terms of appearing Presidential and magnanimous. Many on the fence will have a reason to vote for him instead of staying home. Again if winning is the goal, change your negatives.

I honestly think Trump would be willing to make peace but you need to remember, its a two way street.

Trump has met with basically every Republican that has opposed him to try and mend fences.

I'm sure this info sounds bunk because its a random internet poster, but I actually know an operative that worked for Kasich and he said that Trump offered him the VP slot and tried to mend fences but Kasich was having none of it.

260 McCain lost the last speck of goodwill he had with me when he inserted language into the Senate's FY2017 defense bill to take all surplus weapons in DOD storage (including all the 1911s that are supposed to go to CMP) and melt them down at Rock Island Arsenal to made force protection gates and shit.

Now that went away in a later draft, but it left his committee after his staff drafted it. Command accountability, CAPT McCain.

So I now wish to see him retired dishonorably and rancorously because the angry old fuck wouldn't go away after his 2008 humiliation.

See, we are always told we have to respect other cultures. Those same fucks never give a damn for asking if I have one, and how they respect it.

You know, I don't really mind the "do everything in our power to avoid civilian casualties" when it's mouth noises you make when your goal is to kill bad guys.

Hell, I don't mind hey let's kill as few civilians as possible in this mission being up there on the list of mission goals.

I mind when it becomes more important that killing bad guys.

Also Obama sure as hell doesn't seem to care about civilian deaths when he's droning people. With a drone. Not his voice. Though, hmm, I suppose my point holds either way.

300 I have not been either a supporter or a detractors of Trump from the very beginning. A couple of months ago, my niece who is totally non political made the case for Trump at a family gathering because she has worked for him and interacted with him, and had nothing but good things to say about him as a leader and a manager. Since then, I've looked beyond the circus show and read past interviews, watched old videos and listened to others who share that same experience. And now, not only do I like him, but am very glad he's the guy. I don't give a flying fig about his supposed gaffes. What is totally evident is that the media is foaming at the mouth about anything they can find or outright fabricate. Even on my local talk radio in Chicago it is a non stop Trash Trump fest. It's downright shocking how intense it is and yet not one word of concern about Hillary.

She is an embodiment of the GOPe problems that have driven the Trump phenomenon, namely promising the moon in an election year and then doing whatever the leftists want while telling the voters to get bent because there's no way they can grasp the 3D chess game they're playing. I would love to see her tossed out on her ass in November, but then that would mean we'd get Maggie Hassan as a senator. I don't really pay attention to state politics anymore, but I guarantee that as a liberal Democrat, Hassan would do 0% of what I want, as opposed to Ayotte's MAYBE 20%.

If Trump weren't running for President currently, then who gives a fuck if he endorses McCain? McCain sucks. I don't endorse McCain.

But it's not about principle. It's about trying to win from a losing position. He needs allies. So alienating, in particularly Ryan, a powerful party ally while already losing, is stupid.

Paul Ryan doesn't have to endorse Trump because Paul Ryan is winning comfortably. It's not so for Trump. He needs help and he's just pissing people off instead.

406 To go over it once again for you. You said it was annoying and boring to hear from the NeverTrumpers because to you it was nothing about purity. You will note I did not say, it was annoying and boring to hear you say that people have to vote for Trump over Hillary. You inferred that on your own.
Posted by: SH at August 04, 2016 05:08 PM (gmeXX)

Except. Except that's not what I said. In point of fact, I said the opposite of what you are claiming. I did, in fact, state that the pro Trump side was boring as well.

This is what I said:

"You see, I've had it up to above Bander's head with this necessity of people in each and every thread to go out of their way to make sure that everyone knows that they are SOOOOOOOOOO much purer in supporting conservative principles and thus telling us how awful Trump is and the countervailing response that prove that others are SOOOOOOOOOOO much purer in defeating Hillary and how any opposition to Trump is #NeverTrumptard nonsense.

Yeah. All of that is as annoying as it is boring."

There is not a word in what I typed about how it was nothing about purity to me. What I said, as evidenced by what I typed, was that it was equally boring to hear the purity claims from both sides.

How you got from the words I actually typed to saying it was annoying and boring to hear from the NeverTrumpers because to you it was nothing about purity is beyond me and is not supported by the words that I used.

Also, please note that the portion in which I stated that it was boring to hear the countervailing pro Trump responses precedes immediately the portion you quoted. So either you missed that somehow or decided to ignore that portion as it did not fit your view.

As far as your claim that you never put me in with that group, you were quoting me and responding to me which fairly reasonably means that you were including me in that group.

Posted by: sven10077 at August 04, 2016 05:30 PM (SzZnW)

Maybe.

Ryan came up with one of the best proposals out there for trying to get a handle on our situation with the burgeoning debt and exploding social maintenance costs without raising taxes too high, lowering benefits too much, or killing the economy. Dems took the chance to paint him as a guy pushing seniors in a wheelchair over a cliff. Was it a great plan? No, but it was a step towards realistically resolving the crisis, that might have been built upon. Trump has no interest in it, and in fact wants to spend twice what Herself wants to spend on an infrastructure spree.

Nehlen brought up the idea of removing all Muslims from the country today. Not just those who support ISIS, or want sharia, or even noncitizens- all of them.

A coalition has to have all kinds. Someone up top mentioned blue state republicans are needed as well. Ryan's not good on immigration, but he's smart, and coalitions need those guys, too.

427 @412: "The problem with Ryan's challenger is that he doesn't seem that bright."

For a politician, that should be a plus. Generally speaking, major fuck-ups come from supposedly smart types. Stupid people screw up, but they tend to do so small-scale.

429 @421: "What about the Supreme Court? Oh. That's right. I'm sure that Trump
will choose someone that most Democrats will support, so it doesn't
matter if he has Congress."

GOP Presidents blow as many Court picks as they get right, if not more. So the whole "But, but, but...the Court" argument is a very weak one.

436 John McCain?

Kind of the opposite of Alvin C York, but, whatever. Can't knock it. He got his money's worth, if that's what he wanted. I wish all of our vets, especially the severely injured vets, could never have money worries. Ever.

I thank him for his service and I gave him a fair shot by voting against Barack Obama. Sure as hell didn't vote for him. He was just so damned weak. Like Kwai Chang Cain or some weird shit. Too passive. Way too passive. Like he couldn't bring himself to bend a goddamned grass blade or some bullshit cuz he considered himself to be the greatest gentleman politician of all time. But a cast a ballot with his name on it. And that SUCKED.

He was a hero. Today? He's really just an idiot that couldn't sell gutters in storm destroyed neighborhoods. Thank God he married a fortune and cake walked his way through congress far enough to get Bonanza Pension in case the lady divorces his dumb ass and he gets jack shit. It is time for him to gratefully retire and shut the fuck up.

My friends, there's nothing to fear in firing a multi-millionaire war hero.

438 Good for Gov. Pence.

I am beyond sick and tired of electing career politicians who say one thing and DO NOTHING. For freaking years. Then, when election time is nigh (opposite of "neigh" which is what John Kerry says), they make their empty promises again. Rinse. Spit. Repeat.

Term limits is the answer. Then they might actually try to get some work done vs prancing around Georgetown parties and bloviating.

McCain. 'Nuff said in that one word.

Aoyette, after all of her swagger and patriotism and loyalty to military due to husband (I think this is the won), welp, another do gooder doin' nuthin.'

I hope they both lose. Clean house. Drain the sewer.

440 "Status Games: The very idea that Trump (or Pence) would endorse
McCain or Ayotte, while they refuse to reciprocate, is a variation of
the Status Claim Game I've seen the left pull on too many occasions to
list."

But in this case McCain DID endorse Trump, Trump's just mad that McCain didn't back him up on what assholes the Khan family were. Not sure about Ayotte, but Ryan had been backing Trump for months prior to his re-election race, and Trump decided he was still holding a grudge over Ryan's initial refusal.

This is what's so fucked up and disturbed about Trump's support: they keep trying to argue "tit for tat" without ever offering up the tit in the first place. The Trump people making frustrated demands at everyone but their candidate and talking about how they're so much tougher and more effective than those spineless nerds at NRO who are crying about not having influence, they can't be elitists. Would an elitist support an embarrassing candidate? No, so opposing an embarrassing candidate is elitist! But those effete nerds who read books and complain about rude people to their friends on twitter, they're the elitists! Because what other value could you possibly get out of arguing things on caution and learned principal besides the kind of widespread cultural prestige and adulation that comes inherently with being a writer on a low circulation political wonk publication?

We get shit like "Oh, well we held our noses and voted for your guys: Bush, McCain, and Romney! Now you won't pay us back?" No, fuck this argument! Plenty of Trump supporters were all in on those guys at the time, and plenty of NeverTrump people held their noses. DrewMTips was going after those guys way harder and earlier than anyone supporting Trump. Trump supporters on the internet were apoplectic after Cruz's refusal to endorse, certainly more dramatically so than Trump critics. Cruz's approval among Republicans halved in some polls, and possibly tanked the hopes of Cruz fans for 2020 or 2024, because how dare Cruz not endorse (obviously not Ace's position, but it was that of many pro-Trump people online)! Trump responded by bringing back the conspiracy theories about Cruz's dad killing JFK, and hinted at possibly funding super PACs to defeat disloyal Republicans in future races. Because, again, how dare he not endorse! Trump advocates can express their displeasure as they will on forums like FOX, because just like how blacks can't be racist, Trump supporters can't be elitists. But when beta Republicans with a more academic tone to their editorials express their displeasure online, that's elitism!

Everyone made a grudging acceptance of prior Republican presidential candidates on the terms as they were laid out then (and some refused, and sat out those elections). You don't get points for that shit, so that you get to then call on favors 8 years later from arbitrary demographics of Republican voters because you weren't happy about the guy you decided to vote for. Enough people agreed independently that those guys were tolerable enough to have a competitive level of party cohesion, including those who are now trying to claim "oh, we were being 'ridden' by elites that whole time, so it's our turn now!" You can't ret-con that into a sacrifice you made on our behalf.

If you were getting a raw deal at the time, it was one that you thought was worth it when it came time to pull the lever. This one, for some people, isn't. Trump can endorse or refuse to endorse whoever the hell he wants. Trump doesn't owe anyone an endorsement, but this is further affirmation that he offers no concessions of loyalty to Republican Trump skeptics who everyone (well, everyone arguing this case for Trump) seems to think he needs or deserves the support of. This is a constant bait and switch with Trump supporters: the case for the treatment Trump and his supporters deserve from media or from elected Republicans (who have to weigh his popularity in their own electoral regions against their behavior towards him, which most politicians who like their party to win understand) becomes the case for the treatment they deserve from all Republican voters and editorial writers. Those people decided to risk alienating Trump supporters (even though, at the very least, McCain and Ryan ultimately endorsed him), and Trump decided to further alienate, not just their supporters, but also skeptics who already saw him as unstable. Every one of them deserves to deal with the fallout. But Trump risks the most by doing so, and shows his disinterest in winning people over in the process.

This insistence that we always get to win comes only from Trump supporters. NRO writers seething about the things they don't like about their party on the internet is not the same thing by any means. They didn't seize anything from anyone, they built their platforms same as Drudge and Murdoch did theirs. It is deranged to construe their use of their influence as somehow more insidious than that of any other blogger, just because they disagree with people whose editorial positions aren't taken as seriously on college campuses. Outside of the superficial fact that they're smart, educated, and overly-mannered, what are they doing to subjugate competing political perspectives to their status that isn't also being done in dumb, poorly-educated, rude circles? That, in those contexts, we wouldn't just consider typical in group political spats? How is them disparaging Trump more of an elite power play than Limbaugh disparaging McCain for decades? What meaningful sort of elite are they that Ann Coulter isn't? This anti-elitist argument for Trump is a constructed fiction to replace the arguments that can't be made (at least, not with the effectiveness it needs to be made to make him competitive) for the superior benefits of a Trump presidency. The "you're an elitist for not supporting him" argument looks obviously shallow and pointless when re-applied to any other celebrity, for example if Ashley Judd or Jay-Z were the Democrat presidential nominee. It's even more astonishing when you consider that the one demographic Trump preforms kinda well in (whites with no college degree), he still under-performs relative to Mitt "Car Elevator" Romney.

441 Ryan can GFH. The only spending he ever worries himself about is SS, which amazingly, he always seems to lump together with Medicare as an entitlement.

Mr. Ryan loves handing out the benefits to immigrants following through on promises they've made to citizens that have continued to the system for 20 plus year So? Not, so much.

Screw Ryan, McCain, and their buddy McConnel. The KA-1 primary has me firmly in the LIB camp. Don't think I'm coming back across this time...

THW Robert's SCOTUS and Comey's precious FBI as well. Same goes for The media and their stupid polls. They can all GFT.
