10 So I see all the "fact checkers" are twisting themselves into knots to defend Mooch and her claim that the White House was built by slaves.

It would be funny if it weren't so sad. The thing that helps bind society together is an honest and shared history, and rewriting history to serve a political agenda is extremely destructive.

25 10 So I see all the "fact checkers" are twisting themselves into knots to defend Mooch and her claim that the White House was built by slaves.
_______________

It wasn't built by slaves. The original WH had some black slaves who worked as painters, but they were paid wages for their work by the U.S. government at the time, so they were not "slaves" as far as their work on the WH was concerned.

The original WH was burned by the British in the war of 1812. The WH was gutted and rebuilt during the Truman administration. That is the WH that Obama lives in. How many slaves does Michelle Obama think Truman had on the payroll?

The "I live in a house built by slaves" is almost as big a lie as Michelle's "I was a successful lawyer" lie.

26 The equine disease glanders has been largely wiped out. Except in Brasil. It's widely feared that taking Olympic horses there will result in a new world-wide outbreak. Brasilian authorities have responded to the threat by killing rather a lot of horses, of course. I'm not going for the metaphor here. I just kind of like horses.

Posted by: Stringer Davis at July 27, 2016 08:03 AM (tIja6)

27 Not surprising at all, but interesting the tone of the headlines out of the two conventions:

Trump delegate farts in public at convention floor. When will the horrors end?

Michelle Obama lifts the nation in flowing speech about how she, as a slave, singlehandedly built the White House. We're so luck to have her.

36 This much is true: the largest user of slave labor, throughout the era of slavery, was the federal government. They did it through contractors; until just recently the government did not actually own slaves.

The great brick fortresses of the southern coast were "specified" to be built by black laborers, as they were immune to yellow fever. Because, sickle cell, but I don't think they knew that yet.

It isn't 'the country' that Hillary voters want protected. Hillary voters are joining, and remain loyal to, the Clinton gang because those voters expect to benefit personally from their association with the Clinton gang. 'The Country' is a meaningless abstraction in their world view.

That statement alone shows he just doesn't get it and also believes the lie that conservatism isn't about helping people. No clue on the free market. It's so very disappointing, but what can we do. 81 Perhaps Mooch read that "White House was built by slaves" line in Howard Zinn's Commie "history."

It is entirely possible that some slave labor went into the original and post War of 1812 WH. In the book "Six Frigates", slaves were used to cut down the southern white oak. The owners of the slaves were paid the wages.
In "Uncle Tom's Cabin", one of the slaves worked in a factory and the owner received the wages.

Now I seriously doubt the slaves did any finish carpentry.

84 Btw, my earlier comment on Frankie Valli...luckily, someone was just making a joke in the ONT about old people. He wasn't there. After seeing him live a few months ago and hearing him voice his deep love for America and between-the-lines unhappiness with where we're headed, I would've been really surprised if he'd been there.

87 Odd how, when describing his love for his wife Hillary last night, Bill didn't mention his "energizer bunny" mistress who has been keeping his bed warm for the past several years. He also didn't give a shout out to Gennifer Flowers, Dolly Kyle, Sally Perdue, or any of his many other mistresses.

How is the fairy-tale story of his and Hillary's "loving marriage" complete without mentioning so many of the key players who helped keep them together all these years?

Union support for Trump may very well be the deciding factor in this race.

I'm not saying anything about what he said, or the advisability of raising the minimum wage. Just that he's whittling away at Clinton's numbers, day after day.

93 Stay home, watch her win and truly say goodbye to America?

I said my good-byes in 2012.

Back then, it was like America was a cancer patient who had been treated by a quack for the previous four years with holistic therapy, magnets, and coffee enemas. America had a chance to switch doctors, to a guy who wanted to use chemo and radiation therapy. But America said, "Well, I don't like this new doctor, I just can't relate to him. And besides, the old doctor is trying really hard, so I'm going to give him another chance."

That's when I said my goodbyes.

A lot of slaves were skilled craftsmen. They were valued, if not "treated," accordingly. He said there's a lot of hippies and anarchist kids around causing minor disruptions but things haven't been quite as bad as all had feared. He said what we're seeing on TV is mostly the protesters "turning it on" for the cameras. They don't start "protesting" till the red light goes on.

Interestingly, he said the talk he's hearing is that the protests INSIDE are far worse than are being reported. He knows people working the convention, so, inside dope...

lanned Parenthood has jumped on the entire "intersectionality" bandwagon. Well, if Planned Parent hood is good at anything, it's "dismantling", especially dismantling Black babies.

159 Re: Trump and the minimum wage.

Levin last night, without watching O'Reilly, said that Trump told O'Reilly that Republicans don't care, but he would raise the minimum wage.

This is a full out lie and I'm calling Levin and the posters here now that are parroting it on it.

Trump was responding to Bernie's lie at the DNC that Trump wants to reduce the minimum wage. Trump said several times, and even told O'Reilly to let him finish his comment, that minimum wage should be inidividually set by states, according to their own situation. O'Reilly kept on and on badgering him about what the Federal Minimum should be and Trump finally said he would like it to be $10, but again, the states should set it. O'Reilly started blathering on about how teenagers could be paid less, etc. and Trump talked about private companies paying incentives.

The only mention of Republican was when Trump was trying to answer about raising the minimum and he said that "It isn't very Republican to say this, but yes, in some states, the minimum wage should be raised".

You all can watch the interview for yourself. The discussion about minimum wage begins within the first two minutes.

NATO doesn't work if its enemies aren't 100% sure that all of its members (well, mainly the US) will honor its commitments in the case of an invasion. When a candidate says, "Well, we'll have to see if the check has come in" instead of "we will absolutely honor our commitments," it defeats the entire purpose of the incredibly important organization.

You want money? Negotiate privately, supposedly Trump's specialty.

By the way, the fact that the GOP has now pretty much given up on all spending cuts except as regards defense is another sign that Trump has turned it into The Other Democrats.

And, if I may be so bold, for us to be astute enough to recognize the shift in the entire political paradigm wherein the entire concept of our political beliefs being shoehorned into a (possibly) archaic structure of Right and Left, and adapting to that.

I could be wrong, but the current structure does more to divide us along somewhat arbitrary lines than it does to unite, or at least give us the opportunities to identify those ideals that we could unify under.

Just a thought.

185 $10/hr minimum wage? Not for it, and I wish he wasn't. It's that simple. Can't have it both ways-you can even out "free" trade by implementing tariffs, but we need to make it a more hospitable atmosphere for companies inside the United States. Trump, as a business owner, should know that.

I guess #imwithher now!

In all honesty he probably said this as an off the cuff remark to get more blue collar support that he can't or won't actually pursue (see Obama and Gitmo closing). Remember, Bismark gave social benefits to workers in the fledgling Germany in order to outflank the hard socialists and to call the shots on his terms rather than theirs. This took the wind out of their sales and I don't think anyone here would call Bismark a bleeding heart.

Now Hillary comes out and thinks NAFTA needs a second look? Who is calling the shots in this campaign? It sure as hell isn't the Democrats. Trump is throwing red meat to his base, which is not the American Enterprise Institute, unfortunately. But America has changed and we can't reset the clock to 1776 just by wishcasting. We wasted 28 years after Reagan where "conservative" principles could have been pursued. The Globalist Uniparty let us down, so now we have to fight the battle that faces us, not the one we want. I don't like it anymore than the next commenter, but that's where we are.

Thanks Jen, nice to cut through all the hysteria.

Based on what he said there aren't any real conservative rebuttals. He can feel however he wants about what the minimum wage should be, he wasn't dictating to the states. So now letting states make their own decisions is democrat-lite? Instead we should have the federal government step in a abolish minimum wage? Funny.

This is true. It's hard to get the truth out because the liberal narrative is so faulty in their quest to make UberVictims.

Ask a young college student to describe the typical day in the life of a slave. They will probably say that it starts with the slave being unchained and marched out to work in the fields for 16 hours. Then they are brought back to whipped and beaten within an inch of their lives for the amusement of the master.

Makes for good television.

Exactly. This is where the purity conservatives destroy themselves. They start nattering on about how the minimum wage destroy job opportunities, etc.
The federal minimum wage has been in place since the 1930's. It is not going to be abolished, the population will NEVER allow that to happen.

Reworking it so that it relates to current life and giving it lots of flexibility would be the smart thing to do. Allow individual states, municipalities, businesses, etc. the ability to adjust and determine what works best for their particular economy would be far more beneficial to business and labor than some blanket raise requiring everyone, everywhere to pay the same level.

This is what Trump was saying in his comments to O'Reilly. But the purity people would much rather we lost this election and continue to scream "free market" at the clouds instead of taking on reality and improving the situation for businesses and labor markets.

These same people love to talk about individual freedoms, but when someone on our side tries to do that within the existing framework so that a small change can be successfully made and progress toward much more freedom, they shriek and scream no no, we must destroy the entire framework first or it's not conservative enough.

They kill the person trying to make the change and then NOTHING gets done.

Minimum wage jobs are supposed to be for the young and inexperienced to gain experience, skills and pride in the work ethic. NOT a "living wage."

Many jobs and industries will obsolesce just as many more will be created as time and tech march on.

The PRINCIPLES of economics are as unchanging as the laws of nature. He'll win Ohio and PA and the rust belt by promising to do away with the EPA, OSHA etc. etc. and cut the corporate tax rate to incentivize job creation by the job creators.

Economic theory 101. Price goes up on a resource (workforce, raw material, etc.) and alternatives are searched for that are less expensive. The Socialists/Commies/Democrats (BIRM) think it is humane to jack the minimum wage up.Companies are going to look at that $15/hr worker (which actually costs almost double that with payroll taxes, bennies if offered, etc.) and begins looking to automate or outsource. Costs of finished goods goes up. Like your Dunkin Donuts Large Coffee @ 2.25? Is it still a bargain at $4? That is what will happen.Manufacturing is just starting to return to the USA. Will it ever be like it was? No. But it is starting to return. This means jobs. Make labor more expensive and it'll be another 20 years before we'll see that trend again.

I feel the same way about those promises - if Trump ever made them - that I did about Cruz promising to abolish the IRS.

Ain't. Gonna. Happen.

First, he'd have to issue an EO. Then, by the time EPA, OSHA, c got through slow-walking their disbanding and finished their appeals to the judiciary to stop the EOs - not to mention the 24/7 full-court MFM press about how evil and tyrannical Trump was - we'd be in year 4 of a Trump administration and, at most, one underperforming secretary in the EPA's goat-milk-inspection division would be placed on administrative leave. Without going full Pinochet, Trump would never be able to get rid of one single agency.

At this point, I only want two things from Trump:

1. Beat Hillary;
2. Jail Hillary.

The first may happen. I am fully convinced the second will not happen.

I don't think that is true. Most conservatives I know say that tongue in cheek as a joke to show that at least Putin loves Mother Russia while Fredo hates America and all it used to stand for. I don't speak for anyone but myself, but all conservatives I know recognize what Putin is and how dangerous both he and Russia are.

347 A distressingly large number of the alt-right types have a hard-on when they see Putin.

When your own government or "elites" are ineffective or even hostile, as they are now, that becomes a VERY distinct temptation. It's a warning to clean house and straighten out your act, not to ostracize those looking for alternatives (cf. Trump, Donald J.).

But alas, it seems the thing to do to double down on bad ideas, so of course it's impossible any of the legions of choices that led us into this mess can't possibly be re-examined, criticized, or found wanting, it's all in on attacking the alt-right rather than fixing the problems that led to it in the first place. Until that turns around, get used to 'em being around...and possibly gaining in strength.

Maybe I wasn't paying as close attention to the MSM as Jonah was, but I recall that pretty much every MSM outlet, you know those Lefty DNC mouthpieces, were working hard to "expose the true nature of the
Trump takeover." They covered so many of his speeches, interviewed him many, many times (part of Trump's strategy - accept every invitation and bump their ratings). In fact, I think they covered Trump so much so that Trump could make the case himself as to why he shouldn't be president (just let him keep talking to increase possibility of gaffe and/or outrageous statement).

Dear Jonah, it's not about character this time around, so "revealing" the true Trump was never gong to be the method for defeating him. You can hurl all the insults at me you want. The reality is that minimum wage is not going to be removed from the US labor laws in my or your lifetime.

And the Democrats want to raise it on everyone. They are currently doing it in individual states, and will continue to push for raising the federal minimum to Bernie's dream of $15 .

You would rather preen around citing how much you know about economics and how you refuse to raise the minimum wage because it's not conservative and anyone who tries to deal in the reality of the minimum wage is economically illiterate and stupid.

You're opinion and stand on this is no different than the Democrat liberals who refuse to do ANYTHING to help the solvency of Social Security. Can't talk about it, can't propose ideas, can't try to rework it, can't offer individual solutions.

Why? Because it's like a symbol to wear to show your conservative creds. Doesn't matter how ineffective and screwed up the program behind the symbol is, it's the idea of the symbol that matters.

399 395 It isn't that anyone particularly "like" Putin. I think it is a recognition that Putin gets it about fighting jihad whereas our current leaders do not. This idea that opposing Russia means disagreeing with Putin in all things is absurd. It is long past time that we work more closely with them on things in which we have a common interest.

414 >>It isn't that anyone particularly "like" Putin. I think it is a recognition that Putin gets it about fighting jihad whereas our current leaders do not.

And yet, Putin isn't at war with all of Islam either. Nobody was more eager to end the sanctions regime in Iran outside of Obama than Putin. He has been doing weapons and nuke deals with them before the ink was even dry on the deal.

He is also Assad's lifeline. Without his support Syria would likely have fallen long ago.

Bush was much more engaged with killing terrorists than Putin has ever been. He took out Saddam, got Qadaffi to give up his nukes, drove the Taliban and al Qaeda out of Afghanistan for the most part and on and on.

Putin may look tough but it's just in comparison to the quisling currently in office.

415 The 'true conservatives' remind me of a ditty that every boater learns at some point in time. I'll try to recite it from memory, but the point is that being out on the water is like life. There are no 20 foot wide highways with carefully delineated lines left and right. Common sense and caution rule. So, from memory...

Here lies the body of Michael O'Day
Who died maintaining his right of way
He was right, dead right, as he sailed along
But he's just as dead as if he'd been wrong
