Ghostbusters Falls Off 50% from Already-Disappointing Opening Weekend

Not terrific. Really not very good. Sad!

Sony’s Ghostbusters took a tumble on its second weekend. The $144 million comedy earned $21.6m (-53%) to give it a new $86.8m ten-day cume. That’s a sharp fall for a comedy, and dreams of a 3.8-4x multiplier are now out the window. It’s about on par with Pixels and The Boss. So now it’s a question of which of those two precedents matches up. It’s still looking like a cume of $135m-$150m by the time it’s done.

Um, compare to how the media reported on Pixels' box-office. The media hates Adam Sandler.

So they portrayed it as a box office bomb.

So if Ghostbusters -- with a much, much better known IP than Pixels -- is doing about as well as Pixels, is it not a bomb as well?

Or are we just not saying, because that would be anti-Woman?

Are facts now Anti-Woman?

Answer: Yes, of course they are, they always have been. Any fact a liberal doesn't like is "anti-[some member of the liberal coalition]."

23 I watched it yesterday. No I didn't pay for it, let's just say the version I saw wasn't quite 1080P.

It was bad. And it wasn't the wimmenz fault. The script and the directing were awful. All the humor was slapstick and gutter. Very little dry deadpan. There were occasional one liners that were worthy of a snort but few and far between. Then there were lines that would have been funny if they'd been delivered in a not so over the top way.

The last 30 minutes were awful, an action sequence with no tension or excitement. Can't really comment on CGI overall because like I said, didn't see a perfect version.

Final verdict would be 1.5\4. If it had been called "Scary Movie 7" it might have been worthy of a Friday night drinking movie (that's how stupid the vast majority of the jokes were) but ultimately it's called "Ghostbusters" and not worthy of that title.

Therefore, we have issued an interpretation under Title IX requiring every male college student in the United States to go see the movie during its theatrical run on penalty of conviction of rape and expulsion from college.

They do? Why? I mean, I can't stand him myself. Not for anything personal, he just is extremely annoying and untalented as a "comedian" and an "actor". But, the media never agrees with my sensibilities, and bad acting has never been a reason for them to dislike one of Hollywood's properties. So, why does the media hate him?

Long way. Remember the BO numbers are gross, not studio net.

The studio take for overseas showings is minimal. The overseas theaters and distributes get to keep most of it. And domestically, the studio takes the biggest cut in the first couple of weeks, and after that the theaters get a greater percentage.

Looks like the cost/net on this is going to be about the same as the Green Lantern movie.

After I commented, I looked him up. He is described as a right-winger based on the following:
1. pro Israel
2. Gave $2100 to Rudy Giuliani in 2008
3. Spoke at the 2004 GOP convention
4. Registered Republican

Other than being publicly pro-Israel, I haven't turned up much in the way of actual opinions on any specific issues. Also, he's Jewish. Nothing wrong with that, but it isn't all that unusual for American Jews to be pro-Israel. But, being pro-Israel doesn't usually get them described as right-wing. They can be pro-Israel and still be loved by the media. Natalie Portman is pro-Israel and I haven't heard anyone calling her a right-winger.

And really, giving money to Rudy Giuliani makes you a right-winger? I suppose compared to the rest of Hollywood it's something.

Back in the olden days, we never saw any movie on opening day. That was back in the time when boxes of film had to be shipped on buses, and we didn't even have a bus stop. The theater owner had to drive to the next town over to pick up, and send back, his movie reels. We wouldn't see the movie until after it stopped playing everywhere else.

Posted by: josephistan at July 25, 2016 07:18 PM (7qAYi)

Actually it wasn't money sitting on the table. Now sure it may have been cinema money. But merchandising-wise Cars 2 was better for them to go with.

See WZ. Hank "Tip--Guam-Over" Johnson says Jewish settlers are like termites.

"There has been a steady [stream], almost like termites can get into a residence and eat before you know that you've been eaten up and you fall in on yourself, there has been settlement activity that has marched forward with impunity and at an ever increasing rate to the point where it has become alarming,"

188 Muck like this nagging headache I can't seem to get rid of, the female Ghostbusters is not funny, however, it's girl-power symbolism is worth the price of admission. Seeing women do things, like math and such, is fascinating and inspiring, but not funny in any way. The black dude in the movie doesn't have much to do in the flick, and is also not funny, but it's a job for a minority that Hollywood hates to dole out. So go see it, just don't be prepared to laugh, or smile.

190 Keep in mind that Pixar has, hands down, the greatest movie trilogy of all time: "Toy Story". Not only the greatest one, but the only good one, really. (Spare me, "Star Wars" freaks, with your ewoks.)

So, yeah, they can do it. Will they? I don't know. Lasseter is stretched pretty thin these days: Disney quality has gone up, but Pixar's has gone down.

192 >>"London Has Fallen".

We saw that in the theaters - loved the unapologetic, cheesy lines delivered by Butler, especially this exchange:

Butler and jihadi exchange threats via captured jihadis radio. Buttler then gruesomely stabs the captured jihadi as his brother listens on the other end of the radio.

Butler: something like "I'll be meeting you soon!" to the jihadi, then ends talk.

President: "Was that necessary?"

Butler: "No"

(America, f#ck yeah! Do not mess with us)

212 Saw it. 3 out of 10. Chuckled exactly twice but I can't even remember which jokes I chuckled at. I really can't point to one performance that worked.

Jones was the same big sassy black woman we've seen dozens of times before. McCarthy was playing McCarthy. Wiig was playing Wiig. McKinnon was...I honestly don't know what the hell McKinnon was doing. It was like she was in an old episode of Pee Wee's Playhouse. You'd have to pay me $100 to watch that piece of shit again.

Unbelievable characters were a real problem. No one outside of a vegetative state is as stupid as Chris Hemsworth's character. There has to be at least a modicum of believability. For instance, Wiig's character being so starved for male attention that she acts like a complete gibbering idiot around Hemsworth.

For one, Kristen Wiig is a very attractive woman. Maybe not Hollywood hot, but definitely real life hot. She would certainly be the most fetching thing in the teacher's lounge at that college her character was working at. It strains credulity that she couldn't attract someone. Secondly, I doubt someone of her intellectual prowess would be attracted to a functional retard like Kevin. It would have made more sense for McCarthy to slobber over him.

It's also not believable how all the girls took a protective attitude over Kevin at the end. "Don't you mess with Kevin!" At that point they'd known him for like three days! They gave us zero scenes to show us how the girls began to feel affection for him. Show don't tell!

213 BTW, apropos of some comments upthread, yes, the Wonder Woman trailer will blow you away. I'm a sucker for the World War 1 period anyway, it looks fantastic. And Gal Gadot, the chick playing Wonder Woman is impossibly gorgeous.

Posted by: Lamont Cranston at July 25, 2016 07:51 PM (fp0Sr)

214 I can clearly see the movie Brad Bird wanted to make in Tomorrowland. Editors and focus group happy endings ruined it. Ruined. It.

Posted by: blaster at July 25, 2016 07:57 PM (2Ocf1)

215 Saw Star Trek Beyond. They threw in a new character (female) who was a badass (really to that 'OK, come on now' level that they must do with tough girl good-guys vs mooks twice their body weight), and who was more funny at points than anything from the Ghostbusters trailer. And without having to shove it in our face that 'grrlz rule, men drool'. But, you know, she was alien, and Kirk was still the lead, so it doesn't count. (Oh, and she didn't tumble for Kirk, which Is kind of a rarity for Trek. But Melissa McCarthy making loud noise is the empowering character, hmmm?)

Posted by: moronhordeminion at July 25, 2016 08:07 PM (TuRs5)

216 Brad Bird's ouevre includes a whole shit-ton of "Simpsons"-before-it-sucked, with four great features as a follow-up ("Iron Giant", "Incredibles", "Ratatouille", "MI: Ghost Protocol"). We can hope he shakes off the Clooney.
