Monday Moron Medical Monitoring

Quick explanation of so-called "Bulletproof Coffee:"

The coffee was popularlized -- and I guess invented -- by David Asprey, author of "The Bulletproof Executive." Here's his video about it.

He makes various claims about the coffee which strike me as ludicrous -- he says his !Q has gone up 20 points on the coffee --- but there is one big part of the coffee that seems solidly-based.

The coffee recipe is just two tablespoons of grass-fed unsalted butter (Kerrygold has one of the most widely distributed of such butters; look for the silver label for unsalted (gold is salted)), and some medium-chain triglyceride oil, available from Amazon in various forms. I use coconut oil, but not for any particular reason. (SEE UPDATE.)

I also put a lot of Saigon cinnamon in mine, plus non-sugar sweetener (stevia for me -- I don't taste the bad taste many object to).

The point of the coffee for those doing Intermittent fasting and/or Low Carb High Fat is that you're actually having a small meal, composed of almost 100% fat, but this meal does not produce any insulin response, as fat doesn't trigger an insulin release.

So, as far as intermittent fasting, even though you actually are breaking your fast with a shot of calories and fat, you're not breaking your fast as regards the hormone you actually care about -- insulin. No insulin is being raised, so as far as your insulin metabolism knows, you're still in your fasted state.

Yet you're getting some calories, which will make it easier for you to hit the 16 (or 18, or 20) hour mark without eating.

If you're doing Low Carb High Fat, you just swapped out one meal for a small meal that's 100% dietary fat, so that helps you on LCHF ratios.

Remember, don't just replace carbs with protein. At some point your body will figure out the trick you're pulling on it and start burning protein for glucose (and producing the insulin response). Eat more protein, but not too much more. You want to swap the carbs for fat, not a ton of extra protein.

People add the cinnamon because it's a natural stimulant that adds to the kick of caffeine and also, I think, is supposed to have some additional fat-burning effect beyond the simple metabolism-boosting effect. I kinda doubt that though. But we have a doctor who prescribes cinnamon capsules to patients, so maybe he can elucidate on that for us.

Since I've been adding cinnamon I've gone from two cups of coffee in the morning to just one, which is good for me, because too much caffeine makes me jittery and trips my anxiety switches.

Now, I know people whom make their coffee with heavy whipping cream, which is also 100% fat (or nearly so). So the question arises: Why have your coffee with weirdo creamer like butter and coconut oil, when you could get the same basic metabolic effect from heavy whipping cream?

I have no idea why you wouldn't do that. I think Asprey just popularlized this butter-and-oil recipe (he claims that he drank tea with yak butter in the Himalayas and it endowed him with superior performance in all ways) and so this is what I'm doing. I don't see how the heavy whipping cream version would be inferior for IF or LCHF purposes.

I would say this, though: Butter keeps a long time. That means you pretty much always have creamer in the morning, and never have one of those oh-no-I'm-out-of-creamer-and-didn't-go-to-the-supermarket-last-night black coffee mornings. So even if you're going the whipping cream route, maybe just have a stick of unsalted butter in there. Just in case.

Okay so here are my accountability stats: Had another lame week of weight loss. I dropped through the 187 resistance point Friday, down to 185.5, but have lost nothing since then. I actually I gained slightly -- 185.7.

Still, 20 pounds down from two months ago, or around then. Maybe two and a half.

The last time I lost weight I was losing 3-4 pounds per week many weeks, but I was doing something else then too: Walking at a hard pace for 40-50 minutes, 4 times a week. I haven't been doing that. I might have to start doing that again, especially now that my shoulder's got me out of commission for weightlifting.

So: How are all of you doing?

PS: Broseidon King asked if he could post his lift figures here. Of course you can/should. Any medical/health/exercise goal can be posted here. It's not just weight loss.

If you want to talk about your GAINS, BRO, then talk about your GAINS, BRO~!

Oh: Last time people were debating the best way to drink two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar (which might reduce insulin, especially at night -- though this is unproven).

I've been having it in coffee cups with cold water and ice and stevia. The water cuts the vinegar, obviously, but it's still a small enough amount to drink that you can power it down in a (not terribly pleasant) minute.

A coffee cup, especially a big coffee cup, seems to me to be the right compromise between cutting the vinegar and yet not making so much liquid it's hard to get down.

A Note on Adding MCT Oil to Your Coffee: Remember when I pooped my pants a few months ago?

Yeah, that was from MCT oil. You sort of have to add it slowly, to get your body used to it. It gets things moving smoothly out of your body -- a little too smoothly if you start with loads of MCT oil.

10 If any of y'alls live in the SF Bay Area, Philz Coffee is the only coffee chain in the country that uses some kind of hyper-fat whipping-cream cream that's supposed to be only used by pastry chefs in specific recipes. Philz instead puts it into coffee and the result is spectacular -- by far the best coffee you've ever had. So it confirms Ace's theory about using heavy cream in your coffee instead of butter, which i just unnecessary. The Philz way is also 100% fat but also 100% delicioous.

The hard part? Getting your hands on the ultra-heavy cream stuff. Not generally sold to retail customers. Otherwise, you'll have to get your coffee at the Philz location.

12 I've lost about 8 lbs recently doing "high fat-protein/low carb - intermittent fasting" diet.

The "intermittent fasting" means just skipping meals from time to time. And I do drink plenty of nice black coffee.

As to "super coffee" (or whatever the hell they call coffee with butter). . .I've tried it, and IMO its revolting. If you like it, all the more power to you, and if it helps you reach your weight/fitness goals, double that, but I'm not drinking that swill.

25 I think the reason Asprey recommends butter is because it's hard to get "high quality" cream. Kerrygold comes from grass-fed cows and you are going to have a hard time finding cream that comes with that benefit (and don't get started on the raw v. pasteurized dairy debate).

Highly recommended:

Dry hard cider.

Really really tasty (if you get the good stuff), and all the sugar has been converted to alcohol, so it's not as fattening.

Go for British or French ciders, or high-end American ciders (especially from Vermont, Michigan and Oregon). Stay away from the horrible mass-produced corporate stuff, like Angry Orchard or Redd's, both of which are horrible.

30 I started intermittent fasting pretty much as soon as I saw the video about it in the original post. I've been doing it for about two weeks and lost about five pounds, which I will TOTALLY take. I'm keeping it up; it's hardest on the weekends.

At my heaviest I was 422. When I started IF I was 403 and now I'm 397. I feel it's really working and it makes sense why it would.

I'm someone who tried dieting the "right" way years ago and lost a lot of weight, only to immediately gain it all back when I stopped losing weight and just couldn't stand eating 1800 calories a day any more. I feel like IF might be my ticket back to a healthy weight.

Manufacturing Cream is cream with a fat content at or above 40% (most
heavy cream sold in grocery stores tops out at around 36% percent fat).

This higher fat content gives the cream better flavor, a smoother
texture, a lower risk of curdling or burning, and more stability when
whipped or churned.Because of this,it is usually free from the
artificial stablizers often added to lighter creams.

37 2nd week of the Slow-Carb diet (Tim Ferris - 4 Hour Body) and down 5 lbs.

I am doing a fairly heavy weightlifting program, so I suspect I won't lose near as much total weight as most. Losing fat is my main goal and we'll see how it goes.

I am trying to Intermittent fast the day after my cheat day and did that for the first time yesterday. Made it to 18 hrs, but was not pleasant.

I'm an airline pilot that flies mainly long-haul international routes, so sticking to this diet on the road may prove to be a struggle. There are usually good options in US airports, but once you're in the metal tube for 12 hours all bets are off. Not to mention trying to stick to the plan when overseas.

I've had the last couple of weeks off, but start flying again on Friday. Need to do some research on what to pack with me for the flight.

38 When I did Atkins I found that I really got to where I craved carbs no matter how much protein or fat in any form into my belly. I would get to the point where my mouth would water at the thought of two slices of white bread and any amount of bacon and or any kind of cheese would sate my appetite.

I tried the low carb tortillas but they tasted like sawdust, and anything I would eat with them tasted like I was wasting good food by throwing sawdust on it.

One of the more satisfying foods that gave me a change from the meat/cheese/eggs/bacon sameness was cashews. They had a crunchiness and a texture not found in the other low carb fare. For variety I would eat pecans and filberts. If I was just looking for texture and not taste I would eat peanuts, but those quickly bored my palate.

Can anyone recommend a low carb bread substitute with the "mouth-feel" of bread? Extra points if it can be used in the same way as bread to make a sammich.

49 Thanks for the thread, Ace.

I'm two weeks into IF and so far, so good. I, uh, lost my scale back home. Honestly, don't know where it is. But I feel a little better and I haven't noticed any drop off in energy.

I do end up with a dry mouth during fasting, which results in a lot more water consumed, which in turn helps keep hunger pangs away. Apart from water, I eat two gummy vitamins (don't judge) at 15 cal total and add some 0 calorie 'Talking Rain Fusion' water, provided at work for some non-water flavored drinking. The stuff is also caffeine-laced, so bonus there, I think.

I'm also doing very light exercise in the morning. 20 pushups, 20 air squats, 20 leg lifts. My plan is to increment by one each day, so I should be up to 27 of each next Monday. I also have a barbell for when I want to add curls, overhead press and weight to squats.

I should note that I'm not really changing my diet. I still drink pop, eat brownies and lovely, lovely carbs....just only from noon to eight.

52 The secret to losing weight is to eat what you like in moderation and exercise. Ace you are right about the walk in the morning. When I retired I did a 2 mile power walk every morning usually done between 25 and 30 min. And most of the time I limited myself to 2,000 cal per day. I was able to lose weight under that regime.

But then I had a heart attack and quit smoking. After that I was hungry all the time. The cancer hit and the neuropathy in my hands and feet hit and it became painful to walk. Since then I have ballooned to 196 pounds.

53 Based on this being weekly Monday thread I have moved my weigh-in day from Friday to Monday but that was after I already weighed on Friday. I was disappointed to find that this morning I was actually up a pound from Friday, which I did not expect. I know that I'm trimming down though because my tshirts are loosening up and this morning after I showered I was actually able to wrap the towel around my waist and get enough of a tuck for it to stay there. That is improvement for me. I have also moved one notch tighter on the belt.

I suppose the one pound weight gain over the weekend could be from building muscle as I burn fat but....I dunno, I have not added any new physical activity to my routine yet. Do you build muscle doing LCHF + IF without adding in exercise?

Despite the disappointment of the scale moving the wrong direction this morning I feel good about where I stand with this. I have been very disciplined about eating minimal carbs, fasting for 15+ hours daily, and increasing my fat intake. I can keep a towel around my waist now, have tightened up a belt notch, and my knees don't scream bloody murder at me every time I stand up. Those are all huge improvements for me.

55 #23.

Ace, you're way more serious about this "intermittent fasting" thing than I am. For me this was mostly accidental. . .did try to cut out carbs, though moved recently and change in commute and working patterns is mostly responsible. By coincidence, happened right about the time you did your intermittent fasting post.

Went from 186# to 177# in 6-7 weeks and it was fairly effortless (FWIW, I'm just shy of 5'11", so its not like I was starting from a place of "super fat"). Tried the buttered coffee when the "supercoffee" idea first got attention. If I were trying a more deliberate diet, I'd definitely think about something like that, though maybe not buttered coffee.

56 Coffee is a key component of this for me. My regular weekday routine is now: Coffee with heavy cream, about 30 ounces, in the morning. No sugar -- that's new for me. i thought about an artificial sweetener, but I know too many fat people who drink diet Coke.

Then an essentially zero-carb lunch; and nothing else for the rest of the day. I've lost about 3.5 pounds in a week. I'll probably taper a bit, but that's cool, I'll be down to something trim for me (185 or so) in 5 or 6 weeks.

It's easier to remember to take two pills in the evening than to try and get cinnamon in the morning, since I don't drink coffee or even tea until lunch.

I leave my job at the end of the week, and move out for grad school, so I may be able to adjust how I do things later, but I found myself looking for excuses to "start next week" and so just taking the capsules in the evening was about forcing me to start now.

Not sure if it has been mentioned yet, but I have listened to Mr. Asprey and his dietary advice. I think that adding MCT oil to coffee is a great addition and really helps with hunger control, but is there any confirmation on milk/cream affecting the anti-oxidant qualities of foods or drinks?

Can't really build muscle while trying to lose weight, gotta do one or the other.

Either way lift in both scenarios, once you've hit a desirable weight, then start bulking up by eating more.

65 I'm currently doing Maffetone: The premise is you exercise aerobically at a low heart-rate (basically 180-your age), and at the end of your workout you should have no pain and feel like you could do it again, right away, easily.

It's all endurance. There's no anaerobic stuff allowed until you're in decent aerobic condition. (He's the anti-Rippetoe!) Maffetone even casts aspersions as to whether anaerobic exercise has any value whatsoever.

This is: a) completely the opposite of the current CW; b) totally against my nature.

So, that's why I'm doing it.

I started with a 1K warmup, 1K "run" (I can't go faster than my heart rate will allow), 1/2 K cool down. I started week three yesterday and did 1K warmup, 4K "run", 1K cooldown.

We'll see how it plays out.

No weight this week because I use the Wii to weigh and I'm hacking it to get around the whole scratched-CD problems. But my pants are looser.

Currently on hour 25 of a planned 48-hour fast. It's going fine.

66 >>>Not sure if it has been mentioned yet, but I have listened to Mr. Asprey and his dietary advice. One of his stated reasons for no Dairy in coffee is that the lactose "neutralizes" the anti-oxidant qualities of coffee. I am a bit skeptical about this and attribute it to his "Milk is the debil!!1!" attitude. I think that adding MCT oil to coffee is a great addition and really helps with hunger control, but is there any confirmation on milk/cream affecting the anti-oxidant qualities of foods or drinks?

I don't. I didn't read Asprey's book. I'm not sure if I will.

Seriously, green tea out, green (ie unroasted) COFFEE in. That's what they're pushing at the health food stores this month.

FWIW, green coffee beans are cheap, readily available, and disgusting. If you want this, just buy a few pounds of unroasted coffee, rather than paying some exhorbitant amount to a third party for the same.

Not sure what benefits this is supposed to offer over traditional roasted coffee (which makes a pretty tasty beverage), but I'm sure some tout some.

77 I've been on a summer shape-up program, but Ace's IF post really turbocharged it. I read Jason Fung (MD)'s book "The Obesity Code" and incorporated 24-32 hour fasts (usually about 30, I start fasting after dinner on, say, a Sunday and then have a small, nutritious meal to break it about an hour before sleep Monday).

Age 51, Male. Weight: 191, down 1.5 lbs for week, 14 pounds since my "Summer Shape Up" began on Memorial Day.

Consecutive pushups: 25 (+4 from last week!)
Dips: 5 (+1)
Pullups: .25 (I cheated like hell but damn if I didn't get my chin over the bar for the first time this summer). I tested myself in the same fasted state I did last week. Maybe next week I can do a pullup without cheating.

I take the dog for long walks, swim laps, do some strength training with bodyweight, bands, and freeweights. Sex with spouse: AWESOME! We're talking mahogany. Teak. Me and the overweight rescuemutt do windsprints once a week too (the dog is on a summer shape-up too, whether he likes it or not).

Only asterisk should for the week is that yesterday I took my son to the special TCM showing of "Planet of the Apes" (look for the Dr. Zaius comedy interview with Ben Mankiewicz online, it's pretty funny if you like the movies) and I went rather nuts: had a large Coke, Milk Duds, and lots of popcorn. Weirdly, I didn't get a "sugar rush/letdown" from the Coca-Cola and Milk Duds. I think my muscles/liver ate all the carbs.

As has been the experience of many, when I started lifting I gained weight (only a teeny bit) but also lost body fat, so even though there wasn't a big change in weight, there was a noticeable difference in appearance.

80 Oh, lactic acid-wise, an interesting thing about Maffetone:

I've been running off-and-on for years now and it's always hurt. Calves, achilles tendons in particular. I interpreted this as muscular, but my calves were plenty strong from lifting.

If I run at that low heart-rate (180-age), I don't get the pain at all. So...the pain may have been an inability of the cardio-vascular system to evacuate the lactic acid? Dunno. If you have that kind of issue, it might be worthwhile to check out working at a lower heart rate.

82 I started this with the post where you lost 14 pounds. Read all of Jason Fung's blog. It makes perfect sense as a medically oriented thinker. The fasting was easier than I expected. I did 16 hours with the 8 hour window. Started on a weekend. It took me two weeks for results. And then, I didn't drop much...3 pounds. Perhaps because I was already fairly low carb, but not necessarily high fat. Tweaking and not much going on. Perhaps menopause being fairly recent plays a role?
I am a coffee w cream drinker and I still only have one cup in am. I I've got a good fasting schedule with lots of water or all natural carbonated h20. I don't feel tired nor do I lack energy. Gonna keep going with it...

90 And I tried two recipes this weekend that worked well -- first, this "bread":

http://www.dietdoctor.com/recipes/keto-garlic-bread

I don't like garlic, so I skipped that part of it. This is a very satisfying recipe. I've found that the ritual of a prep, and the look and feel of things, is critical to finding satisfaction with foods. This recipe, that uses almond flour, gives you a nice sticky bouncy dough. And you get myriad wonderful little air pockets, just like real bread, but by combining baking powder and vinegar in the mix, rather than with yeast.

You can make about 10 good-size rolls with the recipe, and warm these in the oven later. You can cut them in half and use them as english muffins; they'd probably make good hamburger buns too. It's not bread, but it's close enough for me. Great with butter, and great for dipping into:

Clam chowder:

https://www.verywell.com/low-carb-clam-chowder-2242410

This is a really good clam chowder. I added extra clams, a little extra celery and celery salt, used straight heavy cream (no milk), and a few dashes of hot sauce. I used coconut flour for thickener. It's not the thickest chowder I've ever had or made, but it has a great flavor, as much flavor as any I've had. I think the coconut flour really helps with the flavor.

92 Ace--

The funny thing about fasting is that when I first started putting on the pounds (back in the '90s) I would fast for days at a time. My record, I think, was four.

The interesting thing to me was that I would start to look better. My skin (which has never been great) would sort of start to glow, and I'd get compliments on it.

I didn't pursue it though, because Everyone Knows Fasting Is Bad.

It gets easier, just like the short fasts, by the way. At a certain point, you actually get a near revulsion of eating.

What DO you eat during those 4-6 hours that you're actually eating? protien/salads/good fats? Can you provide an example?

i'm pretty strict. Just protein and fat, mostly. Meat and low-car veggies.

I get extra fat wherever I can. Like, if i get cobb salad for dinner, I pay to get extra avocado and extra eggs. (The yolks have lots of fat.)

I also try to get broccoli whenever I can, becasue broccoli supposedly has something in it that interferes with an enzyme in your body that turns testosterone to estrogen. So, if you can knock out this enzyme, you increase your net testosterone.

It makes it enjoyable to eat broccoli when you're saying to yourself "This is boosting my testosterone, this is boosting my testosterone."

(Which is important for women as well: In both sexes, estrogen causes fat accumulation, and testosterone causes fat burning and muscle growth.)

When I do a fat fast I just get a tub of sour cream, a thing of onion soup powder, and make onino dip. Then I stick broccoli florets in it.

I try to get salmon frequently. I do a bagel-with-out-the-bagel meal with salmon, cream cheese, onion and tomato. A lot of fat there, and good protein with Omega 3's.

I come back to bacon and eggs a lot. cheap, and very good for you. Sometimes I make extra eggs and just have the yolks.

No but my doctor did say that we could try some drug that may help. I am already taking a tray full of drugs in the morning and evening for the heart and BP. And my oncologist had previously told me that if it did not go away after 6 months it would never go away and there was nothing you could do about it. So I declined. It has been years now and it has not gone away.

122 I have a question about IF

Do you get hungrier during fasting as your percent of body fat decreases?
It would seem logical to me that the less fat you have to burn, the quicker your body gets to hunger.

Anyone know how exactly the body decides which fat to burn?

132 >>>Anyone know how exactly the body decides which fat to burn?

I have a partial answer to that. The most dangerous fat in your body is visceral fat, the fat that accumulates around your midsection and I think even between your organs.

The accumulation of this fat is what gives people beer bellies, where their abdomen gets very thick, with the fat seeming to be inside, rather than outside in blubber.

That's the deadliest kind of fat there is.

The good news is it's the most metabolically active fat there is. So when you burn fat, you burn that type of fat preferentially.

so that's good

134 #62: Can't really build muscle while trying to lose weight, gotta do one or the other.

----------------------

I'm not trying to build muscle right now. Just trying to figure out what would account for having gone up a pound over the weekend when I've been pretty disciplined about LCHF/IF. Yesterday for example I didn't eat anything at all until 4:30pm when I ate a piece of cheese to tide me over til dinner. Then for dinner I had a salad with Alaskan crab, some high fat cheese crumbled in there, and some olive oil and melted butter drizzled on. I should not be gaining any fat right now so thinking that a pound up over the weekend might be muscle.

147 I've been trying 18 hour intermittent fasting for a couple of weeks now, and it seems to be working very well. I don't weigh myself much, the differences are too frustrating, and I'm too uncaffeinated in the morning to do it then, when it would be consistent, but it's pretty clear from clothing etc that something is happening, and with remarkable speed. I thought it would be really hard to cut out all the snacking between meals, but it wasn't too bad. Hunger pangs come, but just now and then.

Kind of surprised how straightforward it seems, and how obvious, once you start thinking of your body needing some hours to come down off the insulin, and how only then it start using up your glycogen and then fat, so why not give it as long as possible in that mode?

I was in CA at the time, and I begged him to drop Atkins and go to a real cardiologist since his condition was even apparent to me on the phone.

He survived that day, but the damage was done and he died a few months later.

152 If you binge, fret not.

The fear of binging is, IMO, part of the "calorie in/calorie out" mindset. "If I eat X calories, I must burn Y calories."

First, if that were true, the human body would be the ideal machine, because no engine burns 100% of the fuel it takes in.

Second, if you're basically doing the Right Stuff, an occasional binge will not hurt you. That's the premise behind "cheat meal". But even if you can't (like a lot of us) do a cheat meal because of what it leads to (constant cheating), you can not get hung up on the occasional binge.

I once binged (with malice aforethought) on my birthday weekend and gained 13 pounds in four days. One week later, I had lost 12 of those pounds. And, no, I didn't burn up an excess 36K+ calories that week.

I'll leave it as an exercise for the reader as to where those other 12 pounds went.

It was a function of his body having to work harder to pull in enough oxygen to function normally. That's why a lot of athletes prefer to train at high altitudes if possible. 204 Long time runner who stopped 1.5 years ago due to progressively deteriorating knees (arthritis in both knees).

I got a synvisc injection (viscous liquid made from rooster combs) in right knee one week ago. Left had a cortisone shot and is scheduled for synvisc in another 2 weeks. Clinical studies do not look great, but I have 4 soccer friends who swore by it, so I gave it a try.

Results so far: I am walking about normally (decent improvement). I am now descending stairs (my hardest task) much closer to normal.

Running feels noticeably better. It remains decidedly less comfortable than it did before my knee issues began but a fair amount of improvement. Previously, my normal was not ever having a thought about my knees. Never felt them. So now I feel them and there is some discomfort, but it is a good deal improved. I'd say moderate improvement. More than a little, but not a giant or complete cure. Its enough to make me pretty excited though.

My doctor believes it may slow down the decline, though he stresses that this aspect of synvisc has never been tested and due to the costs of such a study, its not likely to be tested for this.

I should note that I am running against doctor's orders. But it feels a lot better running.

I would think a very weak solution of ipecac could curb hunger quite effectively. Full strength and you vomit instantly, diluted to X percent and you just get nauseous but dilute to ? percent and it could theoretically be enough to make you not hungry without feeling ill.

The key. THE KEY. For me, at first that equated to about 460 cals for a one hour, 4MPH walk. 10 months later, after a loss of 50+ lbs, I'm up to 6 miles over hilly terrain, about 650 cals. About 15 lbs to go.

212 I drink switchels everyday. Ok, it's a sort of a switchel. I buy the real lemon lemonade/limeade packets. I use one packet of limeade/lemonade, an ounce or two of raw apple cider vinegar, slice of fresh ginger, ice, and water in a 30oz. Yeti tumbler. It's pretty tasty actually and super simple to make daily.

I do a 20oz glass of cold brewed coffee with heavy cream every morning. I may try to add cinnamon. The local grocery chain, HEB, has its house brand of Central Market heavy cream. I swear the cream is thicker and richer than any of the other heavy creams I've tried. I don't even need any type of sweetener anymore.

218 -running pain: any chance you've got inflamed tendons? I had a weird situation with severe pain *only* when I had my legs massaged. Never hurt running or walking, but it was bad enough I saw a doctor, and ended up getting orthotics and physical therapy and lo! The pain is GONE. I was kinda asymptomatic, but the PT said she'd had another client with the same situation--a male ballet dancer. Also, changing shoes as soon as they lose their support. Expensive, but being pain-free is worth it.

-Crohn's: Mine disappeared after I started doing higher protein with weightlifting (which pushed out carbs...) and I didn't even realize what had done it. I now no longer have any symptoms, flare-ups, and no meds for years. Low carb is worth it just for that alone.

Trying the IF. For some reason I thought I would be foggy in the morning skipping breakfast, but other than wanting to chew on the doorframe I function just fine. I don't like coffee, but I may try the chai with heavy cream deal.

Goals: I want to be able to do 20 regular pushups at a quick tempo, and one full, no-cheat pullup. There. I have confessed to the Moron Nation, may Ghu have mercy on my soul.

This has been my birthday week so i have been eating any dumb thing i please and i find i miss my diet foods and the structure of my meal schedule (intermittent fasting isnt hard for me.) so happily i am back on my diet this monday.

hilariously Bebes Boobs Destroy brought be Ahi poke for my birthday present, so i am eating that today as my protein.

Instead of straight coconut oil i take Nutiva coconut mana as a fat/fiber/ small amount of carbs source. its very nice in terms of taste and texture and this helps with maintaining my program, especially when i am hungry and i want something. Very little makes hunger pangs go away.

also i have had great results using Armor V immune support vitamins from Muscle Pharm, and Met-Rx BCAA 2200, which is a branch chain amino acid with a bunch of B vitamins like B6 to make it all work better. i take biotin on top of that to help the BCAA burn fat and the farrier would say grow hoof and hair... had great results so far. i was a 45 yo woman on a 1200 cal a day diet but it wasnt till i went on a strict schedule and started the supplements as well that it was working for me. I was not as tremendously active as i used to be due to a really bad back injury and every time they injected me with cortisone i gain 10 lbs. My objective is to take it off and keep it off, while increasing my physical activity as the back will allow. It was hilarious watching my farrier and i compare back exercises and rehab routines when we used to talk crossfit. *Sigh* getting old as horsemen sucks... i remember when i thought the spinal fracture didnt bother me....

It does contain chlorine, but it is a kind of chlorinated sucrose molecule that has been modified in such a way that it tastes like sugar, but the body cannot process it.

sugar is sugar. It doesn't matter if it's from a "natural" source. Cane sugar is "natural" too.

Cane sugar is extremely processes. Honey and/or maple syrup are not and have health benefits that processed cane sugar doesn't.

ah you're paleo; i don't know the rules of paleo.

but processed or not, sugar is still sugar, and behaves the same way in the body. the only thing you can do to make sugar better is to slow down its absorption with fiber (or fat), but the sugar is still good. you're just slowing down a bad thing.

315 Before I get into my post, I am currently doing the Bulletproof Coaching program and it is a worthwhile experience. Just to be upfront about where I'm coming from, also what I write is all me and any mistakes are a function of me not understanding well enough what I am talking about.
I do Bulletproof coffee pretty much every morning. I use mold free beans, unsalted butter and Brainobtain( Aspreys mct oil that is 18 times more concentrated in some regards compared to coconut oil.) Supposedly the purity of the coffee make sure one does not crash, which happens to some, from inferior beans and the oil is very easily absorbed and gives a boost energy wise. The butter is more complex and broken down over a longer time period. I am not sure that I am in need of the extra boost or the purity of the beans, but I am doing well IF-wise. One important function of the coffee is that it brings one closer to being in ketosis and burning fat as the primal fuel. The coffee, albeit important, is only one element of the diet he argues for adapting. Asprey claims, while being very well researched, are to a large extent a function of how well it works for him,as in n=1. And,while I might not track his experience a 100 percent, it gives me at least a different set of parameters for finding out what kind food and supplementation I should go for.

If it's nutrition, then I'm not sure why you'd want to use it but whatever. You do what you think is right for you. Personally, I'd prefer honey/syrup or stevia to a pack of splenda...but that's me.

And Nip Sip from your link:

Fact: The manufacturer of Splenda claims that chlorine
is naturally present in such foods as lettuce, mushrooms and table salt,
but they never directly state that eating Splenda is the same as eating
these foods. Remember, Splenda is not a natural substance, it is an
artificial chemical sweetener manufactured by adding three chlorine
atoms to a sugar molecule.

360 Starting this week, I'm cutting out booze and starting intermittent fasting. For 3 of the last 4 years, I've been on the road every week, and/or working 2 weeks on/2 weeks off at a remote site, and put on about 40 lbs. Six months or so ago, I started lifting weights again, first with Stronglifts 5X5, and now with a similar routine that I follow with an app on my phone. I'm 45, and I can bench, squat and deadlift more than I could in high school (and I was no slouch in high school), but I really haven't done a lot about my diet. So here goes.

363 Guaranteed way to lose weight:

Eliminate all drinks that contain calories. Diet soda is OK, but seltzer water is better.

Eliminate all bad snacks and desserts.

Substitute fruit and occasionally nuts for snacks and desserts. To make this easier, find a fruit you like and get the best quality you can. Buying organic may be the key here. Not because organic actually means much, if anything, in terms of nutrition or taste on its own, but because sometimes the organic selection is more selective. For example, the organic strawberries in my area are universally tastier and redder than the regular strawberries. They obviously do not include the partially green/white strawberries when packaging the more expensive organic. It is worth it to me to pay the extra cost because of this.

Choose chicken instead of beef.

Significantly reduce saturated fat. Avoid full fat cheese and sour cream whenever possible. These are the little extras that will hurt your weight loss.

Avoid bread, crackers, etc. Some rice and oats are OK.

If you stick to eating lots of veggies, some chicken, fruit, low/no fat dairy, the occasional bit of grain, and pick the good fats instead of the bad, you WILL lose weight incredibly fast.

I know these are obvious tips, but thought I'd share anyway.

375 IrishEi, I think the IF method allows any non-calorie drink. However, you might want to know that anything sweet, even non-calorie sweet, is believed to trigger an insulin response. 376 261 pounds during this morning's weigh-in; goal is 220. I was doing fairly well earlier this year (down to the 240's from a peak in the 280's in early 2015), but I allowed myself to begin slipping a few months ago.

I've found that a half-pot of black coffee for breakfast and primarily meat+salads for lunch and dinner allowed me to lose weight fairly effectively without being incredibly hungry. My arch-nemesis is booze--the consumption of which I absolutely must curtail if I'm ever to reach my goal. I, uh, cleared out my booze supply this past weekend, so I won't be readily tempted.

I've also got an elliptical which I plan to use again once my ankle improves (got an icepack on it now).

maybe. Fung says this may be so, but the evidence seems inconclusive. the mechanism that would occur here, if it does occur here, is that the mouth detects sweetness and starts the insulin response, *expecting* a rush of sugar that never comes.

but, as I said, I hear there are other studies that say this doesn't happen, or it's a small effect.

i'm reducing artificial sweeteners myself but cutting out all sweet from my diet is a bridge too far for me, at least right now.

No, I put together some ideas I got from reading a primal website, but it wasn't specifically addressing plantar fasciitis.

It involved mainly walking everyday in those stupid monkey feet shoes, which make you push off your forefoot and spread your toes. It's amazing, btw, that the pain in the heel relates so much to what's going on in the forefoot.

Standing on tip toes stretches it out and strengthens it too.

I have eliminated both categories. I don't eat foods that are high in bad fats or sugar. I've tried several different diets in my life and by far the best results were on the low bad fat and low bad carb combined plan. But that might be too restrictive for many people.

397 Truth:

70% of the fat in a porterhouse steak is either oleic acid, the "good" unsaturated fat found in olive oil, or stearic acid, which metabolizes to oleic acid immediately in the body.

This is true of the fat in eggs and bacon too.

There is no reason to avoid these delicious, satisfying, protein-and-nutrient rich foods.

(Just read that in Taubes last night.)

There has never been any evidence saturated fat is bad for you. It was a scam from the start, and now the medical community is admitting it, though they're loathe to do so: It means they've been selling people poison for 60 years.

concerns of aspartame causing insulin responses similar to sugar, I
decided to quit it cold turkey. Making only one other change in my diet

402 Good and bad? Always good AND bad? I am starting to think so.

My weight dropped a bit, 251, down from 256, and a new low. I haven't seen 251 since... late 1988. My blood sugar was coming down, hit a low of 126 (fasting). I had orange juice on my second to last meal night and... blew the insulin thing. It went to nearly 200 and is just into the 160's after several nights and days. Gah!

I am both low carb high fat and intermittent fasting... as a reminder. I really don't feel hungry much anymore. I watch food prep and cooking videos quite often and have no problems.

And, by the way, I use cream in tea, once or twice a day. But that is a new thing. I don't need it to hold me over, I simply want more fats in my diet, and fear I may not quite be getting that. An area I mean to pay much closer attention regarding. High fat... gotta drill that in... it's so against all the propaganda. Perhaps one guy's prop is another guys truth, at least on some things? Not sure, but maybe. I just... can't do butter in coffee. I can, and have, eaten bugs, snakes, would try bats, dog, horse. I have want to try blood pudding, love sashimi, and would love to get a goat or sheep head to roast. I simply CANNOT do butter in my coffee. Ewww!

407 people eating traditional diets high in saturated fats (like the massai of africa who eat only beef, beef milk, and beef blood (when they want protein but don't want to kill the cow)) have almost no obesity, diabetes, or cancer.

The latter are called "The diseases of civlization." People eating traditional diets high in saturated fats and low in refined carbohydrates simply don't get them.

Indians don't get them. Eskimos don't get them.

That 'diseases of civilization" infected the west but not traditional peoples was noticed and some idiot named Ancel Keys guessed -- wrongly -- that these were all caused by the wealth of the west making people able to afford more meat in their diets.

That's sort of true -- but what he ignored is that westerners were also eating hundreds of pounds of sugar plus highly refined flour per year that tribal peoples were not.

He ignored that completely. He guessed the problem was the meat and eggs.

He was wrong, and people died because of it, and continue dying now because the government and medical establishment doesn't have the guts to admit how wrong they got it.

417 Being from the 80s, fear of not being able to obtain cream or sugar due to a nuclear conflagration influenced me to acquire the taste for my coffee black. So when I started bulletproofing a year or so ago, the addition of the butter was an improvement.

Like Ace, I began with coconut oil because it was handy. Last month, I splurged for a jug of MCT oil. No real difference in flavor, but the alleged benefits come from the MCTs used. Coconut oil is mostly Lauric acid. MCT oil, at least the one I bought, is an extraction of the Caprylic and Capric acids. I think this is the basis of Aspry's claim.

Oh, gelatin for nails? Yeah, that's nonsense. The idea is that if it's made from horse's hooves, it'll go straight to your fingertips or something. Not impressive logic.

But I know I'm short on magnesium, and possibly calcium. So maybe that's it. Trying to eat more bone broth. (Which you can do without disrupting a fast, though I generally don't eat or drink at all during a fast.)

420 An easy at home remedy for plantar fasciitis is to roll the arch of your foot on a tennis ball. Another is to freeze a bottle of water and roll that under your foot (it's not comfortable!)

There's also a stretch you can do....it's similar to a calf stretch. Get in a calf stretch position but bend the knee on the side you're stretching. You should feel the stretch move into your Achilles heal.

422 This is weird how many folks here have been jumping on the 'get healthier' bandwagon over the past couple of weeks.

I dunno about the IF thing. Sounds like a situation that could possibly get your results reasonably quickly, then you blow up like a balloon as soon as you eat normally again (normal: healthyish, not normal: 100 boxes of Twinkies & a case of beer per meal). Yeah, sure. Starve yourself and you'll lose weight. Works for homeless and African kids. Hey, if it works for you for some reason, good for you.

I'm one of those skinny guys who ate everything, constantly and never gained a pound. When I was younger, I tried every supplement, ate even more, drank a gallon of milk per day, and hit the gym for an hour every day. Nothing.

Then I started closing in on 40 and my pants stopped fitting. One day I looked down and realized I couldn't see my shoes and realized I was getting worn out doing menial tasks.

So I did the P90X thing. First go round was pretty religious on the workouts but less than perfect on the food plan. I was in q world of pain for the first 2-3 weeks then the pain stopped. I got stronger, got rid of the gut mostly, and burned out about 2 1/2 months in. Endurance kicked my ass and seemed to get worse instead of better.

Took a break for a month, then tried P90X 3 (30 min instead of and hour each workout). That seemed to go better. I got a LOT stronger. By month 3 (month 6 since I started doing something other than smoking and eating Twinkies), I was probably close to the best shape of my life... and least in terms of health and strength. Endurance was still not great and I didn't look much different other than not fat. Then I fell off the wagon for 2 years, so I'm starting over again.

No P90X this time. No calorie counting. No diets (other than somewhat avoiding processed foods and tons of carbs... but I honestly am not watching what I eat).

Here's the thing I learned: eat regularly, don't eat absolute crap, and if you really want to, eat MORE- more often, smaller portions. Exercise 3 days a week (weights, walking, about and 40- 1.5 hours total) and through about 15-30 minutes of yoga per day (really helps with the pain getting back going again plus it seems to ramp up my strength and general fitness faster and more completely than anything else).

Results? Down about 5 pounds in 2 weeks. Body fat down about about .5%. DOMS pain doesn't really happen after week 1.5 and goes away faster. Strength coming up very fast.

Teach your body to eat and process food, and things seem to work out well and it took me 2 years of total neglect and doing everything wrong to start getting fat and feeling like crap again. The really good news is that things seem to be turning around faster this time with much less worrying about fads, programs, and other silly crap, "bro science" that no one really seems to understand.

424 Any advice/sources for LGHT meals? I can't seem to find many good recipes online. My husband isn't on board, and I really don't want to make two separate meals for dinner. So I need to make semi-normal things that I can add a starch to for him.

Do you do those fat bomb things? I've just been eating tablespoons of cream cheese, not sure if that's on program.

I'm excited to start IF, mostly because I hate eggs and LC breakfasts that don't involve eggs are hard to come by.

On apple cider vinegar...I LOVE LOVE LOVE vinegar, and just take it as a shot. But I also used to drink pickle juice out of the jar (and as a chaser to a shot of whiskey) so I guess I'm weird.

This. Although if you have a milk frother or a good blender bottle you can do the same thing. I get tired of hauling out the immersion blender, so I invested in a blender bottle with a stainless steel ball inside it. I put all my fat and stevia in the cup, brew the coffee over it, pop the lid on and shake it for maybe 20 seconds, and it's done. Comes out frothy and creamy just like with the blender.

They're painful to wear until your hands numb up, but I have just a trace of numbness that I don't even notice except when I think about it. That might be helpful for others who are about to go into chemo to ask the doctor about.

It works best in conjunction with low carb, high fat. Honestly, when you keto (LCHF) your hunger level decreases naturally. Fat just keeps you satiated longer, so a lot of days I get up in the morning and I'm not hungry so I don't eat until 1 or 2 in the afternoon. And voila, I've just IF'd for 19 or 20 hours without any real effort at all. I don't know if I would ever have made it when I was a carb eater. I was hungry all the damn time when I ate higher carbs and if more than 3-4 hours went by without a meal I was sick to my stomach and ready to pass out. So I really believe it's the difference in what I'm eating that allows me to stay full longer and stretch the time between my last and first meal to those lengths.

438 Ace--"i want to start doing windsprints "

Windsprints are great but I like more variation.

My workouts tend to vary: some weeks I do all weights, others I'll do all cardio, and still others I'll do a mix between cardio and weights.

The one thing they all have in common is that I use an "Insanity" type of method. "Insanity" is a program popularized on TV by a company called Beach Body and the principle is simple: work hard for 3 minutes then rest for about 30 secs.

For instance, on days that I lift, my workout looks like this: Bench press heaviest weight 6-9 reps, then quickly transition to Leg press 6-9 reps and repeat for a total of 4 sets. The transition is continuous and there are no breaks until you move to the next pair of exercises

By the end of each pairing I am totally and utterly winded and by the end of the workout I am physically fatigued (but pumped) and drenched.

Usually, I can do a full body workout in around 45 minutes depending on equipment availability. This is key because I have other things to do then spend my time in a gym.

Whatever you do Ace, you should incorporate high intensity as much as possible, windsprints is a great first step.

439 Congrats to all of the Horde working on fitness goals! And to our man/Ewok, Ace, for kicking this medical thread off!!

I lost 35+ pounds in four months and it was almost painless: just ate whatever I usually ate, but only half. Of course, it was almost painless because I had a growth that was pressing on the stomach, and so I was physically unable to eat as much as usual. Growth is gone now and I continue to try to eat about half of the normal. Have a serious sweet tooth so still indulge in the occasional sweet. Sodas are not my thing so I drink coffee in the morning, then tea and water for the rest of the day. Tried South Beach a few years ago but it was not a long-term solution for me.

442 A for the urine strips, they only really measure ketosis well at the beginning. After a while your body adapts to using the ketones efficiently and so you stop spilling so many in your urine. At that point, they're inaccurate and tend to only turn very dark when you're dehydrated. The more accurate way to check ketosis is with a blood ketone meter, which I don't bit her with personally due to $$$. If you eat under 20-50-ish carbs a day you're going to be in ketosis and I eat around 20, so I just don't sweat it.

The paleo guy I follow says that long distance running is bad for you, but you should do some kind of sprints for just a few minutes every 7-10 days. They can be on a bike, rower, running or whatever you want to get a high intensity effect.

I discovered how well the Meloxicam was performing when I went off it.

So, its cortisone in both knees and the synvisc. Getting synvisc in the other knee in about 2 weeks. Plus NSAID, ice, stretching.

Hoping it will let me return to running full time at least for a couple more years.

468 >>>443 I use olive oil for almost everything except baking (which I never do for myself anymore; just give away treats as gifts).

The jar of coconut oil I have is quite old. I tried using it in baking and wasn't pleased with the results, but that was probably my fault as I think it is the unrefined variety.

Posted by: Truth at July 25, 2016 07:31 PM (R5PUB) <<<

I use olive oil regularly as a condiment (generally mixed with garlic, salt, hot sauce, and parmesan) but only cook with coconut oil. I'm big on pan frying, sauteing, and making popcorn and find that the unrefined stuff imparts a nice, rich flavor. I can't really comment on baking; the closest I come to that is making microwaved coffee cup flax muffins on occasion.

470 Maffetone is against speed work (sprinting). But if you want to get faster at marathons, there is a method that works.

1) Most of your runs have to be very slow (heart rate at 180-age). Say 3 a week.

2) 1 long run a week at a heart rate only a bit above that.

3) 1 run a week at race pace.

4) 1 day during the week where you do hard sprints.

I think the idea is to keep your body confused. I found hard to keep this going, but it worked like a charm in improving my time and how fast I could run at a low heart rate.

My weight was at its low at that point too. Only problem was that as soon as I stopped running, I didn't stop eating and packed on the pounds.

473 461 votermom - I had the same question. Who the heck makes broth without bones?? So just another fancy new name for a traditional food. Although I think I read somewhere that the bones are boiled much longer than I've always done it, to extract more of the nutrients/calcium.

Posted by: Maureen the Lurker at July 25, 2016 07:42 PM (3htdE)

Yeah, I do mine in the crockpot, then freeze it in ice cube trays to store. Makes for easier measurements and less defrosting. To actually make the stuff I put the whole carcass of a roasted chicken in the crockpot with a quartered onion, maybe a handful of chopped celery, salt, and some whole peppercorns, cover with water to almost the top of the pot, then let it cook on low for about 48 hours. The longer you cook it, the more of the nutrients you get out of it.

475 Now that I have the official imprimatur of ace, I will indeed talk about my GAINS.

I am: 5'11'' (unless you're a pretty girl, in which case I'm six feet tall), 235 lbs

Bench: 4 reps of 265, but struggled enough on 4th rep that my spotter touched the bar, so it wouldn't count at competition

Deadlift: 5 reps of 365, and felt like I probably could have hit one more. I used to use straps as training wheels but I don't anymore. I use a traditional stance with one hand reversed as my grip - the guy I workout with that is closest to my level of strength (but much more fit - he's like 5'8'' 170 and is 10 years younger than me) and whom I sort of compete with does sumo deadlifts. I'm just not as comfortable with the sumo stance.

I'm re-testing my one rep maxes in two weeks. My deadlift last time (about a year ago) was 380 with straps - obviously I'm going to shoot past that. I'm hoping to hit 4 plates, so that's 405, but I'm feeling I might even be able to top that.

For bench, my one-rep last check was 270, so again, I know I'll shoot past that. The 'chart' says my current performance puts me around IIRC 285 or 290. For the sake of round numbers and easy bar math, I'd like to hit three plates, so 315. That's probably a goal for a couple months down the road, though.

Obviously I'm focused on strength now, but I do want to lose weight also. I'm not experimenting with IF yet, just doing healthier food and smaller portions. But if enough of the horde get results with IF I might jump on the bandwagon.

Re. rowing. I am a distance and endurance person. Old as dirt so have tried a lot of different sports, programs and changes. I love distance swimming and rowing. I hate sprints. But change of pace for me is essential to lean out.

But boredom sets in -- and sprints, intervals, etc. can add a lot. So I changed from racking up meters and time to changing things up. Maybe 20-15 minutes warm up, intervals 30sec hard, 1 min regular, x 3 or 5, then dismount and add series beside the erg -- maybe push ups, step ups, deadlifts -- 5 -8 each x1 or 2 max, and then return to 3-5 steady row, and repeat. Try to do a within specified amount of time.

Do similar with swimming, some days endurance, other, change up strokes, pulls, etc and add sprints.

Keeps me interested. 2 cents. Also for me, a good all around series of Turkish Get Ups with KB, weight of your choosing or not .

482 Re bone broth: Many of the Paleo sites recommend using an Instant Pot, which is a multi function cooking unit: pressure cooker, slow cooker, rice cooker, steamer...
You use the pressure cooker feature to make bone broth in about 3 hours:
celery, carrots, onion, bones, salt (I use fish sauce), apple cider vinegar and water. Takes about 20 mins to get up to pressure; cook for 2 hours, 20 mins to depressurize.

Great numbers Bro!!!
Here's a key takeaway from the Hodge Twins about IF: when you lift weights, do it in your fasted state.
When I saw that, I thought "oh no effin way. I'll pass out." My first two days on IF weren't weight days. The 3d day was a weight day...and the idea of burning fat to fuel my workouts was intriguing, to say the least. But just in case, I put two protein bars in my bag, because I just KNEW I wouldn't get through the workout with them. And it was squat day.
Well surprise, surprise, surprise. Not only did I make complete the workout in the fasted state, I felt strong throughout the workout. Squat day, bench day, and deadlift day...all in the fasted state. And today is the beginning of my 3d week on IF. No question I'm burning fat, the way my Wranglers fit is testament to that.
And I'm not putting up beginner numbers either. Last week, peak squat set was 315 x 3, during bench day, singles at 300, 315, and 325, and during deads, a set of 350 x 4. Needless to say, I'm delighted that I'm using fat to fuel these workouts.
My workouts begin at the 14th hour of my fasted state.
It works.

Posted by: gracepc at July 25, 2016 08:33 PM (OU4q6)

493 Oh, and since I guess it also kinda matter.

I'm about to turn 29 in two weeks. My routine is on Monday and Wednesday I do what is basically a 45 minute HIIT (high intensity internal training) class. On Tuesday and Thursday I do the class that emphasizes the powerlifting stuff - we bench every Tuesday and deadlift every Thursday. After doing our sets (usually one warmup and three sets of increasing weight/decreasing reps, and we have an 'off-exercise' that usually works the same muscle group that we do while the other guys in the class are doing their lift, so we end up doing 3 or 4 sets of the 'off-exercise.' Sometimes it's kroc rows, sometimes it's band pull-aparts, sometimes it's something totally different like reverse crunches), we do a strength-based cardio circuit - the trainer is good at hitting different muscle groups, and we have some of the fun shit to use every once in a while (tires for flips, sledgehammers, weight sleds, heavy ropes, kegs, atlas stones). The total workout is again about 45 minutes. I always do a short warmup beforehand and stretch/use a foam roller afterwards. It incorporates some CrossFit elements, but it's definitely not CrossFit.

I do pretty much nothing exercise-wise on Friday and Sunday. On Saturday I work out at home but no heavy weights, mostly just cardio and core work and stretching.

I don't know if there's an "ideal" way to schedule workouts. My regimen now seems to be working well. Yeah, I'm sore as hell Friday morning, but that's the price of working hard during the week.

At one point I was definitely using too many painkillers to manage the soreness/muscle fatigue. My kidney and liver function always check out just fine at my physicals, but I know part of that is due to youth, and I don't want to start bad habits. I try to use as few NSAIDs as possible now - no APAP (tylenol) ever, and if I feel I really need it, I'll use a bit of aspirin or ibuprofin. I also have this topical gel (it's called Voltaren - for medical types who would know or care, it's diclofenac sodium) that is good for shoulder and hip pain in lieu of painkillers - my grandpa is a Dr., so I just get it from him. I also ordered magnesium on the advice of fellow Moron sixkiller and I hope that will also help combat the soreness and muscle fatigue.

500 I've been HFLC for about 2 years now. Lost about 70 lbs going from 290 to 220-225ish. I go the heavy whipping cream and stevia route with my coffee in the morning. I've pretty much plateaued at around this weight though it seems and would probably need to start exercising to start losing again. Though a lot of people have commented that I look skinny, but being 6'4" I can get away with that will still weighing 225. One thing that I have noticed is that I can dip down to under 220 for a bit if I actually have a cheat day were I eat pizza or past and then go back to low carb. I'm guessing the carbs are revving up my metabolism somewhat. I do take a couple of tablespoons of apple cider vinegar though I treat it like a shot of vodka and literally put it in a shot glass and slug it down. One way to make it go down smoother is to mince up some fresh garlic, mix it with a couple of cups of cider vinegar in a sauce pan and simmer for 10 minutes or so. Put this in a jar with a lid in it in the fridge. Makes it taste more like a salad dressing and the garlic is good for you to boot. Drinking the vinegar straight also helps if you have a swollen gland in your neck, sore throat, or a lot of mucus crud throat. The vinegar makes you pucker so much you can feel it squeezing those toxins right out of your throat.

I switch the exercises up to keep things fresh and ensure I hit all 3 heads of the triceps.

For example, last Wednesday, I did super-sets of weighted dips (25 pounder) combined with triceps push downs. The sets of weighted dips were all I could get; the push downs used a heavy enough weight to limit my reps to 10-12. Any less than that and I wouldn't be ramming enough blood into the muscle. Go from one exercise to the other, no rest. That's one set. Rest. Repeat. 3 sets total.

Next up, super set triceps extensions, using the rope attachment, with reverse triceps extensions using the bar. Again, one after the other; 10-12 reps, 3 sets total.

You'll get a great pump and lots of blood flow to grow the muscle.

I just watched a video of a Zercher squat. Looks like a much more painful version of a Goblet squat, except using a barbell, and designed to screw with your elbows!

If your trainer loves them, however, you're probably going to keep doing them.

In the video I watched, I would have one suggestion for the guy performing the squats. I thought his stance was a little too narrow -- 2-4 inches wider would make a huge difference; plus, if he pointed his toes outward at more like a 45 degree angle instead of straight ahead, it would take the strain off his knees.
But hey - that was the only video I watched.

509 1 Pat of butter
1 packet of artificial sweetener
A dab of vanilla - a little goes a long way

Mix together. Eat.

I don't like Stevia sweetner. I use a no-name brand.

It tastes like you are eating cookie batter before you add the flour/dry items when making cookies from scratch.

When you make chocolate chip cookies you mix butter, white and brown sugar, vanilla, and eggs. Then you add the flour/dry items.

So it's like you are sneaking a taste.

Note the wide stance and the foot angle. Also the monolift -- only powerlifting gyms have these.

Box squats are the best way to train the deadlift.

I forgot, yeah, we have done those too - either with the barbell across the shoulders like Oly style, and I believe we may have done it with two dumbbells like a front squat and with two kettle bells in the same way.

Yeah, I'm not the biggest fan of the Zercher squat either, but I did find early on that the wide stance is the way to go - I was almost pushing my feet against the squat rack. With a narrow stance, they were just killing me.

We don't do them that often, though - usually he works them into a 'strongman style' workout once a month, and our go-to is goblet squats or less often those box squats (though we don't do the barbell box squats as often).

513 Beyond Bulletproof: Adding *fiber* to my current version of bulletproof coffee. Specifically, potato starch and Inulin FOS. The theory here is to continue everyday intermittant fasting(nothing to eat from 8pm to noon except fatty coffee) and low carb dieting, with fiber supplements that will keep large intestine bugs happy and producing short chain fatty acids and other fermentation by-products. Why add that? Low carb diets are probably too low in fiber, which harms the bowel lining and allows inflammation and immune system response causing stuff into the body.

I thought I'd try to increase my magnesium for a variety of reasons that sounded good at the time. After taking magnesium supplements for a bit, my memory popped out something from a hazy, unpleasant period some years before.....the "cleanout juice" for colonoscopy prep is primarily magnesium.

I don't know if I netted any actual absorbed magnesium, but the supplements can be brutal on your absorption of everything else.

Starch isn't fiber. It's actually converted to sugars by enzymes in your saliva -- it hits the stomach as sugars.

516 Important recipe note on mixing potato starch into any hot drink: The fiber transforms into digestible ...carbohydrates it seems...at temps above 130F, so the trick is to work out the number of ice cubes it takes to cool your standard cup of hot beverage to something below that, before adding the fiber. Bonus: This seems to help disperse the oils into the coffee better, rather than subjectIng me to concentrated doses off the top. Also have added raw coconut powder atop the rest. One or a combo of these additives precipitates a bit, so an occasional shaking of the Contigo mug seems to be required.

Subjective results: This seems to have beaten down cravings and diet failings of the scrounging for carbs variety. hoping to lose some fat now after being stable for a few years about where I am, maybe 5 to 8 lbs north of ideal.

518 Just got back into my IF and ACV again after some weird 100+ fasting bg and for the first time, I've been in the low to mid 70s. No hypos, (no meds, just diet and exercise) just feeling good.
As long as my labs continue to look good (which they are), this way of eating is completely sustainable and probably saved my life.
FYI, my son was diagnosed with T1 and we are also doing lchf for his treatment (with insulin). Have to run some genetic tests on me to see where the link is, but either way, we have so much more control and energy eating this way.

Loose stool can result from too much magnesium, primarily magnesium oxide. Back off the dosage and you'll be fine.

Better yet, don't take magnesium oxide at all, take magnesium chloride which has a far greater bio-availability rate. With magnesium oxide, you're wasting your money.

524 Re: bone broth.
If you have a pressure canner or pressure cooker, you can get good hearty bone broth in about 2 hours instead of cooking it all day. I was doing 6-8 hours, then pulling the broth out as well as the meat and vegetables, then putting the bones back in with more water and cooking slowly for another 6-8 hours. I have a Presto Pressure Canner and can do all that in an afternoon now.

527 Hmm, seems like I have willowed the post. My stats:
38 year old 5'5" woman with PCOS and history of infertility. Earlier this year I got down to 220 and could not budge. I could not eat less and I could not work out more. I gave up and got back up to 245 as of today.

Had some measurements from March, so I compared them to this morning. Seems that all 25 of those pounds went to my stomach area. Yeah.

Low carbing and will be using coconut oil / extra light olive oil mid morning and mid afternoon to help get more fat. With a glass of water right after, this helps cut cravings.

529 I'll second the resistant starch thing. Been using it for six months now - raw unmodified potato starch. For me at least, it proves the theory of the gut-brain axis. Increases REM sleep. I went from rarely dreaming to wild, vivid evenings. Like sharing an intimate moment with Liz Hurley and then in walks my dead father, David Letterman and a Bear on roller skates with a funny hat.

Are you doing a bit of potato starch all day, or just in the evening? The various directions out there for taking resistant starches/fermentable fiber/pre-biotics had indicated spread this throughout the day. So I was sort of obliged to add it to the only thing I eat before noon...the pre-existing slug of "Bulletproof" like fatty coffee I have been depending on for a few years now.

Second shot of it is with a just-before-bed amino acid powder combo I concocted about a year, interpolating between various capsule formulas that hit the market back then. That amino acid combo(*) improved my chances of sleeping through the night without trouble, without notable effects like recalling vivid dreams(even if maybe had some). Now, adding the Inulin and potato starch to that slurry also does nothing I am able to know of to dreams. What does reliably yield me recall of vivid dreams is eating a bit dark chocolate or cocoa powder in the afternoon or anytime after that... Which dreams are cool sometimes...however I thought I knew that such recall of dreams meant you've rapidly awoken from them, i.e. not great sleep quality if that is happening much. So I stay away from much chocolate/cocoa later in the day and particularly at night, on that theory.

The goal of some of this has been...was anyway... for me to sleep better, and produce HGH better, at night. The amino acids are supposed to help with both that and blood vessel wall health. Getting insulin down well before sleep is also meant to help boost HGH production in sleep...and the results of doing that have been SPECTACULAR improvement in my ability to sleep straight through the evenings. Who knows if it is helping HGH though.

531 You don't want to be eating cinnamon as a dietary supplement unless it's actual Sri Lankan cinnamon.

Cassia, which is usually labeled and sold as cinnamon, contains high amounts of coumarin which will eff up your liver if consumed in large amounts.

Furthermore, since cassia is so much cheaper, people often try to pass it off as real cinnamon, and you can't really tell the difference visually if it's ground. In stick form, real cinnamon will show a thinner, feathery edge on the ends as compared to cassia.

533 For people who think stevia has an "off" taste:
Combine two or three different kinds, and then add a half pinch of good salt (say, Himalayan pink salt, or Celtic sea salt) to whatever your making. Smoothes out the taste.

Also, be sure to look at the stevia ingredients. If it includes dextrose, understand that the dextrose will induce the insulin response. Many of the low-price Stevias in the grocery stores include dextrose.

If you can get past the rambling writing, the book "Trim Healthy Mama" gives a terrific survey of eating to lose weight and get healthy. It explains the research and the why's and how's. And yes, my masculine husband is reading the book, we're both following the plan. Awesome weight loss, chronic pain going away by lessening the chronic inflammation, burping gone, flatulence almost non-existent. . .

535 Can anyone recommend a low carb bread substitute with the "mouth-feel" of bread? Extra points if it can be used in the same way as bread to make a sammich. Posted by: Minuteman

Why not cut your bread consumption in half the easy way? Over the course of a year that adds up tremendously.

Gather all your lunchmeats. Take a single slice of bread and place on plate. Add your meat and cheese, same as usual. Cut sandwich in half. Place one half over other half.

I've been doing this for ages. You get all the taste and texture of a sandwich, but you've cut bread consumption in half. Sandwich tastes just as good, if not better.

I'd imagine a loaf of bread weighs two pounds. If you go from consuming one loaf of bread per week to one half loaf, you're consuming about twenty-six less pounds of bread per year.

536 I was at 185 with a goal of getting to 170. Started IF/low-carb 2 weeks ago but couldn't exercise due to back strain. Lost 2 pounds in week 1. Lost 0 pounds in week 2. Just resumed lifting with some cardio. Hoping for another measurable loss in week 3. But the no result for this past week sucked.

537 You are probably not intermittent fasting if you break your fast with BPC in the morning. It has zero to dobqith insulin and everything to do with calories.

LCHF diet reduces insulin response, but IF works regardless of type of diet. The benefits of IF are amazing BTW - try it for yourself!

That's interesting. I just finished induction - 14 days - on Atkins and I guzzled generic diet cola and used generic sweeteners - so the cheap crap - and lost 10 lbs.

I'm female and I know water weight issues but I've not had any problems with the sweetener issue.

You've got to be diligent in counting your carbs and then Atkins works.

This is my second phase of Atkins. I lost the bulk of the weight I wanted to lose last year. This is my attempt to get to my perfect ideal weight.

Atkins - Low carb/High fat works because you can only eat so much fat and protein. I'm not hungry in the least and so calorie count does drop off.

TIPS -

Plan ahead. Test out meals that you like before you start the actual program.

Start at lunch time on your first day. Meaning have carbs for breakfast - an early breakfast. That way you avoid the - carb flu headaches. You are asleep for the switch over the next day.
