Open Thread for Politics, News, and Misery [Y-not]

Here's an open thread for those of you who don't want to hang out on the Happiness thread which is posted above.

DeezNuts.jpg

(Picture from here.)

Speaking of which, Deez Nuts is disappointed:

"I don't know what happened, because they are probably the two most disliked people they could have picked. Yet, the only two people that were favorable, John Kasich and Bernie Sanders," said Brady Olson, 16, trailing off as he shook his head slowly in disbelief.

Also, is the #DNCLeak getting their own thread at some point? Or did I just miss it? A lot of what we suspected about media/democrat collusion is being established as fact. Radio silence on CNN etc., of course.

20 If the manner in which the media has covered the Wikileaks emails doesn't convince someone of their bias, I'm not sure what will.

They reveal that the DNC actively worked against Bernie Sanders.

They also indicate something about Ted Cruz. I'm not sure if it's true or not, but it doesn't look very good.

Ha, Scott is probably right.

I didn't see Kaine's speech, but from what my husband told me and Hillary's tweet, he's going to be really going after the NRA. That'll make him seem even more beta. Try to ban all the fun things, you effete, out of touch scolds.

25 "I don't know what happened, because they are probably the two most disliked people they could have picked."
===========================

Pretty obvious what happened. America hates its present regime, ideological as it is. The world is going to shit because out official policy is to make amends for past abuses of power when used against oligarchs and lefties (but I repeat myself) by hamstringing ourselves and promoting despotic rule. The economy has also gone to shit, after a steady eight year duet of ideological Progressive crap sandwiches.

America wants pragmatic politics, and Trump is totally practical and utilitarian in his approach. Hillary is a criminal mastermind, and seems pragmatic about everything else.

So that's what happened.

Hillary's hope is that TK speaks Spanish so this will help with the Hispanic vote. I dunno. He and Hillary are all-in for Amnesty. Hillary wants to give Illegals ObamaCare, even though ObamaCare will already break the bank.

And the MSM will double down on its refusal to acknowledge Islam as a factor, no matter how overtly apparent ir may be that Islam is definitely a factor.

43 "I don't know what happened, because they are probably the two most disliked people they could have picked."

Two parties had different dynamics. The Inner Democratic Party picked Hillary before the race even started and then had all the superdelegates commit early, and used dirty tricks to keep any real competitors from entering the race. They had to let someone run for show and thought what harm could an old Jewish socialist cause?

The Inner Republican party wanted Jeb! and thought his family name and a boatload of money would clear the field. Didn't play out that way.

48 Did anybody really believe Ted Cruz when he said he would abolish the IRS? I mean, it's a commendable goal, but entire fantasy when the debt count is nineteen trillion and counting. The country has to be run like a business and you don't kick your billing and collections department out on the street when you're wallowing in debt, with the wolves at the door.

I started out 100% Ted, but he and Glenn Beck, took turns shooting him in the foot.

The other major party seems to wish it could be like the first one. And one might find hopeful indications in the fact that the two most "un-establishment" figures ran away with the primaries (everyone seems to ignore this).

Yet ..... 2010 and 2014 (and, in a way, 2012) showed that - perhaps - the overall inertia of the irresponsible and lawless status quo simply will not be moved, even by wave election results.

I think that's the case. The "press" has morphed, completely, into an information ministry for the lawless, racist, race-baiting, anti-constitutional, authoritarian status quo (in culture, politics, all major govt. institutions save tiny hold-out parts of the military). Together with the collapse of citizenship and civil literacy, game essentially over.

Cruz told Trump when he was invited and again two days before the convention that he wouldn't endorse. It would have garnered much less notice if Trump's camp hadn't encouraged the Boos and then obsessed over it.

Candidates have been called a lot of awful things. That's fair game. What isn't fair game is to go after families. It happens - they attacked Andrew Jackson's wife, for instance, but it isn't and shouldn't be an accepted part of politics. And the particular attack on Cruz's father is madness with few precedents.

If Trump wins, we will desperately need Constituitonalists to stand up to him, because the GOPe has no intention of doing so and he himself has no regard for the founding principles of the nation. We need to bolster Cruz and Lee, not attack them.

1) Putin is looking to expand and is testing all of western Europe - he regularly stages incursions into UK and other ally's territories and has kidnapped Baltic citizens. he is expansionist. Not to play brinkmanship with him at the moment is to appease him.

2) Part of the reason Putin is being aggressive is that Obama looks weak. Trump looks weaker - or, to be exact, like a happy Putin stooge.

3) saying you MIGHT not defend NATO allies destroys the whole point of NATO. The idea is that if you invade one NATO nation, you are immediately at war with every NATO nation. That doesn't work if you say, "well, we'll check the balances and think about it..." That's a green light to Putin.

4) Estonia pays its share. Latvia and Lithuania pay closer to their share then Canada, Germany, etc. If you want to pressure them, you do it in back room meetings.

5) two years ago, most people on here would think someone with Trump's connections and attitudes about an enemy nation was pretty close to committing treason.

Concern noted. Virtue signalling noted.

What exactly would we do if the mooches and the fair-weather friends who are our NATO "allies" were invaded by Russia? More to the point, what *could* we do? Answer: very damned little.

We're back to something eerily similar to the Eisenhower "New Look" defense policies, where the nuclear stick was required to back up conventional forces which had been sharply cut back. Except that when Ike used that strategic model, the U.S. had clear nuclear superiority, something which Obama and his predecessors have traded away. The NATO mooches can't fill that gap either.

We're not going to start WWIII for the sake of the mooches and the fair-weather friends. No President is realistically going to do that.

72 We should form some sort of alliance with Russia to fight against the jihadis. They're a common enemy.

Putin is a typical Russian strongman, but he's a long way from Stalin. He wants to Make Russia Great Again, so maybe Trump sees a kindred spirit in that sense.

Putin cannot be trusted with the time of day. He is looking for every opportunity to revenge the death of the Soviet union and recreate it.

One of the greatest mistakes US pols and advisers make in regard to every fucking country on earth, is to assume that all peoples everywhere have the same motives, reasoning, goals as people the West do.

We almost experienced global nuclear war because of that pathological naivete.

Trump has shown little interest in or knowledge of the Constitution. When he brings it up - or is challenged on it, as Rand Paul did in the primary - he shows shocking ignorance.

Specifically, he has no concern with the division of powers or federalism. His view of the government is purely authoritarian, with all power resting in the executive.

On the most basic level, see how often you hear him say liberty, freedom, or mention the constitution.

You should probably listen to what Trump and his surrogates actually say.

Oh, and by the way, as to letting Putin have those silly "mooches" - Estonia is one of five nations that pays its share. And we benefit as much as most of Western Europe by not letting an expansionist, totalitarian dictator increase his power and decide that we are too weak to respond to his territorial expansions.

Oh, you want to get more money out of other nations? Negotiate with them in private - something Trump is supposed to be good at it. Don't repeatedly give a big green light to our enemies.

Republicans used to believe this. About a year and a half ago.

In the bad old days of Bush II, and of second-term Clinton for that matter, the plan I got would have paid for that, and for less premiums. But because the market has been boned so hard by Olympia Snowe, Nancy Pelosi, and Barky deductibles are so high I may as well not be insured at all.

One can only judge a mans character and mindset by what they've shown to that point. If facts later appear that lessen one's opinion of another, well, that is because they are human.
He did what he did at the convention and only time will tell if it hurts or helps him personally. It probably hurt Trump a little, but there's so much time until Nov. that plenty of events and words will have buried this by then, at least in the minds of most voters.

Which brings me to one other little quibble, concerning history.

We're bringing up the actions of individuals in the past (like Reagan and his endorsement or nonendorsement of Ford) to what, try to gain insight into the future?
Not gonna happen.
If we are to learn from history, we need to look at macro, not micro. This is just one Morons opinion, btw.

Boxing got boring and too obviously fixed. The audience left.

Friedman makes a great point, but IIRC, he also said that you have to incentivize that politician to do the right thing. You don't pick some guy and then just go along with whatever crazy shit he says.

When Trump decided to run for president this last time, he had his people look at what the base was most agitated about, and that was illegal immigration. So he did a 180 on that issue from his 2012 position (Romney's too mean to the Mexicans), and here he is--to his credit. He also studied up on the 2A and got his head right on that. Good!

But he's pushing a big government agenda and could improve on some issues. Far better than Hillary, but needs some improvement.

Where's the incentive for him to improve if we all just go along with Mr Trump on whatever statist thing plops out of his mouth?

Although perhaps the details don't matter so much as long as he appoints good judges AND spends his political capital to get them approved. It's too bad that judges have become so important, but that ship has left the barn.

209 Fifth Amendment OKs eminent domain for public purpose if fair compensation is paid. Kelo reads "public purpose" broadly. I think it was wrongly decided, but I wasn't on SCOTUS at the time. It's now the law of the land. In effect, it lets states do what they want on this question.

But Kelo doesn't say that states have to let Wal-Mart build on land it seizes from old ladies. This kind of thing has become politically unpopular. There aren't a lot of Kelo eminent domain seizures.

Now look at the ObamaCare decision. Roberts flaked and deserves to be criticized. But it was a law passed with the acquisecence of Republicans in Congress. Harry Reid jammed it through by stripping an unrelated bill. The Maine Republican Senators could have killed it in Committee. I could go on. Point is that it wasn't all on Roberts, who could say that we the people elected these shitheads so it was up to us to change Congress -- which we did but then Congress did nothing.

Now here's the one to bitch about -- Kennedy's gay marriage decision which he made up by reading the 14th amendment contrary to its words and history. To force an anti-democratic result on the entire country.

So if you're hung up on Kelo it teels me that you're either disingenuous or you don't have your priorities straight.

211 John F**ing Kerry thinks refrigerators and air conditioning is as much a threat as ISIS or even greater

Despite hearing this type of stupidity for years from liberals it still stuns me when they say it so openly. Maybe it is because they are so rarely challenged by the media. Without air conditioning, and especially refrigeration large parts of our population would rapidly die off as food could not be easily stored or transported large distances. Life would be hellish in hot climates, disease would be more rampant and and the sick and elderly would die in droves during heat waves.

The deaths from lack these modern conveniences would dwarf the deaths from terrorism by a factor of thousands. But yeah, those are what threaten us.

212 Kelo was one of the worst Supreme Court rulings in history. The right to private property goes all the way back to medieval times. The Supremes arrogantly changed the wording of the 5th amendment by changing the ability of government to "take" your property from "public use" to "public purpose". If you read Kelo you will find this purposely stated.

And the irony is that after taking the property and giving it to another non-government entity it was never used for that "public purpose".

Every judge who voted for that abortion of a ruling should have been impeached. But we have no opposition party.

The DNC should be raked over the coals for the content of the e-mails, and the media and twitter should be lambasted for trying to play it down.

BUT if an antagonistic foreign government is trying to influence the election, that is also an enormous issue, particularly given Trump's recent foreign policy statements and the changes his team made to the GOP platform.

I am a defender of Kelo. It's horrible policy but the ruling was correct. The government clearly gained a public good in the form of increased revenues by seizing private property for sale to another private owner who would increase property values and therefore taxation. The mere fact that no government with the slightest respect for justice or private property would enact such a policy does not mean such a policy violates the constitution. We complain when "Justice" Darth Vader Ginsberg determines her favored outcome then makes shit up to achieve that outcome. Why, therefore, is it OK for conservative justices to do the same?

The eminent domain abuse problem needs to be addressed by statute or amendment, not by the making-shit-up standard.

Good idea. While you're at it, you might want to let Trump know that he won the Republican nomination and now might be a good time to focus on his opponent instead of worrying about whether or not he can form SuperPACs to punish Republicans who did not kiss his ring.

Wherever you stand on Cruz, Kasich, the Bushs, etc., what make more sense- figuring out next steps in your war again the party that just nominated you or what you're going to do about the person who is actually running against you.

For fuck sake. What kind of imbecile calls a press conference a day after the convention and proceeds to spend the time talking about SuperPACs against Republicans who aren't even up for election this cycle?

The guy can't keep his eye on the ball for even a day and, instead, is focused on punishing people of no consequence who's only crime is not sucking up to him and treating him "fairly" or with the outlandish level of respect he thinks he's due. Sure, let's make sure the IRS, CIA, and all federal law enforcement report to this guy, make him commander in chief of the military and give him nuclear codes. That will show the next person who fails to gush over him or dares to question his decisions or judgement.

Good question. As the guy who held a press conference about it the day after accepting the R nomination.

Lets see... what was happening on Friday? Day after the convention. Day after some terrorist attacks people with an axe in Germany, Germany has a mass shooting. Obama goes out to the press core and trashes Trump's "dark" speech, Hillary is due to announce her running mate...

Hmm... let's hold a press conference and ask my running mate if, as President, I can put 20 million into SuperPAC to punish the guys who I ran against in the primaries.

Why are people talking about Cruz? Go ask Trump. He's the fucking reason.

====================

I got that email from the cruz campaign as well. Looks like Eric Bennett gave $10 to Cruz so he would get all the Cruz email appeals. Read carefully. Breathe. Relax.

357 I would not bite into those poll numbers for love or money. Rotten and boney, with a side of leftism. Oh, believe as you like. This isn't even going to be a 'fair' election with a woman in it. She'll cry for years that it was stolen... not by ballot malfeasance, but because she's a girl. Do bull dikes count? Just... Yeah.

Yeah, I am probably more for Trump than any other Republican. And Definitely more for him than her. But... not so much that I am likely to vote. I live in Utah, and I think they are going to stay home or even vote for Hillary. Yeah. We'll see, but that's how it's looking. Not my problem. One more reason to move I think.

Nothing personal. Just not a good fit with statist left-sided so-called conservatives. I moved from Iowa, first, for the same reason. Here it's just... more organized and top-down.

358 Hmm.... I loved my number! I feel a thrill going up my leg! Wait.. that's... yeah... Private moment.

359 "Utah"
"left-sided so-called conservatives"

How so? Aren't they quite conservative? Low divorce rates, low rates of illegitimacy? The statism might be an issue, but I see it as secondary to other problems.
