What Makes You Happy? [Y-not]

The news cycle has been unrelenting this year. I know it's taken its toll on me and those around me. I need a break, so this thread will be politics- and news-free.

Several months ago, I attended a funeral for someone I had never met. She was a long-time and much-beloved employee at my husband's new workplace. I knew very few people at the funeral (really more of a memorial service) and virtually none of the people or places or events in the stories that they shared about her.

It was one of the most moving services I've ever attended. The siblings and coworkers of the woman being honored were very eloquent, managing to express their love and admiration of this woman through their grief. (This greatly impressed me because when I attended my own mother's funeral, I could not even manage to muddle through a scripture reading without breaking down.)

I don't recall many specifics about what her loved ones said, except for one thing: in this woman's last months of life, after battling cancer for several years, she experienced a period of relative health. During that time she made sure she spoke frequently with her family, especially her sons, as well as with clergy, lawyers, and financial planners (one of her sons is disabled so much planning was needed). And she did one more thing: she threw herself into pursuing an exercise regime that featured pilates.

And it gave her joy.

This was a woman of considerable intellect and emotional depth who invested much of her final time on Earth in something purely physical. And she did it not because she wanted to look better in a bathing suit next summer, but because it made her happy.

26 I was walking my dog one day and ran into a lady and her elderly mother, the elderly mother was in a home nearby that is assisted living for people with varying forms and levels of dementia. The elderly woman lit up like a light bulb when she met my dog and sat on her lap (wheel chair) and I took pictures for them with their iphone and talked with the daughter about the neighborhood, up north (I am in Florida) and other nonsense. We went our separate ways.
A few months later, the woman came to my house, she remembered which house it was and invited me to the memorial service, she said that afternoon with my dog was a day that stood out among all the days towards the end of her life as one that was really special. She wanted to let me know that they were dedicating a garden at the facility to her, just needed to get it cleaned up for the landscaping to be installed. I told her I had no plans for the evening so we walked over there and I cleaned it all up that night with a rake broom and about a dozen lawn bags. She was not expecting that, so it was a nice surprise.
I did show up for the memorial, and they all made a big deal about me and buster (dog) and the work I did to get the garden cleaned up. I sat through a complete stranger's funeral, everyone should do it. You get a strange realization that there are so many interesting people around you that you will never meet that have done amazing things and affected tons of people, just not you.
But for happiness, I drink and argue with my wife about politics and drinking too much.

35 I just got back from the gym. I joined at the beginning of the month and have gone about four days of every five. I cannot say it's really helping with the depression but I'm a fair bit stronger than I was just a few weeks ago and have gotten down to 225 from the 240 norm of recent years. Though much of that is from the appetite suppressing effect of depression. Still, if I could get down close to 200, I could reduce the blood pressure meds I'm on or possibly no longer need them. The monthly bill for the prescriptions is several dollars more than the monthly membership fee for the gym, so that would be a worthwhile trade-off.

38 I am actually happy that you put this up and I hope that it, or something like it, becomes something of a regular type thing on this site (that is, if this site persists into the future).

We - all of us - society at large, it seems has gotten so negative. It pervades everything and I think that it is what we are being made to focus on, either through design, or by some unlucky cosmic coincidence.

I think it just might be possible to individually, and then collectively, change our focus and give a giant smiling, positive middle finger to whatever it is that is keeping us so angry and resentful and hateful and negative.

I'm trying. I've taken steps. Baby steps. But I'm committed and I'm going to continue and I have to say, I'm better for what I have done so far.

I feel fairly certain we aren't supposed to be like this, and that goes for us individually and as a society.

So - all that is to say - way to go! And more please.

60 Participating in a quilting group at church makes me happy. We make prayer quilts for sick members and other friends/family of the church in a factory line approach - one person designs it (picks design, cuts fabric and assembles the kit), another sews the quilt top, another puts it all together (backing, binding, label), and church parishioners do the ties while saying a prayer for the recipient. Providing the detail because I love that this allows me to design and kit dozens of quilts and see them finished quickly - unlike having an unfinished, in-progress quilt sitting in my office and the stress of needing to get it done. Love to see the letters of thanks we receive from recipients, too. More fun as a project for others than self.

84 Y-not, my daughter does pilates as part of her dance conditioning class that she takes every week. Ballerinas need a strong core to go en pointe. It really helps, although the fact that she is only 17 also helps. The routine her instructor puts them through is insane.

115 What makes me happy?

1) Watching my kids grow up. They're (11 1/2 and 10 yrs old) and starting to enjoy more "grown-up" tastes in movies and music. We watched Outlaw Josey Wales the other night and the first half of The Good The Bad and The Ugly.

2) We have a saying in our house: "There are only 2 kinds of music. Here, we listen to the good kind". The radio plays the music dad likes to listen to, and the kids are fine with that. So they have developed a taste for:

'40s channel on Sirius (Basie, Sinatra, Ella, Doris Day, Mills Bros) etc.

Country - the good kind, Haggard, Hank Williams, Bob Wills,

Grateful Dead (admittedly an acquired taste, but they like some songs)

Bluegrass

Classic Rock - AC/DC, Van Halen, Aerosmith, Skynyrd etc.

Van Morrison

daughter likes ABBA, son likes Led Zep

we went to a gathering with some of her dance friends and there was all this current pop stuff (Taylor Swift, Katy Perry? god knows who else) and all the girls were singing along. When we left, my daughter said "I like the music we play at our house daddy"

I know exactly what you mean. I had an absolute disaster of a 2015 that I swear that if I told you even a third of what happened to me and my family of the course of the year, you would call me a lying liar of the worst sort. In August of last year, it got too much for me. I told my sister, who was caught up in it nearly as much as I was, that I was done. I was done being resentful; I was done hating; and I was going to change. From August to Jan 1st I struggled. I recommitted on Jan 1st, not out of any resolution mind you, but out of determination to change.

If you knew me in August of last year, you would not know me today.

Someone earlier said that happiness is a choice. I kind of believe that, but more, I believe that we are what we choose to dwell on. Not think about, but dwell on.

We tend, I do at least, focus on negative things more than positive ones because negative things can taint every aspect of our life. Positive things are typically (I think) discrete events. Negative things can be pervasive.

I'll give you an example from my life: My grandson was alienated out of my life after I had raised him for eleven years. I haven't spoken to him since last May. That event killed me. After a while though, I chose to focus on the eleven absolutely magnificent years I had from his birth. I hope things work out, but I'm not focusing on the bit of time in the meantime, while I wait for things to work out.

All the best to you, BTW, winger. Keep your head up.

I don't know yoga from anything, but Crossfit is intense but it is also customized. I freely admit that it is not for everyone, but it fit me like a glove. For me, and I never thought it possible of me given my age, but it made me feel athletic again and the competition that is inherent in sports in general is of a totally different flavor in Crossfit. 171 NDH,
Hope you found cat. I had one wander into a storage closet 2 apt. bldgs. away behind the maintenance guy, stuck in there 4 days, neighbors reported hearing cat, she got out randomly and wandered home.

***

Yes. Late last night and I burst into tears.

I know their routines very well and she had completely vanished. It's happened with other cats and some have returned, others have not. She is one who barely leaves the edge of the yard and I studied my security footage like crazy, but couldn't spot her at anytime since Wednesday.

I was beginning to give up hope.

Wherever she was freaked her out because she wanted to be next to me all night and was hesitant to go outside this morning.

Thanks for asking.

I think that is more likely to happen when you are looking for something to do it for you. By 'thing' I only mean an external stimulus. Even separate from the things we do hold dear.

207 I am attempting to find happiness in little things.

So yesterday. my husband and I went to the vespers service at the Orthodox church. It made me happy because I wasn't responsible for anything. I just got to listen to the chanting-particularly of the psalms and let itr wash over my spirit. After the service, I talked to a older man 60's early 70s who is being ordained a Deacon next week. It's taken him 15 years to get o this point. I guess he was going to seminary part time while working full time and had been another denomination before that. He and his wife are such dear people and he's so excited about his ordination, and I get to go because A layperson whom I covered for today is filling in for me next week. I gather the service is quite something!

Everyone I know, has seen the change in my life since last year and every single one of them has commented at one time or another on how I've changed. But they seem content to stay where they are, taking their anti-depressants and watching Dancing with the Stars.

I came from a place where I was certain that my life was over last August, so my perspective is perhaps different, but you will never convince me to understand their perspective.

I'm not suggesting that you try to get as low as I got, but let me tell you, there are ways to find happiness and the resources to do it you absolutely can do on your own, though the SEALS say you need to have a swim buddy - and that is absolutely a good thing to have.

I started with meditation - I looked up Jewish meditation on Youtube and surprisingly found it. That started the ball rolling and from there, it seems like the pieces just keep falling into place and I absolutely could not be more grateful.

If I can give you advice, give it a shot. Do what you have to do.

264 A few of the things that make me happy:

My kids and the hilarious things they say.

My kids running to me and shouting "daddy's home" as soon as I walk in the door. They're still of that age and I will miss it when they grow out of it as I assume they will.

Annual meetup with a group of buddies from college days. It's the only time each year I see most of them.

The new Moron Health Club here at the AOSHQ. I had been thinking a lot about the need to get healthy and that first fitness thread Ace posted a couple weeks back was the final kicker to get me going. Glad he's making it a weekly feature.

Fishing - something I don't get to do often during this season in life.

Hunting - something I get to do less than fishing.

Snow days. Don't get them much in this part of Texas but they're fun when they happen. Everything, and I do mean everything, just shuts down. You get a mandatory day of rest. Unless you are an emergency services worker and you have to run around attending to the morons who thought it was a good time to find out if they have the skills to drive on icy roads.

Being back in Texas after some years living abroad in Virginia.

Reading books and having books. When the Zombie Apocalypse shuts the internet down I'll still have plenty of really good reading material.

Making good use of the #2A

Booze. Although I'm not drinking much of it anymore thanks to this new healthy lifestyle.

Music.

My truck.

Cranking music in my truck.

Lots of other stuff but that seems like a long enough list for now. Gotta get back to reading y'alls comments.

265 >>And of course, my loving wahine of almost 36 years who makes it all possible.

Wahine is the name of my best friends Bertram.

Which brings me to what makes me happy. Besides pretty much every dog on the planet but especially every single Golden, the ocean. Swimming in it, diving, fishing, sailing, just watching it. I can feel my blood pressure drop when I am away and return to the ocean.

And beer. And rum. And steak. And wahines.

316 As the Horde knows, I have had a tough time since last fall when the fiance's cancer came roaring back and he died on December 3rd after a 26 day stay in the hospital. So I planned a trip to Europe, in which low BP made me fall literally on my face in a Paris street requiring visits to 3 separate European hospitals including a very weird 5 days in an Italian village hospital. So long story short, I am actively looking to restore joy to my life...it will not replace the joys of loving and being loved, but, it will make the days better.

So my happiness regime includes:

Counting my blessings.

Painting every day.

Sleeping when I can--the nights are very difficult, so I am becoming a day sleeper.

Paying it forward when I can.

Eating well, in particular, enjoying good GF food when I find it. The GF food in Italy was amazing.

Dancing, I joined a singles group, and since I grew up outside of Chicago dancing to the Motown sound, I don't do the same dances as these folks, so beginning Tuesday night, I am taking group dance lessons to learn East Coast and West Coast Swing and to learn the waltz better.

Knowing that even though I am not in love, I am loved. When I needed help after my fall in Europe, my niece and her husband dropped everything, including blowing off a trip to NYC with their son and friends, to come help me.

It's not a test. I don't think so anyway. You can change. You have to be committed, no doubt, but you can absolutely change. I also don't think that happiness is a reward that we have to wait for or that is something that we have to deserve. I do however believe that it may be possible that if we believe it is something we have to wait for or deserve, we may wait a very long time to receive it. My suggestion is to instead, go out and find it. The hunt for it may make you every bit as happy as finding it.

As someone who's been clinically depressed for about 30 years, I don't know that I can agree with his perspective.

327 Cars are fun. I hate it that the Government is f'ng them up. Won't be long before they ban steering wheels.

I'm amazed that it's possible to go out there and buy 400, 500, or 600 hp cars!
Back in my hot-rodding days, if you added a dual point distributor, an aluminum intake manifold, some headers, hi-perf coil and maybe tweaked the rear end gears a little, you were fast.
Now I watch a little 'Street Outlaws' from time to time, and I can't believe how much it's all changed.

Vegetable gardening (and defending same from the deer.)

335 Even though I live in New York City, my apartment is right next to Inwood Hill Park. Uptown Manhattan. It's a huge uncultivated forest next to a marshy pond off the river, filled with waterfowl, rabbits, we even have some coyote now. I jog in there at least 3 or 4 times a week, and I love trying to identify as many trees and birds and plants as I can. It makes me totally forget I live in a big city. When I feel unhappy, I get into the woods and I feel better in a few minutes, and it stays with me for the rest of the day. That makes me happy.

336 I started sliding into retirement a couple of years ago. Left a C-suite position at a small company. Took on a couple of part time, minimum wage jobs doing something I love to do. That has made me immensely happy. So, lack of the business, regulatory pressure plus doing something meaningful along with good health and time with the family make me very, very happy.

And Golf.

338 Giving up my job that I loved when all I was doing was fighting, stressing, struggling to hold on to it and battling a$$hats above me who understood nothing about my job. Letting go and moving on made me happy.
And Crossfit - being 49 yo female able to do pull ups and move incredible amounts of weight. Happy. And the Crossfit Games this week have made me happy. Watching 14-65 yo's from all walks of life and persuasions leave it all out there and supporting each other while doing it.

339 Having sex with my wife. It's not only a great deal of fun, but when I do a decent job of things, it gives me a great feeling of accomplishment.

Making a few good cocktails for friends, and drinking them.

Roasting, grinding, pressing, and drinking good coffee.

Bach's The Art of the Fugue.

And honestly: Just getting out of bed in the morning. Just drawing breath. Yep, I'm a goddamned atheist, but I still have a sense of gratitude for the gift of life and awareness. I think I've felt this way always, but maybe more so after reading Hitchen's last book, Mortality, a few years ago.

344 Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. Simply messing... about in boats - or with boats. In or out of 'em, it doesn't matter. Nothing seems really to matter, that's the charm of it. Whether you get away, or whether you don't; whether you arrive at your destination or whether you reach somewhere else, or whether you never get anywhere at all, you're always busy, and you never do anything in particular; and when you've done it there's always something else to do, and you can do it if you like, but you'd much better not.

359 Happiness ? The Spirit of the wondrous woman that sparked this thread reaches out to me. At 27 I went out with someone who instructed me that I have a "Problem with Gratitude"; I'd always been grateful about many aspects in life that the other party just took for granted -- simply the gift of "Being" for starters -- music another, where at 12 I taught myself guitar by ear. I started out in high school as a janitor in a church taking pride in my work and during which the humble pastor unintentionally became a wondrous and profound lifelong mentor; worked my way through college, graduate, music, and law schools. Again, the mystery of Happiness... In a publishing project I found a profound quote that I later saw in a wonderful book called "What is God Like?" by James V. Schall: "And if any of us or all of us are truly optimists, and believe as Browning did, that existence has a value wholly inexpressible, we are most truly compelled to that sentiment, not by any argument or triumphant justification of the cosmos, but by a few of these MOMENTARY and IMMORTAL sights and sounds; a gesture, and old song, a portrait, a piano, and old door." -- G.K. Chesteron. To my astonishment, because of that quote in Schall's book about God my name appeared in a footnote. ...maybe I was on the right track... Then still much later in life in an incredible book by Romano Guardini kindly given to me by a fellow Chestertonian, I came across a sentence that stopped me in my tracks; "Ingratitude is the enemy of Grace." Now, at 66, looking back, in life, I followed my heart; I devoted considerable time and energy to three areas that I loved and studied somewhat seriously: Political Philosophy, Law, and Music; I've co-published 5 books and composed over 50 pieces of music in styles from Bach to post-Steely Dan Rock and Contemporary Jazz; I've had my own private teaching studio for 35 years, and have a small but incredible library of old books that most people would just use as door stops or simply throw away. Foremost of which I've been blessed with a wonderful wife and a gorgeous and happy seven year old son. Looking back, from my youngest years I think my happiness derived from simply being grateful for being alive, for being treated lovingly -- and for the countless other important momentary yet eternal "things"-- that Chesterton mentions above -- also for what Eliot called the "Permanent Things". Along with that Gratitude there is miraculous connection to the many Graces of God. I would guess that the women who inspired this thread lived a life filled with that same Gratitude and Joy.
