Saturday Afternoon Chess/Open Thread 07-23-2016 [OregonMuse]

knight cartoon.jpg

(thank you to an anonymous moron for the cartoon)

Good afternoon morons and moronettes, and welcome to the Saturday Afternoon Chess/Open Thread, the only AoSHQ thread with content specifically for all of us chess nerds who pay homage in the temple of Caïssa, goddess of stalemates and perpetual checks. And, for those of you who aren't nerdly enough for chess, you can use this thread to talk about checkers, or politics, or whatever you wish, only please try to keep it civil. Nobody wants to get into a pie fight on a Saturday afternoon.

Nothing too fancy.

This is the ending of a very famous game which you more experienced morons will no doubt recognize.

Religion and Chess

Interesting blog post:

At one time or another, chess was forbidden by Muslims, Roman Catholics, Anglicans, Jews, the Puritans, and most recently by the Taliban. Chess (shatranj) was a legal issue after Mohammad died in 642 and in 655 his son-in-law disapproved of the game for his sect of Muslims because he believed the carved figures of the chess pieces were graven images. In 780, the caliph al-Mahdi wrote to Mecca religious leaders to give up chess played with dice. In 1005, chess was banned in Egypt and all the chess sets and pieces were ordered to be burned.

The relationship between the two has certainly been spotty; on again, off again.

On:

In the 16th century, St. Teresa of Avila was proclaimed patroness of chessplayers by church authorities in Spain.

Off:

In 1981, chess was forbidden in Iran by Ayatollah Khomeini but he had a change of heart in 1988 and decided to allow it. Chess was forbidden by the Taliban in Afghanistan for 15 years.

White To Play And Win

This is a fun one. White mates in either 2 or 3, depending on your path through the decision tree.

20160723 - White to play and win.jpg
FEN: [6nk/1R6/4NnP1/8/8/1p6/r5r1/4KR2 w - - 0 1]

Extra style points if you fill out all the nodes on the decision tree. Or, perhaps I should say, all of the nodes I have found.

Fischer's Last Days In Iceland

I thought this 2008 article about his death -- and the subsequent legal scuffling over his estate -- was worth reading. I never knew he was actually, formally, married, with a certificate and all, at the time of his death. The article refers to Miyoko Watai as "a chess grandmaster", but that's not quite correct, she's actually a Woman International Master, not a GM. This sort of thing bothers me. If you're a journalist doing a story on chess, you should familiarize yourself with the subject matter enough to learn that the word "grandmaster" is not a synonym for "really good chessplayer".

In 2011, the Icelandic courts ruled that Watai was Fischer's widow and legal heir. This was against competing claims by some of Fischer's stateside relatives as well as a Filipino woman who claimed Fischer was the father of her daughter. To validate this claim, they actually exhumed Fischer's body to do the DNA tests, which came back negative.

And all of this because Fischer couldn't be bothered to leave a will. Actually, I think I would have been surprised if he had.

Endgame of the Week

20160723 - Endgame of the week.jpg
FEN: [8/8/8/8/8/3pk3/8/3RK3 w - - 0 1]

The best Black can hope for here is a draw. He wants to trade his advanced pawn for White's rook. White, of course, wants to capture the pawn without having to trade his rook for it. Can he do it? Yes, he can. It's White to play and win.

Bonus Endgame

Because the original EotW sucked.

20160723 - Bonus endgame.jpg
FEN: [R2K4/8/3k4/2R5/8/8/8/7r w - - 0 1]

It's White to play and win

___________

Solutions Update:

White mates in 1

1.g5#

It's always fun to deliver a checkmate with a lowly pawn, especially in the middlegame.

White mates in 2

Queen sac!

16.Qb8+ Nxb8
17.Rd8# 1-0

This is the conclusion of the consultation game played by Paul Morphy against the tag team of Charles, Duke of Brunswick and Count Isouard, at the Paris Opera House during an intermission, 1858.

Not too long afterwards, Morphy went nuts. Getting constantly stiffed by a cowardly Englishman will do that to you.

White To Play and Win

So the key move here is

1.Rh1+!

There are two possible Black responses, Rh2 and Nh7.

If 1...Nh7 then 2.Rhxh7# (or 2.Rbxh7#)

If 1...Rh2 then 2.Rh7+ Nxh7 3.g7# (or 2...Rxh7 3.g7#)

Endgame of the Week

1.Kf1

White basically has to wait for Black to do something.

1...d2

Black has nothing better.

2.Ra1 Kd3

Black can also try 2...Kf3 but then 3.Ra3+ Kg4 4.Rd3 wins

3.Kf2 (not 3.Ra3+? Kc2 and it's a draw)

3...Kc2
4.Ke2 Kc3

Black's only move.

5.Rd1 and White succeeds in grabbing the pawn and the win.

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board.

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

The big cheating thing with these "mates in 2" or "mates in 3" puzzles for me is that I'd just stare at the board haplessly with no idea at all if there was a chance of checkmating unless the puzzle was identified that way. If you didn't say "White mates in 2," I'd just start wandering around the board, advancing my pawns and vaguely trying not to lose.

Well yeah, that's the big weakness in these problems. When you're playing an actual game, no one is going to be holding up a big sign for you saying "Mate in 3"

However, there's a moron who gets on here occasionally, Golfboy I think is is his nic, who's published a chess book of 600 problems, and there's literally no instructions other than it's White to move or it's Black to move, and you have to figure out what to do.

Pro tip: "++" means double check. Checkmate is designated by "#", as in

3.g7#.

Posted by: OregonMuse at July 23, 2016 07:26 PM (tEhtH)

++++

That's not a hard and fast rule.

A move that places the opponent's king in check usually has the symbol "+" appended. Or sometimes a dagger () is used, or the abbreviation "ch". Double check is commonly indicated the same as check, but is sometimes represented specially as "dbl ch", or in older books as "++". The Encyclopedia of Chess Openings omits any indication of check.

Checkmate at the completion of moves can be represented by the symbol "# " (some use "++" instead, but the USCF recommends "# "). Or the word mate is commonly used. Occasionally the double dagger () is seen. Checkmate is also represented by "/=" by Apple Inc.

Since the ++ can be used to mean either double check or checkmate, it is less ambiguous to use # for checkmate, but ++ is not incorrect.

91 I finally figured out the 3rd one, took me awhile to realize black couldn't play 1. RH1+, RH2, 2. RH7+, RH7, 3. G7+, RG7 because the room is pinned.

Don't understand the difficulty with the rook and pawn ending, seems like an easy white win. Why can't white play 1. RA1, D2+, KD1 followed by RA2, take the pawn and yada yada. Or 1. RA1, KE4 or anywhere, 2. KD2 followed by RA3 then RD3 and so on.

I think I've figured out what you're saying, but you're using the terminology in a confusing way. '#' means checkmate in algebraic. I think you're saying 'check' in which case it's '+', or if you're really going old-school descriptive, it's 'ch.'

Also, knight is either N, or, old-school, 'Kt'

Put your last move P-Kn4 mate, not sure where the 4 comes from, don't you mean P-N7 mate?

125 As the game progressed, the two allies conferred loudly enough with each other, debating their moves against the American genius, that it attracted the attention of the opera performers. Madame Penco, who had the role of the Druidic priestess in Norma, kept looking into the Duke's box, to see what all the fuss was about, even as she was performing the opera. Then the performers who were the Druids, marched about, "chanting fire and bloodshed against the Roman host, who, they appeared to think, were in the Duke's box", Edge recounted.

129 Yglesias comment was: "If you're ever playing chess against Peter Thiel, use the Sicilian defense: [link to stupid article]."

In other words, I, Matt Yglesias, world's greatest polymath, somehow figured out that the Sicilian defense is one of the several possible responses by black to P-K4, and, for reasons I decline to explain, such a strategy will always be successful against Peter Thiel.

Because Peter Thiel will be totally thrown off guard, apparently expecting his opponent to fall for the Fool's Mate or Scholar's mate, never having encountered the Sicilian defense despite having reached near-master status.

Now, as I reach my mid-forties, I am being paid back by watching my Father's diminishing mental state.

My Moral Compass now has God's magnet throwing him off.

I know what I must do and I am there for him because I was taught, (by my Father), a foundation of math, service and God.

Please pray for my Father, who goes in for angioplasty and stenting for the second time in November.

The 90+% blockage wasn't even "a thing" before he got on a treadmill in early June.

He's been walking, for his cardiovascular health, since the first operation in June.

I'd appreciate the prayers from all of you, as I am worrying more and more for this beautiful man's health.

When your Superman starts to falter, I know that most of you know the process. I am just starting to contemplate my Father's mortality.

Pray for me, as well. I haven't cried, nor lost any Faith yet. I ask of your collective strength to buoy me through these trying times.

I'll ask again in November.

-Thank You
...all of you.

I say "proud" because I have embarked on the project of luring some liberal cow-orkers and acquaintances into the arms of the Libertarian ticket. (These are people who would NEVER vote GOP but really, really don't like Clinton.)
Anyway, she was my first easy mark, the first sure conversion from I'll-have-to-hold-my-nose-and-vote-Hillary to oooooh-I-loooove-Gary.

The only problem is that my sinister scheme entails pretending that I too am swooning for the Pothead. When this broad gets going I feel like I'm stuck keeping undercover in a Justin Bieber fan club or something.

Eh. If I can turn one vote away from the Bitch, it's worth it.

May our Heavenly Father hold your father in the palm of his hand.

I know three people that have had heart attacks this year.
One is 65, and was some overweight, and checked himself into the hospital from work (I pleaded with him to let me drive him). He had a stent in 20 minutes after he checked into Emergency.

One is 55 and thin, but he's a smoker. He had a heart attack at home, and his wife and neighbor revived him (CPR) after his heart stopped. The EMT's revived him twice on the way to the hospital. He's back at work.

The third guy was a friend of the company, a financial adviser. Had a fatal heart attack on vacation with his family in California. Very nice guy, a real tragedy. I think he was 66 or 67.

My Dad was the most peaceful, calm, kind man you could ever hope to meet. He had Alzheimer's and Dementia horribly, and during the last few months, every time I'd visit him, he'd call me a "bastard", and slap my arm or hand away whenever I got close to him.

I'd just grab him and hug him and say: "This is your son, Bob, and I'm here because I love you. You're the best Dad, ever, and I'm proud to be your son."

Then he'd calm down again, give me a little grin, and then look off into the distance, the way he did.

The last few weeks of his life I was closer to him than I'd ever been, and even though he was orbiting a completely different planet, mentally, in a very eccentric orbit, he knew he was loved.

That's about all you can ask for.

261 Bonus Endgame

1. Rh5, blocking the Black mate threat at h8, and unleashing his own mating threat with 2. Ra6++. Black has several way to get out of the mate threat:

a) if 1...Rxh5 2. Ra5+ wins the black rook with a skewer attack and leaves White with a King and Rook vs. King endgame, an elementary win.

b) 1...Kc6 or 1...Ke6. In which case 2. Rxh1 leaves white with a King and two Rooks vs. King endgame, an even easier win than a) above.

c) 1...Rb1. After which 2. Ra6 Rb6 3. Rxb6++

And finally

d) 1...Rc1. White has 2. Ra6+ and after 2...Rc6 to block, 3. Rh6+ wins the black rook via a skewer again, and again leaves White with King and two rooks vs. King as in b) above.

I think that is an older one. I think the new one has something about organ harvesting if the kill is fresh enough.

354 261 Bonus Endgame

King endgame, an even easier win than a) above.

c) 1...Rb1. After which 2. Ra6 Rb6 3. Rxb6++

And finally

d) 1...Rc1. White has 2. Ra6+ and after 2...Rc6 to block, 3. Rh6+ wins the black rook via a skewer again, and again leaves White with King and two rooks vs. King as in b) above.

++++

You skipped a move with a)
should be
a) if 1...Rxh5
Ra6+; Ka5
then Ra5+ with the skewer attack.

Nicely done. I know you had it on your end, just left out a step typing it up.

I know, I know.

Thought it looked wrong too -- but this point, figured the end of a 6 hour old chess thread wasn't the place for presentation portfolio quality work.

So, let spellcheck just have that one.

There was one here in AZ I stayed at multiple times because they had insanely low rates $25. It was actually ok. No roaches, no fist fights, and no hookers. Not your average Super 8.

365 Amateurs....that's not how it's done....

The quicklime thing doesnt work the way folks seem to think it does. Often, it cam end up mummifying the intended.

And woodchippers are a bitch to hose out.

No, it's straight up sulfuric acid in a confined, controlled environment, followed by careful grinding of any residues.

367 i am not seeing the win on white to win ... the rook can take the pawn and it just continues ( for a while anyway )

the second solution doesnt appear to conclude the game.
g7 still has black rh7 to deal with ??? am I wrong ? ( seems to be my thing today )

369 For endgame of the week, isn't it just
1.Ra1 d2+
2. Kd1 Kd3
3. Ra3+ Ke4
4. Kxd2

Am I missing something?

no, because that rook can't move. It is stuck at h7 because of the white rook on h1. Rxg7 would actually be an illegal move.

If you wish, drop me an email and we can discuss this, and I hope I can clear things up. I post my email address at the end of every thread, so you can find it there.

373 330 and 354. Yeah, you're right, I typed it up too fast and skipped the intermediate 2. Ra6+ K any the 3. Ra5+ winning the black rook.

Duh, me.

Posted by: Evan3457 at July 24, 2016 03:17 AM (XSLU2)

374 On the White-to-play-and-win, I see now what you meant by the mate-in-2, OM, but 1...Nh7 is such an obvious loser I didn't even consider it for Black.

Why did you not offer 1...Nh6 2.Rb8+ Ng8 3.Rxh6# in your solution?

With best play by Black, it's still a mate-in-3.

So Peter Thiel is a master, hmm.. interesting. But he's rusty! He hasn't played a rated game in over ten years! His knowledge of Najdorf theory is probably woefully out of date. We have a chance! What would it take to get him into a tournament again, do you think? Probably retirement, if people like him even believe in such a thing.

Posted by: Philip at July 24, 2016 06:51 AM (Sowwm)

375 On the White-to-play-and-win: So simple with the other rook, I forgot about the pawn preventing the King from moving if pieces are traded. A real duh, moment. Thanks for clarifying for me.

376 Late to the thread, but thinking of you and your Dad, Slap.

I went through it with my Dad. During the last months, he didn't recognize me but seemed to view me (I think) as a friendly, supportive presence.

The day he passed away, when I entered his room for the last time he wasn't able to move or speak, but his eyes opened wide and riveted on me. I think he died in peace.

It was a sad, crazy ride towards the end, but I think about what raising a kid is like. That's kind of crazy too in a way. No roadmaps, they just did their very best, always.

All I can say is, hang in as best you can, and try not to leave anything on the table as far as being there for him goes. Some things we only get one shot in life at.

All the best to both of you.

Posted by: RM at July 24, 2016 02:25 PM (U3LtS)

377 Talking about Slap's Dad on the chess thread reminds me: The first chess set my Dad got for us had hollow plastic pieces that got knocked over and scattered on the board all the time when he and I played.

So we went to the hobby shop, got some plaster of Paris, and filled all the chess pieces. Worked great and was a fun little project we did together.

The things you remember.

Posted by: RM at July 24, 2016 02:37 PM (U3LtS)

378 I'm confused by the solution to your first endgame. The rook can just move away, and on the next move the white king will be next to the pawn.

Posted by: MikeN at July 24, 2016 05:34 PM (o/eHL)

379 For the one with the black king at h8, first white must check with his rook at h1, then black blocks with rh2. That's followed by rook to h7 check, and then it doesn't matter which piece black takes with, either the knight or the rook, because white capture with the h8 rook and then when black recapture, white advances the pawn to g7 mate.
