American Satisfaction in Country Drops from Horrific 29% to Abysmal 17%; Right-Leaning #SmartSet Complains Trump's Tone Was Too "Dark"

Fingers on the pulse of the national mood, these guys have.

Last night I observed of the #SmartSet's (and CNN's) finding that the speech was "too dark:" "I congratulate those of you living in comfortable circumstances that many Americans do not."

Various geniuses -- geniuses because they had the acumen to open a Twitter account -- pronounced that a good convention speech should have "uplift" in it. Many -- including the dummies at CNN -- contrasted Trump's speech unfavorably with Reagan's "Morning in America" theme.

Here's the problem with that: It's fucking stupid. "Morning in America" was Reagan's 1984 election theme. That was the happy, uplifting campaign, because the country was doing well and Reagan already had the job as presidency.

OF course he's going to paint an uplifting picture! If he painted a "dark" picture, he'd be criticizing himself.

But what was his 1980 theme, when he was the insurgent, trying to kick Jimmy Carter out of office?

Well: It was a searing indictment of America under Carter. It was, in fact, dark.

And how could it not be? You can't convince a country to make an abrupt change in direction until you have convince them that the present circumstances are no longer tolerable.

This is obvious.

But our genius #SmartSet doesn't get it.

One of the reasons they're plugging for this ridiculous theory is that it serves to push their Water-Fueled Robot Boy favorite, Marco Rubio, a famous happy-talker.

As I said many times: One of the problems I had with Rubio was his sunshiney-everything's-happy tone. If everything is sunny, shiny, and happy, Marco, why would I bother changing the current political team in charge of the country?

If they have America in this swell of a shape, why shouldn't I keep them in charge?

Anyway, if you don't believe me about Reagan, here's his 1980 convention speech. Not his sunny "Keep me office" 1984 speech; this is his dark, angry "this other guy sucks and is destroying everything" 1980 speech.

By the way, the #SmartSet is angry because Trump, by "running down" America, seems to be saying America isn't great right now. And it is, darn it!!!

Reagan's 1980 campaign theme? "Let's Make America Great."

As if it wasn't so great under Carter. As if it needed to be made great.

And just remember this the next time you get your information from CNN or the slightly more liberal GOP #SmartSet.

So here you go: Here's that sunny, uplifting, Gee Isn't America Doing Swell Under Jimmy Carter speech Reagan gave in 1980. Feel the Rubibot Happytalk.

8 I think it's going to be fitting torture for them to not only have to watch Trump undo all their shit, but for the media to have to report how amazingly better things are. I know, you don't think they'll report the truth of it, even if you think good things are coming.

I doubt that many of them are very right-leaning, at all. They are probably just horrified that the idea of the nation-state with real borders and sovereignty and all that old-timey stuff is still a thing with some peasants.

And Trump was pretty easy on Barky and all that he has done to sabotage us and destroy the West. Trump was more concerned with just pointing out the parts that he could blame Shrillary for, which doesn't even begin to cover the probelms.

I did get a kick out of the fact that a lot of the people in that convention hall were supporters of some of the worst shit - like the out-of-control non-budgeted feral government expenditures, the eradication of all notions of borders and the rest. But Trump was nice and didn't go into the complicity of the Vichy GOP.

14 The Smart Set lives in a Beltway Bubble. The most prosperous counties in the country are around the D.C. area. Inside there, things are going great. A clueless, let-them-eat-cake bunch living off the rest of the country by taxing and debting it to death and living off that largess.

It's just like feudal lords, which was pretty much the sorry story of human civilization, a tiny minority of rulers rule over a peasant population with an iron fist.

Anyone with any sense can see this country is on auto-pilot to economic ruin. But the ruling class doesn't see it. It's all crazy talk to them.

88 As I said many times: One of the problems I had with Rubio was his sunshiney-everything's-happy tone. If everything is sunny, shiny, and happy, Marco, why would I bother changing the current political team in charge of the country?

There's a difference between being optimistic about the future and being happy with the present. Even when the situation is grim people respond better to "Elect me and I will make things so much better" than "Elect me and I will try to stem the bleeding from the idiot currently in office".

Make America Great Again is a pretty good theme, and Trump should lean more on that.

116 >> He just took objection to Carter's whopping deficit of...$60 billion

This demonstrates a point I like to make, hammering on all the time to try to get people to grasp.

The debt train is on exponential growth autopilot. The debt doubles roughly ever 7-8 years, just a little less than two presidential terms. Thus any two term president is going to have the debt doubled under his watch.

The exponential growth comes from the fact the growth in federal spending is growing exponentially itself, and more importantly, at a faster rate than GDP.

An individual example. Your spending grows faster than your income, the difference going on the credit card. That always obviously ends badly.

Any, thanks to entitlements, the big one being health care spending in all the various federal forms, inflating at many times the rate of general inflation (at least the bogus CPI the Bureau of Lies and Statistics puts out).

THis is built into the system. That exponential debt growth is a feature, not a bug.

124 I've said it before, but I think the way this election is going to go is that the 18% that is undecided either is too embarrassed to say they are voting for Trump, or have had so much "Trump is stupid" crap tossed at them by the "smart set" that they haven't worked through their decision yet.

But at the end of the day, 80+% of thinks the country sucks and is going to vote to change in a different direction, no matter how weird the elites say it is.

No one looks at the country, says "this is a steaming pile of shit" and votes for more of it. Which is why speech controversies, Cruz boos, and every other shiny thing the media tries to get us to watch is irrelevant.

There is this poor girl who I have as a friend on Facebook. She is a little fragile and easily saddened by tragedies like today. She is posting a new "Sad and praying for _____" almost every day. You can't spin that away and pretend it doesn't matter because Pence defunded Planned Parenthood.

Which political opponents has Obama had murdered?
Which tens of thousands of people - judges, teachers, deans - has he purged?
Which neighboring democracies has he invaded?
Has he suspended all civil rights?

This is sorta besides the point. American Exceptionalism does not spring from any one person or administration but from the fact that our nation is unique because it was founded on a set of ideals and because of the nature of these ideals (ideals Trump neither understands nor cares about).

163 A facebook account of someone (Lukas) in Germany (now scrubbed) said police came to door of gunman, identified as Ali Sonboly. Unsure if police were at Lukas house or wut.

Not to be confused with Mo Somebody, I guess.

We'll see. People reporting that Sky News is big on right-wing theory. Shep is wetting himself on same theory and jack-boots, which seem to excite him very much.

And twitter scrubbed of a moose limb sounding name, Selina Akim, with a photo of a lovely lass, telling folks to come to McDonalds at 4pm. Scrubbed, and only one record of her twittering was this...about four twits.

Meanwhile, on Brietbart, there are photos of two non-German looking twits in their underwear, handcuffed and doing the perp walk. These photos appeared about 11 min after Merkel spokesperson said "not a terror threat" or similar. Perfect timing.

Video of a non-looking German on cell, in front of door at McDonald's, then opens fire. Have no idea, as he was outside and Muslim lady who said another was inside (the lulu snackbar report).

Israeli news now reporting 16 dead.

But he wrote some article about the beginning of the Reagan administration in Time or Newsweek or something like that (okay, it was 35 years ago), and his comment about the atmosphere in Washington was "dark and mean". Talkin' 'bout Reagan.

So that was the Soviet propaganda line in 1981.

See how things change? or don't as the case may be.

203 Bear In The Woods was '84.

Reagan needed to run ads like that because the left and the media were insistently beating on two huge drums all through his first term.

One, that the USSR was a perfectly normal country, a sort of hypertrophied Sweden, that just wanted peace and had good intentions.

And, two, that Reagan's military buildup, particularly the nuclear weapons side of its, was an insane and reckless gamble that was going to cause World War III if not reined in.

Bear In The Woods was actually brilliant semiotics and imagery when it came to these two points. Note, if you view it, how the narrator refers to controversy and confusion about the bear's temperament: point one. And how the hunter shown in the final frames of the ad is keenly and quietly observing the bear, but not actively confronting it: point two.

Which is why all the beta-male GOPe types got kicked to the curb by the primary voters. It is novel to have a presidential candidate that is not willing to have America take it up the squeak-hole for every damn thing.

I actually voted for Cruz in the Ohio primary but he couldn't "seal the deal" with the voters. It is unfortunate that Cruz's anger at Trump allowed him to loose sight of the bigger enemy to individual liberty: Hillary Clinton.

Posted by: Retired Buckeye Cop is now an engineer at July 22, 2016 07:06 PM (5Yee7)

206 I didn't listen to Cruz's speech so I only know he said "Vote your conscience" at some point. Well I will. I checked out the minor party choices and platforms back when it became clear that Trump was going to get the R nomination because I had some resistance to him.

I came to the conclusion that voting for Trump was the best choice I had. I'm not optimistic that Trump will tell many government brain dead bureaucrats "you're fired" as needs to be done but he is the only choice that would not have my conscience in turmoil and he has reassured the last 2-3 months with the Heritage list of potential SCOTUS picks, Pence as VP pick and some other bits.

I would push "vote your conscience" to any Bernie bots one knows of. They need to be convinced that if they do not hold the DNC accountable they will only get more Clinton style corruption and fraud in the future.

Laugh all we did a year ago at the escalator announcement, but here you are a year later, and this guy is still standing. Is he perfect? Show me one who is.
Yet Trump has taken the shots, and given it back. Yeah, Reminds me of Reagan in '80. The primaries reminded me of the missteps and almost-coulda-woulda of '76.
I've been reading Craig Shirley's books on '76 and '80.
Amazingly similar with what happened then and now. My "smart set" friends poo poohed the Trump primary run, and are now doing the same as he goes up the un-indicted Democrat nominee.
In 1980 it was neck and neck until Election Day. And the outcome eventually ended up in the plus column. The same, God willing will happen in November.

The point is that terrorism is an affront to civilization and must be squelched. So yes, we're ANGRY, not afraid.

My point is this. Constitutional Conservatives lost the 2016 election in Indiana. That was it. The GOP is now a big government, authoritarian party with a dangerous foreign policy. Conservatives like Cruz and Lee are more marginalized then ever before.

The goal is to try to take back the party as soon as possible or, at the very least, to keep Conservative principles somewhat visible. A big part of this is trying not to let people pretend Trump isn't what he is. People say they will vote for Trump only to stop Hil, but people don't like voting for someone terrible, so they start trying to justify Trump, to pretend.

As a Conservative, voting for Trump might make sense to stop Clinton. But you should feel utterly awful about it.

On foreign policy, I genuinely would like to hear arguments that Trump is better then Clinton. Because I'm not sure how electing a Putin puppet helps us.

Trump undoubtedly knows he has more strength/endurance than most people and has relied on that asset all his life. He was laying down a marker.

288 Trump reminds me of Reagan for two reasons.

1. One of Reagan's most effective quirks was his unprediictability. Bad Guys were always off balance because they didn't know what he'd do next. He didn't conform to the playbook of his predecessor.

2. Reagan was aware that he was running at a pivotal moment in history. The "Bear in the woods" ad was perfect for its time.

Trump needs a similar ad. It's not "the bear in the woods," though..

..it's 'Kicking the can down the road."

other than this, i think we agree he is a stupid boorish petty vindictive thin skinned man with mad dictatorial tendencies. the problem last night wasnt that the speech was dark. i love dark, im down for dark and i agree these times feel heavy with the apocalypse. besides that the speech was just bad, please step back and watch this man's body language and cadences. it's a tired observation by now that he has the strongman and autocrat about him but last night you'd just be blind to ignore what is developing in plain sight. this isn't a mentally stable man. sorry, there you go. many are dismissing these signals as mere schtick. nothing about donald trump says anything other than we are getting a strongman national socialist autocrat if we elect him. to dream for better is only a gamble. a gamble we must take because, as you explained so well the other day in your piece about the never trumpers, now is a time for choosing one's poison. but lets not even for a second flinch from diagnosing donald trump so that we know what is coming. hillary is similarly dictatorial and authoritarian, loves the big ass state, corrupt and a progressive leftist. so we will go with trump, but we are getting a poisoned chalice. he delivered a dark speech yes, but it wasnt dark with hints of light that showed we were going to be led into sunlit uplands. this man is a caesar, i dont care if that sounds goofy. he will have to be dealt with in some yet unknown fashion if he obtains the presidency. i say the man we saw last night isn't mentally well. i'd even go with my gut and say he's dangerous. now the question is can we elect him, get what is good out of him, or better than hillary, and is the constitutional order still strong enough to keep him contained for four years. obama pushed against the system and we discovered it is almost non existent. he could have gotten more. trump will know no restraint and the system will be tested mightily. so yes, dark speech, fine. but from a freakish moron who would be chavez.

Dude, use some paragraphing and capitalization in your "wall o' text." Not using it makes you look semi-literate at best.

308 Usual disclaimer: I will vote Trump because I have no choice.

Yet

From Ivanka's and daddy Trump's speeches, all I foresee is more government. I hope I am wrong.

Love Reagan's line: Government is the problem.
Slapweasel, I loved your litany except the cilantro thing.

310 During Bush 2's term, I had liberal LIV tell me that America was in a horrible recession.

We were actually doing fine, maybe even the boom years.

But the media portrayed it as a recession.

Remember McJobs?
