My sister-in-law takes an inordinate amount of pleasure in dragging me out Christmas shopping when I'm in town for the holidays. To the point that she texts all her sisters "I'm torturing Cur, we're out shopping!"

Okay, I just looked it up and it's close to what I actually thought but didn't say: YOU place them. That's right, there's another years-old game called Ingress in which everyone is on either a red or a blue team and if your enemies or allies are in the area you can virtually do battle and such. Ingress busily logged all these locations for years and now they are Pokemon sites.

The demographics of PA are very different than VA which is why Trump is making the play. When I heard his speech last night I knew he was targeting PA over VA.

In a similar vein, I had a subordinate who came from the USSR. I'd lived in Europe for many years, and when I finally returned was blown away by the choice in an American supermarket (72 - I counted 'em - 72 types of spaghetti sauce!).
I asked him for his reaction. He said the first time he and his wife entered an American supermarket they left again - overwhelmed by the choices available.
I understood. I'd felt that way too, to a lesser extent.

That trend, in my hazy recollection, was due to the influence of new romance/synth of the time and was somewhat a deliberate thing, rather than just "oh, that sounds nice and modern". It was post 70's and post punk. I remember a definite pervasive attitude that solid drum/bass presence (and even exciting sounding guitar) reeked of "cock rock" or "pub rock" and was tres gauche. Some established bands aped this so as to sound more "with it".

I've got a Dell T5500 -- 2 4-core Xeon processors, 12G RAM. I figured I'd trick it out into a Xen machine, using CentOS as Dom0....'cause, bein' all security-minded and all, having security policies built-in to the distro sounded kewl. Besides, CentOS' install actually has an option for "Virtual Host" where they leave out the fancy GUI, Office, and other overhead stuff. Since I have stacks of 2T drives, I thought I'd boot and run off a Solid State Disk (SSD) and use 4 2T drives to set up a RAID 5 array, since this has been built into Linux kernels since forever -- and this box actually has places to put all the drives.
It seemed an opportune time to do this, since the cover story for the June 2016 Linux Magazine was "Tuning SSDs", and the fiancee was going to be away all day.
I figured that I'd do a "dry-run" on a regular disk to see how much room I really needed for Dom0, since Xen wants separate partitions for /boot, /, swap, and LVM for virtual clients.....and I wanted to have /boot, /, swap, and cache for the RAID array on my SSD, with the LVM stuff stuck out on disks.
So, I connect up a random 2T drive as my experimental
I also read the SSD tuning article in more detail, and it says that the first thing you should do is bring the firmware current.....which, for my SSD, is a lovely little Windows utility. So I check the Windows box I used to do this years' taxes.....and it doesn't have a spare SATA line to connect the SSD to. So I look for the Win7 computer that was sitting at the end of the couch waiting for me to find a video adapter from DVI to VGA.....but I can't find where I moved it to when the cleaners came through on Monday.
I decide that my best selection of hardware drivers is likely to be Debian, so download a web-install ISO onto this system right here, but when I went to burn it to a DVD, it couldn't find any writable devices.
Then I hard-switched the T5500 off, changed disks, stuck an old Debian disk I had around into the DVD, booted.....and the monitor says, "no signal".
To sum up, I started the day with a plan that seemed eminently feasible and a bunch of things that seemed to be working in my favor.....and ended-up with a collection of dumpster fires where even unrelated crap (missing Win7 computer, nonworking DVD burner on this computer) joined the Clusterfark Collective.

Yeah, sorry. I guess I was lucky my whole life and never had to worry about any health issues. Now it seems to be coming at me from all sides. Two weeks ago I thought bourbon and the ONT would fix things.
Fortunately - I think - this chiropractor who sent me for the x-rays runs a sports medicine practice. I get the impression he's - ??? - more than just an old-fashioned chiropractor. He's certainly been diligent so far. He's got me scheduled for an MRI next week. So - I appreciate the feedback, and he'd be my source for an orthopedist/neurosurgeon referral, at least at this point.
How bad could this surgery be?

of Ubuntu, I got up early (because I had been drinking the night before,
so rather grumpily), and I went to burn the newest ISO onto CD, but the
CD drive was busted and wouldn't open or close reliably, I had to use

Just gotta outlast the setbacks....I had to do the paperclip method myself a couple of times today, and -- of course -- my paperclip tool wasn't where it normally lives (in a certain mug on a "mug tree" adjacent to the kitchen [I used to have to use it regularly to clear obstructions in the drip caffeinator]....it had snuck into an adjacent mug [or the tree had been rotated]). More blood-pressure-spiking frustration that ultimately meant nothing.

It was when it came out, which made matters worse. That stuff was on the radio 24/7 and it was on the turntable at home all freakin' day as well. I have trouble sitting through Dark Side of The Moon due to a similar effect, but Breakfast In America was a whole other level of torture. I know when I go to Hell, old Nick has a copy of BIA waiting specially for me.

Well, the Linux Mint install on the desktop at my place in Arizona has been rock solid whenever I have used it. I have not had to fuss with it. My only issue was trying to install a printer driver I didn't need, because the printer driver I needed was native to the build.
I turn it on, it boots and it works. I have Pale Moon loaded, and I copied the bookmarks that I use here from my profile on this machine. So here I run Pale Moon on Win 7, and it looks like it looks. Go to AZ, fire up the Linux box, and it runs Pale Moon, and it looks the same. At my level of usership, Linux = Windows, as far as allowing me to use the box for my own purposes. It was not any kind of struggle, and I am not a Linux nerd by any stretch of the imagination.

I have around 600 running instances that were all installed using a couple of scripts I wrote 11 years ago. Some of them have been up for 1000+ days. (Hey, four digits, that's impressive right?)
Then there's my desktop, which for some reason mutes the headphone jack at boot time. Still haven't found a fix for that.
Depends on what you're trying to do, and how well you understand not only the problem, but the proposed solution.

Windows/Apple is like having a workshop for doing auto repair. It's compact, you understand that things are going to be coming in with four wheels and gasoline engines. You can fiddle, but not much. And if someone shows up with an RX-7, you might have trouble dealing with its Wankel rotary engine.
Linux is like having a workshop that can fabricate anything from a cyclotron to a nuclear submarine. You can use it for auto repair....but all the ATMs you use -- Linux; your home router -- embedded Linux; the internet backbone -- Unix (might by Linux now); the banking system -- Linux; the self-checkout kiosks at your local grocery -- Windows....which is why they're always rebooting them.
Its capabilities draw people in to fussing with it. You can do so much more. But you don't have to.
I'm spending a lot of time fussing with it because I didn't understand how much internet security resembled wet tissue paper. When Ira tagged me, I said that I'd rebuild secure and it would take me at least a year. It's taken me a bit over a year so far and I've got a decent understanding of how bad things are.....and roadmaps forward. Once I've build my citadel, I don't intend to fiddle with it nearly as much

Iranian guy shouts "Allah Ackbar" and shoots 10 people to death in a major European city -- and yet the media somehow manages to act like it didn't happen!
My internet connection is a bit wonky so for the first time in months I turned on the TV to see the 10 O'Clock News to see what had happened in Munich.
Instead, the first news story, for 8 solid minutes, is about Hillary's VP pick.
Then a two-minute story about the Trump-Cruz feud.
Ad break.
Then a 6-minute story about a grass fire in Vacaville.
Then the weather report.
The a story about Drayvon Green (basketball player?).
Ad break.
FINALLY, a story about what happened in Munich.
Except...
Except...
...except the story was a rebroadcast of some international network story (reporter had British accent) that said, in essence:
-- Shooting happened in Munich, 10 dead;
-- Motive unknown.
-- Someone heard the shooter say anti-immigrant sentiments.
-- This is the five-year anniversary of the Anders Breveik shooting in Norway, so now let's segue in a 3-minute description of THAT shooting five years ago.
-- Wrap-up, concluding with something about "racist violence" being "on the rise."
And that was it.
No mention of him being Iranian.
No mention that he said "Allah Ackbar!".
So that if you had gotten your news solely from this broadcast, you would have come away 100% convinced that it was a White Supremacist shooting.
So this inspired me to look into this claim about the shooter saying something anti-immigrant.
Luckily, my internet connection had started working a little better.
And lo and behold, I found the source of the claim -- this video posted to Twitter:

it purports to show a bystander on a balcony arguing with the shooter.
But it's in German, and hard to understand even if you know German, so someone (don't know who) posted this English-language purported translation to Pastebin:

Here's the crucial section:'
"Balcony Man: "You fucking Asshole you..."
Shooter: "Because of you I [unintelligible]..."
Balcony Man: "You cunt you. you're a cunt"
Shooter: "...and now I have to buy a gun to shoot you"
Balcony Man: "a gun fuck off your head isn't on right"
Shooter and Balcony man shouting at each other
Balcony Man apparently to people filming: "He's got a gun here the guy has one"
Shooter: "Shit/Fucking Turks!"
Balcony Man: "Shit/Fucking Kanacken" (foreigners basically)"
HOWEVER-- and this is the whole point of my comment -- although I don't really know German, I can sort of follow along the video with the transcription, and the part that supposedly goes "Shooter: "Shit/Fucking Turks!" " is just about inaudible, and it's not clear at all what the guy is saying, or even if it's him speaking.
So I believe the person who provided the translation just INSERTED what he WANTED the shooter to say, for political reasons.
And yet based on this one extremely dubious source, the entire MSM has spun this incident as NOT being Islamic terror, but right-wing hate violence.
And furthermore, since the gunman is Iranian, it's not actually surprising that he WOULD say (if in fact he did say) "Fucking Turks!", because Iranians do actually hate Turks, and vice-versa. Nothing to do with religion -- just an ancestral regional rivalry hatred dating back centuries, a rivalry they bring with them wherever they go.
If anything, it is the guy on the balcony who says "Fucking foreigners!" who is expressing the anti-immigrant sentiment. If the shooter was also anti-immigrant, then what are they arguing about? Makes no sense.
Anyway then I move to the next level of thinking -- about how to break the left's control of the media narrative. Because that's the real problem here, even more than Muslim terrorists: traitors and quislings have seized control of the national megaphone, and control the narrative 24 hours a day, and inevitably twist it to their advantage.
I have no easy answers. But shit like this makes me so angry that I quadruple my motivation and efforts to break the leftist/traitor stranglehold on the media.

If my muscles are going to ache, I want to know that it's for a project!
Just CANNOT exercise for the sake of it.

As an example of the sort of thing you can do with Linux but not with Windows.....y'know how you can go to Starbucks and see available Wi-fi networks to log into? And maybe join the one for the pizza place next door if it's got more bars?
Well, remember that both the Starbucks and the pizza place's wi-fi routers are running Linux. With a Linux PC, you can do the same thing in reverse.....and get a listing of all the users logged into the routers....and all the wannabe users not logged in yet. Wouldn't it be handy to know if there were 3 people logged into the pizza place and 20 logged into the Starbucks? Or, if you were sitting in the pizza place, you might be able to figure out which 3 people were online. You could do the exact same trick on two different antennas -- a directional and a directionless -- and get a bearing on everyone logged into a wi-fi router....and if that bearing pointed to your neighbor across the street, you'd know why your data limits were always maxxed out.
None of that is easy under Windows, but it's straightforward under Linux -- which is why people fiddle with Linux more.

I was in this band at the time and we found ourselves at the same bar as The Donnas after we had both played gigs in different venues that night. The Donnas had just been on SNL and were at the height of their fame, such as it was.
They were really fantastic young ladies. Three of them anyways, the bass player was sick and left early. But the rest of them partied with us all night. We exchanged merch (I bet they tossed our CD without listening to it!) and they treated us to trays of Goldschlager shots.

Germanium is currently priced at 1800 dollars per kilogram. When you consider that you could probably make at least 100 transistors from a gram of the stuff, that's only a few pennies per.
When it comes to semiconductors, it's not so much the scarcity of the raw materials, but the degree of purification, and subsequent doping that makes the wafers costly. Germanium was/is obtained from the flue gases of lead and zinc smelters.

While there were tons of female singers, Suzi Quatro was the first rock & roll frontwoman as far as I know. She played bass rather than guitar. She had some success in England, not so much in her native America.
I think she deserves a spot in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. She was an inspiration to other women who followed in her footsteps.

Yeah, the abundance is a very coarse first-approximation. Fluorine, for instance, is about #15.....but good luck getting it out of there. Copper is a bunch more rare, but a bunch more available.

Yep, and I have a large box of Beta movies along with a hi-fi Beta machine. A large portion of those old obsolete tapes are porn. They have joined by RCA video disk player and movies which is on the top shelf of my upstairs office closet. I still use the VHS tape player for a couple of old movies that I have not been able to find on DVD. But it sure is hard watching those after getting used to bluray.

I knew of her but the only song I really knew was 'Call Me Names' live from the Secret Policeman's Third Ball CD I'd bought. I recall a video of another song 'Drop the Pilot' was getting play for a while in the days when I still occasionally looked for stuff on MTV. My guess is her success was mainly in the UK and didn't ever blossom in the US as she didn't fit into any slot the machine was prepared to fit her into.

That first link talks about the first VCR marketed costing over $1,000. My first VCR was a Sony Betamax marketed under the Sears brand name. It was a heavy clunker that cost me about $1100 if I remember correctly. The remote was "wired".

As I recall, this was in the Bullocks department store in what was then called Fashion Square, at the south end of Sherman Oaks. People who've gone by on the freeway are more likely to remember the odd looking Sunkist building nearby. (It's been in a lot of TV and film, the last time I spotted it was in an episode of 'House.') Bullocks then was very upscale with some very elaborate interiors, like the escalator that passed you through a mirrored tube as if you might be going on a far greater journey than just up or down a floor. Although by the time I was old enough to be driving myself around I tended to ignore Fashion Square for its severe lack of tech stores to check for good markdowns.

Hi, Deety. Nothing good I'm afraid. All too often these days, if I don't have something I'm obligated to do in the morning, not just something I SHOULD do, I feel everything is utterly hopeless. Or even if the world is generally alright, I'm a failed bit of it that will soon be swept aside.
Employment prospects for anything I've ever studied or trained for is severely lacking. I'm either way short of the level of know-how needed or there just isn't much happening in the area. The people I've worked for on and off for many years are probably never going to get their shit together. This includes one of my closest friends, which makes it very hard to say I cannot be part of this anymore, especially when there isn't any place else to go. But this sort-of job has, I suspect, made it easier for me to avoid reality and taking whatever reliable work I could get in hopes of at least not being a dependent until I'm too old to do anything of value to anyone. I'm expecting a lot of people in my generation, especially those who are childless, are going to be declared excess to needs by a world where entire classes of employment are eliminated by automation.
I just cannot see how the next few decades play out without something globally disastrous, leaving the body count of WWII far behind, coming about.
But that's just me.

The lot this K-mart was on was awful. The store was essentially on top of a small hill, which meant the driveways were very steep and nearly the whole parking lot was at a very noticeable slope. That store was among the first to be closed many years ago, possibly when I still lived in Thousand Oaks (I moved away in 1996) and nothing has ever been done with the site since. The parking lot is in ruin and I wouldn't be surprised to hear the building was too far gone to ever put back in use. They'd have to demolish it and cart off the material just to start from scratch. So anything that might be done is starting with a severe cost handicap.
