Been mercifully unplugged from most of the RNC dumpster fire. Sounds like Sheriff David Clarke gave a really good speech, Cruz is playing the long game and Trump's people set him up, and I haven't actually heard anything substantial about Trump's speech tonight.
I hope and pray that in 2 decades I'm going to look back from a still free country and see that Cruz's 2016 is the redux of Reagan's 1964/1976 trajectory.

I saw a post from you earlier today.
My BIL just finished up treatments that sound exactly like what you described. Took his own bone marrow, chemo treatmentS for him, then replant his own marrow. Long, painful process.
Only, not for MS, but for a rare bone cancer (maybe blood? - I know leukemia is not it).
Anyway, so far, word is he is doing great. More tests in a day or so, but as of now, the treatment sounds like cutting edge stuff with positive results. Zero cancer detected so far.
I wish nothing but the best for you and yours, and will pray.

But I was sad to hear about Ace possibly giving up blogging. That is sad. This place really is unique among the dextrosphere, I think. Ace has amazing tolerance for all of his guests. Most places on the right, it seems, will not hesitate to ban you if you say something even a little bit crosswise about whomever is the site's patron daddy figure, whether it be Trump, Cruz, Rubio, whomever. Ace isn't like that at all. But I can see how it can also be frustrating when others come here with that same tribal mentality and don't get along that well. Chi, I have actually gotten better at cooking. I got the Bittman cookbook and he has step-by-step recipes for really simple dishes that are obviously simple once you are done, and you realize, "hey I didn't really need a recipe for this, I understand what the different parts do..." and it is really helping me.

Sadly the Fapplebee's in my area has gone downhill. The wait staff just looks bored and useless on most days, except the bartender, who knows me by name. (And no the bartender is not Woody.) They've blocked ports on their router that don't allow me to do work at the same time as procrastinating here, so it's more inconvenient. And the food really isn't all that great. Except the Fiesta Lime Chicken. That one is pretty good.

The classic "three letters" joke has a CEO cleaning out his office after the Board fires him. The new CEO comes in, and the old CEO says, "you're thinking you're on top of the world now, but let me show you this." The old CEO demonstrates that one of the pictures on the wall is on a hinge, and behind it is a wall-safe. He hands the new CEO a slip of paper and says, "this is the combination. Within this safe are three letters. When things get out of control and you can't figure a way forward, open the safe." He then picks up the box with the rest of his stuff and walks out the door. The new CEO laughs it off as bullshit and sticks the slip of paper in his wallet.
Things go swimmingly for about a month -- and then the unions go apeshit and start talking about a strike, the stock price tanks, the SEC reveals that it's been investigating the company, and the company's main product line is found to cause disfiguring burns whenever there's a lunar eclipse. The Board calls a special session to discuss the CEO's plan, and he realizes that he doesn't have one.
After tearing his wallet apart and finding the slip of paper, he moves the painting and opens the safe, finding three envelopes bound together with a red ribbon. Separating them, he finds they are numbered "1", "2", and "3". Shaking a bit from the stress, he opens number one.....
....and finds a piece of paper that says only, "Blame the previous administration." So he goes into the Board meeting and explains that everything was much worse than originally believed because the old CEO was monstrous and horrible and had totally FUBAR'd things. His sensible management would soon turn things right. Sure enough, the unions caved, the SEC started chasing the former CEO, the Board relented, and scientific papers were published that seemed to link the disfiguring burns to "the solar plasma", and the stock rallied.
About six months later, the CEO again found himself under pressure -- there was a "white mutiny" among his senior management, the EPA issued a determination that the CO2 from his employees' exhalations was especially contributing to global warming, the company's main product was rated a "total ripoff" by Consumer Reports, and, of course, the stock price was tanking. The Board summoned him to another "executive session".
With no hesitation, he sprinted to the safe, pulled out envelope #2, opened the paper, and found the single word: "Reorganize." He drew up plans and charts and charts and plans -- everything that was done at the head office would be done at the branches; everything previously done in the branches would be done at HQ....
They'd reincorporate in Ireland and license their IP through Luxembourg. Their direct sales channels would go through distributors, but they'd open their exclusive distributor products to eBay.
And, just like before, the CEO's actions successfully beat back the chaos and the challenges....
As an experienced and grizzled CEO, despite his 29 years, it was another year before another round of crises laid siege to his company. The government had determined that hardwoods used by the company infringed some local law in Kazakhstan and seized them, he was personally named in a sexual harassment lawsuit by a former PR agent, the company's most profitable product was banned in California because it failed workplace diversity standards for trans bathrooms, and the stock price -- magnificent plumage!
So he strides confidently to the safe in his office, opens the door, and rips open the final envelope.....and reads: "Prepare three envelopes....."

I typed this long message about what I thought about Trump's speech, then I thought better of it and deleted it.
But
I was sad to hear about Ace possibly giving up blogging. That is sad.
This place really is unique among the dextrosphere, I think. Ace has
amazing tolerance for all of his guests. Most places on the right, it
seems, will not hesitate to ban you if you say something even a little

I bought the sous vide machine but you could do similar with a little math and science with a slow cooker on low and ziploc freezer bags. I mostly use mine for steaks because thickness is never the same so cook time on the grill is a crapshoot for perfect medium rare.

That's mostly the way Wikipedia tells it, except they have McCarthy changing Jules to Jude just because he thought it sounded better. Which makes sense, since the heightened concern about privacy with things like this is fairly recent.

I was wearing a t-shirt that had a giant walrus surrounded by anthropomorphic eggs running around on little feet at the supermarket the other day. The checkout bagger said that she liked my shirt but wasn't sure she "got it". I said, "y'know -- goo-goo-g'joob" and left.
I was halfway home when I realized how incomprehensible and condescending that probably sounded. Just last week, I tried to explain to her how the Beatles had created a "Magical Mystery Tour" special on the BBC in about 1966, that featured a psychedelic music video called "I am the Walrus" that was spectacularly weird, that "goo-goo-g'joob" was the chorus to the song, and that she should watch it on YouTube.
But, seriously.....when we're talking booze and boobs and freedom, we're all good -- but there's no end to the cultural references that fall between the cracks when Moron talks to Moron without knowing the era.

It was one of the many mergers that happened in the late 90s/ early 00s when the copier companies all merged and consolidated following the analog to digital transition.
I used to work in that biz. It was funny. There were giant warehouses in Mexico where all the copiers from Japan got sent. There were about 5 brands that got their stock from them. Once Mexico got the shipping order, they'd pull a machine and stamp one of the 5 names on the door and send it on. Meanwhile, as a sales jerk, you were telling customers that your machine was entirely different and better than the other guy's, when the only difference was what got stamped on the door.

Lanier, Ricoh, and Savin were three of 'em. Kodak was sold through Lanier but Poloroid did them in before all the copier craziness went down. Lanier also had a Konica product.
Now, all those are Ricoh. Konica Minolta merged along with Kyocera Mita. I think Sharp got sucked up in there too somewhere, kinda sorta. Xerox was all but bankrupt and I'm shocked they survived. We used to get clients who ran from Xerox when they couldn't even afford coffee in their offices anymore. Not a joke. Actually went out as a Corp memo.

I actually used to work in the faculty duplicating room at Long Beach City College as a student assistant, back in the 1980s. The copiers were huge; we had two of them, one of them was self-serve, and they both filled most of the room.
The copiers could collate, staple and even bind; *but* this was in the pre-digital, pre-memory days. If you wanted 30 copies of a document, the originals would circulate in the feeder basket 30 times.

I bought one of those waterproof cameras when I was in Puerto Vallarta so I could get some pictures from the hidden beach and snorkeling. I drove around to 3 or 4 different Walgreens when I got home before I got to one that still developed film in house.

The "list price" of all of it was about $84K. And the knee surgery and the stay in the rehab facility and you get close to that much again. So medical care for my mother, for roughly 2 months total in various facilities cost about $150K.
This is just ridiculous and shows the ridiculous inflation in the health care sector. Now, I'm sure Medicare and her supplemental won't pay that, some big contracted discount (this practice is itself a fraud, concealing true price discovery in the medical system), but it's still just mind boggling.

Their electronics and tape decks were top-notch. It's just that their speakers were horrific. If you listened to their stuff through Sennheisers, it was totally horrorshow -- but if you put it into a room through their speakers, it was dreck.

Leica is still out there. They've gone digital, but I think they still make real cameras.
For the money, though, you're better off getting a Fed - Russki copy of the Leica - every bit as good, and a damned sight cheaper. They're such good copies, you can even use Leica lenses on them, if you want.

Yup. I could understand the mistake that ended up being Mac/ Windows. No one had any conception of a personal computer back then. IBM dropped the ball similarly on lots of stuff. Xerox though... wow. They invented practically everything and had so many things right up to a go-to-market product... then sat there.
IBM. There's another giant that completely lost its way when it should have owned the world. I have no idea how they're still around either.
HP also. They still do okay business with their PCs but wow... they're nothing like they used to be. It's one of the reason I could never get behind Carly Fiorina. She didn't hammer the first nail but she went out and bought a nail gun for the rest of them. They went from some of the best products in the world to absolute shit that they get from discount shops in China.

I have a $800 Zeiss lens on a $250 Cannon Rebel body that takes amazing macro pictures. So yes the chips are kinda all the same but lenses can make a big difference.

All the copier companies struggled with that change though. When I was a Lanier, they had built the best training center in the business. They hire techs that were reasonably handy with a screwdriver for about $30K/ year and train them up on an ongoing basis. Then digital came along. Now you had to hire network engineers starting at $70k. The entire revenue model and cost structure went to shit while everyone kept swapping out leased boxes like nothing had changed.
Now they all pretty much give away the hardware at break even and the revenue stream is service/ supply contracts.

I dONT have the money to keep up with it, but I was partial to PPI (Precision Power) amps and Polk speakers. Believe it or not, Pioneer Super tuners were great - at least back when I cared enough to pay attention.
Back in 85 or 6, Sony actually made a 8" round 3 way speaker that blew any Infinity out of the parking lot. Fuck a 6x9. I don't know why they stopped making those...

They did, actually. There were Xerox systems in the Reagan White House during the first administration, before most people had ever heard of laser printers and the ability to set fonts and types sizes was like magic.
The Alto and Star were just far too costly and even at those price resources were so dear that they could be a hassle to use in the days when even plain text word processing ran into severe limits due to lack of memory. A cheap Android phone with a Bluetooth keyboard is immeasurably more usable than what those systems offered. But the promise they hinted at was amazing. Xerox just didn't have the patience to keep the development fed until they could deliver something that could break into the mainstream in terms of both price and functionality.

It used to drive me nuts when I was a lot younger. I was out at this horrible yet wonderful little hole in the wall strip club that a buddy and I used to frequent. After too many drinks and getting to know everyone, I finally got fed up one night and told the manager that I was going into their audo room to fix the EQ. It was a sad place that played the same tape on a loop all the time rather than pay a DJ.
Ended up grabbing music from my car and playing DJ that night. Ended up pretty popular with several of the strippers.

For the money, though, you're better off getting a Fed - Russki copy
of the Leica - every bit as good, and a damned sight cheaper. They're
such good copies, you can even use Leica lenses on them, if you want.

IBM thought it was stunningly generous of them to have it well below $1000. Meanwhile, Microsoft had people walking around the show floor handing out CD-ROMs of the Windows SDK. Although MS had been founded as a programming languages and tools company, they knew that getting people interested in developing for Windows shouldn't be treated as a profit center in of itself.

You live and you learn. Both Xerox and Lucent had a metric fuckton of value locked up in their IP vaults -- that neither managed to license nor exploit. Similarly, they were both on preferred vendor lists all across government/academia/Fortune 500....until they weren't. They could if the regulatory environment encouraged it. There are places in the world where you can shop for a surgical procedure in a way that is largely reserved for cosmetic procedures or LASIK here. This has created a medical tourism industry that caters to the more affluent citizens of nations who don't want to settle for the government's version of medical care.
The biggest obstacle is that so often these things need to happen RIGHT NOW. Which is why health insurance would be fine if it were reserved for catastrophic situations. An example that has been used is to imagine what car maintenance would cost if it were part of your car insurance and as extensive as health care policies. Instead of picking the place with a good coupon for the latest oil change, you're told who you can go to and don't have a direct retail relationship with the service provider. Instead, your car insurer is the payer and wants to push the price down as low as they can to make money on your policy. The oil change place doesn't want to do it that cheap, so they'll inflate their claimed cost at every opportunity to make the percentage the insurer pays something they can actually live with.
Every place the free market has been applied to health care the results have been pretty good but it is so incredibly touchy it's impossible to convince many people that their care will likely improve if they're more directly involved in the purchase.

Wind the clock back a ways. Doctors used to come to your house and make your prescription on your nightstand. If you didn't have money, they came anyhow and you'd give them a pie or a chicken if you got well.
Then government stared regulating the crap out of everything and the barn door opened up to giant compliance costs and endless lawsuits.
I know a doctor who had several occupational health clinics and wanted out entirely. We got to taking and he told me that a pack of sutures costs some outrageous amount. My response was, "I can get that at the craft store for less than a buck!". But, govenment mandates say you have to buy the individually packed, certified stuff. As if sterilizing a needle in China and marking it up 5000% for a government inspector makes it more sterile than a doctor in a lab.
There's a reason minute clinics, private ERs, and other cash driven healthcare is exploding. It's way cheaper, far better service, no bullshit and easier on everyone involved.
The core problem is the concept of actually paying for stuff is now discriminatory and hateful. The result is everyone cost 100x what it should, there is less off it, and the cost is born for many by increasingly few.

The simple fact is that Gates and others of his generation outside the big iron companies were more able to see what this technology could really mean to people on the individual level. DEC got it a little, being the upstarts who pushed what was then interactivity to make their mark on the world. The idea of real time interfaces was once considered a bit radical and terribly wasteful. Why would you want to give so much of the system to a single user, even th guy doing most of the coding?
If anything, Gates took a lot of crap from IBM before finally accepting they were never going to get it and the new young companies had to forge their destiny without the support or approval of the big iron makers. For several years, the amount of work put into OS/2 and Windows was very one-sided. OS/2 was the future while Windows was just a short term thing to let existing systems be useful as smart terminals to bigger systems. Eventually there would be desktops that were strong enough to fulfill all of the GUI dreams under OS/2.
But IBM didn't see it that way, outside of a small group within the Entry System division. They saw OS/2 as a way to keep the pesky micros from taking over and instead keeping them bound as extensions of the big iron. Just nicer terminals. The small computer business was caught between two extremes. IBM wanted to have boring terminals everywhere, where Apple wanted highly personal machines that were too pricey to ever reach the broader market and as Steve Jobs was dead set against licensing the platform to create a direct opponent to the PC, there was a gaping hole waiting to be filled. Microsoft resisted that for a long time, as it was hard getting the best devs interested in OS work when all of the glamour was regarded as being in applications. But somebody had to do it. Everybody else trying kept stumbling badly and not hitting the target. Companies like Commodore and Atari made stuff that was fun to mess with but couldn't reach enough to make the needed critical mass.
As Woody Allen once said, 90% of success is showing up. Any number of companies might have done it but all too often there was a failure to understand it needed doing. So a lot of it happened by default, giving the prize not for excellence so much as getting the least amount of things wrong.

I've had bad trips. You get through them. They're no fun (until you look back on them) and they just seem to go on forever ... but you get through them.
Frankly, the most intense trip I ever had was on shrooms. A friend brought a couple of bags of dried shrooms to us in New York. I asked her how many we should eat and she just shrugged, "I don't know, eat them." and I just ate handfuls and handfuls .... That was some night. The visuals were just out of this world. Literally.

Naw, it was almost entirely IBM's spec on OS/2. Some of the people involved have written books about their time in the trenches. One area that involved some major battle was trying to get IBM to make OS/2 more appealing to consumers. All IBM really cared about was having something they could easily use as a target to port stuff from the minis and mainframes in order to sell to the existing customers rather than the far greater market that was still largely untapped then. They tried to turn things around with OS/2 3 Warp but by then the other division had taken notice and were actively seeking to undermine the Entry System people at any opportunity, putting the future of their division ahead of the fortunes of the entire company.
The smart thing to do would have been to shift some types of development to the smaller systems while seeking new roles for the higher end machines. But that just wasn't the way they thought and the people whose job it was to defuse this kind of situation were alternately clueless or even encouraged the behavior in the belief that this infighting was somehow good for the company in the long term.

A friend took a six-month-old lab puppy in last week to have her spayed. The puppy' heart stopped after anesthesia was administered. They got it going again but she never came back out of it. She was euthanized day before yesterday.

From the article the escapee guy was playing with the truck. The guy who was trying to catch him to return him to the "hospital" was the one shot.
And like the previous shootings you have to be wary of the initial press reports. They are often inaccurate, if not outright lies. he LA shooting is a prime example. They are still not reporting that one accurately.

I think it is obvious. At least as a Trump supporter, that nobody is going to get everything that they want. Hell, we may not get half of what we want with Trump but what is clear to me is that the man will give his all to give me that 1/4 or 1//2 of what I want and that is a solid 1/4 and 1/2 of what we are getting now.

What I'm echoing is others points is the MSM and the Donks seizing on and sensationalizing gun crime in an effort to frighten people into enacting gun control.
I fully expect the MSM and the Donks to similtaneously try to say crime is down and any fear of it is a racist dog whistle and to hype certain crimes to push for more gun control.

Christians? Driven out, purged, by the howling mad new democrats who have found their place in the new democrat party (a.k.a. the GOP).
Where have the old fashion conservatives gone? Into hiding, apparently. Speak up and the howling mad new democrats will drive you into exile.

What party are you so enamored with over the last 20 years where when you sent political leaders to go to bat for you, fight for you and govern for you that has you in a place where you can say. I love that, I love that party?
Your thrilled that the party signed into law every item that Obama tossed in front of them, thats the party that you loved?
Truth be told we are now on the upswing. Many have lost sight of what real leaders can bring to the table when they actually do as they say and lead.
If you want the same old garbage that the media is about to unpack on you then I guess you can eat it up and call it a day but please. Don't for one second tell us that "The party is now dead".
The choices in front of you is stark regardless of what some CNN stooge is going to tell you. All you have to do is use common sense and logic and the party will steadily get back to more of what you really wanted from it compared to what you have now.

Crime is down but not by anything like what the numbers claim. Police departments have learned how to pencil-whip their stats.
It started in big metros like LAPD and NYPD. Now it's down to the level where little nowhere burgs are playing statistical and classification games with offense categories. Or just quietly omitting to take reports and write stuff up.
