Some 56% believe their children's lives will be worse off than their own, according to a January CNN poll. A Rasmussen poll released the following month found that 46% believe America's best days are behind it. Little more than a third believe better days lie ahead.

I empathize with this fear. The U.S. is already far down the path to becoming a less open and free society, and the current cultural and political atmosphere threatens to make the situation worse: Growing attacks on free speech and free association, hostile rhetoric toward immigrants, fear that global trade impoverishes rather than enriches, demands that innovators in cutting-edge industries first seek government permission.

Its also good for consumers, particularly the poorer ones that can't afford to pay the prices associated with domestic goods. And while you might argue that with trade restrictions wages will go up too, I observe that when wages go up the demand for whatever work they are doing falls.

The Koches have always wanted open borders.

As a famous economist once pointed out, you can have open borders or you can have a giant welfare state, but you can't have both. Not for long anyway.

The "free and open society" that fostered America's greatness was destroyed by the Dims' (with a lot of Republican assistance) creation of the giant welfare state.

We now have over 80 different welfare programs at the federal level, and we are spending hundreds of billions of dollars (that we don't have) every year on these programs. And millions of immigrants and illegal aliens are on multiple welfare rolls, with many more wanting to come and get "their share."

When the giant Ponzi scheme that is the federal government (and the Federal Reserve) finally crashes, maybe then we can talk about restoring America to what it once was. Or maybe not. More likely we'll just devolve into warring tribes, fighting over the scraps.

128 I listened to Trump's entire speech starting at 6:00 a.m. this morning It was long but it was good, but he made of a lot of promises. I hope he can keep some of them if elected. Donald needs to be tied to a teleprompter. He's less erratic and off the cuff that way. Still uses his hands-and particularly his right one-which has a life of its own-too much. But I do appreciate that what he said attempted to grind big chunks of salt into their wounds by way of the rigged super delegate system. It's not really fair to say he didn't value the base. He threw out a lot of red meat, and said things no other R would ever say. Overall, it left me feeling that the Left must be crapping in their britches today. And that's good. Donald is gonna Donald. But he was really good last night. I'm not ashamed to give him props for it.

Rush was talking about this yesterday and equating it to a time he was on the Phil Donahue show. He walked out onto the stage waving to the audience, and happened to have his arm outstretched. I: The whole thing was orchestrated to destroy not only Mr. Cruz personally, but the conservative movement within the party, which he is ostensibly the leader. Mr. Trump's entire campaign is now run by a full cadre of Establishment insiders, mostly made up of Dole allies, Paul Manafort being the most notable.

This whole episode was a set-up. The faux outrage by people in the media is revolting, and people who have fallen for it, sad to say, are being duped.

Not at all. If you look at politics as having two axes - the Left-Right on the X-Axis and the Authoritarian-Populist on the Y-Axis, both Trump and Sanders are populist (low on the Y-Axis) even though they are apart on the X-Axis.

J.J., there isn't much we can do about it at this point. Trump is the guy. Some things do alarm me about the guy, but everything alarms me about Hillary. As in 4-alarm fire. It does no good to rail on because for better or worse, it's either him or Hillary. What he said regarding trade, etc., was not the first time he's said it, but if there's a Venn diagram of commonality and it gets some dumb Bernie voters on the wagon, so be it. We know Trump isn't James Madison. And a lot of what he says makes me wince, but he also says a lot of damned good things. Sensible things that need to happen to help restore this very broken country. If elected, who knows if he can even accomplish it. But he's all we've got and I just have to hang my hat on that and give him a try to maybe do 1/3 of what he promises.

Yahoo's news page a day or two ago showed a picture of Donald and Melania standing next to each other next to a picture of Caitlin Jenner.

I didn't read anything - just logging out of email and that's what came on my screen - but the juxtaposition of these images pretty much summed up the two sides of out political and cultural divide.

One side saw Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun, contrasted with a courageous woman who fights ongoing prejudice in order to become who she really is.

The other side sees a happy, attractive, successful couple, contrasted with a freak that's spearheading a nationwide freak show that aims to turn the whole country into freaks.

I really hope the people in the political neutral zone saw those photos side by side.

Yeah, it was a little long.

But, it was obvious that he was trying to accomplish three things:

1) Before the speech, Trump said he was going to present his agenda in detail.

a) That makes it hard for Dims to Palinize him because what he said was very clear (and backed up by stats in several instances)

b) If he wins (and esp if he wins big) Trump can say people voted for my agenda to both parties, so get on board, as Reagan did.

2) With all the high energy, he was clearly going to use portions of this speech for campaign ads,

as befits a guy who likes to run things on a tight budget.

3) It was a unity speech. Not just for the party, but made a very clear appeal to Blacks via the lousy results and plantation control of the Democrats. It he gets 10% of the Black vote (I know, I know), Hillary!'s cooked.

All in all a solid B+...possibly edging into A territory if it accomplishes what he wanted it to do.

(This is a guy who thinks George W. Bush is a serious conservative.) He used 'dark' and 'disgusting' a few times. Honestly, you could hear the rabid-dog froth dripping from his lips. The hosts questioned his interpretation and he simply sounded nastier and repeated his slams. This was a phone interview. If he had been in the studio, I would have been calling for a tranquilizer dart gun in case he broke loose from his choke collar.

The man sounded seriously unhinged. I've heard his name but know nothing much about him. I don't know who he supported during the primaries but got the impression he would vote for Chairman Mao before Trump.

One of the good points he brought up repeatedly last night was that he is not a politician, he is not rigging the game for himself and protecting the obvious, destructive (for Americans) status quo in Washington, where politicians dance to the lobbyist and corporatist's tune. It is something that will resonate strongly with a lot of people who are not political animals. He warned of the onslaught against him from the MFM and all those politicians who don't want his presidency to threaten their game. Good tactic, imho.

Actually, conservatives have a few other concerns aside from Trumps economic policies which are bad enough. Some of the stuff he is saying about foreign policy is kinda nuts. 477 From what I saw the speeches last night were fine, generic. I was impressed that DT restrained his Clutch Cargo mouth so that his mannerisms weren't as distracting. I am going to be wildly optimistic that hope that he can get decent judges appointed because that is the biggest worry I have about this election. Never Hillary.

I don't think he'll peel away too many Sanders supporters, either. But I do appreciate that what he said attempted to grind big chunks of salt into their wounds by way of the rigged super delegate system. It's not really fair to say he didn't value the base. He threw out a lot of red meat, and said things no other R would ever say. Overall, it left me feeling that the Left must be crapping in their britches today. And that's good. Donald is gonna Donald. But he was really good last night. I'm not ashamed to give him props for it.
