Ace of Spades Pet Thread [Mis. Hum.]

zz pet cover irish setter.png

Welcome to the AoS Pet Thread, where hairballs and slobber are a way of life.

The anguished decision no pet parent ever wants to make. However, it must be done on occasion. An eloquent piece from Angry Staff Officer on the dreaded subject.

I am a selfish person; I had hoped he would die in his sleep while we were at work, or during the night. Instead, we had to make the decision of whether or not to put him down. It is rare that you have to make that kind of decision for something you love. And no matter how many times it happens, no matter how many times the vet tells you that it is for the best – that it will prevent suffering, that it is in fact the kind thing to do – it still tears away a piece of something inside you.

Regular Moron contributor Jim Sunk New Dawn, Galveston, TX is a cat guy. In his spare time he's built quite the elaborate bathroom system for his cats. Lord knows we hope he is around to explain all of this.

Meet The Pet Morons

Here are the cats that use that fancy kitty bathroom. Jim's cats Bonnie & Scamp.

zz texas jew remy.jpg

Say hello to Remy. Remy belongs to TexasJew. This dog was found wandering outside El Paso and only knew Spanish. Looks like a comfy dog now.

zz tina.jpg

Lurker Tina submitted this photo. Simon is on the left. Lilly is on the left. Simon is 8 months and Lilly is 1 year old. They look like mischief to me. Word on the street is that Shelties are cute.

zz julie.jpg

Julie would like to introduce Dexter to the horde. This cat has his "human parents" under his thumb, errrr I mean paw. Looks like a terrible life. Wonder where the umbrella drink is.

zz oreo.jpg

Last but not least is this cute guy Oreo. He's an Italian Greyhound. This little guy just turned 14. He looks good for hanging out. Thanks B1bbet for sharing.

Well, that wraps it up for another week. Thanks for stopping by and spending some time with us today. If you have a pet photo, story, tip or something related to pets please send it to us at petmorons at gee mail dot com.

6 Had to out one of my dogs down during Christmas. That sucked. 15 years old, blind, lost his sense of smell, balance, and appetite, mass growing in his abdomen. Everything crashing all at once in the space of a month. I wrestled with the idea of waiting till the new year, but he was just a lump waiting to die. I couldn't let him wait for me.

I'm sorry buddy!

8 My parents are out of town this weekend, so in about an hour or so I need to go check up on their kitties. While I am over there I'm going to take advantage of the basement and back yard to work on a couple projects that I don't have space for in my apartment.

9 Jim, that recessed kitty crapatorium is genius. And what lovely cats!

How can such gorgeous creatures excrete such toxic waste?

10 So last week, my 13 year old black lab got hit with severe bloat, couldn't walk or even stand, and touching him put him in awful pain. The vet said because of his age and the severity of the bloat he had a 20% chance of surviving the surgery and 50/50 to survive the week long recovery in ICU.

We made the awful decision to end his suffering, I've had him since he was a puppy. It still hurts.

So morons, I know you'll understand and hey, give your dogs/cats/whatever an extra pat for me today, OK?

11 Nice custom work, Jim! (I haven't forgotten about you)

I grew up with a sheltie, Laddie. (We weren't very creative kids)
He eventually had .ore prescriptions than Grandma, but we loved him. Went through a lot of Kraft Singles giving him his pills.

I mentioned earlier this week on an ONT that Tucker the Super minpin jumped up and snatched a grackle out of the air last weekend. Downright amazing to witness. I don't know who was more surprised - me or him.

14 Ok, that's a pretty elaborate kitty bathroom. I like that it's hidden discreetly. Too bad you can't do that with dogs.

15 Every so often I feel better then I run across a picture of him on my phone and it hurts again. So I get where Angry Staff Officer is coming from. My dog friend was already hobbling, a stroke survivor, hard of hearing...so we had a fair amount in common. And I hoped he would pass away on s own because I didn't want to be in the position of deciding whether to, let's be blunt, kill him. It sucks.

Posted by: VA GOP Sucks at July 23, 2016 02:56 PM (jcFhi)

16 Had a black lab I had to put down. He had a very aggressive cancer; his front right shoulder was literally falling apart.

When we came to see him after the lab results came in, he was still in pretty good spirits- up, around, and wagging his tail like crazy when we came in. That HURT.

The pain was still worth it, tho. Dogs are very special critters- and special gifts to us from God.

Word on the street is also that they are super-smart.

LOVE Jim's cat set-up. Almost makes me want to get another cat.

Our last one died 2 years ago. I still miss the goofball.
We're dog people, which I suppose is one reason why we haven't gotten another kitteh.
But there's something about a cat that actually makes you appreciate dogs (AND cats) more. The differences between the two are so lovably hilarious.

Tucker is the first dog I've had in 10 or 15 years - I'm going to be a friggin' mess if that day comes.
I'm hoping we go out together in a crazy blaze of glory one day in the distant future.

On a happier note, we were worried about my sister's little spaniel (of some sort). Had a tumor removed and a hysterectomy (?), and just finally came back from the vet yesterday with a clean bill of health.

39 We've gone through our share of pets. Five dogs, parakeets, even a male betta fish. They all lived to old age. Even the birds lived more than twice the usual span. But decisions had to be made for each one and that tears at you, no matter how necessary. Mrs. JTB put up a wall of photos we took of our pets over the years. Every time I walk by it, I smile at the lovely memories they evoke.

42 I am especially drawn to the expressions on some of those pet faces today. Around here, the three younger dogs have been a little hyper. The two older ones are showing their age.

Still miss Troy the Giant Dog. We had to make that decision not long ago. The speed with which he suddenly deteriorated made it easier.

43 So fahncy, Jim!! Actually that cabinet is a great idea. Has anyone using your guest bath ever been startled by a kitty?

Looks like you have a beautiful home.

I had to put down my 19-year-old kitty years ago... she was one of the prettiest cats I have ever seen (in person), a white and orange long-haired tortie, I think, with such a sweet face and the most amazing brandy-colored eyes...her kidneys had failed and she was dying in front of my eyes...I don't know if she was in pain or not by that time. It just seemed kinder to let her fall asleep. Our bassett died in her own bed (they never figured out what was wrong with her, probably cancer), but she hung in there until I left her for a few minutes to take out my contact lenses, and once she was alone she let go. Either way, wrenching.

45 We have lost 4 cats since we've been married. Two due to old age, two others who died young, one from Feline Leukemia, the other one they never figured out why. At the moment we have 3 cats and one dog, the oldest cat is almost 4 years, the dog is 2 and a half. I'm hoping it's a long time before we have to deal with those problems/decisions again.

46 (((HUGS))) VA and EC. I know that pain, both the sudden onset crisis and the ones that have crept up and deciding to pay the fare across that rainbow bridge before a beloved pet gets too miserable.

Had a couple horses over the decades die of strokes but that sudden loss aint easy either even with the blessing of not having to make the call.

Those are hilarious. I love the lab going down the water slide! Last year at the rodeo and county fair, they had a Splash Dogs contest where each dog gets a running start and leaps into a tank of water. The labs always could jump the farthest. That was so much fun to watch. I literally had to be dragged away to see the rodeo events. It was kind of a problem.

I've taken mine twice to lake and the stubborn doggie wouldn't budge or get in the water with me. I wish I could pick her up but she is too big now. Forcing her in the water seems mean to me.

64 And thanks everyone for the kind comments. Everything you see in those pictures was part of how I restored the house, after Hurricane Ike. Floors, trim, paint, tile....took me 18 months to do the whole house, but it's all to that standard.

Alas, I can't take all the credit for the colors involved, much of that praise goes to the lady of the house.

But I do pretty good in the design and layout work, and choosing most of the physical elements that go into the execution. Towel rack, curved shower rod, wainscoting, elevated tub feature, etc.

I'm especially fond of that 11"x14" tile inset into the tub surround tile, under the shower head. Beach scene with sandy cove, palm trees and surfboards stuck into the sand. That one took nearly an entire day of ultra-precision tile cutting and fitting to get centered exactly right into the white field tiles, with 8 inch "pencil" tile accents as a frame.

And no....due to the exterior latch on the cabinet door, the cats can't pop it open to startle a guest.

I can design and fit similar into just about any house, but it sometimes takes quite a bit of imagining to find just the right solution.

67 Haven't they done studies that conclusively show that people with pets, any type, live longer?
We have one dog, 4, and three leopard geckos, all around 1 year old. The dog should live to 13-15 and the leopard geckos can live 15-20 years. I'm starting to put feelers out about a second dog so that there's overlap. Sigh- sad to be so selfish about it.

This is a an issue. Older people 75 or above need to take this into consideration when they adopt an animal. They should make sure that there's a loving person that will take their pet if they become too infirm to care for the pet or the person suddenly assumes room temperature.

We talk about humans suffering losses, cats and dogs suffer the loss of their humans too.

I thought the critter was dead but he was just faking. I dragged both dogs out of the room and my husband donned his motorcycle leathers to chase it into the corner. The creature bit him but the leather saved an er trip. He grabbed him and put him outside in the front yard. Smokey sat in the window watching him until he left the yard. We were lucky Smokey didn't get bitten, just a scratch on his cheek. He thinks he's a big game hunter now. This is the second possum he's gotten.

73 I've had Alaskan Malamutes the past few years. When Nikki went blind she used to break into the fridge. I'd come home and find food containers and try to remember if I left them out. When I bought a new house, she could get within a foot of the new steps and would actually work handle to let herself in. Lobo learns new commands fast fast and is 150 pounds of puppy. He'd break through the door before looking at the handle though.

75 Thank you, Miss L'Elle! Yes'm.... every molecule of what you see in those pics is my handiwork.

With one exception. Contractor friend of mine did the laminated wood for the tub-step. It's three 2"x18" pressure treated planks, with an additional 1"x12" plank to get the desired 7 inch height. Then cut to shape on a very large industrial bandsaw.

Fully glued and screwed together, that step will never rot, sag or fail. It's 100% solid, laminated pressure treated wood, not a framed-out, hollow step.

Otherwise? Not a big house, only 1,400 sq. ft. But, that's a lot of 3 in. wide hardwood to glue down one strip at a time, along with tile kitchen, baths and laundry. And trim carpentry, baseboards, shoe moldings, crown molding, paint and other finish work.

Did the Master Bath from scratch, too. But there's no cat bathroom in that one, so no pics here of it. *grin*

They turn from bright red to black and then remain as a large stain on her skin. We've brought her to the vet a couple times and they've asked if we want to do a biopsy. My wife and I have been torn - if it's skin cancer there's little to nothing we can do as we don't have the finances to put her thru eradication processes, and another part of us doesn't want to subject ourselves to the pain and worry of knowing her time may be limited. She says that when she got each she made a number amount of what she would be willing to spend to save them if they ever got seriously sick. Smitty, sorry to hear about the pup's skin. One of the two cats in the photos above, Scamp (not the black one), suffered a near-terminal skin infection when he was not quite a year old.

He quite literally, lost 1/4 to 1/3 of the skin on his body. Think of it as 3rd degree burns, to get an idea of the severity.

One of the vets wanted to put him down as a lost cause, but a more stalwart lass at the clinic took over, dug deep into the books, and was able to identify, with certainty, the particular microbe behind the mess, and prescribe the effective antibiotic.

So, he got oral medicine twice a day for nearly eight months.

The other thing that was highly effective? Salt water baths, twice a day. Also, for eight months.

But, the effect on the goopy, pussy, runny skin was nearly immediate, and staying with the program worked as a "drawing" agent, curing and drying any necrotic tissue, while also promoting the healthy regeneration of new skin and fur.

And as you can see in the pic. He. Has. No. SHORTAGE of fur!

The third element, I didn't try, but know people who have, with very positive results. That supplement they advertise on all the talk radio programs. Dino Vite. Give it a try, it seems to do wonders for skin problems.

Finally, a point of amusement. You know the "cone of shame" to keep a pet from licking a wound? Scamp has so much fur, he'd "throw" a cone, and none were big enough to stop him from reaching affected areas.

So, one pizza box lid later, I cut and fitted a 13" diameter flat disk, with the head hole cut in a starburst pattern in the cardboard, that would fit over the head, but snugly onto the neck.

And he wore that for the next eight months, too.

The things we do for the pets. But, they're worth it, absolutely.

99 Smitty I've seen that kind of thing with allergies. It's usually seasonal though. Do you put anything directly on it? I have used spray on hydrocortisone which seems to help. On occasion have had to use a cone of shame to keep them from licking the sores. Also keep them clean and dry and try to keep them out of the heat and bugs of summer.

It usually takes a while to clear up and at times can look pretty bad. I've learned to recognize it early though and keep it from spreading. Hopefully that's all it is.

Dog loves son and misses him, so it was good for the dog (although he would only eat treats rather than his own food). Cat mewed the whole way there and would not come out of safe spaces -- went behind the washer and dryer causing much sweating and swearing. So he finally just stayed in the guest room by himself. I'm a dog person and ignore cats, so to be contrary they hang around me and the two WI cats were obnoxious with rubbing on everything of mine.

We stopped on the way, had a couple of bacon-egg-cheese biscuits, and split a pint of chocolate milk. L, Elle - I agree.

Having said that, where is the line for that magic amount? I don't know...I mean, I have an amount in mind, but even here at the keyboard, under no pressure whatsoever, I would be hard pressed to tell you what it is.
It certainly isn't $261 and some change, which is what I dropped earlier this morning to have Blood work (a food panel and regional allergies panel) run on my Blue tick Coonhound. We just can't shake an ear infection in one ear. The anti-biotics kill it, but 3 days after the pills run out, it's back. So we're exploring food allergies now.
Went through something similar with my Great Dane last year. Poor baby is allergic to just about everything under the sun...except beef. So we buy 'half a beef' locally and stock up the freezer! But it worked. I hope for similar results for Dixie Belle (blue tick).
I know those don't qualify as 'serious expenses' but they add up quickly.
As always, thanks for the nice thread!!!

126 I've had to make that terrible decision 3 times with my kitties. The first was 18 years old and had cancer in her jaw. She was dropping weight fast and couldn't eat, she was in constant pain. The other 2 were sister cats who got cancer and had to be put to sleep within 3 weeks of each other.

It's very hard and you wonder if the decision was made too soon, but if they're losing weight fast and are in distress, there's nothing other than pain killers and you're only giving them a few more days or a week.

I was with each one when they were put away, I didn't want their last memory to be frightened in the hands of strangers and not knowing where I was.

The euthanasia now is very quick, the last two went in less than 30 seconds.

127 To VA GOP, EC, and Cooldawg, I am sorry for your loss and I know your pain. As mentioned here in the inaugural pet thread, I lost Duke, my 5 y/o 90# black Lab, last summer to a car due to a moment's inattention on my part and Duke's natural curiosity. Not a day goes by that I don't miss him.

Duke's smiling face graces the logo in the "#BLACKLABSMATTER" ballcaps I now have for sale (with a discount and free shipping to Morons); send me an email at blacklabsmatterstore@gmail.com and I'll fix you up.

Soona, I had a great boy cat, a tabby that showed up as a weeny kitten at my door with gravel rash on his paws and grew to be a little tiger (he'd try to take down my Lab by leaping on his back and biting his spine, to no effect). One day I let him out when I left for work, and never saw him again. I walked the road and ditches, and have kept an eye out for his carcass for three years, and he vanished without a trace. We do have great horned owls and coyotes, and given that he vanished in the daytime, I'll bet the coyotes got him, but I'm sure he didn't go without a hell of a fight.

Smitty27, I'd lean toward allergies or diet issues, and second the recommendation that you try DinoVite. Can't hurt, might help, as my old bud Scruffy says.

The vet had another Newf in a couple of days before, who had busted his ACL and had surgery, then broke the repaired knee. She doesn't want to send ours for surgery because of that, but it means we have to keep him confined to one level of our four level house. Which means someone has to be with him almost all of the time. And yes, he is milking this for everything he's got. Talk about sly.

He's just trying to taper off the 'nip. Let him vape.

It may depend on the breed, but I've had cats who played fetch, loved getting in the water, and were very affectionate. They refused to play into the socially imposed stereotype of the indifferent feline.

132 Also, Quantum, my super-affectionate beastie could be placated by spending about five minutes of quality affection time with eye contact and ear scritches. If I didn't acknowledge his presence with sufficient alacrity he could pester me for hours. Just give in and focus on the kitty.

133 My condolences to all who have lost or are ;losing a beloved pet. I'm in the same boat. I lost Miss Sofie Dog in May and in June Mr Toby Dog was diagnosed with cancer. He responded so badly to the standard chemo, that I took him off all meds and am now trying to spoil him as rotten as I can, while I can.

FWIW, I wish I had found this book earlier,

The Dog Cancer Survival Guide: Full Spectrum Treatments to Optimize Your Dog's Life Quality and Longevity
http://astore.amazon.com/aoshq-20/detail/0975263153

but I had no idea he had a heart tumor and I think I will be facing the euthanasia question in the near future.

So to echo a request above, give all your pets an extra hug, love, snuggle, or playtime in memory of all the pets that have passed through our lives and left us all far too early.

136 I'm crazy about the kitty potty, Jim. Nice house too.

As I've mentioned, I'm considering buying a house with a doggie bathroom. Still haven't decided, but we went back and looked again. The little bathroom seems to also have food storage and I think that's where the dogs are fed too. I still couldn't go in it because the dogs were in there.

I wish homes were built with "facilities" like what Jim built, or this dog bathroom, as well as larger utility rooms in general.

137 Our dog Wink, a miniature dachsund was my baby. I woke up for school one morning, having had no awareness of how old he was, opened the garage to let him into the house (my mother insisted he spend the night in the garage) and found him laying dead on the floor. I just shut down. I got my cereal and ate my breakfast. My mom got up and opened the door to the garage since Wink wasn't bouncing around in the house, closed the door again and told me not to go out there, that Wink was dead. I probably just nodded. I went to school and spent the whole day refusing to cry. When I got home, I lay down on my bed and fell apart. I loved that dog so much even though he bit me twice. I have no idea how I got through that day.

And it's never gotten any easier, no matter how many pets I have had.

I had never been around that breed until a few weeks ago, we were on vacation and strolling around window shopping. Doors were open because the weather was nice. Out of this one boutique shot a brown Frenchy who landed on my son's leg and then rolled over on my feet for some tummy scratchins. Of course we had to go inside, where there were two more of them, one wearing the Cone of Shame. They were all sweet, but that first one was such a lovey boy.

139 This week's Pet Thread has motivated me to give the pup a spa night.
Bath, pawdicure, a bite or two of smoked salmon when it's done, and maybe even ice cream.

140 She was found in a bar ditch, 5 weeks old, with a ruptured diaphragm. One of my dear customers was the head of the Humane Society and just knew we needed this puppy. She came in and went right over and tackled my slipper, even though it was as big as she was. She had to go back to the vet clinic for the surgery and it was a wait and see deal. When Murphy came home she instantly became queen of her domain. I train for a living, but G-d help me I could not deny this dog anything. At the time I was working 20 hours a day and she was with me every step. Every other dog that came after her knew she was the boss. Murphy was never a needy type, she just had a command. 17 years later she left me. No condolences because she would hate it and I always knew I had a rare gift.

141 Hi Ben!

Sounds like Murphy was one-in-a-million!

You both were blessed to have each other.

144 >>>>> Having said that, where is the line for that magic amount? I don't know...I mean, I have an amount in mind, but even here at the keyboard, under no pressure whatsoever, I would be hard pressed to tell you what it is.

Sixkiller, totally with you on that thought. When my vet gave me that advice, I left her office pensive and trying to come up with a number. Halfway on my drive back home I was about to turn around and go back to the clinic and ask "What the hell is the right number???!!!??"

I think the correct answer for me is whatever I have in my bank accounts when the time comes minus whatever I need to live on.
