Alcohol Is Your Friend...In More Ways than One. [CBD]

Cell phone water.jpg

A few months ago I was in need of the model number of a toilet. Of course the number was printed inside the tank -- how convenient! -- but they had put it behind the valve assembly, where no human could read it. So I took out my trusty cell phone, not realizing that for whatever reason, unknown to sentient humans, the plumber who had installed the toilet had adjusted the water level to within 1/2 inch of the top. I took a quick photo of the number as I realized that I had just plunged my phone a few inches deep into a tank of water.

I shook the excess water out, warmed it in front of a blow dryer (yeah, they say not to. Why?). And low and behold all of the buttons, except one, worked, and the screen wasn't cloudy.

But the lone holdout was the back button, and my phone is crap without it. So when I got home later that night I checked replacement cost, threw up a little, and then started thinking.

Water and alcohol are fast friends. In fact, alcohol would rather be around water molecules than other alcohol molecules (If Jay Guevara is reading this, please to check my work). So I pulled out my trusty bottle of 91% propyl alcohol, poured a few inches into a glass, and immersed my phone. After about 10 minutes I pulled it out, let it dry overnight, and presto! The back button worked perfectly.

I think a few things were going on. First, there was residual water in the phone that was shorting one button, and the alcohol slurped that up. Second, I got to it quickly and displaced the water, so little or no corrosion took place. Third, The water only rose a few inches into the phone, and I kept it upright, so it didn't flood the entire thing.

I was lucky, but if this were to happen again I would certainly try 91% alcohol over rice or some other desiccant.

5 I dropped mine in a snowdrift once and it stayed there for 12 hours buried in a snowdrift in freezing weather until I found it.

I brought it inside, gave it time to return to room temp and buried it in a bowl of rice like they say. Left it in there about 24 hours. Took a while for a few of the buttons to "come back" but within 3 weeks it worked like new again.

Hmmmmm. I wouldn't be surprised if the inner ear is prone to rapid alcohol absorption, sort of like the lower intestine / bowel. There was a bit of a scandal a few years back about college kids doing vodka enemas to get drunk more quickly. Does your friend look forward to swimming?

79 Hygrometers (humidity gauges) are notoriously inaccurate. They show changes, but you can't count on the R.H. percentage they indicate. Own more than one? Line them up together and prove a point. I bought a somewhat better one--once--and found it was only the housing that was upgraded. Still a strand of hair inside.

Recently had occasion to replace an outdoor thermometer, a big showy round one. Found out they're just as bad -- all the ones with a li'l springy thing on the back. Some have a dial to fine-tune, so if you can find a good one, you can at least set it right once -- although, reading reviews, "leverage" is involved and most are accurate to within 2F only in the 60-80 range. They're cute though.

I have a real thermometer (surprising how rare those are); Dad used it when gauging tanks at the refinery. It's pretty substantial, but, straight mercury tube, you can't read it from across the lawn whilst "drying the old cell phone" on the patio. Best excuse for pouring another phone-dryer is to note the temp.

Digital readouts are like the Gell-Mann effect: you assume it's accurate, after all it looks like a computer! But generally, they're pretty shitty too. OK as entertainment and decoration, but I wouldn't use it to, say, cook nitroglycerine.

84 Ethyl alcohol's love of water is actually one of the reasons its kind of a pain to use as fuel: Until recently, most of the fuel system components in a car were made of mild steel and regular rubber. Alcohol's chemical properties means the rubber components get chewed up early in their service life and its hygroscopic (water attracting) properties means the mild steel components get rusted out. Modern cars have stainless fuel lines and different rubber seals that are more resistant to ethanol. Methanol (which, if you really wanted to get the US off of gasoline, would be more practical economically than ethanol: You can make it from coal) is even worse: It is even more hygroscopic and is even (very slightly) acidic. Using it would require a more substantial redesign of automotive fuel systems and distribution systems.

So she's OK with her son being sodomized and probably gang raped, dragged through the streets and then murdered due to the actions of Hillary and O? It offends HER when his name is mentioned by Trump?

Wow. What a piece of work. Just like those German women who have been raped by Muslims and won't report it, since their rapists might have to face consequences.

BTW... if I were Trump, I'd just call him "the ambassador who was murdered in Bengazi under Hillary's watch." Or something like that.

I used to work in the two way radio business, and back when pagers were a thing for very important people, pagers getting dropped into the toilet were a big thing. (It was never stated how the pager was extracted from the toilet.)

The first step in repair of said pager was to take it into the bathroom, and wash it; taking it apart, and washing it with soap and water in the sink.

I never liked working on pagers.

93 Leaked emails show that the DNC planned RNC convention (Trump) protests:
---
Were there any? It seems like they failed spectacularly (aside from the beautiful incident of the guy trying to burn the flag setting himself on fire).

If this is open, I've had an idea bumping around my head the last couple of days I wanted to float, and maybe it's nuts but it's (hopefully) a slow news day (ie, no Westerner's been slaughtered by mohammadans yet).

Ted Cruz's non-endorsement Wednesday night made him a hero to the neverTrump crowd, and was at least appreciated by folks who felt he got a raw deal in the primary (Trump's free media for example). And it was not well received by folks who are pro-Trump and those who simply acknowledge the outcome of the primary and want fire focused on the witch from here on out. To the point where many consider it career ending.

Now I would have been happy with either of them so maybe that's messing with me. But I can't shake the theory that flowed through the entire primary that the two were in cahoots behind the scenes. So Cruz gave Trump mostly fair warning about the contents of the speech, and then the crowd reacted the way it did, allegedly with prompting on Manafort's part (I note that's an allegation, I haven't seen an admission to that anywhere). And the result is that the GOP apparatus has now been united against the neverTrump crowd in a way they were not prior to the speech.

So my question is, if Cruz is the statesman his supporters believe, is it possible this whole thing was kabucki to make a final end of the neverTrump wing of the party? Did Cruz fall on his sword because, like Trump or not, this is the only way left to keep Hillary out of the White House?

Or does everyone figure 'no one acts that well'?

114 Warning! Science ahead!

Water has a huge surface tension. This means if it is trapped between two surfaces close together, like, oh, the key and the contact pad of your aqueous-curious electronic device, it sticks like peanut butter and won't come out where it can do the right thing and evaporate.

Alcohol prevents the surface tension thing. The water-alcohol mix can then escape all the little cracks and things and go do something fun, allowing the device to once again function as designed.

132 I have long been fascinated by supercritical CO2. It is CO2 that has been compressed to a liquid state, and as such has no surface tension. It gets into every little crack, cranny, and most volatile oils are extracted by it.

I am not sure it would work for drying out electronics since it also permeates and "carbonates" resins and plastics - in essence gives the materials the bends when it decompresses, making them swell.
This would probably affect fit and function.

Jackal, our old Iron Pig midget has a flathead V8 set up for alcohol. The Strombergs would regularly be covered in ice, even with the block red hot.
I read a couple of years ago that there was only one vehicle on the market that could make proper use of alcohol fuel, one model BMW with a variable rate supercharger that sensed the "octane" so-to-speak of the input fuel. A blower is the only way to get to a compression ratio needed to really use alcohol and still have an engine that can start and idle. Any other use is just burning up good hooch.

Result: pain and other symptoms 10X worse. Life ruined. Can't work. Can't play. Used up our life savings. Had to sell home.

Right now the dewpoint in OKC is 70 degrees. It's miserable outside as far as humidity is concerned.

Oh, and the relative humidity is reading 49%.

So rely on the dewpoint.

Posted by: Soona at July 24, 2016 12:52 PM (Fmupd)

Keep in mind that RH varies with temp. As temperature goes up the RH reading will go down even though the actual moisture content of the air does not change. RH is a measure of the amount of moisture content compared to the saturation level. That is the relative part. Most weather services prefer dew point not because it is more accurate, but because it is more meaningful as far as "comfort" goes.

Interesting, but I think unlikely. Before Cruz arrived, Ryan and the GOPe has already locked down the conservatives like Mike Lee who wanted a roll call, as the rules allowed. Even before the convention GOPe was making sure there would be no conservative rebellion.

Then the morning after the convention, Trump went right back to spouting his insane conspiracy theories about Cruz's dad.

GOPe, Trump etc want the business-as-usual ethanol fraud to continue.

Maybe we should come up with a new type of crime, similar to a "hate crime" that can be applied in addition to the actual crime: sharia crime.

If it had happened in Syria, his neighbors probably would have joined in the fun. Considered just another day in the 'hood.

Syrians are Shiites, and Shiites *do* have a tradition of running around cutting their heads with knives as an expression of grief for their favored successor, Ali. So yes, that's correct.

Given these daily attacks, Germany should issue an ultimatum to all Muslims to GTFO or else they will start carpet bombing the no-go zones.

I calibrated in the Winter when the RH was pretty low. It reads right along with the local airports readings until it gets above 80%. That appears to be the upper limit of the detector.

Yes, it would have been nice if they had provided a calibration curve with it, but you can't expect a lot for $40.

"A nice young couple" I know got married in W. Colo, then came to Ahia for one of several receptions. And the smallbore Nationals started the next day (Not At Camp Perry Any More). The entire smallbore precision "community" goaded that groom to take her to Nationals for her honeymoon. And she said, sure why not.

That right there got her introduced most favorably to all the officials present for the matches, because, like, poster girl right? And new hubby qualified for the Roberts Team -- so for the second-half of her honeymoon she gets an expenses-paid trip to England next year. She won the honeymoon lottery, you might say.

305 One of the things alcohol does is reduce the surface tension of the water so it drains better. A great swimmer's ear prevention an ENT told me about is 50% vinegar and 50% medical grade alcohol (~90%). Put it in a dropper and add a small amount to each ear after swimming. The alcohol kills bacteria and helps the water drain out of the ear. The vinegar helps keep a healthy pH balance.

Works great!

309 The reason the alcohol worked is because it forms an azeotrope with with water, so when it evaporates, it brings water along for the ride.

This is why you can never distill ethanol to 200 proof.

316 Wikipedia notes that isopropyl alcohol forms an azeotrope at 91% by volume, and a boiling point of just under 177°F. As long as you use a lot more alcohol than water, you won't take the concentration much below that, and the fact that the alcohol evaporates at a lower temperature means it will dry faster.

The ethanol azeotrope boils at 172° at 95% alcohol. The difference of less than 5° probably isn't enough to matter.

It also helps that the ambient vapor pressure of both kinds of alcohol will be essentially zero, so the alcohol will vaporize without interference and carry the water with it.

Posted by: Karl Lembke at July 24, 2016 06:14 PM (oOUYm)

319 Rice is a myth. Do not do it.

You did the best possible thing by soaking it in alcohol ASAP, 91% and up.

What happens when the electronics get wet is corrosion. It's on a level where you'd need a microscope to see it.

Putting it in rice, your phone s-l-o-w-l-y dries out, (the rice does next to nothing -- it's not touching the internal components) and as it does so, the corrosion continues. Putting it in alcohol will temporarily arrest the corrosive process. Doing it quickly and then letting it dry out means that probably only a small amount of corrosion set in.

There is no magic bullet. If electronics get water-logged, the only way to clean off that microscopic corrosion is with sonic devices that ain't cheap.
