Bottom line is he signed a pledge to supprt the nominee.

Trump gave him a pretty plumb speaking spot

And his little stunt took all of the attention off of the main speaker of the evening, Mike Pence, and made Cruz the story everyone is talking about.

Let's see.

Have someone smear your wife and personally attack her.
Accuse your father of being the guy on the Grassy Knoll.
Impugn your character, on an hourly basis.
Mock your deeply held religious convictions.

And do all this without having the guts to have an honest, substantive critique on the issues. And at the very end, not have the decency to apologize - not even have the horse sense to even FAKE an apology.

And you're disappointed that Cruz didn't apologize?

Like I said, we have a low-life vulgarian who is our nominee, now surrounded by ex-Ford and Dole operatives and working closely with Rancid Pubis and McConnell.

.The man broke his sworn pledge, you can't trust a single thing he says or does after that. He wasn't forced to sign it, he could have kept going in the Primary without signing it, but he did sign it and in the end he broke his word. Once a man does that it is all over for him.

He is a coward. If he really felt this strongly about not supporting Trump he should have said that from the very beginning but he didn't.

Personnally, I love a good speech. If you have ever been to a political convention, even a mock one put on by university, the floor demonstrations are great.

You get out in the aisle, march around with the other demonstrators, wave your sign or flag, jump around, yell and scream at people. You get the ol enthusiaism going. You get pumped up, you get everyone else pumped up. Great fun!

Then you go into the delegate meetings where you harrange and harrass your opponents, brow beat your political enemies, and make deals. It's America!

"Look at her posture. She is balanced, powerful, upright and well grounded with both feet firmly planted on the earth. Look at the line made from the crown of her head to the heels of her feet. She is only protected by the force of her own personal power.

By contrast, the officers have the transitory, temporary, protection of their equipment that will be removed at the end of their shift. They are rocked back on their heels, knocked off balance, and appear about to fall over backward, just from the power of her.

This is a legendary picture. It will be in history and art books from this time."

146 Ugh.

I'm still so disappointed in Cruz.

He sidelined himself last last night. We needed him to be an effective Senator over the next 4-8 yrs and hopefully, President in the next cycle or two.

But, nope.

He took himself completely out of the game. I'll be surprised if he wins his next Senatorial election...the Bushes have one of their clan in place and will have the money and support in Texas to run a very effective campaign.

Everyone understands why Ted did what he did but it was a stupid way to do it. And he's supposed to be the "smart guy".

He could have simply said at the end of his near great speech about freedom and the Constitution-

"...and we all know that Hillary is there waiting in the wings to take our freedoms away and burn the Constitution to ashes.

So, when we have the chance to move the cause of freedom and Constitutionality forward even one inch,

we have to take it. We have to vote for the person who will give us that inch and move forward toward freedom.

And, in this election that man is Donald J Trump."

BOOM! Done.

Not a full-throated support. But, a speech that gives everyone what they wanted, including Cruz, and provides Cruz with a platform and effective role going forward. And more important, keeps him from being sidelined as an ego-driven, sour grapes loser.

I guess it's the wasted potential that bothers me so much.

As anyone who's seen a bright kid get involved with the wrong group of friends, and lost his way with drugs or whatever can tell you,

your "friends" aren't always your friends.

His advisers and speechwriters are lousy if they didn't tell him this was the wrong way to go.

And bitter a-holes like Mark Levin, who I used to admire, I'm sure, stoked Cruz' ego and anger instead of being good friends who let him see the whole picture and helped him move ahead.

So, instead, we're stuck with the spectacle of Newt wiping Cruz' butt for him on national TV-

because Newt is a true friend, both to Ted and the freedom, and saw the damage Cruz had done to himself and the cause of defeating Hillary.

Can nobody on our side play this game?

I know TLR.

But, I had to get this off my chest.

155 48 Have someone smear your wife and personally attack her.

Accuse your father of being the guy on the Grassy Knoll.

Impugn your character, on an hourly basis.

Mock your deeply held religious convictions.

And do all this without having the guts to have an honest,
substantive critique on the issues. And at the very end, not have the
decency to apologize - not even have the horse sense to even FAKE an
apology.

And you're disappointed that Cruz didn't apologize?

Posted by: J. J.

Exactamundo. Look, I *wish* that Ted could have found a way to implicitly support Trump more strongly; he did take clear shots at TFG/The Shrill One. Explicitly was clearly out of the question :

March 30 2016 -- "No, I don't anymore," Trump said, when asked by CNN's Anderson Cooper if he continued "to pledge to support whoever the Republican nominee is?"

Earlier, Cruz had told Cooper when asked the same question: "I'm not in the habit of supporting someone who attacks my wife and my family ..."

So, looking down the road a few years, Cruz will be able to claim that honor was at stake; not to the loyalty pledge, but to his family.

And that in good conscience, beyond the pale, etc. and so forth.

173 I'm late to the party commenting on this, but as a 100% Cruz supporter from the get-go, I was really disappointed last night. Disappointed that he just couldn't go that extra inch and say we have a choice between Trump and the most corrupt person ever nominated to a political party. We have Trump, like it or lump it. The alternative is too horrible to contemplate. It really is time to tighten it up and be in this together or lose America. And two choices is really all we have to decide between. I appreciate Newt trying to smooth it over when he came out next, but I was not impressed with Cruz's non-supportive support. And I can't believe I just said that.

Great last night were:
The black minister (Scott?) with the red shirt...awesome.
Laura Ingraham...en total fuego.
Eric Trump...another well-spoken Trump kid.
Newt...nobody can articulate better than him.
Pence...I was not expecting much, but he far surpassed my expectations.

2 To see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary.

3 Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee.

4 Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name.

5 My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips:

6 When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches.

7 Because thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice.

8 My soul followeth hard after thee: thy right hand upholdeth me.

9 But those that seek my soul, to destroy it, shall go into the lower parts of the earth.

10 They shall fall by the sword: they shall be a portion for foxes.

11 But the king shall rejoice in G-d; every one that sweareth by him shall glory: but the mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped.

That means there are only 6 States where your vote really counts.

This had nothing to do with what Trump may have done in the past during the primary.

Trump is the Nominee, the convention is to nominate, gather support and unify behind the nominee.

Cruz signed a pledge to support the nominee.

Trump gave Cruz a prime speaking spot.

Cruz made himself the story with his little stunt and distracted tremendously from the evenings featured speaker, Mike Pence, and sowed disunity in the party and gave the FAB ammunition for the general.

Completely uneccessary, if Cruz was still angry he could have done what many others who do not support Trump have done and not shown up.

Very bad move on Cruz's part.

He congratulated Trump right at the beginning, No where in the
speech does he even remotely suggest not to vote for Trump. The media is
whipping this up, don't buy into it. if everyone would have just
listened to the speech and clapped after there would be none of this.
But Trumps people wanted him to say the actual words " I endorse Trump"
they didn't even seem to care about anything else he was saying, so they
turned it into a circus per usual.

Bottom line is he signed a pledge to supprt the nominee.

Trump gave him a pretty plumb speaking spot

And his little stunt took all of the attention off of the main

Pretty dissapointed in Cruz.

And it was so uneccesary.

Posted by: Kreplach at July 21, 2016 07:53 AM (e7A1N)

Bottom line, Cruz did not promise an endorsement, Trump disavowed any pledge before any other candidate and Cruz said nothing negative about Trump.

Also, Trump did not have the power to stop Cruz from speaking.

So once again, Trump supporters are misrepresenting the facts.

what I said last night and today acknowledges 100% that what Cruz said essentially endorse Trump's Polices. I have never denied that and I shouted that from the roof last night. But as I also said NOBODY will remember that because of his immature and out of place non-endorsement of Trump. The ONLY headline in the morning papers is that he refused to endorse Trump. Ya know most people have lives, unlike me, and did not watch last night...all they see are the headlines in the papers. 5 or 6 words by Cruz last night and he would have been a hero. That means there are only 6 States where your vote really counts.

277 So from what I can see Trump read the Cruz speech then loaded the stage area with people ready to boo at the end of the speech... he then hits with a tweet. All orchestrated. What in the sam hell is the point of it? He's got the nomination, Cruz is a nothingburger at this point, let him say his speech and walk off, be done with it.

Unless Trump's goal is to lose the election and have a scapegoat that just so happens to be the one guy that's been fighting the democrats and establishment republicans the whole time. That young and bright bench that republicans had before going into this election? Every one of them has been attacked either fairly or unfairly by Trump and subsequently his supporters. They hurl "Reagan's 10th commandment" all over the place but they are just as bad if not worse. I get politics aint beanbag.. but that part is over - let it go, at the very least you need a strong Ted Cruz in the senate, unless of course that's not your plan at all.

What's worse is you have people patting themselves on the back for the job Trump did in "providing Ted the rope" to hang himself... it was a con job, they knew the speech, and they manufactured the reaction to blow it up. If you ask me - Trump is trying to destroy and fracture the republican party as much as possible, just as I"m coming around to vote for him - he pulls this crap and pushes me back to leaning toward him being a plant by Hillary.

Exactly!

If you apply Western standards and values to them, then a majority of them could be considered insane. They don't value life, Their status is based on honor, not shame, which leads to all sorts of awful things like throwing acid in girls' faces, murdering family members who have shamed the family, and gang-raping the sister of the guy who ran off with your sister. And then there's ISIS, who regularly performs the most beastly, horrifically violent acts on people - even their own - with glee and pride.

315 As always, the media has focused on tiny things that don't matter, while totally ignoring the huge news that is world changing.

In Donald Trump Jr.'s speech, he opened the door to win a minimum of 30% of the black vote and probably 70% by election day.

Finally, a republican has figured out that if you attack the democrats on their Faustian bargain with the teacher's union, you can change the voting patterns of the country. Trump Jr. talked about how schools are designed to provide employment to the union, but don't educate the kids.

If the campaign focuses on this and starts tossing out the numbers - that the big cities spend $25K to $30K per year per kid and only one in five learn to read or write - the country will take notice.

Once inner city blacks understand that Trump wants to give them a choice and finally teach their kids to read and make change for a dollar, the wave of change will happen.

Only Trump can make the case that for all these years the democrats have been "playing" the black population to get votes while paying off the teacher's union.

Make it a conspiracy. That is what people understand.

You know this how?

What actually happened was that speakers at the convention were generally required to endorse in exchange for the speaking slot. But Trump, in what I think was an olive branch, neither vetted nor insisted that Cruz follow the same requirements as other speakers. Trump's team didn't see the speech until a couple of hours before Cruz was scheduled to speak, and by then it was too late...he couldn't revoke the spot because the story would be all about thin skinned Trump.

last 3 minutes of it. He begged people to vote up and down ballot this
November and to vote their conscience. Isn't that what people do when
they both most of the time? Vote their conscience?

From what I've listened to so far, it was a good speech. I don't know why anyone would expect an outright endorsement.

Didn't Trump vet the speech beforehand.

The problem is that Trump supporters either 1) wanted Cruz to be forced to tongue bath Trump or 2) don't believe that Trump was included in the rights supporting, constitution defending group that Cruz asked people to support.

I will leave it to you to suss out which Trump supporters fall under 1) and which fall under 2).

J.J. you know I think you're a mensch. But if Cruz harbored a grudge against Donald for attacks that - let's be honest - were penny-ante compared to what the Dems would have unloaded on him, how would he have fared as the nominee?

Cruz could have simply pulled a !Jeb and stayed home. But he decided to stick one last finger in Trump's eye and step on Pence's night with his "vote your conscience" line. If that line isn't a shot of adrenaline to the NeverTrumpers, I'll eat my hat. And the Dems are already using Ted's speech to hammer Trump.

It was a petulant error he could have avoided. I wish he had. We have enough problems with Trump as the nominee to begin with.

It was a great speech though from Reagan, and it began with effusive thanks to Ford and made reference to Ford and the heavily Reagan- influenced GOP platform interchangeably throughout the short text. Closing at the end with his famous "there is no substitute for victory!" line, I doubt there was a Ford or Reagan delegate there who thought anything other than "we are going to war against the Democrats together!".

Ted achieved nothing like that last night-- he misread the crowd, he left a clear demarcation between the two candidates and he seemed enough tone-deaf that I honestly think even his most partisan supporters are looking at him a little sideways today.

Having said that, I fully agree with Chique and think Trump is basically at fault for not making peace successfully. And apologizing for calling Heidi crazy and Rafael part of the Kennedy assassination crew. The "Lying Ted" stuff was juvenile enough to forgive, but wife and father....

This is one of Trumps major challenges in bringing the party together for this election: like Obama, he wants "I won" to be the unifying force, when instead it is necessary to go and apologize. It was so personal an attack, and so mean and non-political, that the apology has to be equal to the insult. Since Trump is a Democrat, basically, and kind of a neophyte, he needs to cultivate some goodwill with his own side. He can still do it, but time is sliding by.

405 Again - Trump for whatever reason is looking backwards instead of forwards. He's got the nomination - why at this point pick a fight with people you need to vote for you? For all the "Trump is so clever and smart" - that may be true but it depends on what his goal is. If winning a presidential election is his goal, then he's doing it wrong. However, if it's losing with an excuse and people to blame - well then he found his target in Ted Cruz and his supporters.

It's a two for win for Hillary and the democrats - they get the WH and they get a conservative scalp. Trump's silly tweets about "Crooked Hillary" have been nice, but if he fails to hit her hard during the debates - and then loses and blames the NeverTrump nonsense that he and his supporters continue to antagonize, he'll be exactly what was said about him early - a plant.

407 This is all genius Kabuki theater. Trump knew of this speech ahead of time and was fine with it. He knew that it would position him as the benevolent uniter...."Look, I invited this man to my convention and still he spit on me. They are all against me but I will do what I must to bring us together in spite of their misguided ire!"...
And he still gets to take the spotlight back when he walks into the auditorium while Ted is speaking. Genius.
As for Ted? This was his best play...and possibly the best play for the party. If he just came out and gave a full throated endorsement of Donnyboy, he would be seen as selling out the hard core conservative wing. He would be "establishment". Now, 4 (or maybe 8 but I think 4) years from now, he will be able to keep those people under his wing and in the tent of conservatives.

So Cruz only hurt himself, which shouldn't matter to any Trump supporter, because he's unimportant. If Cruz torpedoed his career, so be it. I'd rather he be able to look himself in the mirror.

423 "converted to Islam"

Problem with islam is that it is the religion officially (but secretly) supported by the US Federal Government. Religion of thugs and thuggery.

At one time the KKK was a state supported religion in some states. Unions are state supported religions in some states. And so on and so forth.

People who want to kill seek out their excuse. People who want to use those people work to ban the death penalty.

424 Well, Chris Christy criticized Ted's speech on the TV afterwards, which I thought was pretty rich, considering what Christy did at the 2012 convention, and afterwards.

Politics is made up of people in political parties. They aren't robots. As I read somewhere else this morning, Ted is supposed to be a very smart man, so I assume he knew what he was doing.

I am actually much more amused at the preening moral pontification of posters here who are so morally shocked at what a turrible, turrible person Donald Trump is. Goodness, he's just AWFUL.

I think some of you must not have much interaction with the rest of the human race, and especially real politicians.
Here's clue; most of them are pretty weird, egotistical people. Trump is frankly a little more out in front with it, which to me, is almost refreshing. Having actually known professional politicians and what obnoxious jackwagons most of them are (from both parties), we should all be shocked, SHOCKED, that Trump is such an obvious boorish oaf.

Cry me a river.

429 Mornin' Horde. Serious heartburn this morning from last night's events.

Operation Final Trump is off the rails. I'm in post-mortem on it now, but it looks like the GOPe chose to adapt rather than self-immolate. If only we could have forced that with a better candidate...but we fight with the weapons at hand, sadly.

Cruz' stand last night might be principled, but I suspect he is failing the "shrewd as serpents" test. Combined with what I saw late in the campaign I'm in the bizarre situation of rethinking my Cruz support before my Trump support (tepid as the latter may be). Somethin' not right with that man and it's bugging me.

Meanwhile, the Horde has graduated from circular firing squad to simply calling airstrikes on itself. I do not consider this an improvement.

Having to watch over dad is getting in the way of all the drinking I should be doing to cope with this shit.

433 ...and if you doubt it look at the headlines in your local paper this am. ...ALL about Cruz. No/little mention of Pence --who is he?

--

And this is kinda where I'm at, and why I was disappointed. Ted would've had to have known how his words were going to be played out in the media aftermath. And here we are.

I do understand how he must've struggled with an official endorsement. Donald Trump really pi$$ed me off during the primaries with his ridiculous attacks, the Lyin' Ted stuff and worst of all, the childish side-by-sides of Melania and Heidi. No doubt about it, it was abhorrent. He gave a great speech last night. But nobody will remember anything about it, hear anything about it, or hear about any other highlights of other good speeches either. The MFM have landed on the lack of an official endorsement like flies on a pile of crap. And Cruz didn't have to give them that ammunition, knowing what would likely happen if he didn't. He didn't have to kiss Donald's ring, but a simple vote for Trump over Hillary would've sufficed.

You can damned well bet that Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren will fully endorse the Hildabeast at her convention, despite their differences.

438 As for Ted? This was his best play...and possibly the best play for the party. If he just came out and gave a full throated endorsement of Donnyboy, he would be seen as selling out the hard core conservative wing. He would be "establishment". Now, 4 (or maybe 8 but I think 4) years from now, he will be able to keep those people under his wing and in the tent of conservatives.

Ted Cruz could have played it by saying exactly what a lot of us are saying here:

"Hey, Trump wasn't my first choice, my second choice, or even my fourth choice back February. But today, in the here and now, he is THE choice. The important thing here is to stop Hillary Clinton, and Donald Trump is the man to do it which is why I'll be voting for him in November and I urge you to do the same."

He could have gone that way and made clear that in this case, pragmatism has to come before nobly sinking with the USS Principle.

491 let's be honest - regardless of what politics is - if Trump said those things about my wife and father... well in the old days he would have been carried out on a stretcher.

I think Ted Cruz let if off easy, cut him some slack, you don't need him - you need his former supporters. Picking a fight with them over this is pure stupidity if your goal is actually winning an election. Unless of course it's not about winning an election but merely look like you were trying to win but got undercut by those stupid conservatives (win/win for democrats).

Told him when they met face to face 10 days ago, and again 2 days ago. Trump also saw Cruz practice the speech yesterday, so he knew the content. No one was burned or set up, they both made informed decisions. Kabuki theater, 3-D chess, whatever.

This goes along with what Don Jr. said last night to Hannity after the convention. Sean breathlessly and without pause, started babbling about what did Don Jr. think of Cruz not endorsing his father and why would his dad offer a speaking spot to Cruz if he thought he wasn't going to endorse him.

Don Jr. looked at Hannity kind of puzzled and said, "My father wouldn't bar someone from speaking because they aren't endorsing him", then tried to answer Hannity about the endorsement while Hannity was interrupting him, asking again WHY wouldn't Ted endorse him at the convention. DonJr. shrugged and said, "I don't know why you would come to a convention and not endorse the convention's candidate" and then immediately started talking about the other speakers, etc. He would not take any more bait from Hannity and he simply went on to what was important about what was said last night.

--

I didn't say the comparison was personal. Sanders and Warren have a lot of ideological differences with Clinton. That won't stop them from being there to endorse the hag next week.

Look, Trump was an ass. I said that. I understand that. I've always been fully 100% behind Ted Cruz. I voted for him. I've seen him speak on several occasions. I would've loved nothing more than to see him become our nominee. But that time has passed and we are where we are. It's either Trump or Cankles. Cruz made a great case for conservatism and the Constitution last night, as he always does. But will Ted be voting for Donald? What will his conscience tell him? Based on what he said last night, I don't have an answer to that question. Do you? Therein lies the problem with how his words were received by LIVs and others who don't live and breathe politics. What exactly was the message?

537 You guys are absolutely right. Cruz is small because he came to the RNC convention and talked about liberty, the constitution, the rule of law, and the damage that overreach of government does, and he did not act like the entire staff of CNN about their own candidate.

He is small because after a man calling him a liar, his wife ugly, and accusing his father of both being a murderer and being in league with communists he came to support him as the candidate of his party, and the best option for the nation, and did not sh*t all over him.

Further, you are all correct because this gaffe of Cruz' will make the MFM say bad things about Donald Trump, and they will not support him, and will do everything in their power to make him look like a loser loon failure who will enslave everyone, cause a coup and eat your pets.

And your logic is dead on, because one thing has been proven over and over again if a Republican does what the major media outlets demand, they give him preferential treatment and in no way try to destroy his reputation and impugn his motives.

I'm not upset because I know that most of what falls out of Teh Donald's mouth - support for Erdogan, screw NATO, I'm going to order our soldiers to kill civilians - will be opposed by an absolute wall of Democrat legislators and virtually all of the GOP. A President Trump will have his feet held to the fire by the left and the quislings of the right in a way they have never held the dog-eating crackhead to account.

Here's the difference - President Trump says, "I'm shutting down the IRS," and the response is, "like hell you are!" President Hillary says "I want a nationwide gun confiscation," and the response is, "YES, Madam President!"

I think Beckett got what he wanted, martyrdom.

I also think Henry won the argument.

England is hardly Catholic these days and soon will not be Christian at all, the monarchy rolls on.

====================

Um...what?

Henry II won the argument against Beckett because the country went secular hundreds of years later? Or because Henry VIII broke with the church?

That's history taking a new course hundreds of years later, not Henry besting Beckett in any sort of argument.

557 This goes along with what Don Jr. said last night to Hannity after the convention. Sean breathlessly and without pause, started babbling about what did Don Jr. think of Cruz not endorsing his father and why would his dad offer a speaking spot to Cruz if he thought he wasn't going to endorse him.
...
Playing like a fiddle. Trump is now the enigmatic uniter. He plays the media game better than the media. Hillary's convention will be Fleetwood Mac and ticker tape...the tried and true. Which was fine 25 fucking years ago.
The electorate doesn't like "scripted" anymore. Look a television...what gets the buzz? Canned laugh track formula sitcoms or "unscripted" "reality" tv?

Hillary's campaign is an episode of Melrose Place. Trumps is Survivor meets the Kardashians.

All I'd add is this, Luntz had a focus group of independents yesterday who all liked what Cruz did and then went to say it reflected well on trump for letting him speak knowing there wasn't an endorsement coming; they felt more reassured that he won't surround himself with yes men..so maybe a win win situation. Because it's really all about the so called independents right?

Trump signed the pledge in September 2015. Google RNC Trump signs pledge and feel free to read it at your favorite website, it's on all the major ones.

If someone can't handle the rough and tumble world of politics, they shouldn't be in it. Trump has said that he regrets the photo of Heidi Cruz and that he shouldn't have done it. Then he moved on. Just like he moved on from Cruz not endorsing him and acting like a nasty little high schooler, and actually went to Cruz and offered him a spot in the convention.

I'm far more impressed with someone who acknowledges that something they did was a mistake, they regret it, apologizes, and then moves on. It's actually how you have to be in the private sector, You cannot hold grudges at every single business dealing that goes wrong. You cannot fire every single employee that screws up, or revenge on every competitor. You will not survive in the business world, either personally or professionally.

Politics is even more like that. You have to be able to stake your position, and fight for it, but you have to move on and you cannot proudly make everyone in the Senate or House your enemy.

Cruz has spent the better part of 4 years trying to burn that thing to the ground. He's shiv'd the leaders of the party on multiple occasions. Now he needs to play nice with Donald because "he's the Party's Nominee." I don't get it.

615 By the way, Donald has a chance to do tonight what so many of you wanted Cruz to do, just get over it and move on.

Here's betting he doesn't.

616 563 Didn't Trump himself say that he wasn't going to follow the pledge?

So we hold it against Trump, but not Cruz?

I hold it against neither of them. I think it was dumb.

Just a question.

617 Cruz helped Trump.

Cruz helped Trump create a wall between Trump and the Bush family. And a wall between Trump and wall street. Heidi works for Goldman Sachs. Ted and Heidi were volunteers in the Bush campaign.

Much better than an endorsement.

618 Hillary left people to die. So far, I have never heard the same of Trump. He is the only option to defeat her, as unfortunate as that is. If you want someone that glibly lied in front of coffins to save her own political future as CIC, that is your choice. I'll take the vulgar guy over the evil woman.

619 The entire "pledge" thing from the RNC came about because Trump had such strong public support and the RNC was aghast at the prospect of Trump getting the nomination. So they began a campaign to find someone, anyone who they could support instead, hence Jeb, Kasich, etc. Trump knew they were working behind the scenes to destroy his campaign and he simply said if that happened, he would consider running third party. So the RNC panicked and decided they needed to stop that avenue, so that they could try to keep Trump supporters in the Republican column. They NEVER thought he would win the nomination, the pledge was directed at him. But they had to ask everyone for that same pledge.

Everyone eagerly said yes, because they also knew the pledge was designed to box in Trump, whom they thought would not win the nomination, either because of not enough votes in the states, or that they could count of the RNC elites to sabotage Trumps campaign or delegate counts , etc.

Trump held out for a long time, until he knew that the RNC could not possible sabotage his campaign without it being obvious, had a meeting with Reince and then signed the pledge.

That is smart. What Ted did was not smart, but seems to be predictable.

2 potential tracks:

1) Relatively milquetoast scripted speech about how we're gonna beat Crooked Hillary, and oh, Trump is just the coolest.

2) Weird tirade that touches on every topic known to man where he says fifteen things that any other politician would need to lick boot to get people to forgive (like, "vote your conscience").

Either way, it will be the most brilliant piece of statesmanship since John Adams gained the nickname "His Rotundity".

621 One of y'all mentioned Sam Houston. Didn't he lose a lot because he didn't support secession during the civil war? Unless I'm missing something, Sam Houston wasn't who y'all think he is.

622 I'm always a day late and a dollar short around here when it comes to posting and such, but boy howdy, there sure is a lot of whining, gnashing of teeth, and general loud lamentations regarding Cruz's speech last night, although I could not infer from all the comments just what it was, specifically, that he said that has so many of you upset.

So, I read a transcript of the guy's speech. And frankly, boys and girls, I don't see the problem here. He congratulated Trump on winning the nomination, and proceeded to give what I thought was a very good speech on what the Republican Party was SUPPOSED to be all about.

It's not about the party. It's about the intelligence to know that Cruz is a member of that party. If he doesn't like it, he could leave. I'd actually respect that decision. What he did last night looked petulant.

Posted by: GMan at July 21, 2016 10:26 AM (sxq57)

625 I mean, if Cruz has the intelligence to remember he's a member of the party, rather than an independent.

He pissed in his party's punchbowl. That's all.

....

He didn't lose. he was president (twice), senator and governor of Texas, as well as governor of Tennessee.

He was removed from office for refusing to support secession, and as it turned out, he was right. It took, what, about 100 years for the south to fully recover from Reconstruction.

629 CNN, Mar. 29:
Cooper: "Do you still pledge to support whoever the Republican nominee is?"
Trump: "No, I don't anymore."

I'm doing what Cruz said; voting my conscience. that's why I'm voting for Trump.

But he was an asshole. Having Pecker publish Ted's "affairs", the JFK crap with his dad, attacking Heidi because someone else published the naked pictures of Melania that Trump took in 2000 to publicize a Reform Party run. Ted's right.

I'll support Trump, but I won't drink his Kool-Aid. We need to put Country First.

And that includes Trump, too.

631 Dan Aykroyd referred to those who criticized the new "Ghostbusters" movie as likely Trump supporters and KKK members. "Probably no jobs. I would say you're looking at obese white men between 50 and 60", said the 64-year-old fat white Canadian man who hasn't done much work in the last 20 years that wasn't "Ghostbusters" or "Blues Brothers" related. Look in the mirror lately, Dan?

Cruz didn't explicitly endorse Trump, but put a case together what we would expect from Hillary and thus indirectly did so by listing all the things we are fighting for (freedom of speech, freedom of religion, RTKABA, etc.) and told the audience not to stay home, but vote their conscience in November. What did Trump expect? He called the man a liar ("Lyin' Ted") repeatedly and insulted the man's wife, a call for which I'm sure the Don would be less than forgiving about. It's also up to Don to prove his Conservative bonnifides with more than words. Pence may be a good step in that direction.
