The Good Parts of Day Two of the Convention: Dana White, Chris Christie, Donald Trump Jr.
One of the lucky breaks Trump got is that by having his convention boycotted by many of the Same Old Politicians (many of them failed and forgotten) that usually populate these snoozefests, he wound up grabbing more novel speakers, like UFC President Dana White.
The speech I'm really looking forward to is Peter Thiel's. Chris Christie presented his "indictment" of Hillary Clinton, and Donald Trump Jr. laid out a fairly strong document for conservative governance -- with one big exception. He railed a bit about a rigged system in which corporate cronies benefit at the expense of the country. I know the donor class considers that a heresy -- all 2000 of them. The other 50 million Republicans don't, though. The best speech is Trump, Jr.'s. Even Trump critic Rich Lowry said of his speech that he wouldn't mind if Trump, Jr. turned out to be the "chief ideologist" of a Trump presidency. It's reassuring to hear actual conservative notes being sounded by a Trump -- even if you do strongly wonder if it's all just a continued scam. By the way, Trump Jr. deftly handled the potential class-envy issue. Rather than running away from the fact that he was born with all the advantages, he noted that explicitly, and said he wanted everyone to have the advantages he was lucky enough to have -- like being able to have school choice. I should note his worst line comes early, when he portrays the millionaire's son Trump as an underdog who everyone told couldn't "make it Manhattan" because he was a born a lowly "Queens boy."Comments

This is one of the most notable divides between the elites and tea partiers/conservatives. In fact, one can see elements of this in most of the Uniparty platform.
The elites don't want to have to hob knob with middle managers or technologists, and they CERTAINLY don't want to have to associate with plumbers and NCOs - and if it costs them a bit of economic benefit to keep the middle and working classes down and away from them, the elites are more then willing to pay those costs.

As an observer, I thought he sounded like someone who actually believes most of it. I enjoyed the connection to the blue collar work. This is the type of populist speech that the GOP has been missing on. He didn't go full populist like Donald does which turns me off.
School choice, regulatory state, etc. All very good and typical conservative fair.
As Drew said, Trump Jr. made a much better case for Trump than Trump ever has.

Fox News Channel led prime-time coverage Monday with 5.5 million viewers from 8 to 11 p.m. ET, a gain of 7% over 2012. CNN saw a far bigger Trump bump as its prime-time audience of 3.6 million viewers was up 200% from 2012. MSNBC was up 46% to 1.9 million viewers.
More than 22 million viewers watched across cable and broadcast networks during the 10 p.m. ET hour that featured an appearance by Trump and a speech by his wife, Melania.

I think that hits it on the head, it was a synthesis of traditional conservative ideas with a touch of the populism focused in the correct areas. If the GOP is going to survive in 2017 forward, there has to be a plan to do that.
Other candidates had made that argument about the regulatory state helping mega-corporations (Carly did, Cruz did, even Rubio touched on it). I would have expected a guy who built buildings and had to defend himself about donations to politicians could have made a great argument to the effect of "I just wanted to create something great and I had to go through all this political regulatory bullcrap and deal with meddling bureaucrats who don't know anything about industry and basically buy them off not to arbitrarily destroy me." I don't know if Trump actually sees his buildings that way anymore, but it seemed like his son saw it that way, and it had definite libertarian appeal.

Truth is, we were all deceived, I think, by the message, and not the actions of the GOP, for a very long time. It's actually kind of understandable. People are inherently optimistic and when the Repubs said, "Greatest country on earth; patriotic Americans; the great American middle class; making and keeping America great; all of that BS they never meant, we wanted to be hearing the truth. We believed them when they told us that they were frustrated by the other side. Only recently did we catch on the the fact that this was all just theater and that they were working for a whole other class of people, many not even Americans, and that they had only their own self interest at heart and that the good of the country never even figured into their calculus.

This was actually quite a topic of discussion on CNN with Anderson Cooper a few months ago, when Donald, Donald Jr., Ivanka and Eric were all on together. I am not sure if Tiffany was on with them. She is the youngest and pretty quiet in comparison.
Donald Jr, Eric and Ivanka are all Ivana Trump's kids, and I think she had a large hand in how they turned out.

Hillary's ad which features static shots of kids watching a TV screen, cut to sounds of Trump saying hyperbolic stuff "I could shoot somebody on Fifth Avenue" et cetera, was effective.
I mean - even knowing the political angle and the backstory - my reaction was "Damn, that's effective."

Maybe on younger people. When I saw the tagline I laughed, because wasn't it Bill Clinton who was responsible educating a whole generation on oral sex? Many kids learned about that before they normally would have thanks to the nightly news coverage of the Lewinsky affair.

There are an awful lot of leftists acting like they expect Trump to win. It could just be voicing their worst fears, but who knows what is going on in the heads of the radical left these days?
Remember in 2012 though, the Obama campaign and the press were acting like they expected him to lose. And maybe, if it hadn't been for the grossly overplayed storm and Christie's hand holding beach walk, not to mention Romney totally dropping the ball there, maybe Obama wouldn't have been able to get it into the margin of fraud.

or will he give a big ole "look at me" bag o'crap speech like the Fat Man did last convention and damage his own career?
Or worse, will he, give one of those boring recitation of points speeches like he did after winning Iowa?
I voted for Cruz' but thus far I haven't been impressed with his actions, or actually lack thereof, since he bowed out.
I really hope, cuz I'd like Prez Cruz in the future, that he doesn't turn this into a little bitch moment becuz he's been listening to some of the bitter cranks like Mark Levin (who I used to listen to and respect but who totally seems to have lost what common sense he ever had)-
because that will neither benefit him nor us.

Trump's story of being an underdog is silly of course, but so was Obama's. Barry grew up in comfort in Honolulu, looked after and provided for by his grandparents. He attended the most expensive and exclusive private school on the island. Then, despite being a pothead and a slacker (by his own account), he somehow (cough . . . affirmative action . . . cough) was able to transfer to Ivy League Columbia University, and then get accepted to Harvard Law (using both affirmative action and legacy preferences, as Obama, Sr., was a Harvard alum).
Not exactly the life of struggle and hardship and "outsider" status (poor black boy, born to a single mother, etc.) that was depicted during Obama's own nominating process in 2008. BTW, did you know that Obama's "typical white woman" grandmother left him $500k of Bank of Hawaii stock when she died? Oh, the humanity! The suffering and deprivation that poor Barry had to endure before becoming president is almost too awful to contemplate!
