Portrait of Baldassare Castiglione
Raphael

As some of you may have noticed, I really like portraits, and this one is particularly appealing because of the openness and friendliness of of the subject. Whether that is true, or an embellishment on Raphael's part? I have no idea. But Baldassare Castiglione was no slouch. He was a political master, so I may be misreading his face.

Or.....

The face of a man at peace, knowing that all of his enemies are dead.

As Rush has pointed out, Politics is Hollywood for Ugly People.
Such as it ever was perhaps.

Successful politicians know how to rub shoulders, how to look concerned, when to point and smile, etc.

They usually have very good command of their facial expressions, so their face can support the lies coming out of their mouths.

So that look on Castiglione could easily be saying "I feel your pain."
Or, it could also mean "Sorry. You fucked up and will be found in a ditch tomorrow, sans head."

Nice portrait at any rate.

32 Amateurs might ask why the perfect arc across his brow doesn't conform to the uneven brim of his chapeau.

Amateurs might ask that. What they'd be unlikely to realize is that Castiglione is very bald, and there's a misshapen, PacMan-like hole in the wall behind him that leads into a nearly perfectly black room.

36 Poking through the various Raphael paintings and it looks like he had good days and cartoony days. (granted his cartoony days are so beyond my skill . . .)
The portraits are fabulous, but the others are more forced.
I suppose that is a function of telling the story, and I am sure his patrons would have found the idea that a painting says "pretty mill, quiet snow all is ok" as opposed to "victory of archangel Michael over the demon showing the power of God" to be a sore waste of paint.

Of course the idea that art should look pretty or should be about something is a long argument. It is the question of craft versus art, and if there really is a valid distinction.

40 CBD, Thanks for another wonderful painting. I love Raphael's muted, simple background which allows the subject to almost pop out of the frame. And the way he captured the light gleaming on the clothes is great. It would be fantastic to see this, and Raphael's other works, close up.

I don't see 'friendly' looking at this. He strikes me as capable, intelligent, and could be a tough customer if needed. I wonder how SJW would respond to this work since Castiglione looks very masculine.

51 Good example of just how good those renaissance portraits can be. Take a look at the furs. Raphael was one of those artists who managed to blend northern detail with italian realism. Photography couldnt't manage this quality until, say, the 50's or 60's.

From the sidebar, I'm saddened by the passing of Garry Marshall. He was a solid TV and film director (creator of "Happy Days" and director of "The Flamingo Kid" and "Pretty Woman" most notably).

Kept his politics to himself, from what I gather, although his sister Penny Marshall was at one time married to Meathead.

RIP and thanks for the memories, Garry Marshall.

And a certain candidate could hint that the left-wing, censoring platform might want to reconsider its standards, lest they find themselves on the wrong end of an audit, RICO suit, sexual harassment case and any other federal government hammer such a candidate could get his hands on.

Since I was Willowed last thread:

349 Hey Horde, all of social media and not just Twitter has pledged support to progressive fascism, and they're willing to do so despite knowing it will affect them economically.

Remember in the spring when Hellarys minions went to the west coast and had a meeting with the heads of social media? They said it was a fundraiser, but word got out that they had pledged to help shape the narrative between then and the election.

So Twitter is just one. Yes they are paying the price but don't care. Those in the know have moved assets away from harm, no doubt. After it sells, after the election, they'll claim some renewed commitment to free speech and all will be forgiven.

101 Fake or Fortune this week was on an alleged Lucian Freud portrait of a man. Not a fan of Freud but the program was interesting. Freud attended a school in Essex in an old Tudor manor house. Freud gave the portrait to a fellow student to paint on the back since there was a canvas due to the war. The person gave it to someone else etc. Freud always denied he painted it but since it was his style, no one believed it. Freud was a nasty character and it was not the first instance that he would deny painting a painter or claim that it was unfinished and someone else finished it. He did it to screw with people. Anyway, all these painters were squabbling all the time. The guy who he originally gave the painting to went on to do the early James Bond book covers.

The Italian Military had difficulty with regional dialects in WWII. Units from different parts of the country could not effectively communicate with others.

When I spent some time there in the early '80s I was struck by how much Italy was a collection of individual states rather than a single unified country.

I wonder if that is slowly passing away due to modern communications.

Well, as I've said before, D-Lamp was a prophet without honor. And as others have said, you get more of what you subsidize. In Obamerica, hatred against the right is subsidized by the DNC/MFM/FedGov cabal, and there is no consequence for actions.

GQ is not going to fire this "writer," and even if they're not high-fiving him, they certainly approve of what he said. They also know that the right has no fight in them, and that all they have to do is wait until the next outrage squirrel comes along and the storm will pass.

D-Lamp made the point, and I totally agree - until people feel actual, real-world consequences for their actions and speech, they will continue to push the envelope to out-and-out physical violence. I know what my response would be. I know what Pat Smith's response ought to be. And until that is the immediate, go-to response, nothing will change.

Essentially, Hillary maxes out the moment she announces. She has never gained in popularity -- only lost."

This may explain why.

Most high level politicians are extroverts. Some like Obama are not, but know how to fake it. Hillary is a misanthrope -- she hates people -- and she can't always hide it.

When Hillary runs she tries to keep herself in a bubble. But if you run you can't always hide.

Once again, I can't think of anything that will happen between now and November that will help Hillary but can think of a lot of things that can happen that will hurt her. Obama won't be a help, as Hillary will get blamed while Obama gets the pass he always does. e.g. BLM .

Hillary instincts are bad. She continues to act like she's running to be governor of a Deep Blue state. So positions on things like BLM and gun control will pile up votes in states like MA and MD she was going to win anyway, but will hurt her elsewhere.

Around 1960, the Italian government started requiring students to learn a standard Italian language.

Before that, Italian dialects were so different that they were (as you said) like foreign languages to one another.

At the same time, Italian immigrants in America refused to speak Italian because their old-country dialect would betray everything about their backgrounds. A lot of people didn't want that. Many insisted on only English at home not so much to assimilate as Americans but to put their old lives behind them.

An odd thing about visiting Rome: Movies and photos do not give you a proper sense of scale.

I was surprised (although this is not the right word, bemused?) at the scale of:
Pantheon
Coliseum (this one especially. You get the idea from movies that it is larger than most sports coliseums today. Nope.)

The buildings that really seemed far larger? The Churches. St. Peter's and the square in front are just gigantic. Almost too massive to really grasp. St Paul Outside the Walls is also huge, but it is deceptive because compared to most of the other churches in town, it is an exercise in minimalism.

235 Trump has already passed peak negative, so attack ads won't work. His negatives are also of a different quality than Hillary's. Over two-thirds of potential voters think she's untrustworthy.

Common wisdom is that the electoral map favors the Ds, but it actually gives more voting power to flyover states. IIRC, a vote in Wyoming in worth more than 2 votes in CA. Hillary can win the popular vote like Gore did, but still lose.

If you look into the polls, there's already a strong momentum shift to Trump. I don't see this changing.

Expect Hillary's convention to be lackluster, even if the likes of Beyonce show up. It'll be like a forced visit to see that elderly aunt that everyone hates.

103 There were Castigliones in my town, too. They pronounced it CAST-a-line (as opposed to Cas-tig-lee-OH-nee).

We were mostly Calabrese in my 'hood, so it was pronounced "cast-ill-ee-OWN." Calabrians tend to drop the last vowel.

Don't know how to show it phonetically but the "igli" is like the "illi" in the word "millionaire."

Posted by: WhatWhatWhat? - Some People Call Me Maurice at July 20, 2016 10:21 AM (WlGX+)

The Italo-American pronunciation, from my perspective as Brooklyn
Jew, is Cas-TIG-lee-own. In Italy, it would be Cas-TEEL-yo-nee.

We have a street here near the racetrack named that, after the famous chess champion, I'm told. Probably nobody who lives around there now can pronounce it in any fashion; this is a town that pronounces the street name "Socrates" as "SO-Krats." Before you know it, Castiglione Street will probably get renamed for Cap'n Kenya himself.

The finale is arguably the most dramatic in all of opera.

The best version I've seen so far is from the Met's 1987 season with Jessye Norman. The first drop of the knife was so percussive that the chorus physically jumped.

Poulenc had his Carmilites sent off with his "Salve Regina", but the Carmelites of Compegnie departed this world singing the Gregorian chant "Veni Creator Spiritus".

It all depends on what her internal poling is telling her. Thus far, she has not acted like someone who has sewn up the nomination for her party. On the other hand, she could feel from Obama's example that she does not need the center or any from the right, and hence just needs to boost her turnout. Expect her to either try to mitigate her strategy by picking a 'safe' pick, or going further into it by picking a minority candidate. In short, who the hell knows, but it is fun to speculate.

Not a bad thing. Rioters have to behave or they overshadow her announcement. Makes it even worse if she does pick a minority veep - looks like appeasement, mobilizes one minority and turns off everyone else. Trump's acceptance speech quietly disappearing is not bad either - notice how his low profile has helped his numbers. Suddenly the idea of him as major party candidate doesn't seem so crazy. Ha! Never heard that term.

We have that here, too. One of the most widespread American dialects is Inland North (aka the Great Lakes accent) which is spoken from roughly Milwaukee and along the US shores of the Great Lakes and down New York state's Mohawk River valley almost to Schenectady.

Except for Erie, PA.

Erie is just about the same distance from Cleveland, Buffalo and Pittsburgh. But when it comes to television, it gravitates to Pittsburgh. It makes sense because the other two cities are in different states - who wants to hear about Ohio or New York happenings when you live in Pennsylvania, right?

As a result, the prevalent accent in Erie has evolved to resemble Pittsburgh's.

The funny thing is neither wrote their speech, and the phrases in question are stock, generic phrases that have been said a million times. Michelle Obama wasn't the first person to craft those words in that way.

But no, we have to keep this story alive until every LIV imbecile thinks that the rich white bitch "stole" from our glorious FLATUS.....

Used to know a girl who told me she had a pen pal (hey, remember pen pals?) in Alabama. He finally got a chance to come out to California and meet her, and they started talking about accents, because his Southern drawl was rather pronounced. He referred to his hosts as "TV talkers" and they didn't know what he meant until they realized that most of the television seen in this country comes out of Los Angeles, and to him, that's what they all sounded like, i.e the people he watched on TV.

Noo Awlins people, at least the suburbanites who came from or are still in the working class, sound like Brooklyn cab drivers in 1940s movies -- "dese" for "these," "hawt" for "heart," and so forth. Here it's called "Nint' Ward," or "Yat" (from the favored expression "Where y'at?" for "How are you?"). Watching the old Bowery Boys comedies as a kid, I sort of learned Brooklynese/Yat as a second language.

But then, this is a town which pronounces "Burgundy" the street as "Bur-GUN-dee," not like "BUR-gun-dee" the wine, and "Melpomene" the street as "Mel-po-meen."

I lived in Lafayette, LA, in the late '70s -- the "big city" to the Cajuns, I guess. The main thing I picked up on with them was their tendency to reaffirm a declarative sentence ("I got a good deal at K-Mart, yah") or to reinforce the pronoun ("I am a proud coon-ass, me" or "Charlie is a proud coon-ass, him"). Not a lot of that among Noo Awlins suburbanites. But you're right, there are probably differences between the classic "Brooklynese" and Yat.

Posted by: FireHorse at July 20, 2016 11:01 AM (fC4Vg)

My doctor is from Milan. He was born in 1960. He told me that when he was around 19 he took some time to travel around Italy. He said the further south he went the harder it was to understand people. By the time he got to Sicily, it was like being in a foreign country.

It's funny because he gets these elderly Italian-Americans patients who want to speak the language of "the old country" with him. Because most Italian-Americans are descended from people from the south of Italy, he can't understand them.
