ESPN Turns ESPY Awards (Whatever the Fuck They Are) Into Black Lives Matter Rally

Christian Toto says ESPN has transformed itself into a (lightly) sports-themed MSNBC.

Larry O'Connor points out the glaring hypocrisy of ESPN turning itself into a left-wing political pageant while firing right-leaning people for expressing their political opinions in their private citizen capacity.

A reader wrote to me and said he was taken by my description of ESPN as "The View for Men."

I don't remember saying that, but I endorse it. ESPN is a girlish, gay chat channel like Bravo that features slightly less house-flipping and slightly more homoerotic tributes to the physical male ideal.

It's evil, it's stupid, it's a waste of your time, and it's time to block the channel so that you're never tempted to give them your money ever again.

27 The ESPYs. I watched part of the first ones way back when ESPN was actually about sports and Sports Center was funny. It was awful. Not only was it dull and stupid (awards for sports??) but they ran it like a group of rather dull 5th graders. The sound was messed, up nobody knew where to go, the production values were terrible. Its gotten slicker but gone downhill since then.

Seriously, who watches award shows? Anyone here? Because... why?

Just how do the BLM and Anarchist and Acorners get all those folks out to protest? How do they get the word out? How do they organize??? How do you get 1000 people to show up to shut down 405 Freeway in LA?

Only thing I can come up with is Social Media.... FaceBook... Twitter... no way they are emailing or calling all these folks....

Sooo... now we have both FaceBook and Twitter Shadow banning, if not outright banning Conservative leaning groups.... thus making it HARD to organize to create counter protests...

207 "NPR delivered an adoring tongue bath to Kaine just yesterday."

And come to think of it, not yesterday but a couple of days ago, I caught an NPR piece talking about a devastated municipal economy.

What was the source of the devastation? Not Obamanomics, silly rabbit. No, it was Wal-Mart. In this case, the *closure* of the local Wal-Mart.

Now for many many years now, it's been a robotically chanted mantra on the left that Wal-Mart is pure evil. So why is closing one bad? Because the local liberal political pukes had taken the gusher of sales tax money which arrived with Wal-Mart, and spent wildly, and completely overcommitted the community finances, and now that the store is gone, holy cannoli, where's the money coming from now?

The NPR piece didn't delve into demographics, but they did mention the name of the town (Fairfield, AL). I looked it up. Heavy black majority and a crime rate three times the national average. No wonder Wal-Mart had to bail. The shoplifting and inventory shrinkage numbers must have been horrific. Not to mention that now, the locals dependent upon EBT, WIC and SNAP to feed themselves have lost access to a key distribution arm of the welfare state.

Anyway, it now seems that Wal-Mart are damned if they do and damned if they don't, so far as the left and NPR are concerned. Open a Wal-Mart? You're cruelly crushing mom and pop businesses! Close down a Wal-Mart? You're heartlessly denying the poor their access to entry level jobs and affordable merchandise!

Probably a couple of things mainly.

1) They're generally run by people who consider Rudy Giuliani to be hard right. People who grew up in high social circles, never went to church regularly, and don't know what oikophobia is although one of their favorite words is xenophobia.

2) The left has gotten very good at getting very loud with very small numbers. They can amplify their voices very well. So when it comes to feedback, you have a quiet bunch of people who like things the way they are and a screechy subset that want things made differently. Who do the corporations listen to in that case?

282 Sportscasting is a fun job, so all kinds of people get into it. Some are douchebags, some are frustrated jocks, or frustrated "real" journalists, but for the most part, at the HS/College/Amateur levels, it's just people who like competition, from Video Games to Baseball to Archery, for it's own sake, and politics rarely enter into it. The biggest d-bags in sports commentary have been the biggest successes so far, but Streaming Live events cuts into the monopoly on air time enjoyed by the Network/Cable kingmakers.

I used to think it was silly to boycott with your pocketbook, pageviews, etc, but now I'm on board. I also encourage people to drop a line on Twitter to ESPN to let them know how you feel. Companies take bad posts pretty seriously, and it's there for everyone to see. Fuck ESPN.

Funny thing is, YouTube has pretty much become the original MTV. Yes, videos are still being made. You might occasionally have to endure a commercial. But if you searcj for then click on an artists name then add 'playlist' - most likely you're going to find hours of music and video from that artist.

It's really pretty damn good. At a certain end point in the playlist you're gonna find some really bad stuff. But that's why G-d invented the remote.

Been watching Hannah Montana reruns in the AM instead.

Posted by: Henry Hotlove at July 14, 2016 05:24 PM (u32s7)

424 Separate from ESPN's political leanings, I stopped watching ESPN a decade ago (other than for live sports). There hot take coverage is awful, their big market focus is annoying to those of us who actually like sports regardless of whether its the Yankees or Royals playing. There over coverage of the NFL & under coverage of sports they don't have contracts with sucks.

I was hoping Fox Sports 1 was going to be a channel for actual sports fans, but instead it just copied the ESPN hot take formula.

Posted by: Blooshier at July 14, 2016 10:23 PM (TXtUa)

425 ESPN may have gone "A Bridge Too Far" today, hosting President Obama's townhall on gun violence, an overtly political presentation with no sports connection whatsoever. The comments on their Facebook page were overwhelmingly negative, with about half being in the vein of, "That's it. We're done." ESPN's advertisers must have had an earful, or else ESPN saw the comments and realized they had pushed the envelope to a point that threatened to damage them severely with their core audience. In any case, ESPN yanked the whole thing off Facebook before I had a chance to add my own, "That's it, I'm done." But too late, former sports network; I AM done, and not just with your network. I'm tired of having one-sided politics shoved down my throat on a constant basis from every quadrant of the entertainment world. My wife and I are cutting the cable. Pretty sure I can live without it at this point.

Posted by: Bitsko at July 15, 2016 12:34 AM (e8vZr)

426 ESPN hasn't shied away from its open racism lately. They allow Kevin Blackison to essentially excuse the Dallas killings, Mike Wilbon continuously calls white quarterbacks "fair haired and fragile" and other comments saying they're weak and protected, and now they're airing another Obama infomercial cohosted by BLM cheerleader and anti-cop ass Jemele Hill

ESPN costs subscribers almost as much as all the other channels combined - and if you get cable or satellite, you have no choice, you pay for the Extra Sh*tty Poof Network...
