So Donald Trump said in an interview about keeping the senate Republican, "well, it would be nice if they can do that, but I can work as an independent agent."

Yes, I'm sure majority leader Schumer will gladly support those originalist nominees to SCOTUS.

Fuck. Depressing.

That is interesting. And understandable. Hillary's stench of incompetence and 'unintentional' lawbreaking has now overridden the necessity of lying to pollsters about intentions to vote for Trump. It could be a groundswell of epic proportions by the time Trump gets the official nod and picks a running mate. With the DNC convention a couple weeks after the RNC, it could spell a monumental headache for the democrats.

Facebook allowed that graphic drawing of a black thug slitting the throat of a white cop (with the cop's hands bound behind his back) to remain up on its site, despite repeated complaints about it. They said the disgusting image of a cop being murdered "does not violate our community standards."

58 1. Drudge sneaks in some really dodgey sources sometimes; he's got a link about a new Russian bomber that goes to a Russian propaganda page. This is right up there with his blind links to Prison Planet.

2. If Trump wants to be daring he will pick a Latina; if he wants to play it safe he will pick Pence; if he's poorly advised he will pick Christie. It will be revealing however it goes.

3. Here's hoping everybody's day is as good as possible under the circumstances.

84 Good Morning Morons!

In today's polling news, the fallout from the FBI investigation continues to hurt Clinton significantly. She might have skated on being indicted, but she is suffering greatly in the court of public opinion.

Two new polls were released yesterday that confirm what Rasmussen detected. Clinton has lost significant support in the last week, and Trump has slightly increased support.

Economist/YouGov, which I still think might be an online methodology, released their weekly poll. In one week the race went from a Clinton lead of 47-42 to a lead of 45-43.

Also CBS/NYT released their monthly poll, showing an even more dramatic change over a month. Clinton's June lead of 43-37 has been erased and it is now a 40-40 tie.

One *theory* that I have is that with 4 candidates on the ballot, it is possible that this race could be similar to the GOP primary. Trump has a very loyal plurality of voters who will stick with him through thick and thin. With the opposition to him being in such disarray, and the Democrat candidate being toxic, a 40% level of support could be enough to win.

Mind you this is only a theory based on the polling numbers. But it does address one of the issues we are seeing this year that the polls have a high level of variability in Clinton support.

Overall the RCP average is now down to Clinton +3.6%.

There were also a number of state polls released yesterday, but I haven't looked at them other than the Q poll. I do know that the others weren't nearly as bad for Clinton as the Q poll was.

strangely, krauthammer said newt was probably the best pick in so many words - in purely analytical terms. Said Pence wouldn't bring anything to the table, would basically not move any votes either way (or pick up new votes imho).

Newt would be good strictly for his talking and counterpoint, counterpunch abilities.

Trump and Newt are the "showbiz" picks. It just might seep into the tiny minds of tiny information voters.

Morning Dave. I appreciate all the polling info.

Question about polls work in general. How long would we expect it to take for polls to completely register the reaction from any one event (in particular Hillary's non-indictment over email)? Presumably a poll takes place over some period of time, so polls released that day wouldn't account for it. Would a week be enough time? Two weeks? How long until we can say that polls released definitely account for all the fallout?

Posted by: J.J. Sefton at July 14, 2016 08:38 AM (27m1/)

105 So far I give Trump a lot of credit for one thing, and that is he has not tried to stifle the bubbling democratic process the GOP is undergoing, as it tries to frame a new political identity. Mike Lee is out with his proposed platform, as is Ryan, as is the RNC (influenced by both Cruz and Trump).

This is a really interesting process to watch and the Democrats, with their monolithic thinking, their 70 year old leadership, their tyranny-loving administration, and their complete lack of intelligent backbenchers, ought to be really worried.

Lord only knows what being "Republican" is coming to mean, but one thing is certain: the GOP is at least trying to change. The Democrats are just dying on the vine.

153 "Question about polls work in general. How long would we expect it to take for polls to completely register the reaction from any one event (in particular Hillary's non-indictment over email)? Presumably a poll takes place over some period of time, so polls released that day wouldn't account for it. Would a week be enough time? Two weeks? How long until we can say that polls released definitely account for all the fallout?"

----------

It doesn't take that long, but you have to account for some time delays.

1) The issue has to enter the public consciousness and be digested. Depending on media attention, this can take a day or a week. Think of this as the Facebook discussion period. In the case of Clinton this happened on a Monday and the media covered it immediately, so it was fully priced into people's opinions by Friday.

2) Next you have the polling period. Polls are generally not conducted over a single day, they run for 3 to 5 days. An event needs to be fully priced in at the start of the polling period.

3) Finally you have the release delay. Polls might not be publicly released for a few days after the poll is completed.

Generally it takes at least a week to get a true view of how the public is reacting to an event, and then another week for a poll to accurately report it. Other things can delay the effect like competing news stories or a holiday weekend where no one is paying attention.

I think there might still be some damage to Clinton that isn't yet showing up in the polls. Polls released next week should have the FBI investigation fully priced in, but they will also be starting to reflect anything related to Dallas and BLM too.

186 Of course, you have to take into account the fact that most polls are just plain inaccurate, to begin with.

----------------

Polls aren't inaccurate, the problem is that people try to use them to predict the future. That isn't what they are telling you. They are providing a statistically relevant view of the public opinion at the current time. They are also each shaped by the subsample breakdowns and the methodology.

This is why I try very hard to not pick one poll and try to use it as evidence that one person is winning. This is something Ace does, and he makes himself crazy doing it. Allah is worse, because he uses the polls as confirmation bias. Anything that confirms his opinion is "solid" and anything that doesn't is "a blip in time".

Polling series, IMO, is a much better indicator. How the trend lines look over time within a single poll. That way you avoid the problems of trying to evaluate against competing methodologies.

Most polls are inaccurate. Polling companies make up the sorts of samples they think are "random" but pretty much all of that is just voodoo. And that doesn't take into account whether the people polled actually tell the pollsters the truth.

Polling is a lot of witchcraft that parades as statistics using "random samples" that are part of each polling companies "secret recipe". ANd then there are the problems of the questions the companies use. Again, these usually serve to introduce inaccuracies - and that happens intentionally and unintentionally. It's part of the characteristic of human language.

What most people do not understand about polls are those weighting numbers. When they give them they say numbers like 55% Democrat 30% Republican and 15% Independent. That doesn't mean the that is what the sampling results were. That means they used that ratio create the fudge factor to "normalize" the poll.

If they do not give the number it means that it is so biased they are embarrassed to admit it. That is why university and news polls are so bad.

246 I haven't watched Fucking Pence speak very much. What is his public persona like?
From what I have gathered, he is viewed as rather vanilla. If so, I don't know if that really helps Trump.
Trump has made his bones during this election being an attack dog, and he's done a bang up job of it. My concern is, now that we are in general election time, he may be better served by becoming more "presidential" (for lack of a better term) in order to appeal to the masses. I'm not saying he needs to become all Scott-Walker-in-the-primaries-esque, but perhaps a little more above the fray. He can't do that though unless he has someone on the under card that can keep the attacks going...ala Newt or, even as distasteful as he is on so many levels, Captain Foopah of New Jersey. Either one of those two allow him the ability and time to help alleviate one of the biggest concerns, his "tone", that has been voiced by those who don't want to vote for him, while at the same time having a surrogate that can prosecute the opposition with the best of them.

Dunno...just my 37,000 pesos worth.

Understandable, especially in the sense that he envisioned trench warfare stalemates instead of wars of maneuver and blitzkrieg.

Beyond the tactics, etc. you had people like Churchill who knew early on that Hitler had to be confronted. And that's the real comparison. Peace at any price only results in just the opposite.

But I will agree that Chamberlain was a decent man. And just before he died he admitted his failing in dealing with Hitler.

That way, when I'm talking to the American people, they'll think I'm looking at them!

You want fun? How about Smittie of Twitter "sugartits" fame as press secretary. Now that promises to entertain.

Posted by: J.J. Sefton at July 14, 2016 09:49 AM (27m1/)

309 The left has a new theme, designed to make conservatives look heartless to suburban women voters, asking "What will it take?" for Republicans to come around on gun control.

The implication they are trying to establish is there must be some number of mass killings or child murders that will finally persuade those awful Republicans to abandon the NRA.

I'd ask in response "what will it take to get Democrats to defend the Bill of Rights?, because- after all - an attack on the second amendment uses exactly the same reasoning as an attack on any other. Like the Fourth Amendment, Democrats? Well, you should defend gun rights to the last.

The truth is, of course, that you cannot persuade Democrats. They are immune from shame. They are ideologues advocating tyranny, and the press is their handmaiden.

By committing suicide, Czzerniakow abandoned those people though I cant say I wouldnt have done the same. That's why I am thankful I have never been forced to make such terrible choices that were force upon people then.

I think the leaders should have informed everyone that the nazis were shipping them to death camps. People shd have been able to decide what was best for themselves and their families.

339 200: "There are lies, damned lies, and statistics": I learned just how true that saying is in biostats. Stats in general is a discipline that's so obscure and difficult to grasp that one can put their finger on the scale and no one would be the wiser unless they were a statistician. Apply that to an innately biased subdiscipline like polling and draw your own conclusions...

Reasoning. *scoff*

You don't counter an emotional argument with reason. That's guarantee failure. You say something like...

"You must want women to be raped and murdered. Firearms make any woman equal to any attacker, no matter how big he is. Why are you so anti-women?"
