Is It the 4th?

Thomas Jefferson and John Adams both passed on this day in 1826. They didn't get along too well, stubborn Americans that we all are, but in 1812 began reconciliation through letters (and even then they argued about aristocracy and good governance). They wrote 158 letters to one another. Adams, being Adams wrote 2x as many as Jefferson.

I feel like I should know this, but sadly I don't. What was going on in

Canada in the 1770's? Why wasn't Canada part of the 13 colonies that

broke away from England? Was Canada a French colony at that time?


Canada had become a British colony after its capture during the French and Indian/Seven Year's War.

The War for Independence largely started because of concerns that the traditional
liberties of the English people were being eroded by resurgent
monarchical power, a concern that was very present in England itself (as well as Wales and Anglo-Ireland, but NOT Scotland, I believe) at
the time. The English had spent much of the preceding hundred and fifty years hashing out the limits of monarchical and parliamentary power, including a very bloody civil war, a bloody revolt that failed followed shortly by a bloodless revolution that led to a nasty little war in Ireland, and a couple Jacobite rebellions. To the British at the time these wars were fairly recent history, and they probably felt the same way about the Siege of Londonderry as we do about the Battle of the Bulge, for example. So for them, an power-seeking king was a threat to the liberties that their ancestors had fought to establish and re-awakening of a culturally-defining struggle of liberty against tyranny. (Sound familiar?)

The French, including the Canadians, had always lived under
absolutism, so they simply didn't have the cultural background of self
rule, limited monarchy, and rebellion against overly-assertive kings
that would have allowed them to sympathize with the rebellion. They
didn't much like the British either, of course, so when the Americans
invaded in 1775-6 (Quebec Expedition) they were friendly enough, but
they weren't motivated to fight for either side, I believe, and largely
stood by idly.

41 I noticed recently that the local parade has a lack of bands and band wagons. (Band wagons were a must in earlier times, I was always told, because the streets were full of potholes, and would break up a marching band)

When I was a kid, my family used to do a band-wagon, usually a hay truck with bunting. It was something to do, all my Mom's family played instruments, and a number were members in orchestras and bands. It was loads of fun.

I figured I could sponsor a prize for band wagons through the local Elk's, having them supply the judges through the parade route, and doing the presenting at the end, and the formal announcement at whatever function they wanted at the later festivities at the park.

The bands would be required to play appropriate songs, and would be judged on: did they play when they passed the judge, did they mostly get on key, and did they mostly play together?

I figure $1000 would be decent prize to split three ways. Not enough to tempt real professionals, and enough to cover the loan of a hay truck or stakebed wagon.

132 Mel Gibson's The Patriot took some liberties with history, but the overall point and feel of the movie conveys 1. Not all of the colonists were on board with leaving England. In fact, I believe the revolutionaries were a minority. Hence, Gibson's character in the movie's pacifism and reluctance to join in the fight.
2. The perseverance of those who fought despite when things looked like it was going to end badly for the colonists. Continuing the fight when your own family has been killed, etc.

The obvious difference in lifestyles and class stations between the British officers and the colonists. Neither could understand the other's life and needs and therefore, being ruled by one was ruination.

It was not a documentary. It was historical fiction. I'm always amazed at the historical purists who bitch at the details and completely overlook the overall message and theme of the movie.

Not to mention that the score is very moving and inspiring.

Speaking of purity, has anyone watched the Fox News " Legends and Lies"? I know they were produced by Bill O'Reilly, and that really doesn't give me a good feeling they are historically accurate.(which in this case, unlike The Patriot, these episodes are being touted as the "truthful" descriptiions of the subjects.

I watched a five minute blip of them last night, and was treated to a man graphically being hung, another man being beaten or whipped, a woman being dragged screaming either to her death or to watch a family member being killed, and a very ugly George Washington peering through a scope at the British on the distant hill.

Did not seem like the cerebral type of documentary I would want to watch, but more like some R rated violent movie trying to scare the hell out of people.

Cartoon is a pretty good way of describing it. Love the movie, but it only follows the broad outlines of history. Very little acknowledgement that "Taverton's" (Tarleton's) dragoons were Americans, not British, for example, and the actual reasons given for going to war in the first place are the pop culture/elementary-school version. Portrayal of the backcountry people and their relationship with the seaboard folks is, um, simplistic, and the issue of slavery is completely sidestepped.

BTW, the conversation between Cornwallis and the protagonist, in which Cornwallis protests the shooting of officers and is countered with comments about burning homes and killing families, is based on a real conversation between Francis Marion and an English colonel, but the Englishman protested the sniping of sentries, not officers, and of course the British were not killing women and children, just burning homes and crops (which was hard enough on the families involved). Interesting example of what the British actually considered a violation of the rules of war versus what modern Americans think the British objected to. Also, their standard for war crimes against civilians was actually higher than ours, which is why Gibson has to exaggerate to get the emotional effect on modern audiences....

184 Went to our small neighborhood parade. Bunch of kids riding bikes, scooters, etc. walking around the block with a fire truck tailing. Took about 10mins. They had snow cones and face painting afterwards. My son then got stung by a wasp....and so did two others we know of, on the playscape by our neighborhood pool. We found out he's not allergic luckily. The worse part for him was he got stung on the ass off all places. The righteous indignation of a 9 year old.

201 I just found a bicentennial quarter on the street, all limed and oxidized. I almost swept it up with all the debris in the gutter around the sewer grate. All that you can make out on the one side is the stuff around the rim, "Liberty" "In God We Trust" and 1776 - 1976, but the other side, with the drummer and colonial stars and eternal flame, is pretty clear. Since I spent awhile this morning despairing and getting allergic over the Declaration and then the story of Ft. McHenry and The Star-Spangled Banner it gave me a bit of the woobies. Do I believe in signs? I dunno. Does anyone else?

I washed it with some dish soap, because it is going in my memento shadow box, for sure. Wondering how I agressive I can get cleaning it up.

There is a difference between straight propaganda like Birth of a Nation and Battleship Potempkin, and a popularization to get the feel and timeline right to discuss a period that is neither taught nor well known.
Of course a straight timeline is boring, because real life includes a lot of standing around waiting and cooking and cleaning your kit, and if you intend to be a perfectionist and only follow one life and one person's story arc, a lot happens offstage and doesn't get to your main character.

Calling it a cartoon is misleading and intentionally, well, doing what you are accusing Mel Gibson of doing. Making a caricature of something to point out its flaws.

There were also positive changes for the average man like being able to sue anyone, including nobles, in civil courts. So they preferred the devil they knew.

The New England Bias is old and well known enough to have garnered its own name among historians, at least those of the southern variety.

King's Mountain is pretty well known among the reenactor/muzzleloading community, BTW. Something of a legend, actually. I'm kind of surprised that the general population isn't more aware of it.

That the Ferguson rifle was passed over in it's time, astounds me still. It would have utterly changed the battlefield in the hands of whichever army that fielded it.

Danforth is part of the old guard of the GOP, still somewhat active as a Senior Stateman. It's easy to pull and tug at these guys, because they seem to have exited the womb as curmudgeons.


He's an honorable guy though. I'm pretty sure he's on the anti-Trump bandwagon, but I can't recall exactly what he said. I can understand it, coming from his perspective, how he doesn't like the direction his Party has taken, but then he should have been just as vocal in his condemnation of Boehner and McConnell, and since he is not, I have to think his Party loyalty is misplaced.

In Iraq, Sgt. Ray Jennings commanded a five-man team that hunted high-value terrorists. On one mission, he narrowly avoided death when an IED exploded by his humvee, killing three people.

When he came back on leave in 2005 to visit his wife and children, he was arrested at gunpoint and wrongly accused of murder. There was no physical evidence or witness, but the prosecution alleged that the killer's firearms skill indicated military training.

Ray was sentenced to life in prison. Last week, after 11 years behind bars, he was freed at the request of the DA's office. It turns out the killer was a gangbanger with no military connection.

Unfortunately, the State is not offering Ray any compensation for his 11-year ordeal. He was released onto the street with no money, no clothes, and no place to stay.

I am the law student who discovered Ray's case and helped exonerate him. Now I'm trying to raise enough money to help him get back on his feet.

Used to be, for sure. Narraganset Arms made a few. Problem is that it is a bit more sophisticated than it looks - the breech is supposed to be made with a 2 percent taper (and possibly out of bronze, though I am not sure about that) otherwise it jams up very fast. Cutting threads on a tapering plug and its corresponding hole is difficult, I imagine. Also, the stock was pretty weak.

Frankly, I doubt you could improve it much by modernizing - the new barrels aren't better than the old design (arguably worse), the 18th century stock is probably a better design than the new crap (though synthetic materials would help with breakage at the wrist). A good percussion lock would work (though the change to a closed system over an open system of ignition might create unforseen problems), though why you'd want a rifle primer I don't know, and of course the option for optics are always nice.

Modern muzzleloaders are basically workarounds for shoddy replicas, and aren't much of an improvement over a good traditional sidelock. They are, however, much cheaper, since they don't require a bunch of skilled handwork to make correctly. Truly accurate replicas, made to original lines, can't be made on a machine.

I'm pretty sure there are as I'm certain I've read of Ferguson rifle reenactors. You can probably find reproductions for sale through Bing. I think you can get Puckle "machine-guns" so you can probably find Ferguson rifles!

From the Brass's p.o.v. they were alot more expensive than standard muskets.

Maybe worried about ammunition costs/usage and resupply as well (that also affected all armies' thinking on early era machine-guns when that became technologically doable).

But the main thing was it would have required a complete change in training and tactics that was socially unacceptable as well like having common foot soldiers and their NCOs having to think for themselves alot more that was only just starting up in the late 18th Century with the use of purposefully-assigned skirmishing troops used on the battlefield and not just in the raiding of "petite guerre". Von Steuben probably wouldn't have approved either!

And this was with British troops and even in an era when European Continental armies were using linear tactics (contrasted with columnar tactics of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars) that was alot closer to the linear loose-order tactics that would finally be adopted by the mid-19th Century with the widespread use of the rifle-muzzle-loading musket.

So costs and social issues is the short answer.

The British were actually pretty forward thinking in that regard. Myth to the contrary, they used open lines that allowed speed (they actually jogged into battle) and flexibility, taught marksmanship, and pioneered the light infantry concept as early as the 7 years war, though by the 1770s the light infantry were basically just elite line infantry. As a matter of fact, they were rather more flexible than the Continentals once Steuben introduced European-continent-type drill.

Six years ago, my Mother died of injuries from an auto accident (she was a passenger in a car driven by my brother-in-law and my sister was in the car also). My BiL is an expert driver, and was t-boned by a 1974 Ford pickup, driven by a guy with a Suspended License and no insurance.
And it was likely that he was DUI, but the local police did not investigate the accident properly at all (according to my cousin, who was a Sargent-detective show specialized in that for a city police force, and had been for years, now retired).
The accused stood trial and was given a suspended sentence for vehicular manslaughter. He could have killed all three of them, frankly. My BiL has had his knee permanently damaged from the accident. It never healed correctly

He was a suspect only because of GROSS incompetence by the FBI and the LA County Sheriff's Department.

They knew the names of four other people at the scene of the crime. But they only interviewed 1 of those 4. And they never checked their criminal records.

Turns out they were a bunch of gangbangers. But the FBI's top profiler, Mark Safarik, made the straight-arrow soldier Sergeant Ray Jennings the prime suspect.

The German jager corp were issued German rifles by their own governments, I believe. Some may have been issued m1776s later on, I'd have to check. I think, off the top of my head, most of the rifles ended up in the hands of cavalry and some provincial (i.e., loyalist) regiments. Ironically enough, about a hundred were at King's Mountain in the hands of Ferguson's Royal Americans.

I'll have to check DeWitt Bailey's book.

If I were to build a breech-loading black powder rifle, I'd consider either a break-action, like modern shotguns, or perhaps a bolt action, with a hollow bolt having an open top that could be charged with ball and powder from the top while open, and then, when closed, mesh with the receiver to become (mostly) gas-tight.

They will never bust you for a bag or a few joints of pot if you're not an asshole when they pull you over for speeding, running a light, etc. Just admit it's yours, apologize, and you're good. Also, if an "assault and battery" is two guys who are reasonably matched, basically a bar fight that someone calls the cops on, the cops will go to some lengths to try to talk both parties into just walking away, consider the matter settled. That's actually a courtesy, as an assault arrest/conviction can be a career/life-altering fuck-up, and most of the cops have been in a few scuffles themselves over the years, they know how it is.

I saw some of those at the comic book store yesterday, with my kids. I found a gorgeous copy of Neil Gaiman's Hansel and Gretel, so that will probably be a Christmas present to one of them, as well as Rebellion, which is a graphic novel of the Revolutionary war. I may go back for that one myself. Also saw a Neil Gaiman and Alice Cooper comic of the Three Temptations of Christ-which was both weird and wonderful.

I'm reading the Coming of the Third Reich, by Richard Evans, which I think may be a harbinger for now.

443 Joni Ernst has displayed some squishiness on amnesty. She's not quite a cornfed Kelly Ayotte, but her bona fides are weak.

And post-Reagan-era Iowa, having gone Democratic in five of the last six elections, is not really a plausible swing state any longer, even with a favorite daughter on the ticket. Plus, it doesn't bring many votes to the table in the electoral college.

She would have to get on the team and repudiate past remarks and actions.

She is only useful if dhe plays along and can be molded into what the campaign needs.

Whether it is worth the trouble depends on what her gender could bring.

446 Trump needs to have someone that will have his back in the trenches. All other considerations are secondary. We all know the media will try to immediately drive a wedge between Trump and his VP pick by trying to immediately make the VP pick disavow everything that he's said over the last 12 months. Trumps VP candidate will need to have balls of steel to tell the media to go f**k off and then kick their asses on the way out.

If Trump picks someone who hesitates in the slightest before the onslaught of the media, the election is over for him.

Have people not figured out that being on the fence puts you in the strongest position, with all parties trying to get you on their side? Going all right off the bat means there's no point in kissing your ass, and you can confidently expect to be taken for granted.

Someday the blacks are going to figure that out. Or not.

450 I don't think there's really a "perfect" VP pick for Trump. There are plenty of good choices, though. I like Sessions, Hunter, Cotton, and Blackburn, myself. I think it'll be one of those four, because Trump wants a VP who knows Washington politics and that he can trust to forward his agenda.

Sessions, Hunter and Blackburn have all endorsed Trump, and are fully on board with his border security agenda. Cotton has not endorsed Trump, but his lone vote against the not-really-a-treaty treaty with Iran is a big plus in his favor, as is his recent attack on Harry Reid from the Senate floor.

Cotton just might be Trump's best possible choice; he's young and brave, and conservatives really like him, which would help with that "party unity" thing.

Look, it's okay for you or anyone else here to believe that Trump is a viable candidate. We don't have to put our money where our mouths are.

But politicians, whose number-one consideration is the prosperity of their own careers, DO have to place bets.
What you think is a marvelous chance to be VP may, to a serious bettor, look like an extremely high chance of being associated with a socially unacceptable, landslide loser.

When you take away the risk-averse and the never-trumpers, the field of choice for Trump is not so big.
