About That Whole Googling 'What is the EU' the Morning After Brexit Thing
On Friday as the U.K., Europe and the wider world were coming to terms with the shock decision, the Washington Post reported: "Many Britons may not even know what they had actually voted for." This assertion - along with the mocking headline "The British are frantically Googling what the E.U. is, hours after voting to leave it" - was based on a tweet posted by Google based on information from its Trends tool, which analyzes in real time what people are searching for .The problem with using Google Trends as an indication of anything other than a relative increase or decrease over previous norms is that it doesn't give the whole picture. Yes, there may have been a big spike in searches about what happens if the U.K. leaves the EU, but compared with what? Were there hundreds of thousands of people searching Google for these answers? Millions?
It turns out the figure is likely to be less than 1,000 people, or 0.001 percent of the population.
No shots were fired and there was no man with a gun. But everyone got a good drill out of it I guess.

Professor Tyson, who may be the dumbest smart person on Twitter, yesterday wrote that what the world really needs is a new kind of virtual state - he wants to call it "Rationalia" - with a one-sentence constitution: "All policy shall be based on the weight of evidence." This schoolboy nonsense came under withering and much-deserved derision. Conservatives, who always have the French Revolution in their thoughts, reminded him that this already has been tried, and that the results are known in the history books as "the Terror." Writing with a great deal of reserve in Popular Science, Kelsey D. Atherton notes:Rationalia puts a burden on science that it cannot bear: to work, it must be immune to the passions of the day, promising an objective world and objective truth that will triumph over obstacles.
That's true enough, but it shortchanges the scientific objection to Tyson's Rationalia pipe dream, which is that it implicitly presupposes quantities and types of knowledge that are not, even in principle, available, even if the scientists in question were the dispassionate truth-seekers of Atherton's ideal.
A more plausible explanation for the non-deployment of forces can be inferred from the statement by Jordan and Pompeo (at page 44) that the State Department ate up valuable time by insisting that certain elements of the U.S. military respond to the crisis in civilian clothes and that they not use vehicles with U.S. markings. It seems that diplomacy was holding the military back.I'm told by a former senior government official who has participated in rescue discussions like the ones Team Obama had (or should have had) on Sept. 11, 2012 that it's the Secretary of State's job to secure permission from the country in question (here Libya) for our military to enter its territory. Alternatively, it is her job to decide not to obtain permission and simply act. Until the Secretary of State does one or the other, apparently the military can't proceed.
If this is true, then the most likely explanation for why the military didn't deploy, as Secretary of Defense Panetta had ordered, is that Hillary Clinton didn't obtain timely permission and didn't authorize the military to proceed without it - the obvious thing for her to have done, given that American lives were at stake.
Elementary School Call the Police After a 'Racist' Statement...About Brownies?
A couple of things to note here. First, it wasn't the teacher but another student who determined the remark about the brownie was racist. So, apparently, a 9-year-old social justice warrior prompted this overreaction (read on because there's more to it). The story tells us nothing more about this student. Was he or she a minority? What might have prompted him or her to think this was a racial remark in the first place?
...And the interrogation of a 9-year-old wasn't the end of it. Later, the police informed the family that the incident had been reported to New Jersey Division of Child Protection and Permanency. It's not clear what that organization was supposed to do but presumably they are now going to open some kind of file on this family.
Apparently there were no grown ups involved at all in this whole snarflefuck from beginning to end though there were at least two kids.
WeaponsMan Reviews Soldier of Orange (1977)
And describes it as the best resistance film made in the last half century.
It was this 1977 movie that helped launch both Paul Verhoeven and Rutger Hauer's careers in the US. It follows the paths of several Dutch students at the beginning or WWII. Some joined the resistance, some joined the Nazis, some become collaborators, and some try to stay uninvolved.
The main character, Erik, was based on the real life experiences of Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzema who managed to escape to England and then returned to help coordinate the resistance in Holland (which turned out to be heavily infiltrated by the Germans) with British forces. He eventually became a Mosquito bomber pilot with the RAF and flew 75 sorties during war including 25 over Berlin and was awarded the DFC.
After the war he led an interesting life and at various times wrote Hollywood screenplays, organized a racing team, and helped lead a CIA-backed plot to overthrow the South Moluccas Republic. He eventually settled in Hawaii and became a director of an oil and gas exploration company. He died in 2007 at the age of 90 in his home on the island of Hawaii.

Two years ago they came out with a deluxe blu-ray of "Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcia," which I *want* to see. Unfortunately Twilight Time supposedly limits their print runs to 3000 copies and all were snatched up quickly.
Can still get a copy at Amazon... for $78. But I've also heard they're going to run off another 3000 copies in August. We shall see.

The story on ABC local channel 7 this evening was about a bunch of people (what's a bunch? they did not report) turned out for the old teddy bears and candles thing for her, as if she was the victim of a Paris- or Orlando-type thing.
Denver experiences about 40 murders per year, and most get a 25-second report in the evening news. This one, because it was in daylight in a downtown office, naturally got more.

The whole pizza thing? I've done that also. But the most gluttonous I've ever been... that's a tough one. I think I'll have to say Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a yearly exercise in gluttony in my family, given my brother's turkeys. The crazy bastard marinades them in a concoction of pickling brine and spices for 3 days, then smokes 'em for 14 hours. You've never had a turkey until you've had that, and everything served along with it is at least good.

While I come hear to escape groupthink and learn from commenters much wiser and knowledgeable than myself on most subjects, the comedy is what has always set this place apart from anywhere else.
I respect the punchline and that is the obvious moneyshot, the true art, in my opinion, comes from the setup. And when you have virtual strangers purposely setting up a great joke/laugh to be knocked out of the park by another virtual stranger, that is special.
It makes me really appreciate this place and all the work everybody puts into it and shit the same people have to put up with daily.

It's not number so much as significance. I can't judge publications in his field, but if he were lighting it up with shit hot work, being black, he'd have had first tier universities sending limos to pick him up. Obviously, that didn't happen.His CV screams that he was put on a few papers by the PI and shoved out the door with a Ph.D., with the implicit understanding that he was not going to pursue a career in research.

Oh and folks, for anyone who's into classic television, I found this great blog, called "By Ken Levine." He's far less political than some other TV writers' blogs I've found. His career goes back to writing for M*A*S*H and he also wrote for Cheers and several other shows.
Levine has some great stories, and he answers questions about shows he worked on, on Fridays. One of the interesting things I learned reading him last night is that, when Friends was in production, the cast were such perfectionists about getting takes right, they would actually tape *all afternoon* on Fridays, and do so in front of *two* live audiences: an early afternoon audience, and then switch them out for a late afternoon audience. To date they're the only show that's ever been able to get away with that.

I do not not know if it is the rarest thing I own, but this is the oddest of how I got it:
I am 17 or 18 working at McDonalds (first job.) I am working at the back drive thru window. A guy from school (same class, but I never had classes with the dude, we had been in elementary school together) rolls up and he orders some food. One of the coins he hands me is a silver half dollar. I do not get a chance to look at it much, but I ask him if he is sure he wants to pay with it, as it i probably worth more than $.50. He says yes. As soon as I ring him out, I take 50c from my pocket and exchange the coin and then look at it later.
It is a 1925 silver half dollar. It is a civil war Stone Mountain commerative coin. Here is the wiki:

It is customary for grad students getting their doctorates to semi-jocularly rather officiously call each other "doctor" as they get used to the title they spent five or so years earning.

That's similar to the story of how I got my Morgan Dollar. It was when I was working in the Gas Station From Hell while putting myself through college. Some customer in their mid-twenties, scraggly looking chick I'd never seen it before plunks it down while buying beer. I pick it up, and my eyes go wide. "Do you know what this is?", I said with a bit of a "wow" tone.
She snidely goes "Yeah, it's a dollar!"

I thought I was going to have the same experience as you today. Was cleaning up my smoker preparing to smoke two racks of St. Louis style ribs when it started sprinkling. Fortunately the weather passed us by and I was able to successfully get the ribs done. The smoker depends on an electrical connection, probably not good if it's raining.

No, it wasn't me either. I looked at his CV and, having been around the track a few times, saw a fail-to-launch grad student who received a terminal Ph.D. degree and was shoved out the door.Few civilians realize that once someone is in grad school, and passes his qualifying (oral) exams, usually in his second year, he's pretty much a lock to get a Ph.D. unless he pulls his own rip cord.Neither the PI nor the doctoral committee wants to burn someone who at that point has spent four or five years in grad school. It's bad for morale, and for grad student recruitment. So they grant him the Ph.D., with the tacit understanding that the PI won't support him for a serious academic position, but will gently steer him into something he can't fuck up.

Have you ever looked into the basis for the "nuclear winter" horseshit? It was based entirely upon guessing a whole series of parameters, with zero empirical input. And hence ripe for political demagoguery, which is exactly what happened.

I have one of the later Morgan's (1921) that my mom gave me several years ago. I have never been into the coin thing, but I like history, so I like to keep them.
The 1921 is in pretty decent looking shape considering I have never had it cleaned or stored properly. I also have a 1934 dollar that looks in much worse shape.
Another story. My grandfather was a tank driver in World War II. He carried a silver certificate around with him all through war, planning on throwing it at the feet of the statue of liberty when he came home. They came back a different way, so he kept the bill. He had a portrait of himself in uniform and put the certificate in the portrait frame. It is hanging in my parents basement.

Cato, a lot of the Morgans you find in the coinshops have been 'Sweated"
- that means they have been worn down, possibly to shave off some of
the silver. A lot of them look like someone has gone over them with
emery or chamois.
Anyhow, the last thing to get worn of is the "liberty" in the headband.

I don't know whether we've ever had a meal that was totally gluttonous....we've had four that were noteworthy for being indulgent. One was a tasting at Charles Nob Hill in San Francisco shortly after its chef, Ron Siegel, had stomped French Chef Sakai in Iron Chef 'battle lobster'. We were originally supposed to have dinner for about 2 hours and see a production of Bertolt Brecht's "The Threepenny Opera" [which we still have not seen]. We were still eating when the opera ended.
A second was at the Culinary Institute of America's Greystone restaurant in the Napa Valley. We thought we'd just have dinner there, and were looking through the menu. The waiter asked if we had any questions, and we opined that it was odd that there wasn't a tasting menu....he looked thoughtful and said, "hold on"....and was back in a minute to announce that there was and name a price. We agreed, I got a wine pairing, and we then journeyed to Culinary Fantasyland....we were served delectibles for nearly five straight hours.
Evidently, the word got out that any aspiring chef who had missed a session in the current quarter could do a make-up if it passed the master chefs' inspection and they sent it to table 19. I took notes, and by the time we got to desserts it was just crazy. People were staring at us from other tables as we got piles of little bite-sized wonderfuls from the kitchen.
Our third experience was at a local Michelin 2-star -- Manresa (they got a 3rd star shortly thereafter). Again, a tasting menu....and the beginning of a lasting relationship with the source of their produce -- Love Apple Farms. It's sad -- we could obviously go back there any time we wanted and I'm sure we'd have a wonderful time.....but.....Silicon Valley pricing. Still, a very special experience.
Our fourth, and most recent off-the-wall dining experience was at Emeril's Delmonico restaurant in the basement of the Venetian in Las Vegas. I know you're thinking "ugh, celebrity chef". I know you're thinking, "he's got two restaurants in that resort, alone." I know you're thinking, "wait a second, Emeril works out of New Orleans....."
....but this one was the awesomesauce. The "Kitchen Table" is beyond a tasting menu -- they actually have a large table built into a bubble in their kitchen, and all the meals for the main dining-room go out through the hallway on your right. Thoughout our meal, the Executive Chef, his Sous-Chef, the Sommelier, Head Server....everyone dropped in and said "howdy". I was kind of sad that we missed the actual line cooks -- they probably didn't figure we could speak Spanish.
And the food, OMG....one dish was fish (halibut?) over a succotash.....I nearly cried because I can never cook fish 1/100 as well. The next dish was, as the chef put it, their version of "pork and beans"......turns out, the restaurant's order from the butcher for "ribs" is a little longer than what they serve to their regular clientele, so they end up with a little "leftover" -- that they secretly smoke for staff-only bacon (and the beans were some heirloom you won't find in Kroger). We've been a few places and done a few things, but that was something special that we'll always remember fondly.
Each experience took hours, was well-into 3 figures of $$$, and involved numerous indulgences. But not gluttonous....

I did that in college, with a teammate from the baseball team. We worked out for three hours, lifting weights, running, and swimming, then hit an all-you-can-eat place around 8 pm, famished.
They had roast beef, which I love. Nine plates later, the manager came over and kicked me out.

I dunno about the scale being larger than any nuclear exchange, especially one say during the 1980's. On the other hand, I guess they were blowing particles for a lot longer than any explosion would.
Doesn't fallout also depend largely on how high the nuke is detonated above the ground? The lower it is, the more material sucked up?

Well, I have some gasoline gensets. The storm killed my power about 3:30 PM. I went out and shut the garage door, because the south wind was driving the rain right inside. Then I went to town, and had a couple of beers at the hotel, and watched the heavy-duty weather warnings on the TV there. And then got my mail at the P.O., and went home. Rain had stopped, power still out. Cooked some hot dogs on the grill, and then did some mowing with the riding mower, as the grass wasn't too wet. Had a nap. Woke up, and the power was restored.

Also, as a side note, this same Ken Levine was a Seattle Mariners color commentator on radio from 1992-95. It was a childhood dream of his and when Seattle offered, he jumped at the chance. He got to work with one of the hands-down best baseball announcers ever, the late, great Dave Niehaus as well as getting to watch Ken Griffey Jr. at the plate and in the field and Randy Johnson pitch for good measure.
He also came back for a couple of seasons in 2011 when the Mariners were scrambling for familiar voices in the booth after the sudden death of Niehaus in 2010.

In other news - it's gonna be another scorcher here in Austin.
It looks like a pretty nice weekend here on the MA north shore; sunshine throughout, though high humidity and thunderstorms today which will clear out for tomorrow, Sunday and Monday. Now if only I could get out of work early, it would be a perfect day, but I don't think that's going to happen.

Speaking of other news, does anybody know how to send an art tip to CBD? I came across the artist Jeffrey Larson when I was cruising the American Digest website.
Here's a sample of his work; his bio says he was "trained in the manner of the Old Masters at the prestigious Atelier Lack, a studio / school whose traditions and training methods reach back through Impressionism and the 19th century's French academies."

Out of respect for ace I will leave my opinion of kevin williamson unsaid. If he managed to write something "good" for once, it is just the broken clock principle at work.

I agree that the Williamson article about poor white communities was reprehensible. But the one linked in the post about NdGT is a grand slam into the upper deck.
