Staff Sergeant David Johnathan Thostaer RIP. [CBD]

Doolittle Raid funeral.jpg

From the Daily Mail....

Lieutenant Colonel Dick Cole, center, salutes his final comrade of the Doolittle bombing mission Staff Sergeant David Thostaer, gunner-engineer aboard the Ruptured Duck which crash landed off the coast of China.

These men were giants, and will be forgotten only if we forget them. They deserve to live forever in our hearts and minds....

[Hat Tip: some guy named DrewM]

1 With all the giant balls on those planes, I'm surprised they actually took flight.

RIP and Godspeed.

2 Has DrewM officially gone on to other things?

Nobody could piss of Hector like Drew.

Every year, there are less and less of these guys at Memorial Day events with the VFW or Legion. This year, there may be none left.

4 Another giant. Those guys never expected to survive that flight and some of them didn't. Although militarily that raid didn't accomplish much other than make Japan dedicate more of their military to home defense, but it sure as hell meant a lot to the Morale at home which was at its nadir then.

RIP Sargent.

Shocked the shit out of the Japs, whose country had not been attacked in over 400 years. Until then.

If you really want to be pissed off, go to a VA nursing home and see how they treat WWII vets (and all vets, really).

A gaggle of nurses clucking around the registration desk doing absolutely nothing while the men choke to death on their own secretions because the bitches are too lazy to get them out of bed and the "ethics" committees decide that it's "for the best" anyway.

Meanwhile, the younger vets sit in their rooms with nothing at all to do because the pool has been turned into a storage area and the common area has about 12 books and a pack of cards.

Fuck you, Murfreesboro VA. Fuck. You.

20 In 2014 a good friend of mine (a former F-105 crew chief during his all-expensed paid vacation tour in Thailand) and I went to the Eisenhower Museum in Abilene Kansas.

Richard Cole was one of three speaker on his subsequent unit the 1st Air Commandoes (the US Burma campaign air support and transport air unit) to a special teacher's night at the Museum. He was lucid, grave, and funny, and had driven from Florida for the talk.
He flew off the USS Hornet, crashed in China, and finally ended up in Calcutta. There he flew 300 plus missions over the Hump, which defied the odds of survival just there. Then he joined the Air Commando Group and flew in Burma. His unit supported and protected the Chindits.

He had a deep well of funny stories about the unit, his commander Col. Philip Cochran, and even Lord Louis Mountbatten.

My friend and I asked good, tough questions on military topics like logistics, maintenance and discipline. The teachers all asked "How did you feel when -.:"

He is a class act.
I'd follow him into combat.

24 My great uncle Roy didn't take part in the Doolittle Raid... but he did bomb the hell out of Okinawa in his B-24. He never talked about his service until my husband was TDY there. He sent my husband a long email and one of the lines I remember from it was, "They were thinking, boy, we're glad we're not up there being shot at and we were flying over the ships dropping
our
bombs on the Japs, thinking, boy, we're glad we're not down there."

He slipped the surly bonds of earth and touched the face of God in 2012.

27 Sorry Country Singer.

My grandpa didn't have much luck with their ER either. After he'd get aspiration pneumonia (again) they'd send him over to the hospital side to be neglected.

Once he ended up at Vanderbilt's VA where the nice young doctor encouraged a DNR, despite the fact the only thing my grandpa was dying from was neglect.

I don't think he expected me to have such command of futile care law.

Anyway sorry. I just get so angry knowing that these men likely face a similar fate after all they did for our country.

Far from paradise, but nothing like that.

My observation is that the VA system is like the NHS in Britain. Some hospitals/centers are quite good, most are mediocre, and a lot are awful.

I can understand the mediocrity. It's government run.
But how can you explain the awful stuff?

=====One of the saddest things I have seen in the past 20 years is the loss of the old service clubs -- the Oddfellows, Masons, Elks, KofC, Moose, Lions, and all the others. One of the missions of these groups was to coordinate visitors and 'stuff' for the VA hospital residents. No matter how good medical care is, there is no substitute for books, letters, pajamas, shaving supplies, and most of all, visitors. There is no substitute for the backup eyes watching.

48 I just returned from New Orleans, home of the WWII Museum. It's been a long time since I've witnessed such a large group of people act in such a reverent manner. Many people, young and old, would fall out of line during the self-directed tour, only to be comforted by family, strangers, and (in my mind) the best volunteer staff I have seen work such a large venue. Even my kids, only marginally interested in anything historic, were amazed at the sacrifices made on our behalf.

If you haven't been, go. NOLA is in many ways a cesspool of both personal and governmental failure. This museum, however, more than makes up for that. Voted the #3 museum in the nation by Travelocity. Every bit as good as any of the Smithsonian's in DC. Walking distance from the River Walk, safe, and well lit. The Green line streetcar travels within 3 blocks of the entrance (which is poorly marked).

May God bless those who did what the rest of us could not - or would not - do to secure the future we now enjoy.

My mom, God bless her, tried to be the one woman entertainment coordinator. She came down with a ton of games and books from my uncle. She also tried to bribe the nurses with candy in my grandpa's room so they'd have to see him, at the very least.

I agree though, lots of friendly visitors would have kept the much more honest.

90 Have letter written by my Uncle Bob to his brother (my Pop) from Camp Atterbury at the end of Oct 1944. Orders for Europe. Regular stuff from one brother to another abt being scared but would try to be a good soldier. Was in the quiet sector in the Ardennes for newly deployed units when it was overrun. POW by end of Dec. He was also at the meet-up at the Elbe. With the Russians. They'd liberated his POW camp. Used to have several 'letters' he wrote Grandma on that tissue paper crap at the camp. He passed a couple of yrs ago at 96. Great guy.

Misty Plowright, a transgender woman, claimed the Democratic nomination in Colorado's conservative 5th House District on Tuesday. And back in 2000, Karen Kerin ran as a Republican against then-Rep. 134 These giants are leaving us in droves. In January '93 I was honored to give a eulogy to a friend that outranked me by decades. He was 93 years old when he died and fairly isolated from his family. He had served almost his entire 5 year military career at Lowry Field in Denver and had the unique experience of developing the training program that saw every one of the 8,000 pilots of the brand new B-29 Super Fortress participate in.

He had joined the US Army Air Corp prior to the war by enrolling in the "Six Month Enlistment Program" and never raised above Staff Sergeant but he pulled rank on officers above because of his unique role. He always regretted not seeing 'action' but it was because the military identified his unique abilities and used him in the best way possible.

He was a craftsman. He took the cockpit controls of a wrecked B-29 and crafted a training station. He then got a B-24 Liberator and installed several rows of two fully functioning B-29 Pilot/Co-pilot stations connected to control that four engine plain (the only other such animal like the B-29). He ended up building 124 of them.

I discovered during my research of this wonderful man's life he had decided to make a career change at the same age I was when I gave his eulogy. At 55 years old he opened Barne's Thunderbird Shop and restored 'birds from all over the world (he had a couple very loyal customers in Venezuela btw). He was a certified Ford Factory Technician by virtue of his excellent attention to detail.

Almost no one of his hundreds of friends knew of his wartime experience. He showed me many pictures, some probably classified of his time at Lowry. Truly a humble and heroic man that is missed by many.

RIP Jack Arnold Barnes

It's like the French pride in their military prowess (stop laughing), the glory of France, how red pantaloons were the essence of the French Army (early in WWI), and how cran would carry the day against the Germans and provide revanche for the Franco-Prussian War.

Unfortunately, nobody remembered to tell the Germans about this, and they kicked the Frogs' butts. Again.

At some point, you have to say, "We're fucked up. We've got to do something different, and get our act together, because what we've doing ain't makin' it." See, e.g., the US armed forces after Vietnam.

Either it was about what hospital Hillary was going to be admitted to or which aide was going to be sacrificed.

If there was going to be a coup Lynch would helped Bill suicide and his body would be in a National Park.

162 @33: "
Ironic the generation that saved America and the world gave birth to the generation that destroyed America."

Unfortunately, the generation that saved America also enthusiastically supported FDR and all of his destructive policies, and they supported (and were the establishment at the time of) LBJ and all of his destructive policies, too. They were brave in the face of foreign threats, but domestically, they were a mixed bag, at best.

Heads will roll. It doesn't help what has already happened but may prevent someone else from having to go through this. Our nursing home/hospice is awesome with a staff that truly loves our veterans and goes out of their way at every opportunity to provide them with the best of care. They have routine pet therapy visits, bingo nights, casino night, special outings to local ballgames, arts/crafts, etc.

I just learned that one of our nursing home vets is a survivor of the Bataan Death March. There are no words.

Did you know Michelle flunked the Illinois bar exam, while an associate at Sidley & Austin, yet was allowed to keep her job anyway (at least for a few years). Did you know that Michelle was eventually taken aside and told that the firm "was not the right fit" for her (i.e., lawyer-speak for "you're fired"), despite her special "mentor" (who was a partner), and that she never held any other job practicing law?

Did you know that every job Michelle had after Sidley & Austin was a political patronage, make-work, non-lawyer job that she was given because of who she was married to?

Did you know that the last job Michelle had in Chicago paid her over $300k a year, and yet didn't even bother to hire anyone to replace Michelle after she left?

So , you have someone running on the Democrat ticket in Utah who is using a fake name, was born a man, but is posing as a woman, is obviously mentally ill and currently is polling in the 37% range in the state.

Her platform is a retread of Bernie's including free college, legal marijuana, paid family leave, $15 minimum wage, etc. She's a cashier at a grocery and didn't go to college because of the cost and she didn't know what career she wanted.

But she is going to represent Utah now as a career path.

She beat a conservative Democrat Mormon who was a marriage therapist. The reason given was that her opponent wanted more restrictions on abortions.

This is what a state like Utah now produces as Democrat candidates.

198 One thing that has pleased me about our move from the VA suburbs of DC to the Denver area is how much more quietly respectful and/or patriotic many organizations are. (No, not all, this is a blue-ing state with a lot of immigrants and a Dem governor.) But the eldest daughter is very involved in 4-H and they say the pledge at every meeting and event, I became a member of Toastmasters and they say the pledge and have an invocation before every meeting. Heck, we've gone to the Stock Show and many of the events there will have a prayer beforehand. Public events in the DC area still honor the military, but not so much the country, and especially not the xtian g-o-d.

Don't get me started about the Hampton Memory Care and Assisted Living Facility in Salmon Creek, Washington, though. They fucked up my Dad's meds inFebruary, which turned him violent and unmanageable, such that he had to be transferred for three months to a gerosych ward in Auburn, WA. And of course those assholes drugged him into a coma when Medicaid decided they weren't paying anymore, which eventually led to him dying of kidney failure in the second assisted living facility we had to put him into on short notice.
And of course the owner of the Hampton had the nerve to show up at Dad's funeral last week.
