19 They had such a grasp of light, those Dutchmen......
On my best days, with all my fancy lenses and lighting and using my most refined developing techniques, I can approach a result that they'd consider amateurish. Just gorgeous. Posted by: Your Decidedly Devious Uncle Palpatine, Still Accepting Harem Applicants at June 30, 2016 09:48 AM (9PXtR) I think I like his light and shadow better because it is more understated. One of the thing that always strikes me is that we are viewing a lot of these paintings from the perspective of modern lighting. The incandescent bulb changes a lot of how we view things. I have heard people complain that a painter's interior scenes are too dark or that the figures look odd. Well, lamps and candles give completely different types of lighting than the modern bulb. It has a tendency to distance you from the people and scenes being painted. Vermeer looks like he was painting in an extraordinarily well lit house (with natural light.) It gives a kind of reality and accessibility to his work that is amazing. I love this stuff. One of the reasons that I love seeing color footage of say world war II or WWI is that it lends the air of reality. The "Damn, these people and places were REAL." in a way that just reading about them never can. Posted by: Sandra Fluke's Gynecologist at June 30, 2016 09:57 AM (3ZoRf) 50

There seems to be some indication that the "active shooter" at JBA is a false alarm, or at least a case of someone not getting the word that JBA was running an "active shooter" drill this morning.
Same thing happened at my workplace a few months ago: two weeks of notifications that there was going to be a drill, and someone didn't get the word and called 911, resulting in an actual "lock down, cower-in-place" order until it all got sorted out. So we have Labour releasing a report on anti-Semitism in the party to the accompaniment of an apparent Jewbash. Corbyn apparently being isolated by a small coterie of hard-left MPs lest someone talk him into resignation. Gove decides Boris is squishy and pulls the plug on his PM ambitions, jumps into the leadership race himself despite years of Shermanesque 'if nominated I will not run, if elected I will not serve' sort of statements. With Boris out that mostly leaves the Leavers split between Gove and Leadsom, with Theresa May as the establishment candidate. Tory PMs will pick top two candidates, then the Tory voters pick from those. Posted by: JEM at June 30, 2016 10:34 AM (o+SC1) 208

Carrie Christianson, who started the Facebook boycott page, told THR that vegans have a right to be angry at the restaurant owners, "because veganism is a belief system." "You are patronizing a restaurant that you think has that philosophy, and it turns out it doesn't," she told the outlet. "Vegans should know that this restaurant has a farm that slaughters animals." Also interesting Question #56 asks what is your first reaction post Orlando: a. I need to get a gun b. We need more gun control c. Neither Overall a wins 40% to 33%. So the same group that wants more guns by 7% is also going to vote for Hillary - who wants to ban all guns - by 6%? This tells me either the poll is fucked. Or a lot of people don't know Hillary's position on guns. Trump needs to start reminding them. And this is the type of analysis that I'm afraid Trump will never do. In our daily Judicial Watch watch -- I bobbed around in the Huma transcript. Finding her actual testimony is like geiger-countering for coins at the beach, since the majority of the transcript is one of 9 lawyers (6 for the defendant and 3 for the witness) objecting to JW's questions. In the end, she doesn't remember any discussion about anything or she's so so so so sorry that it just didn't occur to any of them to turn those records over .... but if she had it to do over again, she so so so so would (girlish smile implied). The last of the scheduled witnesses, Patrick Kennedy, was deposed yesterday. He seems like an entirely different animal in his duties, and he's not covered by that team of lawyers shared by Mills, Sullivan, Abedin, and Reines. Hillary could still be subpoenaed, but I'm sure Judicial Watch could just out all her answers in advance to save time. "Let's just run down all the things you don't remember and you just say Yes as we recite them...... Okay, now let's run down all the things you did out of benign negligence..... Okay, now let's run down all the things you overlooked in your haste because the world was about to go up in flames thanks to the way George Bush had left it and you, Hillary Clinton, hadn't a moment to lose in applying your wisdom and experience to these urgent problems....." Actually reading up on the 22nd Amendment, Wikipedia, so grain of salt, but Woodrow Wilson tried to run for President in 1920 and 1924, then sabotaged the Dem candidate. Wasn't he kind of out of his gourd by that point--realizing that's a feature, not a bug for the progs.

Saw "Range 15" last night and it was all kinds of politically incorrect, triggering awesome.
Great to see it in a theater full of young vets (son included). However, there's a whole lot of f-bombs, sexual situations, and of course, zombie killin'. Ross Patterson directed and had a role that was hilarious. Lots of insidery mil stuff. Audience howled over a gag about PT belts and challenge coins, oh, and the oblig Air Force dig. William Shattner, Sean Astin, Marcus Luttrell, and several Medal of Honor recipients were in it. Mat Best is the hilarious lead. It is NOT for kids (or even teens), and I was probably the only mom in the theater (seated between husband and son), and there were many times I was squirming with embarrassment over some of the scenes (due to being seated next to son). The film wasn't on the marque, and you have to go on-line to find where it's playing. Husband contributed $ to the production, so his name is in the long list of donors (one of whom called himself "Don hates Obama"). Anyhow, I think most morons would love it. Just watched the trailer, Jane. Looks like a lot of fun. Posted by: Lauren at June 30, 2016 11:46 AM (Dxa+Y)[i/] It was fun. Husband bought tickets for his vet employees. Son had already seen the premiere, but he and his buddies wanted to see it again. It's important to see the piece after the credits. It goes into the making of the film, and the backgrounds of the vets. It gets serious about how many come home, don't have their brothers around, and feel isolated. As one young guy said, "Hardly anyone in this country even knows a vet." They had extras coming from as far away as Alaska to play zombies. Lots of them are amputees. And, as one of the vet actors said, "Probably the only ones who will get this film and appreciate it, are vets. So it's our film. If other people don't like it, they can f**k off." Alrighty, then. This painting made me think of the French actress Natalie Beys (I think that's her name) who was in the movie "The Return of Martin Guerre." Some actors really can't pull off playing medieval or Renaissance characters - they look too modern. Beys is beautiful and yet she looked very authentically pre-modern French peasant in the film, wearing a headdress or turban or whatever the hell it is much like the woman in this painting.
If you put her into a time machine and sent her back to 1533, the one visual thing that might give her away would be her teeth. Nobody had pearly white actors teeth in 1533. Posted by: Donna and V. (sans ampersands at the present time) at June 30, 2016 11:52 AM (u0lmX) 394

You just can't write this election off despite the "experts" on both sides already announcing the results.
The only way I'll really believe we can tell what is going to happen from the polls is if ALL of them have say Trump down 8-10 points a few weeks before the election. If it's in that 5 point range it will be a jump ball to the very end. Also, I'm sure this is overly optimistic, I tend to thing "undecided" voters are Trump voters that are too scared to say to a pollster they support Donald Trump. I expect that group to swing heavily against the status quo of Hillary. Posted by: Maritime at June 30, 2016 12:22 PM (8SBq4) 474

I saw a speech that the guy who put those records into the CT database in the first place made at the National Press Club about those records being deleted.
There is some significant BS going on with this one. When San Benadino happened, this guy was able to piece together ties back to a Muslim Brotherhood ongoing recruitment operation through mosques. He did the same thing with the Mateen in Orlando. And he was able to do it with public records. Bottom line is there is an underground effort being funded to build radicalism and support for Sharia within the US web of mosques, and there are people inside the administration that are actively covering it up.
