Daughters of Odessa.jpg

Daughters Of Odessa (Martyrs of Modernism)
Frederick Hart

From the linked article by Tom Wolfe about the artist:

The hot-blooded boy's passion, as Hart developed his vision of the Creation, could not be consummated by Woman alone. He fell in love with God. For Hart, the process began with his at first purely pragmatic research into the biblical story of the Creation in the Book of Genesis. He had been baptized in the Presbyterian Church, and he was working for the Episcopal Church at the Washington National Cathedral. But by the 1970's, neither of these proper, old-line, in-town Protestant faiths offered the strong wine a boy who was in love with God was looking for. He became a Roman Catholic and began to regard his talent as a charisma, a gift from God. He dedicated his work to the idealization of possibilities God offered man.

Addendum: OregonMuse has provided additional information about this work.

From an interview with Hart:

I'm a big fan of Russian history, and originally that started as a small sketch of the four daughters of Nicholas who were murdered. And then it turned into a larger allegorical work, as a tribute to all of the innocent victims off the 20th Century. It's meant to speak to all of the things -- I even called it Martyrs of Modernism as a subtitle. What I'm talking about, of course, is the deliberate destruction of things that are lovely, beautiful and filled with life, as personified by all of the brutality of the 20th Century.

And I picked Odessa simply because of all of the horrible things that happened in the 20th Century most of them got a dress rehearsal in the Ukraine somewhere along the way, whether it was the Pogroms or the suppression of the rebellion of 1905, or the actual revolution, the Stalinization, the collectivization of the peasants, the famines, the holocaust, the Nazi invasion, Chernobyl, all of the most dreadful things of the 20th Century were sort of played out in the Ukraine, so by making a tribute to all of the innocent victims of the 20th Century, I thought Odessa was kind of a nice poetic reference.

When I was at the patent office I came across Hart's design patent for the "The Creation" at The National Cathedral.

We seldom get to see true works of art in those design files.

ISTR Hart was able to get some money off of a Hollywood studio ripping off his artwork.

36 Hart subtitled this work 'Martyrs of Modernism' and I hate this sort of crap revisionism:

At first inspired by the tragic deaths of the four Romanov daughters, "Daughters of Odessa" is an overall homage to the children who lost their lives throughout the catastrophes of the twentieth century - the Ukraine being the site of many, including the First World War, the Nazi invasion and Stalinist oppression. The sculptures depict four girls in diaphanous gowns with their eyes partly closed and arms outstretched, as if heeding a far away call.

See, "tragic deaths of the Romanov daughters" should read "butchered by the Bolsheviks" and that's specifically what Hart had in mind. But of course, it is forbidden to talk about commie atrocities stand-alone, as is permitted with Nazi atrocities. The commies always get to be bundled in with a bunch of other stuff to disguise the extent of their bloodthirsty massacres.

Hey, OM, I've got a book suggestion for Sunday - Apostle, or Bones That Shine Like Fire: Travels Among the Tombs of the Twelve by Tom Bissell. He's a travel writer who spent three or so years visiting the shrines of all twelve apostles, beginning with "Hakeldama," the field where Judas supposedly committed suicide. I'm only on the second chapter, but it's a very entertaining book.

So the question becomes how is this Q poll different than the ABC polls showing the beast with a double digit lead?

Answer: the internals

The Q polls internals is 1/3 Rep, 1/3 Dem, 1/3 Indie, which is more or less the actual composition of the electorate. The ABC poll (and all MSM polls) usually have it 40/30/30 Dem/Rep/Ind.

171 "Will the EU slap a Cuba-style embargo on GB?"

The not especially stable EU banking sector would be ill served by a severing of relations with the City.

That said, the last day has been funny as hell watching Nicola Sturgeon get slapped repeatedly across the face with a metaphorical sturgeon by the likes of France and Spain, as she tries to weasel Scotland out the back door of the departing UK and into the EU.

Donald Tusk of Poland, who currently chairs the European Council, contemptuously refused to even see her when she came calling.

The EU have sized up the Scots for what they are, a bunch of deadbeats reliant on North Sea oil that's running out fast. Accession of another country which will immediately join the ranks of the bankrupt PIIGS? Not in the cards, Nicola.

The PIIGS problems are not solved and will not be any time soon. What the EU need are countries that are financially solvent to be joining up. And no one is standing in that queue.

Britain should turn that around right quick.

>>Hillary Clinton lied when she said there was "no classified material" on her illicit server -- in the order of more than 2,000 classified emails and 22 "Top Secret" emails containing some of the nation's most sensitive intelligence.

>>Her secret server was a foreign hacker's dream, exposing classified material, jeopardizing our national security, and endangering lives all so she could shield HER SECRETS from public scrutiny.

>>Her reckless conduct and dishonest attempts to avoid accountability show she cannot be trusted in the White House.

201 I think that destruction carried into the 21st Century. Especially in our country.

As we watch a party intent on destroying the social mores, laws and habits which have made us "exceptional", we watch the beauty beat out of our society by people who not interested in democratic, creative and existentially beneficial endeavors.

Murdering millions of children through abortion, coercing or forcing or society to comply with their dictates, watching the rise of a lawless administrative state that rivals the Soviet Union, destroying institutions like our judiciary by placing unelected people largely concerned with ideology, not justice, and the punishment of success through confiscatory taxation have all become clarion calls of these new-age communists who seek to enslave and destroy us under false flags like "equality", "justice" and "righteousness".

Nothing could be further from the truth. It is ultimately the genocide of our society undertaken by despicable, would be dictators, despots and fools who are corrupt and act under the guise of democracy.

There are enough tiny to small towns and unincorporated county areas that you can and will be left alone.

He had been openly blogging about it for years from the public library in Moab, UT.

If you place your hope in the vain and transient things of the world, yes, you will surely be disappointed. Sooner or later. (Put not your trust in princes ....and all of that.)

If you place your hope in transcendent things --- Truth, Goodness, Beauty--- that is a different story.

To my fellow Christians who have expressed dismay at the current way of things, I've said the same thing over and over: We should not get caught up placing our hope in the ways of this world. Secular leaders will never create the utopia they hope for. It is, as the writer of Ecclesiastes said, like chasing the wind.

But our hopes lie elsewhere. Because of that, Christians through the ages have been able to praise God while in chains, in the midst of starvation, and on their way to the gallows. We in the west have grown soft because we haven't faced the kind of life threatening persecution our forebears did. Still, we would be wise to learn from them.

Take of that what you can.

305 "But Hillary does really well with blacks."

Black primary voters.

There's a reliable core in the black vote who always show up for any Democratic frontrunner from the primaries onward. There is a large diffuse cloud of occasional black voters surrounding that core, who may or may not show up in primaries or for the general.

Obama had damn near every black voter in the country show up for the general election both times. (Including a lot of illegal multiple voting.) He pulled the core vote and the cloud vote.

Contrast this to John Kerry in '04. Kerry's rich nitwit wife said some stuff that was not well received in the black community (e.g., that she too, a white woman born in Mozambique, was "an African-American").

The reliable core of black voters showed up and voted Democratic in the general election anyway. The unreliable gas cloud of occasional black voters stayed home. Kerry lost. (Recall that 50K votes the other way in Ohio would have meant President Lurch. Bush as an incumbent was just that weak.)

It's interesting to see Amish and English (as they call us) mixing together in the small cities that dot the area, and then driving through a section where it's all Amish farms, and it's wide open and feels free.

There was a city-wide garage sale this past weekend that Mr. BTEG and I checked out. Also driving around were two different vans of Amish, with a trailer hooked on the back of each van. I guess they stretch their money by paying someone to drive them, and checking out these sales.

342 Two lessons I learned from cancer: 1. You have a lot more control over your own life than you realize, and a lot less control over anything else. Toward the end of chemo when I was weak and bled easily, I used to concentrate all my strength on not bleeding whenever I had IV's or blood draws or whatever. Such a tiny thing, but it helped me feel less like a victim.

Lesson 2: Happy is more fun than sad. Sad is more fun than dead.

Does that make me sound gloomy? I'm not. I wake up every morning with a goofy smile at having another day. Colors, smells, tastes, people saying funny things. . . . this place is a daily blessing.

372 Re: the Amish being driven..

Mennonites, who have a similar dress code to the Amish, are more open to owning cars, being driven, etc. Often the two are confused by the clothing and beards.

Old Order Amish will sometimes pay to be driven IF the local elders have approved and it is for emergency visits or health care.

A friend of ours drove a semi hauling logs that had been timbered out of farms, many of them Amish. His wife often drove old order Amish women and children to doctors appointments because as we know, there are no longer small town single practice doctors available. If you live 30 miles from the nearest town with a medical practice, and have a child with a serious disease, you have to be able to go for treatment and a horse and buggy aren't going to do 60 miles in one day.

By the way, medical practices and hospitals that treat the Amish discount it heavily because they get paid directly by the patient or the community. The Amish example of community health care is the basis of the several Christian health care sharing plans that are out there.

379 Turnout, turnout, turnout.

The key variable in this election will be turnout, and it's highly likely that turnout won't track the turnout patterns of 2008 and 2012. Both Hillary and Trump have unprecedented negatives, for example, which will affect turnout but it's not clear how.

None of the polls know how to model this accurately, so they're all inherently flawed. The RCP average is just an average of flawed polls.

News outlets like ABC, NBC and WaPo commissioned flawed polls by implicitly assuming high D turnout. This was done on purpose, to generate headline ledes to show Hillary crushing Trump. The Q poll shows a dead heat by using more balanced turnout, but it may not be correct either.

Sorry, Dave in Fl. Analysis rooted in past cycles doesn't work here the way that you think it does.

"But Hillary does really well with blacks. I have no fucking idea why, but she does. In SC he wiped the floor with Bernie and it was because she got ridiculous numbers of black votes. Almost 90%."

Because Bernie is a crazy Jew from a Snow State. Blacks don't like Jews. It's Urban Politics 101. So few Blacks who bothered to vote went for Bernie.

This doesn't mean that Black Men who voted for Obama will get off their asses to vote for the White Witch. You have to make a guess as to their turnout. You know it'll be lower than in 2008 and 2012, but by how much?

Maybe I don't make this point enough, but I agree with this.

The polls can only tell us so much, and I try hard to not read more into them than they can tell us. They are only reflective of the current opinions of the sample that was polled, and they assume the respondents are truthful, or that the participation rate is reflective of the population.

There are a lot of things that can change things, including a turn out that is not reflective of historic norms.

But I am also wary of wishing the polls to be wrong in the favor of my preferred outcome. That happened in 2012 (to my great embarrassment), and was mostly driven by Rasmussen and Gallup showing a higher GOP turnout than normal, which did not show up on election day.

Six billion dollars missing from DoS? Golly, I just have no idea! You don't know how hard it is to manage a big budget!

E-mail? I don't understand it. Wipe---like with a cloth? Golly. This technical stuff is too hard for me! Geepers, I didn't know that stuff marked Top Secret was secret.

Many, many years.

The dispensaries around here price on a curve depending on the grade of the weed but the lowest is about $200 an ounce and scales up to about $350.

420 OT.

The following link is to the story of Miranda Eve, a 3 year old who died sometime in the 1870's in San Francisco, and whose coffin was discovered when a homeowner decided to remodel her townhouse. Workers digging up the garage floor hit an object and it turned out to be a casket holding the perfectly preserved body of a three year old child.

The story of what to do with the casket and body follows and shows the kindness and love that still exists in this world.

421 But I am also wary of wishing the polls to be wrong in the favor of my preferred outcome. That happened in 2012 (to my great embarrassment), and was mostly driven by Rasmussen and Gallup showing a higher GOP turnout than normal, which did not show up on election day.

I remember trusting those who kept saying "don't trust the polls" in 2012.

Yeah.

I do think the great unpredictable factor now is the realignment that certainly appears to be real at this point.

I also think it is a logical guess that the movement is so far much greater on the right than it will be on the left. In other words, Trump has probably alienated pretty much everybody he's capable of alienating already. Hillory? She has been as much as possible, kept from the public eye, which is an extraordinary thing to do in a Presidential election.

I do expect her negatives to come roaring forth... IF she is made to be exposed to the public. Which, who knows, maybe she won't. They managed to keep from the public the fact that FDR (and JFK) were cripples. They might be able to keep Hillory's absence of basic human decency, and lack of anything that resembles a soul from the public. Especially a public that is not inclined to believe in such things.

But seriously, I believe the bones they managed to retrieve from the pit into which the evil rotten Soviets had tossed them, included those of Anastasia... but, if I recall correctly, not her brother, Alexei. Who no one ever claimed survived, so it's possible they threw them elsewhere, given some special level of evil they wanted to perpetrate on the family.

428 "I do expect her negatives to come roaring forth... IF she is made to be exposed to the public."

Which is why Hillary just wheeled out Liz Warren -- who'd actually be a more charismatic Presidential candidate. And why Obama has been more public in attacking Trump lately than Hillary has.

Most of MSM has really shilled for Hillary in the last month. Can they keep it up? I say not for much longer, as they've been overdoing it and they'll lose credibility with swing voters.

Must make for interesting meetings at Clinton HQ as top staffers have to delicately tell Hillary how they have to limit and control her public exposure without being perfectly clear as to why.

Supposedly alexi was buried across the road to hide the total number of bodies so people could not use that number to figure out who they were. They went to great links to try to disguise the bodies including poring acid on their faces and staving in their faces and teeth with the butts of their rifles.

But it did not work. Also, they have found Alexi's body and if you go to Wiki there is an x-ray that shows the bullet hole in his skull where they shot him a second time because he wasn't dead after the first shot.

435 313 The thing that Scankles will not have that Obama had was the massive black turnout. She will still get 90 to 95% of the black vote, but the turnout will be back to the low numbers they have always had. In fact, it is likely to be even lower than normal because there are an awful lot of people who just hate the sight of her.

I'm hoping for this scenario. But I wonder, how many blacks will show up at the polls thinking Obama's still on the ticket (I'm talking very low-info voters. They're everywhere) and then vote for the Dem as long as they're there.
