President of the EU Parliament Slams Britain For "Violating the Rules:" "It Is Not The EU Philosophy That The Crowd Can Decide Its Fate"

Democracy can't be left in the hands of the filthy commoners.

Zero Hedge also excerpts this good Matt Taibi column about "the elites" (sneer quotes definitely sneering) who are constantly seeking little exceptions to the democratic practice in certain circumstances-- those circumstances being every single time they don't get their own way.

David French wonders if the filthy commoners aren't getting to the point of offering the (sneer quotes) "elites" the exact same level of loyalty the "elites" offer they themselves.

Is it any wonder that citizens of one of the greatest and strongest nations in human history would recoil from an international order that was proving mainly that it could enrich an elite without seeming to lift a finger to preserve the nation’s core values and traditions -- the very things that had made it great and strong? Is it any wonder that citizens of other great countries are -- wondering what loyalty they owe to that same elite?

30 There follows a small, condensed version of the rant in my head. I have seen such stupid shit on the teevee about how this will impact European security because of the UK armed forces and how the City of London won't matter economically anymore and all the rest of the falderall and claptrap.

Europe isn't one thing. It's a bunch of overlapping organizations. Britain is still in NATO. Britain was never in the Euro. Britain was never in the Schengen Zone. Britain has voted to exit the EU.

Now there will be two years of negotiations over the terms of leaving the EU. People who negotiate seek self-interest, so if it turns out to still be a good idea to have no tariffs on coal and steel they will agree to have no tariffs on cold and steel.

All they're getting rid of is Brussels telling them not to use Imperial measures and all of the other minutiae which petty desk tyrants like to tyrant about.

47 The irony is that Merkel is the one person most responsible for Brexit. In response, to save her ass, Merkel earlier today channeled Donald Trump and said that maybe "it was not the right time to pursue a quick deepening of cooperation between euro zone member states. The EU should instead act on popular concerns such as securing the bloc's borders, creating jobs and improve internal security."

Now you'd think that securing borders, creating jobs, and dealing with terrorism should have been her priority #1 all along, not some Grand Experiment.

To a leftist who once said something to this effect, I replied, "Well, I'm sure President Palin will appreciate your cooperation."

His reaction was priceless. It never occurred to him that the people in charge might not be to his liking.

Similarly, to a black friend who advocated taking from the wealthy to assist the poor, I replied that we should tax American blacks to send the money to their brethren in Africa. "After all, you have so much, and they have so little." A long silence ensued...

68 The "EU" is the very definition of "international socialism."

Go back and read Lenin and Engels. They wee obsesses not just with socialism as a concept, but with the necessity of its internationalness. That is why First the Bolsheviks and then Lenin and then Stalin went to EXTREME lengths to conquer and then bring into the fold of the USSR all the surrounding nations -- starting with ByeloRussia and Ukraine in the early '20s, and the the baltic states and then the Caucasus states and then the central Asian states and then the Warsaw Pact nations, etc. The point was that according to the foundational document of communist theory, it must be transnational, for otherwise it will devolve into nationalism -- as famously seen in the National Socialist Workers' Party, aka the Nazis, who championed national socialism as opposed to international socialism, which they vowed to destroy.

The EU is nothing more than the exact same dream as the USSR, but with its capital about 500 miles further west. That's the only difference.

The Brexit vote is one of the major turning points in human history, precipitating the popular rejection of international socialism, which was the surviving variant after Fascism and Naziism were defeated by force.

100 80 Speaking of RINO's, I was watching an interview of a woman who had just witnessed the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pantsuits show today in Ohio. She claimed to be a lifelong Republican, but also admitted that she had voted for Ofuckstick. Twice.
First thought to cross my mind was "Oh, so you're a RINO!"

"I'm a lifelong Communist, but in view of Clinton's mendacity, I feel morally compelled to vote for a Republican for the first time in my life."

The word "lifelong" in any sentence is a clear signal that the associated statement is pure horseshit.

We are at the point in the USA's and Europe's history when nearly all big businesses and banks CANNOT FUNCTION without i) an out of control unsustainable debt-spending government, and ii) the govt treasury lending 'free' money to the banks, i.e., at rates nearly at 0%.

I mean WTF??

123 Maybe a rearrangement of government is needed. Perhaps some combination of representative republic and straight democracy is needed.

Obviously we have the Athenian democracy as something that ancient writers and the founding fathers hated on one end. However, I don't think our founding fathers could see a government that would become a lifetime job of self enrichment, lobbyist, etc. concentrated in a imperial city on the Potomac.

The people have to take some of the blame for not picking better representatives and leaders, however the thing is so corrupt now that I don't know how you fix it without a major crisis in the country. Even if the people wise up now, they can't fix it with current tools.

A direct people vote of "yes or no" on

1. congressional budgets
2. big foreign policy adventures
3. government employee pay
4. changes in terms of office for politicians and judges
5. Or things like that..you get the point

What we need is a check on political hacks, lobbyists, big money, etc. and the best check is a direct vote / veto of the people on certain things. Basically a fourth branch of government - The referendum.

Plus it is a good political position to take - you know fighting for the people to have a say in government against the crony capitalist/political elite sounds like something younger people might be willing to listen to after they have been screwed over enough.

I don't want a direct democracy on everything or a majority of things, heck even Athens did not have that (a council, etc. for day to day running of the state), but something (a force) that will check and balance a system that is no longer in check or balanced.

192 I'm not a fan of the "elites" label. There is nothing "elite" about them. They are charlatans who would be unemployed and destitute but for their government positions.

They also have a point. The unwashed masses are idiots and too stupid to participate in politics. We just disagree as to why they are idiots. They say it because when they don't get their way. I say the masses are idiots for continuously electing them and, in the rare instances when they don't, it's generally because they didn't get the unicorn they were promised... but they're still demanding Skittle Shitting Unicorns... plus reparations for not having a unicorn all this time.

The lesson tone learned is a simple one that that a bunch of smart guys tried to teach the world a little over 200 years ago: large, centralized government is fucking idiotic and there is no uniform standard of anything to which all the world aspires. They even wrote something down about, "government of, by and for the people" and powers not expressly granted to the government being retained by the states and ultimately the people.

In other words, if you want a fucking unicorn, get off your couch, go find one, stop expecting other people to support you while unicorn hunting since its your choice, you believe in unicorns, and it's no one else's problem. When you discover that there indeed are no unicorns and you're broke, as everyone tried to tell you, it's still your fucking problem. Go find employment that does not involve unicorns. Yes, that will be harder for you than everyone else because, while they were gaining real experience and producing value, your stupid ass was hunting unicorns. Get to the back of the line and eventually, someone might stop laughing at what a jackass you are long enough to give you a chance to prove you learned from your mistakes.

Is it any wonder that citizens of other great countries are wondering what loyalty they owe to that same elite?

Oh, and by the way let me say my friend Kevin Williamson is absolutely correct. White working class communities in the USA deserve to die. They are killing themselves and their families. No one is making them do it. No one is putting a bottle in their hand. Immigrants aren't making them cheat on their wives or snort OxyContin Obama isn't walking them into the lawyer's office to file a bogus disability. The lazy white working class should lower their sights and underbid wages to the 60 million immigrants we GOP-e opened the borders for to benefit the Donor Class. Those manufacturing plantes the white working class used to work in are no located in China or Mexico making the same products but paying workers two dollars a day with no environmental or safety standards, just as the historic economist David Ricardo prescribed, so that the transnational post-American Donor Class Elites can access that USA consumer market with cheaper labor. So get off your asses and move to China or Mexico where the jobs are, you worthless white working class!

I went on a business trip to Germany about 12 years ago. From the air
before landing in Frankfort am Main, I saw these HUGE buildings. I went

If you go there again rent a car. Plenty of Germans live in houses. Plenty of them even own their own houses. Besides, if you have a car, you get to drive on the Autobahn. Where there is a speed limit, it is usually over 80 MPH.

280 Pretty much since Ancient Greece humanity has been aware of the danger of democracy.

I mean the real dangers.

Ostracizing people in Athens or the trial of Socrates.

this is why our government is to protect our liberty, not "rule by majoritarian democracy."

282 Watched a terrific documentary about Romania called Chuck Norris vs Communism. Basically its about how a secret police cheif translated western films into Romanian, mostly by one woman doing all the voices, and how many people it influenced and affected.

Its really neat, especially the parts about heroism and the seeds of freedom. Those rallies of Romanian people at the end, literally hundreds of thousands of people in the streets saying "FU" to the communist leaders... that's just inspiring.

294 >>> One tiny island country is that powerful. Who knew?
....

Well, the British Empire used to be astoundingly powerful. Then the whole conquest/ colony thing went out of fashion. Bit of transition, then they became ever more powerful, even though they were just a tiny couple of islands.

Then they abandoned being British and embraced the political, social and economic policies that the opposed Communist Russia for while Russia gave that shit up as a bad job.

So, now they're vanilla Euro country #2,386.82 with communism light (socialism) with absolutely nothing left of their centuries old identify except for a bunch of layabouts they they insist on bowing to even though they have no purpose.

Kind of like the British working in the civil service in India before independence.

The more that I think about it the fact that a large number (although fewer every year as they die off) of British people experienced the EU system from the other side and recognized that they were being treated like natives in the British colonies. Then the British have also been subjected to decades of miniseries like "Jewel In the Crown", "Heat of the Sun" and "Indian Summers" and perhaps the British are less sympathetic to a bunch of bureaucrats who claim the authority to rule every aspect of their lives but who views them with absolute contempt.

297 Ref the Rolling Stone story.

The guy talks about the problems of Democracy - of Majority Rule. He doesn't understand that in a REPUBLIC the Constitution is the check on raw majority rule. That's why the concept of a Living Constitution is such a problem. A Living Constitution is a constitution that bends to majority rule!
