Third Most Spoken Language Map [CBD]

third most spoken.jpg

Most of them are not surprising, but a few are real head-scratchers. Pacific-Island languages in Utah?

Anyway, it's a fun diversion to try to figure out exactly why some of these languages are spoken in each state.

It's not that surprising if you've spent any time in SLC. Utah of 2016 is not Utah if 1990.

125 After giving this much thought, I've finally settled on the best solution for the DC problem. They're not a state, you know, and it's been grating on them for years. They even have a street..."No Taxation Without Representation Boulevard", (or something like that).

So. Step one, the feds enter into negotiations with western states where they generally own more of the land than do the states, and select a new site for the nation's capitol.

DC is split down the middle, and the two chunks are forced on Virginia, and Maryland. All the special federal bennies accorded to DC are immediately terminated.

Anything of historical importance worth keeping in DC, is dismantled, and later reassembled at the new capitol site.

At our shiny new capitol, there are no residential sections. No one lives there, except the president. It has no DMV, it has no license plates, or municipal police force.

The state, or states that house, and service the expected bloatacratic infusion of workers, lobbyists, and glittering hangers on have to do so on their own dime.

And lastly, we repeat this simple exercise every fifty years.

It's not so much Maine and Vermont have many who speak French, but that they don't have many who speak Spanish. In the 2010 Census, only 1.3% and 1.5% of their populations were Hispanic.

The only state with a smaller % Hispanic was West Virginia at 1.2%. If French is third in WV, perhaps second is German rather than Spanish, as German is third-most spoken in neighboring Ohio and Kentucky.

of a shock after living in 105 degree 100% humidity Vietnam."

Recall a Green Beret who had spent his time in Vietnam doing the classic training-of-indigenous-forces mission. His team took over a bunch of highlands Hmong originally stood up as a unit (if you can call it that) by CIA officers.

He described his shock at being surrounded by Hmong shaking strings of ears at him and demanding money. The more ears, the louder the demand. "We kill VC! Kill plenty VC! You pay now!"

From the tiny size of some of the ears they had collected, it was obvious to him that the Hmong were applying an... _expansive_ view of who was and was not a VC. Yeah, that toddler in the corner of the hut isn't grown up yet, but once she is, she's sure to go over to Charlie. Better not take any chances.

His commander told the Hmong to knock it off and that there would be no more payment for ears. Things got extremely uncomfortable -- just a handful of Special Forces advisers surrounded by hundreds of angry armed Hmong -- and they eventually had to call off the mission and exfil home.

He was not especially happy when a few short years later he started spotting Hmong on the street here in the States.

They border Quebec and the French speaking parts of New Brunswick (which has a large Arcadian population - people whose ancestors never found their way to Louisiana) so I would imagine a fair number of them do.

It's more surprising to me that any Cajuns still speak Cajun French. Their dialect persisted for a long time just because the Cajuns were so isolated from the outside world. That is no longer true. From what I understand, only very old people still speak Cajun, while younger ones still to their own version of English, one that incorporates a lot of Cajun words.

A French guy I know who traveled to Cajun country told me that old people he met down there were delighted to meet someone from "the old country" and started talking to him in what they thought was French. He said that with the best will in the world he understood maybe 1 word in every 10.

Same thing with Germans who try to understand "Pennsylvania Dutch." The ancestors of the Cajuns and the Amish left France and Germany centuries ago. Their language reflects that.

Same in TX. Asians are natural entrepreneurs and savers and make owning their own business a life goal. Nail salons are a cheap, easy startup and can be staffed with all family much like Chinese do with restaurants and drycleaners.

199 Question: Every time I go to a nail salon, the nail people are always Vietnamese. Always. I've had my nails done in Wisconsin, Illinois, Arizona and New Mexico. Always Vietnamese. Did Vietnam buy out the entire franchise?

Heard a tale once of a lady who, new in town, went with a friend to get her nails done. Her friend had gone to the same place for years, loved the job they did. The ladies who worked there had always chatted on in Vietnamese, which naturally she didn't understand word one of.

You can see where this is going: As it happens, Ms. New-In-Town spoke and understood Vietnamese. And thus understood every last nasty thing they were saying about all ethnicities that were not Vietnamese, including the ones sitting in their chairs.

Lady got her nails done, paid, and thanked them for the wonderful job.

In Vietnamese.

204 After giving this much thought, I've finally settled on the best solution for the DC problem.

________________________________________________
I'm all for that, except Virginia already got back our portion of DC in the form of Arlington. Maryland gets that craphole.

206 There's a scene in the animated Japanese film "Princesss Mononoke" where the leading character shoots and kills "the god of the forest" -- some kind of universal nature deity, represented by a stag with antlers -- but instead of simply falling down and dying, the inner spirit of the nature-god kind of pours out of the stag's body and grows to immense size and eventually transforms the entire dying forest into a green thriving garden of Eden.

There's something about that scene that reminds me of what is going on in Europe right now at this very moment. The elites and bureaucrats and transnantiopnal socialists though they could kill the spirit of individualism and independence and freedom, but instead that have unleashed a formerly-containly energy that is now going to sweep over the continent. The entire project of "global government" which has been the goal of the Left since the 1850s has suddenly and shockingly taken a massive bodyblow, as the EU is now disintegrating and the desire local governance is sweeping the world.

No, really, there is something to this. Asians have to save up money for airfare and go through all kinds bureaucratic, expensive hurdles to come here. The reason they succeed here is bc American citizenship and a better life is valuable to them. They earn a better life through hard work and saving and living frugally. It's a very different mentality than walking across a border and applying for every welfare benefit you can you find. They aren't perfect immigrants and tend to live in subcultures of their own, but Asians aren't even considered a minority anymore bc they have been too successful and generally are middle or upper middle class. I don't think we need anymore H1B1 visas anymore bc we are denying our natural born citizens here that can fill those jobs, but there is a reason they succeed compared to other immigrant groups.

Yeah, and this is why that evil racist bastard Rudyard Kipling wrote this:

The White Man's Burden

Take up the White Man's burden
Send forth the best ye breed
Go send your sons to exile
To serve your captives' need
To wait in heavy harness
On fluttered folk and wild
Your new-caught, sullen peoples
Half devil and half child
Take up the White Man's burden
In patience to abide
To veil the threat of terror
And check the show of pride;
By open speech and simple
An hundred times made plain
To seek another's profit
And work another's gain
Take up the White Man's burden
And reap his old reward:
The blame of those ye better
The hate of those ye guard
The cry of hosts ye humour
(Ah slowly) to the light:
"Why brought ye us from bondage,
"Our loved Egyptian night?"
Take up the White Man's burden
Have done with childish days
The lightly proffered laurel,
The easy, ungrudged praise.
Comes now, to search your manhood
Through all the thankless years,
Cold-edged with dear-bought wisdom,
The judgment of your peers!

Can't speak for all Asians, but for mainland Chinese immigrants in Commiefornia, one reason American citizenship is valuable is that they can then apply to bring in their elderly parents from China under "family reunification".

The young Chinese who thus apply are told that they must financially support their parents once here and not allow them to become "a public charge".

Since there's absolutely no enforcement of this edict, the Chinese younguns bring in their parents from the PRC and then immediately dump Mom and Dad into the SSI system, without paying a dime for their upkeep.

Actually, that's true. A nearby village was provided with a motorized bucket system that lasted, oh about (checks watch) 10 minutes before it packed up and was never repaired or replaced.
And there was great resistance to everything she did. She spent most of her time negotiating with the villagers to get them to get off their asses and contribute either in cash or in kind to deepen the well, so they wouldn't like, you know, die of thirst when the water table dropped (as it did periodically). But they couldn't see the sense of it.

And they saw NO sense in fencing the cattle in to keep from the shitting in the water supply.
But all cultures are equally valid and valuable, apart from ours, of course.

306 Here's a thought.

My grandparents (on my mother's side) came to this country during the Depression, not speaking any English. They later told me, "We wanted to become good Americans. We wanted to never need a handout, we wanted to vote, we wanted to be good neighbors and good citizens." They agreed to speak nothing but English, even at home, once they learned enough.

Within six months, they learned enough English to fit into the neighborhood (I guess there were a lot less words back then). Grandad worked for the same comepany (Savage Arms) for 42 years before he retired, living in a house they owned, free and clear. They never missed an election (they voted Democrat, but it was Massachusetts, so what do you expect?), and considered voting to be a sacred duty.

I look forward - or, maybe, backwards - to the day when that map is "The Most Common Language People USED TO Speak."

Why was the West able to colonize other continents so easily? why didn't they encounter wave, after wave of indigenous people, the kind of populations we're seeing now being produced in the third world? It's because they didn't have the technology, to provide enough basic sanitation and health care, and food to produce a sizable population. We provide them with that ability, and now in return they send us low skill high problem "immigrants", lots of them. No good deed goes unpunished. The real question is can we drag them into the 21st century or are they going to drag us back into the 18th. One or the other has to happen.

341 Even Germans don't eat at German restaurants often enough to keep them in business. Pizza, Argentine steakhouses, doner kebab.

This was true 25 years ago when I lived there. The only German restaurants in Germany were sort of like theme parks. Restaurants were Greek and Italian, but street food was still German.

That was before the Doener Kebab, though, which is now the most popular fast food in Krautistan.

Sealy, TX used to be a big MRAP manufacturing facility until the government went with the MATV from Oshkosh. The Sealy plant was closed but my understanding is that there were still using the facility to store undelivered MRAPs. I remember an article that said they were being sold off to scrap metal dealers for pennies on the dollar after the US government paid for them because that's the way they roll.

This is one reason I have very little interest in cooking. Bad things can happen.

418 Ok uh, there's a "Kittenplay lifestyle?"

The Chateau is the first ever online magazine dedicated solely to cat girls and the kittenplay lifestyle. Our magazine represents the luxury life of a pet, and the sensual nature of the feline. The Chateau, nicknamed CatGirlManor is a private residence based in Colorado, USA. Occasionally we host private and public events at the mansion, but also host events in Denver, Las Vegas and New Orleans. Our brand inspires the Princess in girls who still desire the finer things in life, subjects we explore are champagne, high end couture, the arts and fine cuisine.

Still looks like a brothel to me

Posted by: joncelli, Bridge Troll and Crossbow Afficianado at June 27, 2016 03:37 PM (Pby3z)"

When they first started settling Vietnamese in the United States in the 1970s they made a real effort to spread them around evenly all over the country. In fairly short order, as soon as they had learned enough English and had some skills and money, a lot of the Vietnamese moved to congregate in a few places like Orange County, California and the Gulf Coast of Texas. There are still lots of Vietnamese in towns all over the United States but some places have a lot more than others.

OK, I have been wondering about this, too.

I know of a family that brought their parents over, and I wondered about the financials...now I know.

And word must have gotten out because I was at a new dim sum place that was packed with very old Chinese who dressed like they arrived yesterday.

Canada solved this problem with super-visas: your fam can come visit indefinitely, but not on the taxpayer dime.

Posted by: Sexypig at June 27, 2016 05:16 PM (UBBWX)

451 BTW, this is the real problem: lots of laws and rules about immigrants (or even locals) to not get welfare are simply ignored.

454 Interesting.

I've worked with and am friends with so many people from India. I really love them because they are usually willing to adjust culturally (well, at least the kids) and they have a respect for American laws and customs.

Plus, they're just darn nice and good people with high expectations and values. You might find the original immigrants working at 7-11 but their children become doctors, lawyers, and engineers. They highly value education and hard work.

I agree.

50 years ago, I'm pretty certain that the 3rd-most spoken language in Texas was German. Some school districts in the Texas Hill Country used German as their first language and English was just used to get by.

I have a close friend whose mother grew up in Boerne (Texas) and English was always a second language to her.

458 In many cities immigrants from a given country will come to dominate some line of small businesses. When I lived in Chicago the diners/coffee shop cafes were mostly owned by Greeks. The cleaning ladies and cleaning contractors who served the office buildings were all Polish. The Pakistanis owned the laundromats. The Arabs owned the inner city convenience stores. The Koreans had a lock on the dry cleaning establishments. Often recently emigrated family members would be employed in the jobs that didn't require interaction with customers. Eventually the family might help them buy their own business.

At the dry cleaners I used there was an elderly Korean woman who was a wiz with repairs and alternations. She worked Saturdays, when one of her American born grandchildren could translate the customer's requests. Those kids always had a stack of STEM textbooks to study when their translation services weren't needed.
