Bob McDonnell may not be convicted under the standard proposed by federal prosecutors.
However, we hereby find that the federal government can tax the hell out of him and imprison him if he doesn't pay the tax. Posted by: Chief "Justice" John Roberts at June 27, 2016 01:03 PM (57K5j) 3

On the one hand, from my very very quick reading of the opinion it sounds like hey you can go right up to the line of corruption but so long as it's not an official act which we mean is only this stuff it's totes fine which has no possible room for abuse, nope nope.
On the other hand, reigning in the law means what I say it means Federal prosecutors is an unalloyed good. So, I'm, you know, torn. Posted by: alexthechick - I despair I despair at June 27, 2016 01:07 PM (mf5HN) 22

Just because the jury instructions may or may not have been "too broad" does not mean the jury necessarily and thereby convicted him based on that broadness. The presumption is that the allegedly poor instructions by the judge resulted in the conviction here.

According to the wiki, both convicted, sentenced, and out on bond awaiting the supreme court decision. So, apparently, they can be tried a second time for the same offense because the result didn't come out right. and keep retrying the case until they get a conviction that sticks, apparently. but I am not a lawyer, so don't ask me how it works. Wasn't Ted Stevens' conviction in his trial tossed out on the basis of prosecutorial misconduct? In fact aren't the perps still involved in administrative or even level punishment?
Yet of course the crowing about that (the conviction) was intense and nasty at the time. The data overflows, but just recall (at the state level, but how were any of these abuses *not* federal cases, involving civil rights violations?) the WI persecutions, and just last week the astonishing inappropriate mouthing off of the US attorney for Idaho. I've said for years (here) that lawlessness in all its forms is the issue. Administrative (as in the case of these abuses by "law enforcement" authorities), judicial (just for variety, behold the dishonest, abusively unprofessional defiance of SCOTUS rulings by the 9th Circuit on 2nd amendment matters), and executive - at the presidential level. But the only way to fix this is to elect Hillary. "Smart" people have written this, so we have our guidance. Posted by: rhomboid at June 27, 2016 01:15 PM (QDnY+) 59

Marilyn Mosby and Kamala Harris were two of a kind -- young, enthusiastic far-left Democrats, and prosecutors, designated "rising stars" in the Democrat party. McDonnell polled well in NoVa when he ran for governor and remained reasonably popular there. Not good for Dems, who rely on big sweeps in NoVa to win state-wide elections.
The Obama-branch of the Dems feared was that Romney would pick McDonnell as his VP candidate, which might have turned VA against the Lightbringer. The Clinton-branch wanted their bagman McAuliffe in to help set up her VA win in 2016. Discrediting the VA GOP by attacking McDonnell was a start. I doubt that the feds will pursue this further. Several ways money dries up.
The funniest (in my opinion) is if every other trading partner (country) has their exchange rate go to a penny against the dollar. Sometimes it's a married person, carrying on an affair. So we're talking about social shaming, or lack thereof. Where's the line? Elonis v. United States, 575 US ___ (2015) is an example, actually. I have a wife. I enjoy looking at lip-stick lesbians.
Why not? Not planning on inserting anything. Eye sex is it. Posted by: Ok at June 27, 2016 02:12 PM (rnH8X) 259

Ask her that if she is a lesbian, does she just look at herself naked in the mirror all day?

Just because the jury instructions may or may not
have been "too broad" does not mean the jury necessarily and thereby convicted him based on that broadness. The presumption is that the allegedly poor instructions by the judge resulted in the conviction here. Posted by: Christopher Taylor at June 27, 2016 01:08 PM (39g3+) There was no basis other than the jury instructions to convict him since there was no "pro quo" for the "quid" he got (and even less to convict his wife because, although she was a harridan who is the one who actually asked for the loans... and clothing... and jewelry, nobody elected her for anything therefor she could not commit "official acts"). McDonnel is a decent man and I'm glad he's not going to prison (he really can't be convicted on the courts standard of officialacts unless the find some other scheme beyond a meeting or a luncheon.)
He's ruined in politics though and that's case closed, too. Ironically I think it was essentially his decency that led to this sorry state of affairs. He did what he could to placate an unreasonably discontented wife, he probably did think if Williams as a friend instead of predator. It was hard of him to conceive of so much dishonor in his wife.
