Merkel Wants to Block Countries from Following Britain Out the Door

General exit?

Angela Merkel has said the EU needs to stop other countries following Britain out of the door amid market fears that the bloc is 'no longer governable' after Brexit.

The German Chancellor told her conservative party board in a conference call that it was necessary to prevent other European Union members going down the same path as Britain.

Merkel is also said to have revealed that international financial markets are concerned the EU is 'no longer governable' in the wake of Britain's exit vote.

She added that it was not the right time to pursue a quick deepening of cooperation between euro zone member states.

The EU should instead act on popular concerns such as securing the bloc's borders, creating jobs and improve internal security, she said.

By the way, a British butcher is now selling meat in pounds and ounces.

23 Eh, last time I was in the UK (2013 I guess) pretty much every butcher outside the center of London was still selling using the Imperial system. And they never got on board with using metric on their roads. It's still miles, not klicks, and MPH and not KPH.

I guess my point is that it's not so much that a few butchers are ditching the metric system, it's that the entire country never really got on board which says something, I think.

To be honest, I really wish they'd adopt metric, at least for weighing people. How much do you weigh? 12 stones? WTF is a "stone"?!?!

40 When I first heard and read about what the EU was (ca. 1995), the image I formed was layer upon layer of highly paid bureaucrats.

The other thing I surmised was that the EU was a way for the idle rich and powerless former aristocrats/royalty to 'get back into the game' and 'put a bit of stick about'. And have fabulous parties on the proles dime.

I was right. Being part of the EU Elite is way better than the UN (too many darkies).

49 So in other words the German government might have to go back to running...Germany?

Oh, heavens. So tragic.

The proper timeline on which to measure Brexit is not two days or two months but 20 years. The real start to the slippery slope that left Britain at the feet of the unelected Eurocrats started in 1975; the Soviet-backed labor union Trots had brought the British economy to collapse, and they were prepared to grab any passing raft to save them.

It's funny how the leadership of both parties misjudged their electorate. Both have a whole lot of Remain-backing MPs whose constituencies went very heavily Leave.

Corbyn's facing a full-on revolt by Parliamentary Labour over being insufficiently committed to Remain; the problem is that too many of these Remainers and Blairites are out of sync with their own electorates and trying to bum-rush the old Commie out the door for having Leave tendencies may just make him more popular within many of the constituency parties that gave him the job in the first place.

The EU, an unelected and unaccountable body, whose governing body's members do not pay taxes, is failing. And this is a good thing.

The fluff we were fed - a free and open trading bloc, open borders between member states - sounded all well and good.

Then they caught the AGW fever. Now they ban hairdryers, tea pots, toasters, oddly shaped bananas and the list goes on.

The people rose up and spoke. Now the EU governors want to thwart this? (remember - unelected and unaccountable).

This isn't going to end well.

103 23 Eh, last time I was in the UK (2013 I guess) pretty much every butcher outside the center of London was still selling using the Imperial system.

Bullshit.

What concerns international financial markets is all that shit sovereign debt denominated in euros is going to be paid off by fewer and fewer countries as the relatively productive ones (outside of Germany) get off the sinking ship. Now none of that debt was ever really going to be paid, but that point at which it will all have to be written off as lost is accelerating towards the present.

137 Consider, too, that the UK are big consumers of German wheels, also big producers of German-owned brands like Mini and Bentley, and that German policy has been a clusterfuck in a number of areas other than the migrant flood - energy prices are ruinously high, you have the EU rattling the chains over financial transaction taxes, the skilled workforce is aging out, etc.

So...if any jobs are repatriated from the UK to Germany as a result of Brexit it'll be a small number of corporate HQ positions. The Brits are more likely to gain manufacturing if they adopt sane energy policies, the banks will hold their own, fishing and farming will no longer be hobbled to subsidize the French, etc.

The lack of an EU trade deal with the US hasn't prevented our roads from being filled with BMWs (or Minis), but lower US energy and labor costs have moved a fair chunk of German automaker growth to Alabama and South Carolina instead of Bavaria and Nordrhein-Westfalia.

Note that BMW is building a 3-series plant in Mexico. They've been building 3s in South Africa for a couple decades, even importing some of those to the US, and it looks like they're shutting that down.

Perhaps. If I were a Trump supporter, I would take comfort in that result as well. The other thing is, since publicly traded companies aren't spending much cash on capex or hiring, what they HAVE been spending it on during the Obama years has been stock buybacks.

So you hear a lot of noisy rooster crowing from liberals about how "See, the stock market does great under Democrats!" Without any comprehension of how broader economic demand is still horribly weak, and genuine profitability is fragile. Bubbly equities markets are not a reliable proxy for a healthy economy, not in the age of financial engineering.

The other thing that's been going on to make the stock market look better than it otherwise would is that Boris Yellen is magicking a ridiculous amount of virtual money into existence, and the lion's share of it ends up fueling speculation, including in, ta da, the stock market. When the Fed finally has to stop doing that? Look out below for U.S. stocks.

The real issue for them is this: a LOT of Labour constituencies voted Leave. Most of them have Remain MPs.

Some will undoubtedly keep their heads down and listen to their voters. But a whole lot of them have doubled down on Blairite/Remain positions.

England is trying to limit the number of immigrants. Brussels says that any EU citizen--even some goatherd from the hills of Bulgaria has an absolute right to emigrate to any other EU country--including England.

So if Eastern Europeans want to emigrate to London (and boy howdy do they ever want to do that) England has sto take them--or so says Brussels.

OTOH if an Australian PhD, a Canadian Engineer or an American with an MBA wants to emigrate to England---and the Bulgarian goatherds have used up the total number of immigration slots for England that year---well tough noogies, the Phd, the Engineer adn the MBA holder can't get in and get a work permit.

England needs more engineers and PhDs--and fewer goatherds. But that's not how Brussels saw it.

So--what can't go on--won't go on. BREXIT and a majority of the British just said so.

That's easy, in fact obvious: to impose Marxism. Marxists learned from the early kibbutzes that the nuclear family was the major obstacle to socialism. Men in one barracks, women in another, children in a third? Uh uh. Women demanded to be with their families, and what mama want, mama get. Then when every family lived in its own cottage, every mother wanted the best for her family, engendering competition between families, rather than cooperation across the kibbutz. The end of the socialist experiment was only a matter of time.
Ergo, the nuclear family has to go.

metropole their voters are largely Leave. Some will undoubtedly keep their heads down and listen to their
voters. But a whole lot of them have doubled down on Blairite/Remain
positions."

There was a genuinely excellent piece by Peter Hitchens (brother to the late Christopher) which delved into just this dichotomy. It's in the Daily Wail, so I apologize for their sidebar full of sideboob and celebrity nitwits.

259 The EU is just another way to collect people's money and spend a little while skimming millions. It's a long con, and a well done one that's backed by "smart" politicians. In other words, they all agree with each other that it's a swell idea. Once the people caught onto the gravy train of EU politics and the horrible regulation bureaucracy that comes with any liberal utopia, people started wanting out.

The EU will crumble. But another liberal boondoggle will take it's place. For them, there is never enough power or money. As one weed dies, ten will take it's place.

So while I rejoice in the fall of the EU, Merkel and Brussels, I am old enough to know this will never stop until the consequences for fleecing the people are too severe. And fortunately for them and their ilk, it takes a whole lot of poking the bear before the bear actually decides to eat someone.

So maybe they get a revolution to deal with. It will pass. People will go back home and slowly they will start to poke the bear again.

Many rules and regulations are created by executive branch without any representation in the EPA, Homeland Security, etc. I though congress was supposed to pass the laws, not the executive branch. However, congress has rolled over for years now, including the current one controlled by the so called "small government/conservative/constitutional" party. Obama, and future presidents, are now the law givers considering they control all the regulations and fines, etc.

So...if the EU breaks ups, is the United States not far behind?

For example the Democrats put into their party plank the "goal" that Climate Change Denial is criminal and those people should go to prison. SO much for the first amendment,

Britain will need to negotiate trade treaties and tariffs, but in the end it'll get done. The EU will keep charging Britain "fees" that won't be much different than what Britain pays as an EU member. The London financial district will have some sorting out over regulations. The gain for Britain is border control and an end to onerous EU regulations.

Other countries can't leave as easily, because they're on the Euro. The EU can't let other countries leave, else it'll be the end of the EU as European experiment.

Unless he's talking about places like muslim countries, in which case, what with the stoning and the mutilations and whatnot, I would think a stronger word than "discrimination" is called for. Somehow I doubt he's scolding those people though.

I have no problem with him saying they shouldn't be discriminated against. Now for the most part, they aren't - at least in the US. And I'm not sure why the Church should be in the apology business, other than encouraging people to "apologize" to God for their sins.

A stone is 14 lb.

Why wouldn't they just say 168 pounds?

*
*
"Stone" (both singular and plural -- 1 stone, 12 stone) is a much older measurement unit -- maybe medieval?

I too thought the UK had gone all metric. The classic car magazines from Britain all mention kph and kilos and the like.

Posted by: Christopher Taylor at June 27, 2016 12:50 PM (39g3+)

That's not what he means. He was giving one of his pope talks on the papal plane to reporters. He said that Christians need to apologize to homosexuals and women.
He didn't say what for exactly, but the implication is because Christians have been evil and mean and nasty to those special groups.

And yes, the church is supposed to discriminate against homosexual lifestyles. Not apologize to them for having a belief dictated by scripture.
