I don't remember hearing the word fuck very much when I was a child. in the '60's. In fact, when I was about 6, I embarrassed my parents at Sunday dinner when I asked them what it meant. I had seen graffiti on the sidewalk in the park and it was a strange new word to me. They told me never to say that word, but did not (unsurprisingly) tell me what it meant. Now it seems I hear it everywhere - on the street, at work, in the grocery store - and nobody worries about little kids hearing them either. Posted by: Donna&&&&&V. That link about the bride and the sparkler reminds me of my brother-in-law's wedding a few years ago.
At the reception, I smelled smoke and asked my husband if he smelled it too. He did, and started looking around. He realized that the 80-year-old woman who was a long-time family friend was sitting too close to a candle, and the back of her hairspray-shellacked hair was getting singed. He put his hand on the back of her hair to extinguish it. She said, "oh hi honey" and gave him a pat on the head too. He smiled and said "I'm just putting out the fire in your hair Mrs. F." She said "thanks sweetie" and went back to sipping her Scotch. Posted by: bluebell at July 02, 2016 09:24 AM (805dc) 55

Yes. And, they typically get called out by other riders. Compared to the number of absolutely horrible, rude, erratic drivers? I'll take a horrible cyclist over a horrible driver any day. Apparently the State Highway Administration in Maryland is determined to add bike lanes to all state roads, whether it's appropriate or not. Last month I attended a meeting for property owners about possible road expansion/improvements in a commercial area. Most of the property owners already do not have enough parking because the road has already been widened from two lanes to four. Now the state wants to add a median or center turn lane, bike lanes on both sides of the road, sidewalks and trees, which would completely eliminate parking for some of the business owners. Finally someone asked, "Do we have to have bike lanes? on both sides of the road?" and someone else added, "I'm a cyclist and I would never ride through this intersection. We shouldn't be encouraging people to ride bikes on this stretch of the road." Somehow, though, I doubt that the highway people will see it that way.

It is that kind of stuff that really seems to upset people.

Second week was brother and me renting a car and exploring Bulge and Remagen sites. Found LOTS of cool stuff, if you like discovering bridges that stopped Peiper. Wonderful time, turning it into a....book? Posted by: goatexchange at July 02, 2016 09:55 AM (8pDb8) 89

The upper class got off lightly Although the great majority of casualties in WW1 were from the working class, the social and political elite were hit disproportionately hard by WW1. Their sons provided the junior officers whose job it was to lead the way over the top and expose themselves to the greatest danger as an example to their men. 5. I'm polite and give them plenty of room. A number of years ago I lived closer to work and used the bicycle on nice days. I always obeyed the traffic laws and was well aware of the laws of physics regarding masses in motion. I never had a problem. If you're ever within 100 miles of KC, make every effort to see the WWI monument and museum there. It's one of the best museums I've ever been to. It's laid out chronologically*, and starts with a detailed exploration of world conditions prior to the war. They have full scale, immersive simulations of trenches, and it's creepy good. Seamus - yes, agree. I think in a Omaha's case, the plan was to throw as many resources (men and material) onto the beaches and hope some of them survived long enough to sort it out. Also, the role played by the USN destroyers is significant. one look at the bluffs over looking the beaches, and you really get a feel for, "How in the world can ANYONE survive and move on with ANY organized effort?" Some of the answer lies with DDs firing 5" guns at MG positions from 1500yds away. This was noted by senior officers in the aftermath. The main weakness of the defenders was insufficient numbers/positions. Take out one defensive point and a 25yd gap opens that isn't covered.

Not to be a total downer: read the link at Drudge from Rush. "We're being played." or don't. Posted by: Brave Sir Robin at July 02, 2016 10:07 AM (SeD0w) ---------------------- I listened to it, and he's adamant that there will be no indictment. I'll take his word on that -- it's unavoidable after the tarmac meeting -- but I think the door is still open to Obama's Revenge: FBI recommends indictment, Obama shoves Hillary out and parachutes Biden in, Obama pardons Hillary on his way out the door. So we're slagging on cyclists? In my neck of the woods, I'd say a good 90% of all cyclists I see on the road completely disregard all stop signs, lights, and other traffic control devices. They never signal and routinely cut off oncoming cars that have the right of way. I used to cycle a lot, and meticulously followed the traffic laws, so I don't have a lot of sympathy for these folks. Also, Direct Action can suck it.

there will be no indictment.
- Might not be an entirely bad thing. That would allow Trump to rail against the obvious corruption of Hillz, Obozo, and the Donks generally. Gentleman Rombley wouldn't have done that but this is a new ballgame. Posted by: Anonosaurus Wrecks, Racist for Dinosaurs at July 02, 2016 11:09 AM (Nwg0u) 177

One of the advantages of a draft is that the armed forces got an
incredible cross-section of the country. the guy next to you while you were trying to figure out how to do something might have been an engineer or a bricklayer or a farmer or a car mechanic...all with different experience. Similar dynamic back in 1745-6, when the New England colonies, fed up with the inability of the British government to capture the French fortress of Louisburg, put together an army and went to take it themselves. They had no siege cannon, but their plans called for capturing some French cannon, so they brought along a bunch of ammo for the guns they intended to capture. Well, they capture the guns - spiked - but there were a bunch of gunsmiths serving in the ranks and they were able to reactivate the weapons. Then the carpenters in the ranks figured out how to build causeways over the swamps to get the guns into position. Louisburg fell, against all logic, though it cost the colonists something like 25 percent casualties. The British gave it back to the French in the peace treaty several years after, and had to retake it in the French and Indian War. It is story that really deserves to be better known. Later on the Revolution, the early Continental Army stunned the British with the speed with which they could dig massive fortifications. Farmers could dig really, really fast.... "Damn it I read those numbers and I get all teary-eyed. I'm pathetic.
Good for a cry at any battle statistic. Over the years, all those young men dying. Europe's productivity poured into the ground." I have a battered copy of Alan Clark's _The Donkeys_ somewhere in the back numbers on the bookshelves. It'll be pulled out and re-read this weekend. Gristle Enacsed Head (Haven't seen hum around lately) likes to say outrageous things merely to get a reaction; I don't think he even believes some of what he posts. I mean, his handle is ":Gristle encased Head", for goodness sake- which doesn't lead on the believe he's always serious/ Yes, there are some cyclists that behave badly but many more car drivers who do. You're probably gone now, but people are often surly on these threads. If it's not one thing it's another. They got me with movie magic:
The Swedish actress Britt Ekland was cast as the innkeeper's lascivious daughter, although two body doubles were used for her naked scenes, as Ekland was three months pregnant with her son Nic, to Lou Adler. Stuart Hopps (the film's choreographer) called upon the services of a London-based exotic dancer called Miss P who gyrated at the doorway, whilst local 18-year-old extra, Jane Jackson was filmed in the wall scenes (although in reality, the bedrooms of Willow and Sergeant Howie were not through the wall from each other: Willow's was upstairs in the Cally Estates offices in Gatehouse of Fleet whilst Howie's was 35 miles (56 kilometres) away in a family home in the Main Street of Whithorn). Her dialogue and singing voice were later dubbed by Scottish singer Annie Ross. Posted by: 9:00AM at July 02, 2016 11:50 AM (CRXed) 188
"there will be no indictment."
Because she's too big to indict? Hillary has had a Big Exposure for months, but MSM has ignored it, or obscured it with disinformation. As I write, Fox continues to do so with legal "experts" who say that Hillary didn't have the intent to cause leaks to our enemies and how can you ever get into someone's head to prove intent anyway, so this is all a nothing burger. They couldn't be more wrong. If the facts of this case involved a Secretary of State not Hillary Clinton, the FBI would have issued a report concluding that there were a range of crimes that could be prosecuted which included felonies, and that many of these crimes did not require proof of specific intent, just recklessness. Hillary's working with Pagliano to set up the home brew server by itself is proof of intent for many of the elements of these crimes. After the FBI finished its investigation of a Secretary of State not Hillary, the DOJ could decide to prosecute or not, or could negotiate a plea. While a Secretary of State not Hillary might not get jail time, there's no way that such a person would get off Scot Free. There's no way such a person would have a security clearance ever again. Such a person would never pass a Senate confirmation hearing for appointed office. For Hillary to skate here, you have to believe that (1) the FBI will whitewash its investigative report, and (2) that Lynch would then not act and grant clemency by prosecutorial discretion. #2 is off the table now , if it ever was, thanks to Bill meeting with Lynch. While Hillary is still running to be President, I don't see how there can be a plea negotiation. So the Big Known Unknown here is the range of charges the FBI says can be brought based on the facts established by its investigation. A big fact likely to be established is that Hillary's minions with security clearances (I'm looking at you Huma and Cheryl) were copying messages and documents off the secure government server and then putting the copies onto Hillary's home brew server. There are many felonies right there, and there's proof in the public domain that Hillary was specifically aware of this. The wild card is whether the FBI investigated Clinton Cash Corruption, which is the other Big Known Unknown. So expect word to leak soon that the FBI/DOJ will be seeking felony indictments against Hillary, Huma, Cherl and Jake.
