I've always liked the music of Neil Finn.
In addition to his solo work, he was one of the main songwriters/singers for Split Enz and Crowded House.
But, I thought he'd given up his music career.
Not so.
It turns out he released another solo album in 2014, "Dizzy Heights". I saw it on amazon for $5.00 so I thought what the heck and bought it.
I actually like the album and the arrangements are modern and somewhat quirky, but
the dude truly gives fuckall about his career at this point.

And it sucks. We drove up to Dad's in May, counted 12 construction delays.
Then went up last weekend for his surprise 80th bday, the construction and traffic was surprising light, maybe most people stayed close to home for Father's Day.
And they do shut down construction for the weekends for the FIBS spending $$ in WI.

I drove thru White Sulpher Springs at 2:45pm Thursday, just as the water was beginning to rise. I've never seen anything like it. The water rose so fast, that some of the folks never had a chance.
As of this post, 16 confirmed dead in Greenbrier County West Virginia. More than all the tornado deaths nationwide so far this year. 24 total statewide.
Unfortunately, that number will grow. There are still people missing. I know this because I've been on scene for the last 48hrs.
All at the same time, I'm fuckin heartbroken, exhausted, furious and Tremendously Proud (at how we've all pulled together to take care of our own).
I pray a natural disaster never strikes your community, Horde.

I guess I'm retarted or something, but I can never figure out what's going on in these movies. Bourne wakes up in the middle of nowhere and somehow realizes he has to run, hot-wires a stolen phone and transfers money into a Swiss account, lies low for a week and then meets with someone who it turns out is watching him with a telescope from an office tower across the way, survives a murder attempt by hot-wiring a stolen baby buggy that he shoves in front of a motorcycle with a bomb that was rigged to go off when it hit him but instead it hits a fountain and everyone gets wet, then a phone in a phone booth starts jangling so he picks it up and someone says "Are you coming?" and -- well, by that time I'm preparing to nap.

That is pretty funny - they go about 10 mph once they get onto the Cape.
I think the shuttle would be brought into one of the landing strips at the Cape via the 747 transporter when it landed elsewhere.
Right now the Space-X puts its landing barge into Port Canaveral and has only a short (~1 mile) on public roads (or it might be able to take the back roads through NOTU).

Natural disasters bite, anyway you have 'em. Lost my boat to Hurricane Ike in '08, as well as over $50k damage to the house, here.
My house is built above the 100 yr. flood plain in Galveston, as it was known from the Great Hurricane of 1900, which killed over 10,000.
Alas, no one told Hurricane Ike what that 100 yr. mark was, so 108 years later, I ended up with a lost boat and three inches of water as an uninvited guest, in a brand new house bought just five weeks previous.
My losses were nothing in comparison to those in W.VA right now.
Bad enough 0zero has been doing his damndest to kill coal, up there. Now, they've got nature trying to kill them, directly.
But, my money is on the Redneck Nation up there to survive, to overcome and to thrive.

The author had Half Life confused with Fallout the MMO. Half Life is owned and always has been owned and developed by Gabe Newell's Valve, the company currently running Steam and which made and is still supporting Counter Strike, Team Fortress 2, CS: GO, Left for Dead; LFD 2, and DOTA.
Fallout The MMO (a side property) was held by Interplay who was sued by Bethesda for failing to develop the property within their contracted time. It is currently reverting to Bethesda who just came out with an expansion to Fallout 4. (They bought the single player rights to the franchise and developed Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, Fallout 4, and are currently developing some additional PC puzzle/sim games for the franchise).

I bought a used x box. Bought brand new Assassins Creed with the guide book. Awesome game but never finished it because the game I bough glitches up in a movie scene (in the fucking science lab that teleports the charactor back in time) before the final home stretch of the game.
This is a sore subject for me. I was stuck in some gaming he'll of a purgatory. I'm just now back onto the gaming horse and this white boy Drake from Uncharted better bring in a great payoff at the end.
Cool thing about the Creed is that you are an assassin and killing people silently along the way is much more thrilling than an all out slaughter house.

It was damnable "store credit" account with some Blair.com, selling clothes and stuff. Bill was due in mid-April and it was two months behind and in collection.
Some "Comenity" bank was making calls. Some damn bitch on the other end, who was cagey and nasty, making me very suspicious. She wouldn't tell me anything, saying it was illegal. I explained my mother wasn't mentally competent to handle anything, and she'd just have to tell me. She refused, and made some comment insinuating my mother was a deadbeat, between the lines.
So it hit me and I found the damn bill. She had no memory of buying anything, but I satisfied myself she had. I called the original company/store and took care of it through them.
Then I thought, are there any more we'd missed. Yeppers. One more, but only 1 month behind.
Now, late fees and interest, usurious, on the Comenity shit, and late fees on the other one.

In the old days, the rich mingled with the middle classes and everyone else. Back in the '70s as a kid I was amazed when Dad and his buddies explained that this ornery old cuss in worn out overalls and driving a beat up pickup was the richest man in the county, and a top contender in the whole state.
The another one was a guy who'd made a fortune in the septic tank and sewer business. One of his favorite saying was "I love the smell o' shit, that's the smell of money to me!' Most people hate to do work like that, and will pay others big money to do so. This guy was one who got paid.
There wasn't an elitist bone in their body. And even some of the more hifalutin very rich men would get down and dirty with everyone else.
Now, they're isolating themselves and turning up their noses at the little people.

California has much lovely about it. As with several other parts of the world though, with lots of natural beauty, the biggest drawback is the people.
Honestly, I think the biggest problem with such places is not that there is anything particularly different about the people, except that their self of self-worth is greatly exaggerated. Which leads to all sorts of other related problems.

Well, a bit ago we got a new smoker. Today was it's first production run -- three tri-tips and two chicken breasts with mesquite smoke. So I'm trying to sit upwind of myself smelling like sweat, smoke, and accomplishment. Tomorrow, I get to clean it all up.
I had about a pound of the smoked beef with my rub (garlic powder, finely ground rainbow pepper, pasilla and california chili powder, powdered rosemary, sage, and mustard -- all in a bit of olive oil to stick it where I put it). The smoke was about as subtle as a punch in the face, and just permeated the meat (I used three batches of chips spaced about every 30 minutes) -- the rub was definitely playing second fiddle. But it was totes delish.

19 is technically an adult, and theoretically, if you are creating the fictional character, you could certainly make the case. My mother was married at 19. I think she was as adult as many people quite a few years older than that, both now and at the time.
In reality though, you are unlikely to find too many 19 year olds, male or female, today who would really be adults. So while it might be legally possible, and I would say, very highly probably for men quite a few years beyond that to be hooking up with hot/smart 19 year olds, in reality, most of those young ladies would still be, emotionally, children.

Which leads me into a segue for the greater Horde. Ever get the feeling you're in an Economics experiment??? My undergrad's in Econ, so I'm possibly over-sensitive to the possibility, but it seems like the prices at my local Lucky's vary in a peculiar way.....that makes me suspect they're more interested in trying to measure price elasticity than actually maximizing their return on shelf-space.

IIRC, the lowest age of consent in the US is 14. Heh. I first noticed it in beer.....but it's in all sorts of odd places -- like pasta, or different types of onions in the produce section. And it's not exactly random....it's like "white onions, $1.49/lb.; yellow onions, $1.49/lb.; red onions, $1.29/lb." -- I mean, wtf??? There's no way this is due to their cost at harvest. It's like they're trying to measure how many people will switch the onion in their marinara recipe to a red onion if there's a $0.20 price differential.

Honestly, I don't believe that to be wholly true. It is possible to interact with young females, teenagers, and have meaningful dialogue.
Now, before anyone let's their mind "go there," what I really mean is, you, as an adult male, have the ability to treat teenage females with dignity, CONTROL the content of the discussion, and create a level of rapport that can be crucially beneficial to them.
It can be done, and I dare say, it SHOULD be done, for a healthy society to function as it was meant to. Adult males who behave with honor around young females help teach them to be mature adults themselves.
Can it be done? Sure. Is it being done? Probably not anywhere near as much as it use to, because these days, yes, the young females are being brainwashed into thinking they are supposed to engage sexually, rather than intellectually, and too many men decide that's all the green light they need.

Bolling was the "clean" candidate. Cuccinelli had taken gifts from Jonnie Williams, but Bolling had not.
Cuccinelli was also a shitty candidate, and ran a shitty campaign.
At the convention, he should have gotten the party to rally around one of the other candidates that wasn't the typical Virginia GOP gadfly candidate. That would have probably gotten a better candidate that would have helped him, and would have definitely gotten Obenshain elected as AG.
The VA GOP would have been better off having a primary instead of a convention. Virginia GOP conventions have almost always turned into clusterfucks.

There is a concept in Econ called "price discovery" -- where markets can seamlessly and efficiently work out where to allocate resources because things are 30 cents in east Bumfuckistan and can get to your door for 8 cents freight; they're available for 28 cents in west Bumfuckistan with 11 cents freight; or, you can spend 16 cents reworking something that you buy across town for 20 cents, and only pay a penny for freight.
People do this naturally and without overthinking. Every time you go, "nah, not worth it" or "that's a deal!!!", you have discovered a price and made a transactional decision based on it.
Modern totalitarianism is all based on hiding the price so people can't make an informed decision. It's why everything is BOGO or 3/$11 or "buy 2 and get a coupon for something else." The elites figure that they can continuously scam the mathematically-inept rabble by playing these games.

Well, my experience is mostly anecdotal, but I do think it's possible for me not to speculate on whether a youngster is ordinary or extraordinary, and what is crucial to me is, for ME to control the dialogue.
I don't care how brilliant the kid is, I really don't want to have to wander into whatever they find interesting.
A lot of it has to do with how you engage them. Most teenagers have had adults ask them any number of times, any number of ways how school is going, or if they have some particular interest in an activity, how THAT is going.
You can challenge them to think, ask a question in a different way, or notice something ELSE about them other than the obvious, and you never know what kind of lightbulb might go off in their heads.

All behavior, human or otherwise, operates on pretty much the same principle. Don't EVER reward unless and until the thing does what you want it do to, and if you really want to entice it to keep doing what you want it to do? Reward it intermittently.

If it's any consolation, Punahou treated all of us military brats like something they'd scraped off their shoe. At one point they weren't even going to give us diplomas from Punahou; instead, they proposed giving us "certificates of completion" of high school, because we weren't "Punahou people."
Then the National Merit results came out, and the couple dozen or so of us who'd transferred in in our senior year had doubled the number of National Merit finalists they had. Suddenly we WERE "Punahou people" after all.
So I've got no love whatever for Punahou. Trust me on this.

This is likely true - since a woman looking at a man in a situation like this indicates interest they tend to be cautious about letting a man see that they are looking at him.
At one point in my life I had a fair number of single female friends, and since I was in a long term relationship they'd ask me for dating advice.

My dad (retired Chief Petty Officer) expected more outta me, being the oldest and all.
Played basketball and softball in high school. Went into the Army outta high school, plus played tackle football for shits and giggles growing up (Win, lose, or tie, Raiders 'til I die).
Met the future ex when I was stationed at Schofield.
At least we lasted 20+ years and called it quits after our daughters grew up. He wanted to leave Texas and move to GA after I got out in 2009.
I didn't.

I was vacuuming the "lawn" because I had torn an old car apart, and spilled vast quantity of broken window glass into the grass. Vacuum seemed like the best way to deal with it, and indeed, I did get about 99% of it. What was a huge mess, now looks like the normal scruffy pasture grass.

Yeah, I have a friend, quite a few years younger than me, but definitely an adult. She's smart as a whip, quirky weird, fun and funny, and drop dead gorgeous.
She told me once, men can be so vile, most of them within minutes of meeting her are talking about their penises, and then getting their feelings hurt when she doesn't express gratitude.
We agree on most things, and then get into loud, friendly arguments when we don't. She once told me she can't imagine getting into a relationship with somebody she wasn't friends with first (she's single).

A month or so ago, we were talking about some recent success of mine, and she said we should go out and celebrate. I was non-committal, mostly because at the time I really was too damn busy, but said something like "yeah, let's have some of the gang get together soon."

He wound up being a manager at one of the state agencies. When I was having trouble with a manager when I was an adult he sat me down and listened to what my problems were, and advised me to get out because I was being set up for an administrative firing.

From an honest sociology standpoint (yes, I know.....), there is an optimal point where a large percentage of citizens carry -- some openly, some concealed. I would suspect (based completely on personal bias), that as the percentage of citizens carrying increased, the number of optimally concealed would decrease.

So, I started out with wood in it, per instructions. I preheated for a while as I prepped my meats. Being an initial run, I went with a tri-tip and a chicken breast bare naked on the top shelf; a tri-tip and a chicken breast marinaded for a bit in Scott's Sauce Co., Goldsboro, NC on the middle shelf; and a tri-tip with my own rub described earlier on the bottom.
It was going "puff-puff-puff" through the 3/4-closed smoke vent when I brought stuff out and loaded the top two shelves, then went back in to "paint" the last tri-tip. When I went out to put the last one in, it was so smoky that I opened it and couldn't see any of the contents for a bit. That's where I got smoked. After I got the last tri-tip loaded, it went back to going "puff-puff-puff".
Does anyone have an explanation as to why the smoke was so gnarly when I put the last tri-tip in?

Most smoke issues are lack of sufficient airflow in burn box or wood is too wet. Always takes some fine tuning.
Stuffed a sock in the exit one winter to keep stuff out. Zero draft until I noticed the no exhaust during spring startup. Now that is smoky. Wood stove is good training for running a smoker.

I know she's gone, but...we have an open carry group here, the purpose is simply to show the flag so to speak, to show everyone that just because we're carrying doesn't mean we aren't just normal folks doing normal things. Most of the time I carry concealed just to avoid the hassles, but when I do open carry I notice two things:
1. Most people don't notice
2. The ones that do notice are either carrying themselves or assume I'm law enforcement of some type.
