Speaking of Art, my wife has been collaborating on an Encyclopedia of the Jesuits for more than a decade, and has travelled extensively to document art and architecture significant to the subject. Her most recent trip, to Spain, included a visit to a shrine dedicated to Dominic de la Calzada, a Saint credited with several local miracles. One of the miracles involved the resurrection of a wrongfully hanged German pilgrim, and somehow that legend became the basis for a tradition of keeping a live hen and rooster in the transept of the Church. So, for the last 700 years they have been raising chickens in an ornate "coop" that is built into the building. I thought that was pretty cool.

I don't often care for the style of religious art of that period. It sometimes seems stilted, relying on the viewer's piety for acceptance instead of artistic technique. ("Hey. There's a halo. This must be good art!) In this case, the detail and color of David's clothes, his throne, and instrument against the starkly plain background is very effective. I wonder if the colors were even more brilliant when it was new.

I need a huge federal grant, because I have this plan, see.
Carbon sequestration. Now hear me out. First we develop a mechanism by which carbon is removed from the atmosphere, and bound with hydrogen for long term storage, (with a bonus...the 'exhaust' from this system will release pure, life giving O2). The carbon output, which is fairly stable when bound with hydrogen, can be simply buried away, and forgotten, since even if it does break down over time, it doesn't release anything but CO2, and water. Alternatively, we can use this bound carbon as a 100 percent carbon neutral energy source, which can be used to generate electricity, power trains, ships, and other vehicles, and can even be put to use cooking delicious ribs on weekends. I'm calling this the Gaia Respecting Alternative Sequestration System, or G.R.A.S.S. So, question is, Grant request to the feds, or kickstarter first? So in the previous thread it was observed that the German Bundeswehr has one company of Leopard tanks and one company of mechanized infantry forward-deployed in Poland.
Not to be outdone, Prince Chooming has ordered similarly scanty American armored forces into Poland. Part of his "security guarantee" to the Poles. Well, it has now been learned that during the fighting in Ukraine, there was an opportunity for Putin's forces to try out the new generation of Russian rocket artillery systems against Ukrainian formations. Result? Two Ukrainian mechanized battalions wiped out. In three minutes. http://tinyurl.com/horgxfx Another Task Force Smith moment is on the horizon. It'll be ugly when it comes. Don't feel too bad AlextheChick about not knowing the symbolism behind much of religious art and architecture for that matter.
The new St. Thomas Catholic Church in Long Beach, MS that replaced the one Katrina destroyed is an aesthetic and religious mess. Three statues survived from the old church, so in the new church they are inside their own little temples with columns. The architect put a wall of recovered wood from the old church that is so placed it seems to come between the priest/congregation and the depiction of Christ in the stained glass window above. And the four stained glass windows that survived are misaligned one could say with the new statuary that could emphasize what is being depicted in the windows. The Stations of the Cross are along the outer wall but it is easy to miss one they are so haphazardly arranged. And way up, about 20ft high, are these tiny stained glass windows with saints depicted; but they are so high and so small it is hard to see who is who. Externally this Church is built in the Spanish Mission Motif while inside is this humongous open space with all these exposed but dark stained wooden roof beams forty feet up. As I said, the church is an architectural mess. Posted by: Anna Puma at June 28, 2016 10:18 AM (C6duO) Posted by: Kent Brockman at June 28, 2016 10:18 AM (+m6Jw) 125

I actually find it breathtaking that they don't come out and explicitly call Obama, Hillary and the entire administration team - corrupt and evil. These people purposely allowed the people in Benghazi to die, then the lied about it and now, for them, life goes on as if nothing has happened. And worse, they have profited from contributions and money donated in order to continue to obscure the truth of what they did in order to advance their political careers. Saw a Chihuly exhibit at the Bronx botanical gardens.
They had a video showing how he made glass work and paintings. The paintings were done with ketchup squeeze bottles filled with paint. It took him about a minute to do a painting. Later I was in the bookstore. They had a similar 11x14" painting for $2500 ($2800 framed). A middle aged couple was standing there stroking their chins. Next time I saw them they were in the checkout line buying the painting. I figure $2500 for a minutes work is $150,000 an hour --good work if you can get it. There is NOTHING Gowdy can do as far as prosecuting her. If she were still SOS, he could demand she resign or the House could defund the state department(THAT IS NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN). This is why who is in charge of the executive branch matters. The SOS works for that branch. Obama is as involved in this indecision as Hillary because he was running guns, etc. to his Muslim brotherhood friends in Syria though Libya and didn't want congress or the public to know. Chris Stevens and the others were expendable. As Hillary put it, "What difference does it make?" What was important to them was that no one found out about the gun running and therefore the cover up began when everything went to hell. Good bye EU say hello to Superstate. Why is it any surprise at all that the same group of people, who've told us for decades how great the Soviet system and communism were- and how awful the USA and capitalism were,- want to turn the EU into the Soviet Union...literally? Interesting times ahead for Europe- it seems clear now that the tsunami of muslim illegals into the EU was to act as the first step, one which broke each individual nation state or plunged it into cultural crisis, for the EU's plan to become the only controlling authority in a Superstate. Producers of the James Bond series- here's your next story. All you need, IMHO, is to come up with analogues for Soros, Merkel, and I suppose, anyone who shows up at Davos. Welp. Good for Britain. Sean Trende says the polls are wrong. Not sure which ones, but someone is wrong, because both these statements cannot be true:
To win the Electoral College, Trump simply needs to flip Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania. The state polling shows Clinton's leads in those states to be 3.4 points, 2.7 points, and 0.5 points, respectively. This isn't consistent with a 12-point Clinton lead, or even the six-point lead that the national average shows. Posted by: MTF at June 28, 2016 11:08 AM (/m8T6) 280

I actually think this is a pretty smart strategy. If Gowdy had come out and said Hillary was responsible then the msm would have just dismissed it as a partisan hit job. By not taking that bait and saying that people should read the report and make their own decision, and that is what they are saying over and over, they are telling people to go around the msm and read the facts for themselves.
If people are waiting for the msm to give Republicans the same treatment they give Democrats don't hold your breath. Have to go around them. Posted by: JackStraw at June 28, 2016 11:21 AM (/tuJf) 337
For me, with respect to Hillary (and for that matter, Obama) it isn't even that they lied about Benghazi. This all goes back to Nixon. When he didn't arrest Jane Fonda for treason when she returned from manning an Anti Aircraft gun for the North Vietnamese - the left learned that it can do anything without paying a price.

302 Why has the Benghazi focus all this time been on Hilary? She was Secretary of State. obamam was the f'ing Commander in Chief when we were attacked & he went off to Vegas. Hilary has been a decoy to shift blame from TFG & we all took the bait.
Posted by: josephistan at June 28, 2016 11:13 AM (7HtZB) The focus on Hils was because she was secstate, and this was a consulate. Specifically, a consulate that had asked for more security from SecState, and was denied by SecState. Obama is CiC, and ultimately the buck should stop with him, but because this was part of Hils' responsibility, she should have taken a more forceful lead in providing for the security of HER employees. Also, it speaks to her ability to be president. If she can't handle a "small" regional crisis like this, how can she handle the big stuff? Which is also why the MFM is closing ranks and blaming Trump or the republicans for this. Anything to deflect from their chosen candidate. Posted by: Moki at June 28, 2016 11:29 AM (ezHMO) 368

Steve Kerr (head coach of the Golden State Warriors) wants more gun control. You would think he wouldn't fall for this stupidity considering his father's death at the hands of Islamists. I'm glad now his team lost.

Ok, and then?
Posted by: BurtTC at June 28, 2016 11:51 AM (TOk1P) I know you are actually asking a very serious and fundamental question, and I wish I had a decent responsible answer. Between the corrupt media, the graft sucking politicians, the lazy legislators, the hordes of unassimilable imported rent a voters, a growing crop of residents entitled to vote that don't want responsibility, a politicized IRS and DoJ, and the lure of EBT+EITC+FS to welfare sponges, I don't see a benign way out of this. Posted by: Hrothgar at June 28, 2016 12:00 PM (wYnyS) Neither do I. Which is why I am having to mentally prepare myself for the fight to come. One thing I am literally having to do is ask myself: What am I prepared to sacrifice, if I have to? There are many things I would like to protect, so this is something of an inventory. What can I lose, what will I give up, if it comes to that? One of those things I am struggling with is whether and when to START the fight, rather than react to events. Steve was a neighbor of mine in Tucson. He was a really nice guy. Apparently, though, he's an idiot. Posted by: garrett at June 28, 2016 12:08 PM (9JISm) 456

Word is that Benghazi was cover for a Black ops operation to buy Libyan arms that got funneled to the rebels in Syria who became ISIS. This has been reported on in British papers but ignored by US MSM.
If this isn't true, then what were doing in Benghazi in the first place. It wasn't our main embassy, and others like the Brits had gotten out of Dodge because of security concerns. So we were doing something there. What? Posted by: Ignoramus at June 28, 2016 12:12 PM (r1fLd) 462

Grammie Winger, I wanted to respond to a comment you made in the news dump thread.
Your description of the Christian faith was very well done. In response to something you alluded to I am also troubled* about something you alluded to. I suspect the day is coming when Chinese Christians will be praying for the persecuted church in the West. *Actually I'm not troubled because I've been told to not let my heart be troubled. She asked if anyone else saw it, and I said no, I didn't, because I was pretty sure I had all the information they were willing to release already, and so there was nothing a fictional drama was going to reveal. I had to explain to this person, who SAW the freakin' movie, that no, Benghazi was NOT the embassy. Posted by: BurtTC at June 28, 2016 12:15 PM (TOk1P) 467
