Thread below the Gardening Thread: Summer [KT]

Serving your later Saturday morning open thread needs

Strawberry Moon

The full moon over our shed (no, it's not a cow shed) last Monday was gorgeous. I'm kind of sorry I didn't remember that it was the night of the summer solstice. Not so sorry I missed the revelers at Stonehenge or the religious celebration parade in Santa Barbara. There are still some . . . elbows in the video at the link above for the Morons, though. In spite of some draconian restrictions on art in this celebration.

Because of an outlandish ensemble many years ago which featured a sexual bondage theme, guidelines and regulations for all floats and participants in the Solstice Parade since have been strictly enforced. There can be no words, no symbols, no nudity, floats must be people-powered, and "cannot represent physical harm to any human being. The representation of blood (fake or otherwise), dominance/violence, and or sadmasochistic behavior is not appropriate ... no whips, guns, knives, or weapons of any kind, or props intended to represent weapons of any kind are allowed."

The coincidence of the full moon with the summer solstice this year prompted a piece on statistics in the Chicago Tribune to explain why extremely rare events happen so often.

I think this piece sort of goes along with a couple of Maetenloch's ONT links the night of the solstice about (1) the replacement of a university math requirement with diversity training and (2) a persistent, widespread Myth about Spinach, caused by a single math mistake.

Seems like there have been a lot of stories about unsettled science lately. Those stories just unsettle people. Maybe it's better for us to make math and science about feelings in our universities.

Home Improvement Question

I loved Y-not's weather graphic this morning, after that amazing, alarming video. Our forecast for Monday is 109 degrees. That's almost as hot as the forecast for Phoenix.

We have low-e windows, but their ability to limit heat gain is not enough for me on days like that. What is your favorite way to limit heat entering the house through windows? Suggestions accepted for either cheap and easy fixes or more lasting solutions.

9 CBD around? I have a cooking related question.

I need to get a new frying pan - I turned on the wrong burner a week or two ago while making tea and melted my spatula all over my good pan (i.e., the one that eggs to stick to when I try to fry them...) I need to get a new one, preferably something with a lid (I can't seem to get meat hot enough internally without burning the outside without a lid - chemjeff isn't the only one who burns steaks!).

What is a good but not hugely expensive brand? I don't need fancy, but if I am not just going to buy the least expensive one at Wal-Mart I want something that will last and be worth spending the money on. I am hoping for something in the 30 dollar range or a little less.

10 Keep the blinds/drapes closed.

Last year I replaced the skylight in my bathroom and it has made an amazing difference. Before it was miserable being in the bathroom once the sun came up in the summer. It was like standing under a magnifying glass in the sun. Now it's just fine - no more sweating while I'm doing my makeup or fixing my hair. The old skylight was slightly concave, which was terrible, and I think the argon gas must have leaked out. Replacing the skylight has helped keep the upstairs cooler.

Heh. That was back in the mid-90s, a yuuuuuge local controversy that was both outlandish and unintentionally hilarious. The one thing is was NOT, was sexy. I was in the crowd watching the parade that year.

The offending float was the brainchild of a certain arty middle-aged couple in SB (she was about 6' tall, amazonian and kind of plain, he was wiry, bald with a nose-bar and gauged ears). The bondage thing on the float didn't offend the SB loonies as much as the fact that she was walking down the street wearing nothing but a pair of thong panties and head-to-toe body paint.

What's unsaid in that wiki article is that about 2 years later, they got busted for running a long-time brothel in SB. Turns out the float was actually an advertisement.

Stainless steel: I'm a big fan of Cuisinart Tri-Ply cookware. It works with induction stoves and distributes heat very well. For a the skillet cover, I use an old 10" cover that came with a long-departed Visionware dutch oven. Fits like a glove. Cleaning is a snap if soak it for 10 minutes. On sale it might be a little over your $30 budget, but it will last forever.

No, what this shows is a TOTAL breakdown of the Senior Enlisted Ranks of the US Navy power.

We expect Junior Officers to do stupid shit... but the Chief is there to make sure they don't do anything TOO stupid...

But the Senior Enlisteds moral authority has been diminished over the years... they are no longer crusty Sailors who the JOs will listen to...

And what most don't understand, is its the Sgt.s and Chief Petty Officers, who make any real military function...

The NCO ranks have been horribly screwed up in all of the services thanks to meddling by the identity-politics zampolits, and by the "zero defect" mentality in the officer corps, which has diminished NCO autonomy.

You don't fry eggs in the same pan as you do other stuff..

I buy cheap no-stick pans and throw them out when the coating goes.

If you like steaks well-done - well that's your first problem! But anyway, if you like steaks well-done, simply brown them in a pan (cast iron will do fine - great in fact!) then stick the whole pan in the oven to finish them off. This method is used in restaurants all over the country to get steaks to whatever doneness you wish.

The Ikea teflon pans with heavy bottoms are pretty decent, for around $20.

But you really can't go wrong with cast iron. I used to think that they'd cause sticking too, but once they're properly seasoned they're almost as nonstick as teflon. Unlike teflon, which wears out after awhile, when you reseason a cast iron pan, the nonstick properties are like new again.

We have room darkening cellular shades in all our bedrooms. We ordered ours through Costco; they tell you how to take the measurements, etc. We went with the cordless ones which are a little more expensive, but worth it.

I keep them down during the day on the windows where the sun shines through. It helps a great deal.

Bonus: they block out all light at night so we all sleep like babies. (Which is the original reason we bought them.)

Well worth the investment.

How long in the oven and at what temp?

Posted by: All Hail Eris

Hmm, You know if you can get your stove top up to super high, you probably don't have to put it in the oven. If not, go fire up the grill.

Flank is best medium rare; After it gets to medium, it gets tough.

Pat the flank dry with paper. Need a dry surface.

I would rather use a cast-iron skillet or some other pan than the dutch, but if that's what you have: heat it up on the stove, then add your veggie oil. Get it to the smoke point and then add your flank.

Don't move or turn it for at least 3 min. if you can get it hot enough to start charring in that 3 min, you have an awesome stove.

Turning it's going to be a bear in the dutch. You need to get a thin metal spatula under the searing meat to turn it. Chances are you're going to lose the crispy sear.

Flip and sear it for another 2 or 3 min then into the hot oven. Probably no more than 3 min @ 325'

Press the flank; it should still be bouncy. Stick it with your meat thermo; you're shooting for 125' for an 1" thick flank. Let rest for 5 min before slicing. Slice against the grain.

Again, this is for a med-rare flank. IF you need more doneness, shoot for 135' but chefs e'rrywhere will cry.

92 Since I seem to be here all alone, I'll throw my two cents in to Grey Fox as well.

I agree with the nonstick pan for eggs - get something inexpensive, treat it gently, and toss it when the nonstick coating starts to go.

Cast iron pans are good, but can be heavy if you get into the bigger sizes. I do like stainless steel the best; I'm wary of aluminum because of the possible link to Alzheimer's (maybe not for anodized? I don't know, but I'm paranoid about these things.)

Check places like Marshall's and TJ Maxx - I've gotten some nice ones there at a great price, especially if you look on the clearance aisles. It will be an investment, but you will have them the rest of your life, and then your heirs will have it the rest of theirs!

"Phil Houston is CEO of QVerity, a training and consulting company specializing in detecting deception by employing a model he developed while at the Central Intelligence Agency. When U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch made her appearance this week on Fox News Sunday, she was asked about the government's decision to put Orlando nightclub killer Omar Mateen on a terrorist watch list in 2013, only to remove him from the list the following year. The deceptive behavior exhibited in her response has led us to conclude that despite her assurances to the contrary, Lynch sees this matter as one that needs to be held as close to the vest as possible."

Anna Puma if you're still here, you're of course right about the appalling losses early in WWII against Japan. Two factors to keep in mind, though.

One, the Jap surface forces were damn good, highly trained (esp. in night warfare), and had the Long Lance torpedo which they knew how to use.

Two, there often are simply lag times and learn-the-hard-way phases of large conflicts or operations of any sort. It wasn't just our surface Navy that got off to a very poor start in WWII. We basically didn't know what we were doing in all major phases of operations.

Just finishing "Silent Victory" about the Pacific sub campaign, gaining new understanding of how outdated doctrine, unaggressive skippers, and bad torpedoes limited the subs' impact for nearly 2 years. Once the pieces fell into place - yowzah, Japan was doomed by the sub campaign alone.

It's a f***ing weed. It grew, in my yute, fabulously and effortlessly in the same yard where I am now having trouble getting it to thrive in pots. I have pots with home-made compost, some just with good commercial potting soil, some with a mix.

Meh. Scraggly, grows enough to use about every 3 or 4 weeks. WTF? It's really frustrating. To add to my astonishment/frustration with getting new citrus to prosper. When I was a kid, the whole area (and this yard) had people sticking citrus in the ground with no idea what they were doing. I'm sure many had the wrong soil, wrong basins, were over-watered for sure. Yet ...... they all grew without any problem.

I'm on my third lime tree in a perfect spot with prep and care right out of the UC Davis guide book (literally). They f***ing sit there, grow a bit, then yellow/drop their leaves, stay scraggly, blah blah blah. Also have a dwarf Yuzu that has retreated after 4 years, given up some branches. WTF?? "Chloe Grace Moretz wants Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton to ditch expensive college fees.

The Carrie actress reveals she often raises issues she thinks are of concern to young women with the politician.

It's not the first time Chloe Grace has shown her political leanings, the outspoken 19-year-old has previously spoken of her support of Clinton's bid for the White House over fellow Democrat Bernie Sanders, and admitted she thinks Republican Trump has no chance of succeeding President Barack Obama as U.S. leader.

"My biggest issue as a young person, male or female, is our educational system. When I turned 18, I decided that I couldn't justify the expense of college," she tells Elle.com.

At just 17, Chloe Grace was earning a reported $500,000 a movie. But says she chose to skip college at 18, because of the huge cost of college education. A top-tier U.S. university education can cost $60,000 a year, and a public college will cost half that, according to student support organisation College Board.

"I can't justify spending my own money and throwing it away to go to college just to pay it back for 15 years," she says.

"It feels really inappropriate, like I'm getting robbed.
So I told that to Hillary Clinton. I said, "Why can't we make it so when kids turn 18, they want to go to college? It should be free."

The speed with which American forces learned and became in most cases superior was amazing. Ditto of course for the industrial mobilization and the technological advances that armed them.

One of my favorite examples of how "American" the whole effort was - the selection of personnel for the key job of director of combat air patrols over our large carrier task forces. The US developed a whole layered system of air defense for our task forces, using radar and rings of different sorts of ships with different sorts of anti-aircraft weaponry.

But at the center of it was the control of the fighter planes aloft, who were the most effective weapon at stopping attacking Japanese formations. So who was selected for the high-pressure job of controlling these assets, from the combat control centers of the carriers at the center of the formation? Experienced Wall Street traders - people accustomed to making lots of very high-stakes decisions, quickly.

Oh rhomboid, that's so frustrating! Trying to grow citrus (aside from the fact that I'm in the wrong zone) would be so far above my ability that I can't even fathom it.

But, since I like you, I'll let you in on my secret for my success with mint. Step one: go to Home Depot and buy one, small mint plant (because you are cheap, and you also think this isn't going to work anyway).

Step two: Repot the small mint plant, after neglecting it for a week or so, into a slightly larger pot that you have lying around. Use commercial potting soil. Put it on your deck, which is partly sunny, because with all the trees you have in your yard this is your best shot.

Step three: watch it sadly as it flounders around for the summer. Pick a leaf or two in a half-hearted way to use for iced tea, thinking that at least you'll have something to show for your (non) effort.

Step four: leave it sitting in the pot, totally neglected, on your deck all winter.

Step five: look at the pot in the late spring, wonder briefly what was in there last year, then find the plastic marker that says "peppermint." Say "oh, right" bitterly to yourself. Go back in the house and ignore it some more.

And then, a few weeks later, after the monsoons have stopped and the sun finally shows up, you will have a big, fluffy mint plant! Guaranteed to work!

126 A'stan of course is a different thing entirely. The first and most important stage (removing the situation/regime that provided a safe haven for enemies of the US that were capable of inflicting harm) took a few months. A much more aggressive and risk-taking approach should have been used, instead of the slow, ally-dependent one, but that's another issue.

A'stan was and remains an impossible challenge, but one one you can't simply ignore (cuz 9/11). It's unique. And of course completely different than confronting organized sovereign state peers, like Germany and Japan.

It's hopeless trying to get people to actually think about things, they prefer facile slogans and bad analogies, but if you look at the actual history, consolidating and exploiting our WWII victories (esp. in Europe) involved decades of effort, gigantic expenditures of $$$ and will, covert ops, intervention in internal politics and even armed conflicts, harrowing confrontations with the Soviets, and more.

The efforts in Iraq and A'stan, including blood, treasure, political will, etc., wouldn't even show up on a rationally plotted scale next to what we did in Europe from '43 to the 90s. Of course the European effort was not simply wasted, thrown away, as Iraq has been and A'stan almost certainly will be. But America was a serious country in the post-war period, not so much now.

My car starting running a bit hot so I checked the coolant reservoir and it was very very low. I filled it. Is that good enough? Was I suppose to top off the radiator, too? TIA

143 Ruh Roh..... seems the the 'Official' leaders of the Brexit Leave campaign,.... the ones who will be negotiating with the EU, do not think that immigration is even on the table.

Saying the Free migration of Labor will continue...

As we used to say in the Navy.... 'stand by for heavy rolls as the ship comes about'....

Eh. It's the Remainiacs trying to sow dissent. No one said all immigration would stop just that they wanted control over it.

If there is an easy access to fill the radiator yes fill it. some newer cars don't have a cap so unless you want to pull a hose not necessarily worth the effort.

The new system pulls new fluid from the reservoir when it cools. So keep checking the reservoir for now and the system should balance on it's own. If it still is getting hot above normal more investigation is required.

There should be a couple of lines on the reservoir; fill it about 1/2 to 2/3rds of the way to the top. Check it in a couple of days, and if it's low, top up. The radiator will draw from it if it's low.

Try to fill it w/appropriate coolant for your vehicle, rather than just H2O. You can buy premixed 50:50 if you don't want to mix your own. GMs use an orange-colored coolant, whereas most use the typical yellow-green. Green and orange mixed together make "mud", according to my radiator guy.

Don't spill radiator fluid, and if you do, clean it up well. It's toxic to animals, particularly dogs.

148 Thanks. I didnt even see a radiator cap and didnt see one in my manual and havent found my model or year on line to see a photo of where it might be. I did spill a little on the reservoir but it did not spill on the ground. I'll check later and wipe it off the reservoir. As far as poison - I've read too many cases where people used antifreeze to kill people. At one time, it was difficult to detect in a body so people were getting away with murder.

Posted by: Bruce With a Wang! at June 25, 2016 04:11 PM (iQIUe)

149 If it's not a puddle don't worry about spilled antifreeze. There wouldn't be any farm dogs if drippings were deadly. Hell the mascot strays that used to hang around the auto shop I worked at where tubs of drained antifreeze were left uncovered never killed one. Yes it is sweet tasting and has killed dogs but rare. It's good info to know but sometimes overblown.

157 At just 17, Chloe Grace was earning a reported $500,000 a movie.

See WZ.

160 Wow. Against habit I followed a link on TrudgeReport, one regarding the Idaho juvenile assault/"refugee" case.

The US attorney for Idaho's statement is breath-taking. Having not followed every press release by every US attorney's office for 20 years, I really shouldn't assert it's completely out of line or unheard of - but it absolutely should be.

Some vile passive-aggressive language about people needing to shut up, not deal in rumors, etc.

WTFFFFF is a US attorney's office - or any govt. office at any level in the US - doing making a statement like this? Although I doubt the official in charge could find Germany on a map, she certainly seems fond of the soft authoritarianism of much of western Europe.

Oddly, here statement did not cite the example of a local criminal case in Florida that was inflamed to the point an abusively weak and indefensible prosecution took place. Inflamed by the "senior law enforcement official" in the country, in a crude and vile manner (w/ honorable mention to the state governor, for pushing an abusive prosecution even though the sane heads on the scene quickly decided there was no case).

Willy J, your advice re antifreeze is unwise at best, and evil at worst. If you want to poison your own dogs, have at it but know you'll be judged someday, quite possibly before you hit the pearly gates.
A close friend of mine had left his two dogs in their outdoor fenced-in area, with access to part of his garage thru a hatch in the wall. One of the dogs, a pointer-American Bulldog mix (looked like an English Pointer on steroids), managed to knock a jug of anti-freeze off a high shelf nearby. It landed on its plastic cap, which split in half and allowed the antifreeze to pour out on the floor and under the barrier, into the dogs' area. My pal came home not long thereafter and found Huck withtongue out and eyes bulging, going into convulsions, and his other dog cowering in the corner. My pal, a fireman/EMT and a cool head in a hot spot, called his vet for advice but realized, between the half-hour into town and the dog's worsening condition, that the dog wouldn't make it and instead chose to end the dog's misery himself. Using the only gun he had onsite, one round from his .44 cured Huck's problem permanently, and left my friend a crying mess on his backhoe as he dug thru frozen ground to bury his dog.
I would strongly advise against a cavalier attitude toward antifreeze if there is any chance of an animal's exposure to it. YMMV.

Look for Calphalon hard-anodized aluminum pots and pans at your favorite thrift shop, craigslist, or eBay. The original stuff will show "Commercial Aluminum Cookware, Toledo OH" on the bottom, but the newer stuff is good too. No coating to scrape off, metal utensils are OK, the hard-anodizing prevents reaction with acidic foods (tomatoes, lemon juice, etc.), and if you remember "hot pan, cool oil" you won't have a problem with sticking. Calphalon was a hot item for wedding gifts for quite a while but it's not for everyone, as it's heavy and will stick if one cooks carelessly, so there's plenty of it on the secondary market.
