Overnight Open Thread (6-22-2016) - Behold teh Stoopid Edition

Quote of the Day

"It's getting harder for business people like me to be successful, but if they [the victims] follow the rules it would be very hard for me to be successful. That's one of the surprises. My friends and I thought we would not be successful for so long, especially with how Craigslist is different now. But there is always someone looking to sell something who doesn't know the game."

Also Oops: Loretta Lynch: We Have No Idea Where Omar Mateen's Wife Is

Now this is how you do rhetoric. Churchill would approve.

Why Terrorists Target Gun-Free Zones

Because they're terrorists - not idiots.

Just a couple of months ago, a young ISIS sympathizer planned a shooting at one of the largest churches in Detroit. An FBI wire recorded him explaining why he had picked the church as a target: "It's easy, and a lot of people go there. Plus people are not allowed to carry guns in church. Plus it would make the news."

Why The Democrats Are Pushing Gun Control Even Though They Know It's Pointless and Likely a Political Loser

Damage control. Also squirrel!

The possibility that terrorist attacks might shift the electoral terrain in Donald Trump's favor has been one of Democrats' biggest worries since he emerged as the presumptive nominee.

...More broadly, both experimental and real-world studies have tended to show that in the US and abroad, the major party with a more hawkish reputation usually benefits when international terror becomes a major concern.

...In that context, focusing the political argument on gun regulation rather than Omar Mateen's admiration for ISIS or questions around Muslim immigration to the United States is a strategic win. Democrats may not win many votes with thin gruel, poll-tested gun control proposals, but they aren't going to lose any.

The Pentagon Doesn't Want to Talk About US Soldiers Injured or Killed in Iraq or Syria Anymore

None of your business, citizen. Your weight and blood pressure however are state business. This reeks of the Obama regime.

How Important Are Book Superstores Anyway?

Then:

Book superstores such as Barnes & Noble cause risk-averse publishers to double down on celebrity authors and surefire hits.

Now:

In a world without Barnes & Noble, risk-averse publishers will double down on celebrity authors and surefire hits.

Prediction: Risk-averse publishers will double down on celebrity authors and surefire hits.

They Killed Juma the Jaguar!!!!

Shooting the official mascot of the 2016 Rio Olympics is just ominous sign #63 for those counting. Meanwhile there are reports that the Olympic Committee is quietly scouting previous Olympic sites as an alternate location in case Rio completely implodes. But then this is largely their own damn fault:

The Olympic Committee seems to be very interested in "diversity" these days and is pushing the idea of holding the games in a variety of places which are more than a little dodgy in terms of their humanitarian record or simply unable to pull of something of this magnitude. That wins them plenty of plaudits from human rights workers around the globe, but it doesn't do much for the reputation of the games themselves if people are refusing to attend, dropping dead from disease or showing up to stadiums with no seats or lights in them.

Two weeks ago, I'm working on the computer during the sermon...audio guy taps me on the shoulder. "Back right against the wall. Guy is acting super sketchy. Keeps checking the stairwell and the door."

We're both steadily eyeballing him. Two different deacons went and spoke with him within two minutes. Turns out the guy is just a little touched, no threat, but at least 4 people were almost instantly aware that something was up.

I've always been wary and paying attention in the back. After
Charleston and with Islamic violence showing up here in the US, all of
us are paying more attention.

Two weeks ago, I'm working on the computer during the sermon...audio
guy taps me on the shoulder. "Back right against the wall. Guy is
acting super sketchy. Keeps checking the stairwell and the door."

We're both steadily eyeballing him. Two different deacons went and
spoke with him within two minutes. Turns out the guy is just a little
touched, no threat, but at least 4 people were almost instantly aware
that something was up.

I like the bit in the sidebar about MLK being both a gun owner AND on an FBI list.

Back in the 50s and forward, the FBI also had Ray Bradbury (and sci-fi writers in general) on their watch lists:

After
noting that science fiction "may be lucrative field for the
introduction of Communist ideology," Berkeley goes on to declare the
entire field of science fiction writers as a veritable fifth column,
intent on crippling America before her enemies

http://tinyurl.com/pj4jnf8

I guess on the brighter side, at least back then they were concerned with infiltrated Commies; now they run for office.

Now that you mention it...

Am surprised how many CD albums appear to have never been remastered since they were originally released in the format, roughly between 1985 and 1994.

I haven't been going nuts, but whenever I can find an album I want in a *reasonably-priced* Japanese CD pressing, I've been going with those. (I.e. if it's $8 for the American and $16 for the Japanese, I go for it, but if it's $12 for the American and $60 for the Japanese, I go with the American.)

Anybody else here know something about this? Was reading elsewhere today, the general consensus is that Japanese CDs are better mastered/manufactured, and that they still do quality control whereas American CD pressers don't.

I also think there are prices too high to pay to save the United
States. Conscription is one of them. Conscription is slavery, and I
don't think that any people or nation has a right to save itself at the
price of slavery for anyone, no matter what name it is called. We have
had the draft for twenty years now; I think this is shameful. If a
country can't save itself through the volunteer service of its own free
people, then I say: Let the damned thing go down the drain!

249 194 you and your albums!

Posted by: qdpsteve at June 23, 2016 12:35 AM (q7T0y)

All done the same. Sony guts.

One thing that happened in the late 70's and well into the 80's that the record companies didn't always save THE Master master recording leaving them with some less than impressive sounding masters. What may have happened is that the Japanese saved their original masters that they produced the original vinyl albums from.

Also, a lot of the artists sold the rights to those recordings and no longer receive royalties, but if they rerecord the album, they get the royalties from the new recording. It may also work that way with the Japanese recordings.

In another life, I did accident reconstruction/failure analysis. Generally our clients were insurance companies or lawyers, usually a combination.

In one case, this guy had a contract with a school system to keep their fire extinguishers charged. Some of them were simple pressurized water extinguishers.

The fellow used a bottle of dry nitrogen for that purpose. The problem was that the charging cylinder had no regulator, and he charged the bottles by bumping the Schrader valve with a tire chuck attached to the cylinder with a hose. The cylinder, when full, ran around 2000 psi.

Well, okay, except that the tire chuck had been dropped on concrete floors so often that it was beaten and dented. One day he shoved the chuck on a valve and couldn't get it off. The SS extinguisher explosively opened up like a blooming flower with big razor blade petals.

In the words of my colleague while giving testimony, "It was at that moment that he suffered his greatest injury". He always used that phrase when discussing a fatality.

2000 psi (which is typical for gas cylinders like that, O2, etc, etc) is way over the working pressure of the compressed air equipment. I mean way over. It boggle my mind to think of a tire chuck with 2000psi behind it.

IIRC, the crap I use has a max working pressure of about 350psi or something like that. Burst pressure will usually be 4x or so working pressure. So, you'd figure 1000psi was getting into the danger zone.

Now, there's margin built in, the burst pressure is just what it is certified for, guaranteed not to burst against (when in working order).

So, stupid to begin with.

I have two of those puppies, and filled and pressurized both of them today, because I was planning to use the cutting torch out on the grass, and wanted to have a means of extinguishing a fire, should one start. Reading the label on the newer of the two, it says clearly: "pressurize with air to 125 PSI, shake to dissolve pressurized air, and repressure to 125 PSI. Tested to 500 PSI." I have never bothered with the shaking part, and have had no problems emptying the extinguishers when needed.

Yep. Back in the early 90's the radio station I was working for was trying to get a bunch of the "MTV" music from the early to mid 80's, and the record companies didn't have it. Not even new albums, not cd's, and not even a reel to reel copy. They just didn't have it.

A lot of the compilation albums that came out in the mid to late 90's featuring those songs were made from virgin copies of vinyl albums that collectors had.

284 You know, I use 3/8" air hoses with the quick couplers (and note there are several styles, the ones I use are called "industrial" and some letter. The "automotive" type is another one, and there's another popular one. They do not interchage. They make a universal one, but they have to be able to handle all the shapes, and I think they get loose fairly quickly).

Anyway, that just wasn't enough for my 3/4" impact wrench when it really needed some CFM. So I rigged a 3/4" air hose using some larger couplers, 1/2" I think.

The difference between that size and the smaller ones is such that I cannot push it in under pressure! I have to depressurize the thing to connect it.

I was wondering if it was the arthritis getting in my hands making them weak as a little girl, but no one else can do it either.

And that's with my system cutting off at 125psi or so.

One of these days I'm going to spring and get me a two stage. I've been saying that for over 20 years. I've got three phase out in the shop, and I could really go wild with a compressor. I almost did, used one at a real shop a few years ago, but didn't drop the dough.

Craigslist is weird. The owner has this thing about "dealing local", and makes it hard to do a global search on his site. Well, impossible, unless you use a third-party service, which he hates. But for collectors, or people simply searching for a hard-to-find item, a global search makes eminent sense.

I bought a Diesel Suburban off a Craigslist seller in Portland, Oregon. Contacted a friend in the Portland area, got a recommend for a GM mechanic, hired that guy to check out the vehicle. Based on his OK, I sent the seller a thousand dollars as down payment, and went there a week later with the balance of cash, and did the deal in a bar on the Columbia River waterfront. Everybody was happy, and that truck lasted me 10 years.

310 I have it all back together, but don't know how to get it to spring back & pull the cord in. I assume I have to pre-wind the gear before final assembly. Maybe take the T handle off, pre-wind, then tie the handle back on?

Posted by: Chi at June 23, 2016 01:35 AM (yLZki)

Actually, the grass never caught fire, although much red-hot slag fell into it. Rain in the last day.

Recoil springs? It depends on what kind. Some have a notch on the inboard face of the rope pulley; so you take off the pull handle, fish the cord out of the guide, and get it in the notch. Wind up the spring with the cord in the notch. Then clamp the pulley with a pair of spring clamps (aka "skin clamps" from the aircraft industry), and fish the cord back through the guide, and reattach the handle.

Others, it's best to pull the cord all the way out, undo the knot at the pulley end, and remove cord entirely. Wind up the spring, position anchor hole in pulley in-line with cord guide, and fish the cord back in. Rather than try to "push on a string" it may be easier to run a piece of tag wire (as used on manila shipping tags) through the anchor hole in the pulley, and out the guide, then pierce it through the end of the pull cord, and drag the cord through the anchor hole, and knot it.

Recommend you use new cord. Nylon. Heat seal the ends to keep them from frizzing by using a lighter or match, then grab the melted end with a thick rag to form a point. Careful! The molten nylon loves to stick to your skin, just like Napalm. Use a small knot on the pulley end. A "figure eight" knot works great on the handle end.

323 Yep, it's just about exactly 100lbs force against a 1/4" circular area.

Drop that to 200psi, and it's about 10 lbs, 5 lbs against 100psi. So that's about how much finger pushing you have to do with those 1/4" quick couplers. Double that to 1/2", and it's 4x that, 40lbs and 20lbs.

Now add the tightness of a new coupler, and I can see why my fingers don't do so good pushing it in the big 'uns.

Simple solution? Mount a valve block in your air hose, maybe 8 feet back from the coupler. Quarter-turn ball valve to close the line to the compressor, plus a Schrader valve on downstream side to bleed off pressure on the coupler so you can change air tools easily.

335 331: I've got ball valves ahead of the couplers "tree", just don't have the new 1/2" isolated like that. So, I just shut off the ball valve, but I have to depressurize the whole "tree", with the new big coupler and the old ones, plus the air hoses connected to them. The coupler "tree" is hard piping mounted on the wall. The hoses connect there.

My set-up is sort of screwy anyway, I've got two 3HP (true motor HP rating, not the stupid inflated shit they claim) single stages running in parallel. I thought about rigging a common pressure switch system to turn them both on, but it turns out I could get them set to come on nearly the same time.

You'll never get two pressure switches to get exactly together, but it's close enough. Anything using enough flow will get them both running around the same time. Slow truck tires at 90psi or so, now that's a different story, but it doesn't matter.

One just wasn't enough CFM for some of the tools, like the air grinder and the cut-off tool. They suck air big time. And that big 3/4" impact wrench, now it's pressure drop with it's flow that was the problem.

The pressure drop on the little cut-off tools isn't a problem, they run fine to do the job.

I have an Ingersoll-Rand two-stage 5 HP compressor here, and it will run a small pressure-pot sandblaster. Has never given me trouble. I got it from a body shop owner who had it in his home shop on an acreage he was selling. It was a great deal at the time, and 12 years on, it's still giving me great service. In any case, when things were going swimmingly (up to winter 41/42), the program was a national sensation and probably reflected the broad support the war had.

But time to re-join the subs in the Pacific (Silent Victory) - it's now mid-44, the torpedoes are (mostly) working, there are lots of new boats, and the Japanese war effort is starting to feel the pinch of the attacks on the merchant fleet. Strategy is still mediocre, and only Academy grads are being given command, but the outlines of the future blow-out against Japan are clear.

346 >> Great, now I have deal with compressor envy.

Tain't nuttin. I almost got, a few years ago, a used 15HP unit. It was well worn in, with real heavy use in a real shop, but it would've been fine and lasted a long time for my use.

I think it had a 120 gal. tank. Ingersoll-Rand. Now, I've been seriously considering, before, blowing money on a 10HP or 7.5HP two-stage unit. I'm kicking myself for not going ahead and getting that 15HP used one now that I'm thinking about it.

And that taint nuttin either. When I was a young buck in college, in the summers I got a job with an electrician. That's what peels my banana, always had, and that first summer, I remember I got a taste of what some real eee-lectric shit was. Not this pansy-ass residential shit, but some real industrial electrical equipment and motors.

125HP compressors. 5000A 480V services. I remember standing in front of a 5000A service, looking at the massive, cabinet sized main breaker, feeding a switchboard and getting a raging hard-on. Yep, I almost jacked off in front of it.

And the hum, my God. Later, when I got to see some high voltage shit and actually work with it a little, I was, well, in heaven.

348 >> If so make a reduced to 1/4 quick connect to put on the 3/4 line.

Great minds think alike. That's exactly what I've done for the end of the big 3/4" hose. I put a little 3/8" whip hose, about 1', on the end of the big impact wrench with 1/4" couplers. I just made a 1/2" to 1/4" coupler adapter.

It works fine. That short a length doesn't give any trouble. So, when I need it, I get the big hose hooked up and pressurized and then can use the 1/4" end.

I really just need it for the 3/4" impact when I have to break something really big. The pressure drop just killed the max torque of the thing, making it not much better than a 1/2" impact.

Alcohol "enhanced" fuel seems to be death on primer bulbs. Yeah, the 7.3 Powerstroke was a good motor. I guess, according to my buddy at the Ford dealership in Saskatchewan, the 6.0 with the aforementioned modifications is darn good, too. he said, once that stuff was done, never a come-back. But the truck in question also has rust in the body, and it's in Bella Coola, which is not the end of the Earth, but you can see it from there.

You know, that's a good thought. I was trying last month to bust some big wheel nuts with a 3/4 air impact, and had no luck. Using a long 3/8" air hose. I'm going to buy a nice long half-inch air hose, next time it comes on sale.

That, or rig my carry-air tank to do service as an accumulator. Tote the carry-air tank to the work site; run regular 3/8" air hose from compressor to carry-air tank; run short 3/4" hose from carry-air tank to big air-impact. And that would not impede the use of the carry-air tank for its original purpose. Just some added fittings.

367 You know, I've found I can use a 1/2" impact of an air tank, and it will last long enough to break 5 or 6 nuts down, you know 13/16" standard lug nuts without running out (Unless something was really stuck or held on all the way to the end, making the thing have to hammer all the way).

That reminds me of a tire man, little wiry dude. Long dead now. We called him out for a big rear tractor tire that was flat in the field. Water ballast. Big mess.

That little guy, with a flunkie to help, came bouncing across the field in his service truck. Big gas powered compressor on the back. Air jack (well, hydraulic, but the air does the jacking).

He flew in there, jacked that thing up in no time, but pumped the water out in no time before. Then, he broke the tire down still mounted. Did it with a tire hammer. One blow and that bead moved. Dude knew what the hell he was doing.

There was no helping him, you just got out of his way, otherwise you'd hinder him. That tire was patched and operational in no time.

A neighbor had a flat on a loaded truck, inside rear dual in a busy part of town. He called that dude himself (and spent the money, which was how desperate he was).

I remember him saying, "Shit, that guy is good, and fast". Again, he flew in there and had that loaded truck jacked up, got a 1" impact running off that massive gas powered compressor and had that tire off and on the ground in no time.

He hit the bead with his hammer. One blow and it was broken down. Flipped it over, broke that bead, then popped the ring off like it was nothing. Patched it, reassembled the tire in a blur and had him going. 20 minutes total, he said.

Now, I, my father, and that neighbor and everybody else has fooled with big tractor and truck tires, wearing ourselves out just trying to break them down.

He knew how to use the tire hammer. Apply force at just the right spot, and with the right, well, finesse. When he would swing, the little dude would jump off the ground and come down with a grunt, "Huhhhhnnn!" And the bead would move like it was nothing.

He knew what the hell he doeth. It was a beautiful thing to watch. He made it look like child's play. But it wasn't. That was skill.

The arrogance of the interviewerdouche is pretty breathtaking.

Apparently it's insensitive to suggest that an election be held to replace the Labour MP who was murdered. Just plug in a new Labour MP. Never mind that when several Conservative MPs were assassinated by IRA terrorists back in the day, nobody ever suggested such a thing. Elections in fact were held.

Posted by: Skip at June 23, 2016 04:56 AM (d9qXV)

385 'Morning, L, Elle, and thank you.

No, No time left. She's a Standard Poodle, age fourteen and a half. That's ancient for a bigger purebred.

She's tired, weak, incontinent and in pain. Meds aren't working. She has no quality of life left. Does not want to be petted or fussed over. Just wants to be left alone.

Scrubbing floors and washing rugs has been a daily chore for a month now. I'm tired, too.

It would be a relief if only it didn't hurt so much.

Posted by: creeper at June 23, 2016 05:00 AM (d6ebp)

386 Creeper, it sounds like it is time to let her go, but you get left with the heartbreak and sense of loss. Do dogs ever just die in their sleep like people do when they get old? All the stories from people who have lost pets sound like most live a very difficult existence at the end of their natural lives.

So sad for you and your family who will lose this gift to your lives.

Posted by: L, Elle at June 23, 2016 05:10 AM (6IPEM)

387 Creeper, My true condolences and I understand. Fourteen and a half is VERY old for a standard. We've had to do this five times with our poodles: all from old age and organ failure and the inconvenience and pain that came with it. At that point not making a hard decision and letting them suffer is selfish. You are doing the right thing.

Yeah, it hurts but we learned to concentrate on the years of wonderful memories.

389 You're right, L, Elle. It is time. A friend put it perfectly yesterday..."Leave her some dignity".

Good Morning Morons. Today is Thursday, June 23, 2016. On this day in 1947 the Senate followed the House in overriding Harry Truman's veto of the Taft-Hartley Act. The Taft-Hartly Act was written to roll back a lot of the power of the unions that they had gained under FDR and the hero Truman did not want to see that go.

434 Golly, creeper...it's such a sad thing to have to let a good dog go. Dogs are so loyal and true. There is no easy way through that sorrow. But I do know this: as the sorrow eases, it is replaced by such real thankfulness for having known such a good creature, and for having had him/her in your life. When I think of my two excellent dogs who had to be put down over the years, it is no longer with sorrow, but with a warmness of heart and gratitude that I knew them. They still enrich my life, as I remember them. But it is darn hard at first, and you have my sympathy.

Posted by: Vic We Have No Party at June 23, 2016 05:45 AM (mpXpK)

436 Creeper, We did the same kind of thing. The last of our standards had been blind for many years and his brother had passed several months before. When he had trouble walking due to pain and weakness, we modified a strap on baby carrier. I'm big enough to carry a standard that way and he went everywhere with us. When he could no longer enjoy even that, we knew it was time. We took a similar approach with our toy poodles so they could enjoy as much as possible. But your are correct, their eyes tell us when it is time.

You have had a hard year. Give yourself a chance to grieve but don't let it consume you. Let the life in you and around you find joy where you can. Wish I had Fenelon's or Grammie's insights to offer.

446 Morning, everyone!

My sister, who is a US Park Ranger on the National Mall, had to go in to work super early yesterday to help bust up an illegal exercise club. Ha ha! Apparently this has been going on for over two years, all organized through social media and without a permit. They've never been able to pin down the ringleader (the first rule of exercise club is nobody talks about exercise club), but yesterday they gave GMA permission to film them running up the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. USPS made it clear to GMA that they could not film around the Lincoln Memorial, they did anyway and got busted and then rolled over on the leader of the exercise club, who came into Park Service offices for a very tense meeting and left crying.

Honestly, you just can't make this stuff up!

Posted by: biancaneve at June 23, 2016 06:05 AM (3fayT)

448 Tim, That's how it was for us. If something 'alarmed' them, noisy cars, thunder, etc., they would gather around Mrs. JTB. If she wasn't there to be protected, they would hide behind me. Apparently I was the world's biggest alpha poodle. And her lap was always preferable to mine.

449 Creeper, it's hard to do, but you know it's time when it's time. Made the decision to say goodbye to our 15 year old lab several months ago. She couldn't do for herself and was in pain even with monthly injections, numerous meds and supplements. Vet and I couldn't do anything to make it better any more.

You've lost so much in such a short time. Bless you.

We had a female calico cat that I had found at a rest stop between Richmond, VA and Wilmington, DE when traveling to court Mrs. Krebs. When her last day came, I slept on the floor in our sun room with her prior to the vet coming. I think she appreciated the gesture and went out happier for having spent time with the person who had found her.

Nothing says the House has to meet on Capitol Hill. Rent a large hall nearby and start doing House business with the Republicans. Once the Dems start running to that location, lock them out long enough to adjourn, and head back to Capitol Hill.

Disgusting.
