Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Eye UpdateWell, apparently I'm healing snowly, but I am healing. When they do PRK, they scrape away your epithelial layer of your lens. Then they laze your cornea. The epithelial has to yeal itself closed, and it does so like a hurricane going backwards, healing from the outside in. I think that's why my vision gets briefly sharp when I put in artificial tears -- the liquid fills in the missing part of my epithelial, and for one or two eyeblinks, I have 20/25 vision. I'm mostly closed but not completely. I had a weekend of decent vision -- not good, but okay -- and today I've gone backwards into poor vision. But I'm told that kind of fluctuation is normal, too. Still not there yet, and it's still almost impossible to read, but I'm told this is just slower-than-normal and that one of these days I'm going to have a sudden leap in clarity. One of these days. Meanwhile -- is the left creating a Climate of Hate that impelled this fellow traveller to come to Las Vegas in order to assassinate Donald Trump? Funny how only political speech the left doesn't like can be charged with creating these so-called Climates of Hate.Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

My LASIK surgery did not go flawlessly. Circa 2001.
In the LASIK I had, they were supposed to cut a flap of cornea, fold it back, ablate with the laser, and then flip the flap back into place. By creating a "hinge", rather than completely removing the front of the cornea and then trying to place it back after the laser ablation, the correction for astigmatism and things was better because the orientation of that piece was held in place better. Dunno if that makes sense. Anyway, the doctor had a hard time getting the "flap cutter" to stick to my eyeball, and he had to change a fitting. Don't know if that was the issue, but it cut all the way through. Which, not the end of the world. Thats the way original LASIK was done. But my doc got completely wigged out and then would not do my second eye, not until the first one healed. Well, it did not heal great, not for a long time. Vision was cloudy cloudy cloudy, and was not correctable--I did not have astigmatism, or spherical correction, that they could measure and correct. It was just blurry as crap. Meanwhile, I could not see. My spherical correction was over 9 diopters, which is a ton. I could not wear a contact in my not-yet-LASIK'd eye because that would change it's geometry and mess up the surgery. But if I wore my glasses (with one lens poked out) I got two images of what I was trying to see. One relatively clear (as corrected by my glasses) one blurry (from the slowly healing eye) but, and this is the fun part, the images were different sizes. This has to do with the physical size of the image on the retina after the light has been "refocused" by the lens of the glasses out in front of the eye. It was maddening. I could not read, or work on a computer. I also could not take a month off from work, as time stretched out. Eventually the doc gave me a modified contact prescription to put in my not-yet-fixed eye, and that made the overlapping images very nearly the same, and I could work most of a day with that. Second surgery went great, if you don't count the fact that the anesthetic didn't work and I very much felt the "flap" being cut in my second eye. Knowing your eye is being operated on is a pretty good motivation to hold still even as it's being sliced. But not fun. Second surgery was a great success. I never got to 20/20 in the first eye (my right) and it would get dry for the next 10 years or so. But I'm left eye dominant (but right handed, which makes shooting fun), and that eye is 20/20 or better, so win. I never think about it anymore unless someone brings up eye surgery. >> its got a centrifugal clutch......it and the motor have to work
>> together building AND engaging or neither work. Sum bitch. >> Motor won't rev because it's feeling no resistance and >> clutch is non-responsive. I don't get that. Centrifugal clutches are a series of weighted shoes retained by some combination of springs, counterweights, and linkage. Most are pretty simple. Their engagement is purely a function of engine RPM, and the engine's ability to handle the load at speed as the clutch starts to bite. Does the engine rev normally to the speed where you'd expect the vehicle to start moving? Does the clutch engage too soon? Does it engage abruptly and stall the engine? Does it just not engage? When one of them used an 8 year old Belgian child's drawings and writing (in crayon) as evidence of German brutality, I turned it off.
Aetius, I've been reading Norman Davies' Rising 44, which talks about the various German occupations of Poland prior to 1939. All accounts indicate that they were very humane, that they treated the Poles well, and actually had some beneficial infrastructure and administration created that they had the Poles take over. That was one of the reasons the Poles (and Polish Jews) were essentially obliterated in 1939 and onward-they expected the Germans to behave as they before, and were blind-sided by Hitler and the Nazi's vicious determination to get rid of them all. It is also why Jan Karski's reports of the atrocities in the concentration camps were ignored in Britain and the US-the leaders, such as FDR, Cordell Hull, and others assumed it was the false atrocity stories of WWI, and refused to believe them, until the evidence was so incontrovertible, they had to believe. I believe it's one of the major reasons it took the allies so long to deal with the concentration camps and the asylum for European Jews. Posted by: Moki at June 20, 2016 07:01 PM (ezHMO) 109
Hi Ace,
I didn't realize you had PRK - no one has that anymore. I did. The healing was torture and so now I understand what you've been going through. I explained it to someone once - the first day was like I had giant logs in my eyes. The 2nd day they were sticks. The 3rd day was more like toothpicks. The remained of the time, the pain didn't register as much, but yes, I got excellent at putting in eyedrops while walking down the street. It took 6 months before they felt normal and even now, (after 10 years) I don't rub one of my eyes due to some weird pain that happens when I do. They gave me that bull about being "unusual" as a healer too. I am still not sure I buy it. BUT - every single day I am grateful to have had this done!! Every day. Not just some days. Would I have it done again if i needed it to be done again? - no way in hell. But you will love this!! Congratulations (ps - my doc tells me that prk has proven to be the better procedure over lasik) Posted by: Terri at June 20, 2016 07:02 PM (i53qy) 110

The votes on today's gun control amendments: Grassley Amendment failed 53-47. Sen. Joe Donnelly (D-IN) joined Republicans, while Sens. Mark Kirk (R-IL) and Cory Gardner (R-CO) broke ranks to join Democrats. Murphy Amendment to expand background checks fails 56-44 vote. Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL) joined Democrats, while Sens. Joe Manchin (R-WV), Jon Tester (D-MT), and Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND) broke ranks and voted with the Republicans in opposition. Cornyn Amendment that would require law enforcement to be notified of a gun purchase from someone on a terror watch list fails 53-47. The amendment would also empower the attorney general to block that sale for up to three days pending a review. Sens. Joe Donnelly (D-IN) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) were the two Democratic yeas. Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME), Jeff Flake (R-AZ) and Mark Kirk (R-IL) were the GOP nays. Feinsteins no-fly, no-buy amendment that would bar people on terror watch lists from buying guns, despite the lack of due process of law, goes down in a 53-47 vote. Republican Sens. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) and Mark Kirk (R-IL) joined Republicans, while Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND) broke with Democrats to vote against the measure. My hesitation is just from a professor in college pointing out that first person sources, while invaluable, also tend to be the most unreliable. You are getting the sources bias unfiltered, and taking it as gospel can be tricky without corroboration. Since the show used primarily this child's writing to relate the events in Belgium (probably for impact), it seemed a bit hinky to me. That was all kabuki. Nobody really expected those amendments to pass. We've been down this path before and everyone knew who was going to vote for what in an election year. A couple Republicans in Blue or Purple states were allowed to vote for gun control but only because there were enough votes to make sure the amendments didn't pass. AB 1673 (Gipson): Redefines firearms to include items that are not firearms. AB 1674 (Santiago): Bans buying more than one firearm within a 30-day period. Not a huge Cornyn fan, but NSSF seems ok with his bill, and I was sent this by TSRA today:
"The U.S. Senate is expected to vote today on four gun-related proposals offered as amendments to the Commerce, Justice and Science Appropriations bill. NSSF urges you to call your U.S. Senators' offices to urge them to oppose old and previously defeated gun-control measures now being sponsored under a new anti-terrorism label by Sens. Feinstein, Schumer, Murphy and Booker. We are all united in wanting to stop terrorism. We must, however, oppose efforts that will do nothing to stop terrorist acts, but that will advance old and previously defeated gun-control measures under a new label while denying due process and Second Amendment rights. The best measures to protect Second Amendment and due process rights are being introduced by Sens. Cornyn and Grassley. Sen. Cornyn's bill would require a court order for the Justice Department to block gun sales to persons on the problem-plagued terrorist watch. Sen. Grassley's bill would ensure adequate funding and encourage states to submit all appropriate records to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) and not expand the system. The U.S. Capitol Switchboard is being flooded with calls from both sides of this issue. Look up your U.S. Senators' office number at www.senate.gov/senators/contact/. Then dial direct." This happened with France, Russia and other countries as well. The Government always rules at the will of the people. If they have no will then Government is strong, say like N. Korea. The liberals (Democrats by the way have always opposed the republican form of government because it's less easy to manipulate when the Representatives are citizens and patriots. They tell you in their name what they are. Democracy {pure} is the worst form of government. It's mob rule and easily led astray) have been working towards making the citizens weak and complacent. When that wasn't working fast enough they started to take action to import such an electorate. The Muslims are being brought in as a threat and counter balance to the Christians. They are now going to accept any immigrant regardless of documentation and I would guess that soon certain local governments will hire them for their Law Enforcement. Welcome to a foreign mercenary army on our shores for the first time in 250 years. Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That at June 20, 2016 08:16 PM (ECJ+C) 369

Posted by: Mister Magoo There are three theodicies: a) people are inherently evil. God as the righteous judge cannot be morably culpable for his punishments, either temporal or eternal. Also, God is sovereign over His creation. See Romans 9 b) Suffering can build character, "He chastiseth thsons, not the bastard", as Hebrews puts it. c) In the perspective of eternal fellowship with God in Heaven, the sufferings of this life will shrink to microscopic insignificance. I forget the exact passage, but it is a Pauline epistle. d) we simply are not in a position to know all the relevant facts, and it is arrogant to think we are. (Think Job). Not saying I agree, but those are the Biblical theodicies. They do not always sit well emotionally, and it would not be pastoral to drily assert them to a grieving congregant. So follow the doctor's orders (side note: the first OB/GYN I had told me he chose that as his specialty, not because he loved bringing new life into the world, as I enthusiastically guessed, but because women follow doctor's orders better than men do. I have one of those strange "jack of all trades" jobs that would be impossible to replace with one or two robots. It's not brain surgery but we are talking a whole fleet of robots. I went in to get LASIK a while back but then decided against it because of the whole flap issue. (It really freaked me out.) But I really wanted to go without glasses or contacts so I went with the PRK, prepared to deal with the week-long sand in the eye feeling. But I experienced little to no pain/ grit in the eye feeling because my eye doctor put a contact band aid over the eyeball - which is basically what the LASIK flap did.
So, no flap, natural healing, no pain, and NO MORE GLASSES! If any of you are considering this, ask if they have the contact band aid and then go with PRK. Posted by: neweyes at June 20, 2016 08:58 PM (8PARU) 443
Don't forget that changes will be made to jobs and what is offered if robots are bought to fill that position.
Much of what people do in their job could be discarded as being unnecessary and even limiting efficiency. So this obsolete old wreck is now locked down so tight that 90% of the internet doesn't work for me, at all. I feel your pain. Shingles on my retinas several years ago. 5 failed attempts to reattach the retina in the right eye. Still blind in that eye today. This was about 15 years ago. Retina also detached in left eye but that surgery was successful. Also had cataracts and lastly glaucoma surgery on the left eye about 7 or 8 years ago (the anesthesia failed and I woke up during the glaucoma surgery which was "fun" >_>. Left eye functions but I don't know for how long. I can't drive safely at night but I can still just pass the eye test for daytime driving. I still work and all that to support myself. I already got the cane to tap around with for when the day comes when I do lose sight in it. It's something that drove me to severe alcoholism for a long time. Hopefully you are able to cope better and have support.
